USA Rebates

April 24th, 2009 Posted in Canon General

A bit more info

Spend the savings on your significant other.

Spend the savings on your significant other.

It appears the 70-200 f/2.8L will have a $200 rebate and there will be an $80 rebate on the 24-70. I’m sure other “L” glass will be included as well. I haven’t seen the 100-400 or 35L on a rebate program in a while (in Canada), it’ll be interesting to see if it shows up now.

I would expect to see a “buy more, save more” type of rebate program in Canada as well. The current rebate scheme is pretty lame.

I have no information about rebate programs in Europe. I rarely hear about those before they happen. Feel free to let me know if you work in retail.

thanks steven

First that’s not the price of an IS version. Second Trade-In is not a rebate. Third Rebate info usually shows up about before, not a month.

That is my receipt for the lens I purchased. I don’t know why it says “trade-in” on it. I did not trade ANYTHING in when I purchased this lens, it was a $200 instant rebate…period. I was told if I wanted the IS version the SAME rebate would apply.

Also here in Denmark there are a rebate on EF 70-200mm f:2.8L IS and EF 200mm f:2.0L IS.
The rebate is 1000,- DKr about $200,- US

The dealership I have been talking to suspect that we will see a mark II version of both lenses very soon.

do rebates and price drops usualy an indication its going to be replaced? so the 70-200LIS and 24-70 might be replaced?

The 24-70/2.8L will be around until next Feb/March. That is when it should be replaced. We all hope that the 70-200/2.8L IS gets an upgrade; but Lord only knows when we will get that and the 200-400/4.0.

Why ? what is wrong with the current 70-200 is ?

I’m hoping more for the 24-70mm upgrade.

Yet, I’m pretty sure it is not going to happen before the 1d mark IV upgrade, which inturn my happen at any time between tommorw and next year.

What do you mean by “we ALL hope that the 70-200/2.8L IS gets an upgrade”? What’s wrong with this lens?

    Sorry…

I did not know that hoping for a refresh meant that something was wrong. I shoot with dozens of fellow photogs that would love a refreshed 70-200/2.8L IS.

I would like the newest IS, slightly better sealing, and a tweak to AF/IQ performance.

I would also love an update of my 300/2.8 and 500/4.0; but I think that the lenses are amazing. They will be with us until March 2011 at least.

As I flip through the back of my “EF Lens Work III” book I notice that the 2.8L IS has the worst MTF of the four 70-200’s with a 1.4TC II at both ends. Similar story with 2X and bare.

But no nothing wrong, just things that could be even better. And heck its my money that Canon can have if they get me something better to get the job done.

    Sorry again

Oh and the last 70-200/2.8L IS I bought was on rebate something like 3 years ago. Rebate does not equal new coming. That said the 24-70/2.8L should be on clearance/replaced March, 2010.

I thought that the 70-200 IS was an amazing lens until I tried it next to some Canon gems such as the 135 f/2, 200 f/2, the Nikon zoom lenses as well. It gets the job done but I found that different copies of the lens have serious soft spots wide open (one copy was unacceptably soft at 70mm, another at 200mm, another at around 135mm). There is definitely room for improvement. I have actually phased it out of my shooting when I can get away with not having the flexibility of the zoom…but I would love it if Canon could come up with some great zoom optics here- at least as good as the new f/4 IS version, and if they could match Nikon’s 14-24 and 24-70 IQ I would be thrilled.

70-200IS and 24-70 updates are top priorities for me. 100-400 update wouldn’t be a professional purchase for me- but it sure would be fun!

No, being on the rebate list does not mean a lens is being replaced. in years past many of the “L” lenses have been listed. Typically, all three of the 70-200mm lenses, the 24-70, both 85mm lenses, the 50mm 1.2 and 1.4, the 100mm macro, the 60mm macro, the 17-55mm IS, and the flash units. These tend to be high profit items so they can cut the price and still make a bundle.

In the case of cameras, it does appear that slower selling ones make the rebate list.

Hi All, Would anyone have any info on EU rebates? Have they coincided with US rebates in the past or is there pattern to the time of year when rebates have been offered in the past?

I would expect to see slightly more generous rebates or a broader range this time around considering Canon must be taking a sales hit between global financial situation and their increases in prices.

Maybe I’m just hoping it would mean that I could stretch my money to afford all the new gear I want! Thanks.

but ultrawide-angle to telephoto zooms tend to perform very poorly, especially at the wide end. why don’t u try a 17-40 on a back-up body?

Instant rebate is the way to go, hate those post-in-wait-for-ages rebates….

secondly… Canon NZ never offers rebates, all they do is “rubbish giveaways” that would make newbies feel good, but not a tangible rebate…

Hopefully there’s a rebate for just the 50D. Last year at this time the 40D by itself had a $200 rebate.

Well it looks like the rebates will be here early this year:

Adorama JUST raised the EF 50 f1.2 from $1400 to $1499 (they felt the need to take the ENTIRE $100 rebate)! (B&H still has it at $1400, but probably not for long).

Adorama JUST raised the EF 100-400IS from $1460 to $1499 (they felt the need to take 40% of your $100 rebate).

Adorama JUST raised the EF-S 10-22 from $710 to $740 (they felt the need to take 60% of your $50 rebate).

How nice of them! I’m sure everyone else will follow step on Monday…

These items are currently in extremely short supply, and we needed to supplement our stock in order to try and satisfy our customers’ requirements – the alternative is to remove them from our inventory for the time being.

To try to meet demand, we took a decision to start buying stock from small vendors (who in turn have been furiously buying up stock from dealers across the USA), and wholesale it.

It has nothing, I repeat NOTHING to do with the rebates. Nor are we trying to price gouge our customers.

So, How do these rebates work?

Ive been looking at a Canon XSI(450d) for a while now, and would love to take advantage of the rebate sale.

(Quick choice justification: I dont really care about the movie mode of the T1i and the XSI(450d)seems to have everything that I am looking for).

Anyway, I was looking at online stores like Amazon, B&H, J&R, Adorama, but it seems like they bundle the XSI(450d)body and lenses with a bunch of accessories. Will the Rebate be reflected in the shopping cart if you buy one of these kits, or do you purchase the items separately and then the rebate is applied?

This is my first time through this DSLR purchasing process, and it has proven to be quite a time consuming and confusing process… but hey Ive learned alot.

Thanks for all your posts on this site they have been very helpful!
