Mr Galbraith says “No, it's not better”.

I stopped reading his reports about the 1D/1Ds autofocus issues after I couldn't replicate them. 300 2.8's, 500 f/4's, telelconverters… I couldn't make the camera AF as poor as he claims it does. I have no idea what to think really.

Here's his report anyway.

  1. You can reproduce his poor focusing shots by focusing on contrastless white or black tshirts.

    :)

  2. It doesn’t suprise me that many photographers are unable to reproduce the issue, its limited to photos of fast moving objects with a fast lens wide open (Shallow depth of field where dead on focus is a requirement). At lower apertures, it may not be doing that well either, but the depth of field hides it.

Most photographers will still love it, and, as he says, it is still better than the Nikon D3 which is one of the reasons why he hasn’t switched.

  3. word what ed said, but it’s not necessarily the shallow depth of field – the issues are/were severe enough to even go beyond the DOF of f4 or 5.6 of a 200mm (ok – this might still be “wide open” for some ;))

the thing is it’s an issue with the AF*tracking* – and there esp. with unevenly moving objects and/or multiple moving objects interfering each other. it’s something one hardly can simulate, but it’s what most sportshooters are confronted with every day. the most obvious and reproducible scenario was a runner directly approaching me and crossing the AF-field with his hand in front of his body.. this completely confused the mark3’s tracking and let the AF considerably jump behind the point it should be.

as my mark3 died a wet death, i’m now back using the mk2N, which doesn’t suffer from this bug, but i now realize how much better the mk3’s AF was in other areas.

  4. If he sticks with Canon despite all his complaining, then how bad is the MkIII really?. I would have though he ran off to Nikon after all this trouble.
