This is a continuation of previous posts here & here

Here is some info from the latest revision as of last week on the Pro Camera Product:

  1. Dual ASIC Components for real time 12MP Scaling to 1080p 60-30-24 4:2:2 color space with uncompressed 4:4:4 over optional attachment module.
  2. Spec shows CMOS sensor capable of windowed mode for use with large 20x video zooms.  1/3 windowed mode will yield 1080p without binning.
  3. Canon is still developing CCD tech and will introduce products in pro and semi-pro markets. CCD will still be used in many pro video and enterprise products. CMOS will be a complementary product to the pro video line.
  4. Overcrank will be limited to 60p, nothing higher with a 48p option.
  5. No global shutter for the CMOS. It will offer better performance than any competing product.
  6. Timelapse feature recorded 4:4:4 12.1MP on JPEG sequences to SD card. Programmable from one frame a minute to one hour.
  7. Programmable settings can be transferred on SD card for several cameras. Cinema, WB and K options can be set by SD also.
  8. Quicktime Wrapper format like that in the 5D Mark II.
  9. Sensitivity down to 1.5 lux with excellent noise performance. Still in testing!
  10. Dual phantom power XLR 48khz 24bit inputs. 4 XLR with optional module.
  11. Work is being done simultaneously on a portable 2/3 fixed lens version. Sensor will be smaller to accommodate a 14x zoom.
  12. 5D Mark II might get Av mode but not shutter control in video. Rumor I've heard twice now.

  • This is very interesting and promising.

BUT REGARDING TO 5D Mark II:

Canon must realize (we hope they already did) that “FULL MANUAL CONTROL” is required for professional use, and it is widely requested ALL around the world.

The 5D Mark II has its AE program manageing these 3 values. So there wouldn’t be impossible to let the user set them manually.

    – Aperture: No problems at all.

    – Shutter Speed: There might be some limitations to some specific speeds, but in such case Canon MUST allow the user to select the speed, even if it is a non-standard one (like those the camera is using sometimes right now, automatically and inaccurately displayed)

    – ISO: if the camera set it from 100 through 3200, there wouldn’t be any reason why the user can not set it manually. The camera can record at 3200 without overheating, so this can be done without a doubt.

Canon should give as much “full manual control” as possible, and also:

    – Let the user “LOCK” settings to use them in next shoots (to keep uniformity between takes)

    – Display the Aperture, Shutter and ISO values ACCURATELY, so the user can know them with certain

above points are implicit/included if full manual control is implemented.

TOO MANY PEOPLE is requesting all of this:

Canon must be careful, competition will take advantages of Canon’s mistakes… and soon.

  • Okay, we get it. You’re preaching to the choir on this one. Either come up with a new post or just stop, your cut and paste tactics are beginning to annoy.

  • No, this is suppose to be the next possible update to their high end XL H1S HD Camcorder. If this is all true, this looks to be a massive update.

  • you can write it big and in caps letters, but I fear full manual on the 5DII will never arrive. The reason: Canon wants more than 2500$ if its for professional use.

so 5dii will remain artificially limited – because they can.

  • Av-only control for 5D?!

Be careful, Canon folks, if you think you can play that joke on us, just keep that firmware update for yourself! We already know how to do that with other lenses and the 1.0.7 firmware.

Here is what I want and what I think many want about manual control and which is so damn easy for you to provide: FULL MANUAL CONTROL, meaning manual selection of

gain (iso) (in the 100-12800 range)
aperture (whatever the lens can do)
exposure time (within reasonable limits, i.e. from close to 1/30s to 1/4000s with reasonable steps).

Furthermore, a more standard speed selection scheme and notably 25fps.

In particular I want to be able to use that amazing low noise imager at, say iso1600 and 1/50s at 25fps.

Finally, a 100% preview mode for video resolution to be able to deal with aliasing. Current magnifications of 5x and 10x are too strong for that.

THAT IS THE LEAST THING. I understand that marketing policy may not allow you to give us more, like windowed readout, etc.

  • That´s not fair!
At last they should give us a reason of why they can´t do it.
They are going really dark on this subject. They are doing it just to avoid people buying nikon glass. It is clear that they are not giving the best of the hardware can do. Why can´t we have shutter and ISO control? That is a joke.

Should we buy a lot of lenses of a company that do not play fair with it´s own costumers? Shoud I invest all my money in a way that may have this type of problems?
The D90 is still not good as 5D Mark ii, but maybe Nikon is a better way to go in the future. They are giving manual controls to their costumers.
    What do you think?

