London, 20 October 2009 – Canon today announces that it is currently developing a firmware update to the EOS 5D Mark II to enable the recording of high definition 1080p video at 24 and 25fps. The decision to develop new firmware to support these features has been taken following feedback received from cinematographers and photographers.

  1. well, some useful other simple things in new firmware?….
    1) with Av and iso auto, the possibility to set a minimum shutter speed. Now the shutter speed is almost linked to the “classical rule” of 1/focal lenght; many times would be desirable a higher or lower value. Many times I need a 1/300 shutter speed even if I’m using the 50mm, other times I would like a 1/60 even if I work with 200mm with stabilizer on. (Also why, with Av and iso auto, and flash on camera the iso value does not raise over 400 and the “rule” above doesn’t work?)

    2) in M and iso auto it would be desirable the same behavior like in movie mode (iso changes while f and speed are fixed), while now, in M, isoauto is fixed to iso400 (if I wanted 400 fixed I would have set “400″ not isoauto..)

    3) Good job in 7D with customizable buttons: even if 5d lacks of the added button I’d like to set the “*” and the “af-on” as I like. For example *=ael, af-on=fel…. (options menu for each button like in 7d, also for “half press”)

4)…..+- 3EV exposure correction (not necessary a new lcd panel, for example for showing -3EV in the viewfinder and lcd is possible the label blinking on -2 and a second label (not blinking) on -1..). In wedding photography for example I’d find it very useful, sometimes with flash on camera, when it’s not possible to have a fast enough shutter time (working in Av and fill flash) -3EV correction (ok +-4 would be better!) would avoid to set the camera in M (same result, but lowering the EV compensation is faster than turn the knob in M..if you are aiming and do not have 3 hands)

..and, I don’t know if it’s possible by firmware but the possibility to use the speedlight 270 ex as master via camera menu’?…I’ve a st-e2 but it’s quite obsolete…

  2. YES, IN FACT I don’t think they need so many months to release an already beta tested firmware, unless they are adding more functions or it’s a marketing strategy…

To all those people who didn’t call Canon yet, now you know you are not alone. You can call to register a Feature request for the 5D Mark II.

    CHECK the Reference Features list:

Thanks to everyone supporting, including Canon Rumors :)

  3. I’ll tell you why – when the 24p update is added to the markII, you’ll notice that the jello and skew goes from bad to just plain awful, possibly unusable. With only one digic IV processor to handle to video information from the full-frame sensor, I can promise you things won’t be pretty.

They announce it early for the attention, get people excited and hopefully sell more 5dII’s to wannabe filmmakers. Then quietly roll out the firmware and hope people don’t make a stink about how bad it is.

Until they have dual Digic V processors and a redesigned sensor, the video sampling from Canon’s DSLRs are going to be riddled with the same problems (moire, aliasing, low resolution, and bad bad jello)
