Guardians of the Forest

I wanted to mention that no animals in this film were baited. The first comments on Facebook were ridiculous. I know, it's Facebook.

Yes, there are hides around the Boreal Forest for photography that do bait the animals. It is more than possible to head out and shoot without doing so. It just takes extra work, being up crazy early and spending all day outside. Some days it won't work out, other days it will.

Note: No debating the topic of baiting, it's a fool's errand. I avoid it at all costs.

Hmm... very hard to believe, unfortunately. I know many wildlife photographers here in Finland who spend months outside every year looking for things like this, and never see anything. Even when hunters or other knowledgeable people have pointed them to the "right" place. Even close to the paid hides, where wolves and bears are frequent visitors.

Both wolves and bears are extremely timid when it comes to humans. Even when you see them, they most likely see or smell you long before and take off. It is against most of the odds to spend a relatively short time here and find anything like what we have seen in this video without visiting the bait hides. But yeah, that's only my feeling as a Finnish person. I can be wrong, but I would highly recommend participating in a lottery if that is truly the case. 99.99% of all wolf and bear footage you see from Finland is shot from bait hides or near them. Either way, the footage in the video is very high quality, all respect to the maker.

Edit: Most likely in Kuhmo, there is a paid place where people have shot photos with very(!) similar backgrounds. Of course, bogs look similar everywhere... so, who knows.

The Canon EOS R7 Mark II is in the Wild

My guess is that the camera you are describing is a $3000 tp $3500 camera. All the evidence from the way Canon and Nikon have been reluctant to upgrade or even make a high level crop sensor camera makes me think it is unlikely. Nor will Canon care if the R3 mark II infringes on the R1 sales, as long as the R3 mark II sales are adequate. Either way they sell a profitable camera.
Nikon has been reluctant to make a high level crop sensor camera. Canon did make a quality crop sensor camera with the R7 and they are improving on it immensely with the R7ii slated for this year 2026.

Supposedly Nikon is bringing the Z90 ( unicorn ) to market in 2026 as well though have my doubts on the validity even if the information comes from a reputable YouTube source.

The Canon EOS R7 Mark II is in the Wild

I’d be happier if there had have been leaks and rumours about the R7ii during the olympics. I’m hoping the body was olympics worthy and it just flew under the radar. I really want an APSC that pairs well with my R5. However, I guess when you have access to all the big whites Canon had there to loan out, an APSC looses much of its appeal…

Nikon Takes on Viltrox

As I posted in another thread, Viltrox have been making Z-mount lenses since 2021 and have 25 Z-mount lenses on their site. I find it hard to believe that Nikon has only just discovered that Viltrox has been making Z-mount lenses without a license agreement.
It seems that Nikon only just got their Z mount patents approved in China, so now they are going after the Chinese makers. Viltrox was first. Now Sirui has pulled all Z mount lenses from Chinese stores. This will probably ramp up over the coming weeks & months as more makers get hit. Including the E-Z adapter companies.

Sigma Announces the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG II Art

As the third party manufacturers such as Sigma get better, while not raising the price considerably, this is a ongoing problem for Canon's RF mount that is only going to get worse.
I think the fact that Sigma is getting so good while being so reasonably priced (comparatively at least) is why neither Canon nor Nikon will ever allow them unrestricted access to their mirrorless mounts. Canon hasn't even let Tamron into FF yet, something Nikon did quite a while ago.

Canon Hints at a new Advanced Compact Model

I am very interested by this camera. I have been looking at the Fujifilm X-E5 which I love. But I am in the Canon ecosystem, my main camera is an R5 and I also use an R7. So this would be the small cary in my kit. I need it to be photo-centric with proper zoom range for that (24-120mm type of range), an EVF, a tilt screen, and ideally the old R7 (mark I) sensor or something of that quality. Weather sealing would be very welcome as well. I hope it will not be another creator camera.
i wonder what a "new" customer looks like from canon's point of view. more likely females in their mid 20's than the canon/sony-istas reading the blog. what do they want?