  • yeah, there’s that little phrase at the top of the page “This site is not affiliated with Canon Inc” that people seem to miss…have you seen the posts claiming that “Canon reads this blog?” As if Canon was a person…good lord

  • I think you are a troll. Why should Canon offer more than it has? It’s effectively a first generation incarnation of the system! If it was a video camera, then sure – but the 5DII is a STILL camera, with some limited video functionality.

If I sell cameras why on earth would I choose to spend money significantly upgrading functionality when instead I can incorporate it in a newer model and sell another camera?

  • I don’t think Canon is scared of competition significantly overtaking them, and if it did they would just bring out a newer camera with better video capabilities. You have a great camera. It can do some stuff really well, and other stuff ok. Get used to it.

  • Bill gottit right..!! as per canon’s corporate theory, if it is for professional use (a.k.a if you make money out of it), then they want more money from you. 5dII video is for non-professional use(according to them). Just like business internet and business telephone lines. Why are they doing it ? coz, they can…and get away with it. with all these limitations, still the demand exists for this camera.

  • Perhaps they want more than $2500, but are they looking over their shoulder at the Panasonic GH1, the rumored Nikon D400 and Red Scarlet? The competition is closing in.

Personally, I think 96% of 5DM2 owners are still photographers. Canon’s not too concerned about the 4% crying out for manual control in video mode.

Come on Nikon! Give us the D400 with manual control!!!

  • It seems you are only aware of some particular comments/points of view and your own, wich is far from what is actually going on.

This is not only one, ten, or hundreds of people opinion and requests. It’s much beyond that.

It’s simple, if Canon doesn’t do it, another will, and once done, not few customers will drop their (already weak in many cases) loyalty to Canon.

The percentage of people who bought and will buy this camera mainly because the video feature is not 4% as someone say, FAR from it…

And the 5D Mk II is NOT just a “STILL” camera.

If it was, then why Canon would advertise so strongly the Full HD capability when it was released? Just read the White Paper, the 2nd page with text is dedicated to 5D MK II’s features, and in the first paragraphs you will find many mentions to the video capability, much before than any comment about other features…

You are a “still” photographer. That’s great, and perfectly respectable. But there are LOT of other customers who are not, and lot more who use it much more for video rather than stills.

Often “just still” photographers have a very WRONG perspective about today’s market and the photography trends, that will change the way DSLRs are going to be too.

  • We all be slaves to the Corporation, with their mind control techniques they forced mass sales of the 5D2 on unsuspecting people who read the reviews saying there was no manual control but bought it anyway.

  • Look any company that still calls their USA branded entry level DSLR the REBEL is doing no such thing! See you in 2012 when the invasion fleet arives.

  • He has a point though. The video capability is first generation DSLR, and the “still” part is well developed, which is I think what he was trying to say. And, Canon never said that camera would have manual control of video. You keep referencing a white paper, which didnt say manual control either. I think they will improve it…on the next generation.

  • I’ll take the Av mode firmware thanks! Can I have it before June 1st? I’m shooting a 2-camera feature and it would be swell.

  • end of the day it boils down to MONEY. Canon thinks they are offering too much for too little money. I thank RED for putting the fire under canon’s a$$

  • Oh so now its “my” huh? So much for “we.” Did your alters go into hiding?

  • LOL with what? What camera does RED make that is going to compete with which Canon, specifically? And I’m sure Panasonic and their $1400 GH1 WITH lens is shaking in their boots over RED too! HAHAHAHA

  • Lol..canon would’ve reserved their HD offerings in 2/3″ for 2015, but now they have to come up with “something” around $2999 to compete with red scarlet fixed lens offering. As usual, vincent Laforet would do an “independent” review of the world’s first and best…hahaha. canon has the best marketing.

  • Why don’t u all just shut the fuk up about the video
Limitations of the 5d2 and get a real video camera?
There is no way a still camera will ever replace a camcorder. The 5d2 is for those who can’t afford both!

  • Assuming the RED Scarlet vaporware becomes a real product, and if they can deliver a “complete kit” for $3700 then we will see.

  • You are just guessing and joking, since you rely on model’s name (Rebel) and a 2012 invasion to make your statements… What companies do have nothing to do with that.

We did contact Canon more than once, and not only with customer service indeed…

  • This is just a fabricated personal wish list. How can you tell? Where it says Canon is developing CCD sensors for a Pro camera. There is an unspoken agreement between Canon/Panasonic/Sony that Canon will not compete in the “Pro” market segment – and that is why Sony and panasonic will support their lenses on their cameras. The prosumer camera market is a different story. This is obviously a fan boy’s wish list as to what he wants to see from canon.

