*UPDATE* 7D North American Availability
September 24th, 2009 Posted in Canon 7D
In Stock
Vistek in Toronto apparently received their first shipment of 7D’s today. They won’t be selling them until tomorrow I’ve been told.
Thanks Dan
UPDATE
I have a couple of denials in regards to the camera being available today at Aden and Downtown Camera in Toronto. I have had friends check Canon’s ordering site and the camera has yet to be allocated to a few stores.
It’s not much yet
I have word that a few stores in Toronto will have them tomorrow. Two of them being Downtown Camera and Aden Camera. There is reports of a third unnamed store having them.
This post will probably update a lot over the next few days.

Just don’t get overly too excited about a camera that is not going to pruduce but noisy-blacks narrow-DR images. you don’ believe me, just go compare it to top tier cameras, check imaging resources “House” shot as a good comparison example or anything else you consider a fair comparison.

Umm.. I did as you asked, and I’m not seeing what you’re seeing.
I’ve also compared various other shots (i.e. the model shots etc) and it seems that the 7D stomps the performance of the Nikon APS-C sensors… Hell, it’s even competitive with the 7D and D700.

don be too presumptive, if I am openly dissatisfied with Canon, that doesn’t automatically mean I am promoting Nikon or anybody else, I actually own three canon digitals, one EOS and 2 powershots, and nothing else from any other brand!

I’m not presuming anything. I’m making comparisons against Nikon because they, fairly, have been the sensors to beat lately.

It won’t be as good as 5D2, that’s for sure.

buy on the rumor (that it’s a good camera, so people say), and sell on the news (when you check your images on the monitor for the first time an you start to ask yourself: what have I done? why did I waste my money on something i am not sure of? how could i’ve possibly believed the hype that 18MP on 1.6x sensor is ok when Canon in 2006 said that they didn’t want to go beyond 8MP in 30D, because they thought it would impact IQ?!!!).

I would guess that if folks are saying Canon has an embargo until 9/26, that if Amazon has ‘em they will start to ship Saturday. Which über-sucks for me since I leave for a trip on Saturday and won’t get back until Thursday, and I wanted the camera for the trip and got overnight shipping.

Amazon.ca or Amazon.com? I haven’t heard of any US stores (online or otherwise) reporting these cameras in stock (Even with an embargo).
Reply
September 25th, 2009 at 3:02 pm
When I saw this, I decided to call Amazon “customer service”. I told them the above info about the North America date and they told me that it was in their system to be shipped out on October 30. I asked if it was a confirmed date or just an estimated date and she stuck to the claim that it was confirmed.
I seriously doubt a CSR peon knows that information from just looking at a status screen, so who knows, really what Amazon’s target ship date is on the pre-orders. Amazon customer care is really sub-par. I need to stop ordering from them, really … oh well.

Matt Reply:

I have found that Amazon is really pessimistic when it comes to ship dates.
Although, in the case of the 7D, who knows how many Canon is sending Amazon from the first batch of cameras. Part of me would prefer to not get one of the first batch. The other part of me wants my 7D unboxing pictures on Engadget :)

in the moment this news item is on the top of the home page, but in a few days upcoming items will push it down, it can quickly go to page 2 & become difficult to find (while it is still being updated), here comes the permalink role, instead of going to the homepage you type http://www.canonrumors.com/2009/09/7d-north-american-availability/ in order to avoid getting lost in the homepage as described above. this permalink in canonrumors system obligatorily opens the news + the comments which we all post under it. There is no way to access the news item directly and purely (w/o the comments) and thats bad for both the site and readers who aren’t interested in the comments (wasted bandwidth & time).

I was already eying the SanDisk Extreme Pro, and Rob Galbraith’s article provides more info about it than I had previously seen. The article verifies that this UDMA 6 card is compatible with Canon 5D MkII, but doesn’t discuss 7D compatibility at all — too new to have been tested perhaps.
I would hope that since the 7D has been built as an action camera, it would be capable of using the newest CF card technology.

Amazon continues to piss people off with their conservative approach on informing the consumer. It was like this on prior camera launches, the Wii, the Xbox 360, and a magnitude of other product releases…. I find it hard to believe that they can’t provide more incite to the customer base that are following their 7D order and completely clueless as to when it has a likelihood to ship. Riddle me how Best Buy has the ability to give an estimate that their camera will arrive between 10/10-10/19, yet Amazon continues to claim they aren’t being informed enough to provide an accurate shipment date. These companies specialize in logistics/supply chains and even if some part of that link is dependent on outside forces, they make it their business to stay informed internally on when a product will arrive. ..Time is money…I smell BS.

good questions. I have found Amazon reliable and delivers promptly.
I wonder if Canon is distributing more kits than bodies early-on to develop a broader customer base. On the other hand, those wanting only a body are already part of the customer base and it seems like a good idea to keep your current customers happy. Either way the delivery schedule for bodies versus kits is likely well known by everyone except the customer. Supply and demand at work?

AVAILABILITY UPDATE FROM CANON…
Camera marketing representative at Canon USA, indicates that units of the new Canon EOS 7D digital SLR will begin to ship from Canon distribution centers to retailers in the first part of next week (September 28th!). Factor in the logistics of shipping caseloads of cameras to a long list of dealers, and the Canon 7D should be in the hands of a decent quantity of pre-order customers in numerous U.S. states and Canadian provinces by the end of next week.

Now what’s really funny is, i walk right out of the store and call them at that exact Ritz Store! I’m told on the phone there is NONE in stock at all until the end of October into November. Sounds fishy to you? Here is what i was told when I confronted them while I was still on the phone walking back into the store. “The 7D’s they have arre ONLY for the walk in customers, period!” I felt like I was an undercover 6ABC News Reporter or something. I think the Manager almost pooped himself when he saw me walk in holding and talking on the phone to him. I wish i had a film crew with me to catch the look on his face!

Yes, the BODY only.
You should expect to just see the Body 7D’s way before you see the Kits Come out. Why? Canon had seen a great number of the 50D Kits last year where thousands of the lenses from the Kits all showed up on EBay. I’m just as much to blame for that too, as I did the same. The 7D is not really a camera for the average user, so Canon Marketing looks at selling to the installed base of semipros & pros that already have a stock of lenses built up.
P.S. 17th Street Photo has the 7D in stock right now for the 1699.99 price + 8.00 Ground UPS Shipping from NYC. B&H who I also buy from heavily is looking at 2 weeks, and mostly there messed up from the Jewish holiday being closed.
I feel nerdy and I have to confess, I went and bought a second one tonight, because now that I have it in my hands I really need a second one. I’m trying not to be a pig about it, but compared to my new 1D MarkIII at 11 fps, the 7D just blows it out of the water in quality.

NYC to South Jersey Ground is only 8.00, and it arrives in 1 day, so I’m kinda lucky that way in the location to NYC. Also as most know, NY to NJ has no tax at all which is another reason to buy online saves me 119.00 on the price. I know the gov is working on a way to stop all that from happening, but until then lets just enjoy it.
