New review Justin has posted a new review for us. This time for the Canon EF 85 f/1.2L II, Canon’s king of lowlight for now. It’s a lens that’s hard to use well at the beginning, but if you give it some time, you’ll grow to love it and all its quirks. Says Justin…. “The more I used this lens, the more I got to know it, the better my images became, and the more impressed I was with it. Often relying on flash modifiers and scenes built with speedlights and strobes, I took pleasure in exploring natural light situations,…

Press Release TOKYO, March 4, 2013—Canon Inc. announced today that the company has successfully developed a high-sensitivity 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor exclusively for video recording. Delivering high-sensitivity, low-noise imaging performance, the new Canon 35 mm CMOS sensor*1 enables the capture of Full HD video even in exceptionally low-light environments. The newly developed CMOS sensor features pixels measuring 19 microns square in size, which is more than 7.5-times the surface area of the pixels on the CMOS sensor incorporated in Canon’s top-of-the-line EOS-1D X and other digital SLR cameras. In addition, the sensor’s pixels and readout circuitry employ new technologies that…

More high performance Zeiss primes coming I’ve been told by a good source what Zeiss has planned for the coming year or so as far as new prime lenses. There will be a 28 f/1.4 introduced and an update to the Planar 85 f/1.4 (probably the weakest lens in the lineup). Don’t expect both lenses to be announced at the same time, and there could be a big gap between them. These are going to be on par with the new Distagon 55mm f/1.4 that was announced at Photokina. cr

Abraham Joffe captures stills from 4K video with the EOS-1D C A good article and video on the Canon Europe site about extracting still images from the 4K video produced by the Canon EOS-1D C. Says Joffe about the possibiliies: “This should excite photographers: their skills sets are about creating beautiful images that work, and I think motion photographs will take more photographic skill than video skill,” he reveals. “Video is about multiple shots that work together to tell a story; motion photos have sound and camera movement stripped away and you are coming down to one moment in one…

Replacement to 60D? We’ve been hearing over the last few days about an announcement coming at the end of March, the exact date is unknown at this time. If I were a betting man, I’d say it’ll be the 19th or 26th of March, 2013. We’ll see a new DSLR, most likely the replacement for the EOS 60D. There’s no spec list to speak of yet, but we’re quite confident that the 70D will be a big step up from the 60D in terms of specs. We expect it to return to the level that the EOS 50D was at,…

Going wider? We’ve spoken about the existence of an EF 14-24 f/2.8L in the past, a lens that a lot of people want to see come to fruition. We’ve been told that an EF 12-24 f/2.8L exists in prototype form and could become a product instead of the EF 14-24 f/2.8L. I can only recall Sigma making such a lens for full frame cameras. Going this wide would certainly put some space between the cheaper (assuming based on Canon pricing history) EF 17-40 f/4L and EF 16-35 f/2.8L II. This is the first I have heard of an EF 12-24 f/2.8L, so take…

Our review of the Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT Justin has completed his review of the Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT, and it’s a pretty thorough look at Canon’s latest flagship Speedlite. The review is quite positive and seems to say that moving from a 430 or a 580 may be worthwhile, especially if you want to get more serious about your flash photography. Justin’s comments “Have a Canon camera? Need more light? Buy this flash. Flash photography may not be easy to master, but luckily for you, there are so many incredible resources on the internet to help you learn how to use…