  • “The percentage of people who bought and will buy this camera mainly because the video feature is not 4% as someone say, FAR from it…”

Don’t keep us in suspense. What is the percentage?

  • LOL, it made me laugh when I read some of you guys thinking, first of all, what RED is going to do will not make Canon run around like a little girl cause the price of a RED DSMC will be soo expensive that even your whining will put to a halt.

Besides, if video is like sooo important to some of you, why don’t get a professional video camera instead? It has a better grip, better video recording options and besides, think from a business point of view kay instead like a little children, why the heck would Canon, who also makes video camera both professional and non professional to create a camera that has a great potential of cannibalizing its video camera division sales?

And of course Canon would be promoting its HD video feature in dSLR, its called marketing! But doesn’t necessarily mean they are oblige to give the user the expected video controls.

  • “Personally, I think 96% of 5DM2 owners are still photographers. Canon’s not too concerned about the 4% crying out for manual control in video mode.”

Ding! A winner. I have a Mark II, it’s awesome. I point it at things, hit the shutter and art just comes out. I’m spending more time shooting and less time ‘shopping afterwords, which is what I think everyone wants.

I’ve taken, as of this morning, 1283 images and exactly 7 of those are videos. Including 3 the day I got it just to try it out. This is a little over one half a percent.

Is it fun? Yes. Is it great to have when you need it? You bet. Would I like to have full manual control? Definitely! Do I really need it on what I purchased as a still camera? No.

I’m fully aware that many people want full manual control. I’ve signed the petition, I’ve e-mailed and called Canon and spoken to my local camera sales rep. I’ve done what I can at this point. But honestly, I’d rather just be out shooting than on the phone talking about it. If I wanted full manual video, I would have bought a video camera, not spending time and money to kludge together a solution on a device that it isn’t designed for.

Go out, rent a real HD video camera and just shoot on that, it’s just easier and it will look just as good, but without the pain and anguish of making something work in a way it wasn’t designed for.

  • Um, this thread is about a new Canon “video camera” not a DSLR…and the RED’s $3700 price for a complete 3K video camera with lens is definately in the ball park of Canon’s pro line. I will give you the “oh crap what have I got myself into” for price on all the infrastructure you’ll have to build for it though.

  • Any information about the date of official announcement of this new pro and semi-pro camera lineup ? 2009 or 2010 ? Thanks !

  • Go out and buy a video camera … you guys that just like photography just don’t get it. Have you compare the footage of this camera vs the canon xha1 or the Panasonic hvx 200 of anything. that’s what I thought you don’t have a clue. Instead of criticizing try to learn the facts. This camera shoot great video, but there is little control for artist to shoot creatively. And canon can do something about it. I’ts like having a beautiful wife and she can’t cook at all. It’s good but you still sacrifice a lot.

  • Here’s a question for you all. Now don’t be too harsh if this is a stupid question as I only have stills cameras (5DmarkII, 30D) at the moment but am considering having a look at a second hand XL2. Are the Canon EF stills lenses interchangable or usable on the XL2 and visa versa?

  • “By using the optional EF adapter, you can match your XL2 to any one of the huge assortment of Canon EOS photography lenses. Since these lenses are designed for 35mm still photo cameras, and because the XL2’s image plane is a bit smaller than one-third inch in size, there is a magnification factor of at least 7.8 applied to the focal length of the EOS lens, depending on which aspect ratio you’re using. For instance, if you mounted a 200mm EOS lens on your XL2, the effective focal length works out to 1560mm, which is a much longer telephoto shot than the standard 20x video lens is capable of. When you use Canon’s really big EOS lenses, such as the 400mm, 500mm and 600mm lenses, the resulting magnification is like turning the XL2 into a telescope… perfect for some limited applications such as surveillance or wildlife videography. It’s also possible to mount a wide-angle prime lens, combined with a wide-angle adapter, to achieve a medium focal length video lens with the quality of Canon EOS glass.”

    http://www.dvinfo.net/canonxl2/articles/article04.php

    Adapter here:

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/146134-REG/Canon_3162A002_EF_Adapter_XL_for.html

    costs like $450

long story short, pay half a grand to put EF lenses on your XL2, XL2’s lenses won’t fit on a EOS body, and if they did they wouldn’t completely cover a APS-C sensor.

  • Thank you so much for the information. I do have quite a lot of EF glass covering the entire range from wide angle (14mm) through to telephoto (400mm). Is there anyone out there who has actually used EF lenses in this way? How do they perform against the video lenses?
