Canon unit shedding more than 1,100 contract jobs: officials
TOKYO (AFP) – More than 1,100 contract workers are losing their jobs at two subsidiaries of Japan's Canon Inc. due to production cutbacks, officials said Friday.

Canon, often hailed as a success story in Japan's recovery from a recession a decade ago, is joining other major Japanese manufacturers that are cutting output and jobs to cope with the global economic downturn.

Calgary & Montreal Service Centres to be closed?
I received an email from a reader that both locations would be closed in cost cutting for Canon Canada. That would leave Mississauga to fix everything. I cannot find any official word on the topic.

I'll poke around.

  1. And so it begins! I’m sure it will affect the delivery and support of the DSLR. Hopefully, those who wanting the 5Dmk2 will still get it in 2009 and those who already have the 5Dmk2 will receive a fix to the “black dot” syndrome.

  2. Wow, service was already slow… what it could be if it’s true.

Anyone knows if nikon could repair Canon’s cameras/lenses ;-) just kidding.

  3. From my understanding, Canon Canada already subcontracts a lot of lower end camera repairs to a third party, so it might not dramatically affect the already slowish turn around that much for consumer gear if the rumour is true. For CPS members it will be a huge PITA shipping repairs across the country to Mississauga, and likely having to endure longer turnarounds, especially considering the questionable success rate for complicated repairs on the first try. At least in the last couple years there has been more loaner equipment available to offset the slow turnaround of pro repairs. I wonder if we’ll soon see the Canadian CPS program revamped like in the US with an annual fee and different service tiers?

As for production in Japan, I’d be very surprised if Canon reduced resources for a hot item like the 5DII.

  4. Adobe is laying off around 600 people too! Crazy.

Oh BTW I GOT MY 5DmkII everybody!!!!!

I cancelled my preorder after going into a Best Buy early today before work. They had 1 body left. I can’t believe I bought a camera from BB, so sad. But with all the preorder lines…
