This is really a big deal, providing it's optically sound. The lens that Canon should have made right off the bat really, but they seem to have no interest in providing reasonably high-end solutions for APS-C shooters. My friend has an R7 to replace one of her crop Nikon DSLR bodies that failed (after some 250,000 actuations), since Nikon doesn't even have anything close to the R7. I gave her my 18-150 to try, but she gave it back because it felt flimsy. She opted, instead, to get an adapter and use the EF-S 18-135 USM, which optically is pretty good and has the advantage of feeling quite sturdy. The USM is the last rendition of that focal length range, and is optically better than the first version.

My M6II has the MP-E65mm and is next to the focus stacking rail, it's hard to beat 32MP in APS-C for tiny subjects!

The zoom range would have been very welcome, but it's come too late and I already have the excellent Sigma 18-50. That plus the (admittedly minor) inconvenience of rings which operate backwards for Canon users mean I won't be taking up Tamron's offer :-(

I notice that traveling with a combination of R5 II, TS-E, 24-105, and 14-35 has a bit more impact on endurance during a day of city walking. So, I try a lighter (smaller) combination. But naturally, I want to sacrifice as little quality and flexibility (focal length choices) as possible. However, if the subject is worthwhile, and the result of the smaller/lighter setup is inferior (and I don't think this will be dramatically), then I put it on the list to go back to. But first, it remains to be seen how satisfied I am with the 20-50. So, just a little more patience.

The problem with your wish list is that the telephoto end of small sensor super zooms is almost always diffraction limited, so no matter how fine the lens is, it will be soft. The only way around that is to keep the lens fast, i.e. f/2.8 or faster over the whole range and that makes a 40:1 zoom huge, even on a 1/2.3 sensor. The Panasonic ZS 300 is a 25:1, constant f/2.8 and is stays decently sharp over the full range, but then, again, it only has a 12MP sensor. If you go smaller pixels and longer zoom, the lens needs to be both faster and much bigger. Physics is a hard mistress. The Nikson P1000, which has an excellent lens is very soft at the long end at f/8 with a 16MP sensor. I have both the FZ300, and the P1000, so I understand the limitations of each. My R7 with a 200-800 that is f/9 at the long end provides much better detail thanks to the much bigger pixels not being as far into diffraction territory, but even there, diffraction is a big factor in the result. Bottom line, there is no point in wishing for something physics won't let you have.

i keep wishing i had a compelling reason to buy a 200 F/2. the problem i see with constant aperture zooms is how big the front element is, and how such are large front element should deliver an even wider aperture for the wide angle end of the zoom range. if you buy a 70-200 F/2 and shoot a bunch at 100 you might have been better off with a 100 F/1.4.

my notion of canon's reputation is: I buy tools from them, the tools work as expected for a long time and if i have trouble canon will try to help. i know lots of canon shooters and this is the reputation they have. a reputation goes way beyond the catalog of products being offered. the products being offered change, but canon's reputation for quality has been consistent since i purchased by first EF-L lens in 1998.

OK, cheap new FF is an oxymoron. There is a lot of great used FF gear. But the implication that the only way into photography is through a new FF camera just isnt true. If anything that's gatekeeping. Id wager the vast majority of folks who started photography with a digital camera did not start on full frame.

And yes I shot an EOS R for about a year with a wide array of EF glass, largely because at the time there basically wasn't any RF glass. It was not an enjoyable experience. The only decent 50s were absolutely gargantuan for example. The lack of IBIS made handheld video a dubious affair even with wide angle IS glass.

RF has filled in to where I could make do, but if budget is a constraint, new FF is off the table. You will get so much money going used and/or crop, and compared to the RP, probably not lose any IQ. FF does not wash all sins. The 6D2 was meh in 2017 so the same sensor in an MILC just doesn't work IMO. But Canon had to release something so they did. IMO R really started with the number bodies.

But I don't need stats to know; I don't use my camera to photograph people or places, wide and standard angle shots are exceeedingly rare* (I use my phone for that). By far the commonest zoom I would mount now is the 100-400 and I use it most at 400. More often, I just take the 800 and maybe an extender on a trip. In the meantime I was kinda serious about my statement. I do consider it a general "truth". The 28-135 range is enough for most situations. Event, documentary, street, food, etc. Anything below and beyond is specialized - underwater, nightsky, macro, sport/wildlife, whatever.
As for me, I'd love to go with only 3 lenses - 14/1.4, 28-135/2, 300-600/5.6. Not that the 28-135/2 is by any means realistic.
