Canon Officially Announces the RF 20-50mm f/4L IS USM PZ

Judging by the photograph on dpreview, it looks like the new cap just lacks the protrusions we can cut on the original, to make it fit in more positions.
Indeed, only two tabs. But I have no desire to cut down the number of lens caps I have to save $8 each.

Another failed joke by me. Neuro's reply about "to cut down" was to M4ndr4ke's post immediately above it to cut out part of the original RF cap. Neuro's could be taken two ways: cut out or cut down.

According to Canon (France + Germany), it has fluorine coating only on the front lens.
But, since the rear lens is protruding, a rear lens cap still is a necessity. :)
My jokes aren't going down well today. B&H wrote that it has a flourine coating - flour is dusty so it would need a dust cap.

I wonder how this lens would compete with the EF 17-40 F4L at equivalent focal lengths both wide open and stopped down. Basically from 20mm to 40mm.

If you look at TDP crops, the 17-40 holds its own at high res, even vs the RF 24-70 2.8L @ 24mm.

Something tells me with the size of this new 20-50L AND its published MTF curves, it might not perform quite as well at least in terms of test charts. I hope i'm wrong because ive been dreaming of such a lens for a while.

I've owned the 17-40L on and off since 2005 with my most recent $200 copy being a bargain given it it can resolve (after 20mm or so)

I didn’t realise there’s a new rear cap, perhaps I’ve handled it today and didn’t notice.

Currently I’m already used to them, I know how much I rotate my lenses when I remove them from the cameras, so I always know where to aim the notch at, so I just feel it with my thumb and align properly.
It is actually a good design. Once you learn how much to rotate you don't have to look at the lens any more. Just find the mark on the cap with your finger

Whereas I absolutely would, although I change lenses fairly infrequently so maybe laziness will win out.
I did both!
Modified the old ones and ordered the same amount of new ones.
I strangely never had enough of them.
Besides, I drilled three shallow holes where they align for mounting, and filled the holes with white enamel.
Much easier to install them in darkness.
So, if you ever buy a used Leica R, M, Canon EF or RF lens, you'll know it was mine.
But I decline any responsibility for them, and won't answer any warranty claim!

You could cut down the number of lenses.
I was totally confused when I read your post, but I think I understand it now. I guess you meant to "cut down the number of spare lenses" by buying more camera bodies and attaching the lenses permanently to avoid lenses swapping and saving the money for new lens caps. Yeah, makes sense. I´d get a camera for the RF 100-500mm and never take it off.

Canon Officially Announces the RF 20-50mm f/4L IS USM PZ

Handled it already

EDIT:

First impressions

The lens is really light for its size, it almost feels hollow. You can see it's very slightly wider than the VCM lenses.

The zoom range is lovely.
Autofocus is very fast.

The zoom ring is very loose if you use the manual zoom. For general use there’s really no lag; if you turn it extremely fast (on purpose), there’s just a little.
The W-T zone works like an analog control, so you can adjust the speed of zoom by rotating more or less, and it is spring loaded.

I took a few photographs with the lens, but I haven’t seen them yet on the computer. Anyway, my 20MP R6 isn't much of a challenge.
I have watched many videos, but I have yet to see a single one demonstrating the zoom functionality.
Being that is what makes this lens so different, it is pretty frustrating.
The RF-S 14-30 PZ only has the T---------W zoom rocker.
I tried the lens yesterday, what do you want to know?

A little Minor League Baseball on Mother's Day.

The team in the Black and Pink is the Richmond Flying Squirrels. They are a AA team in Richmond Virginia. This was a very fun day in the ballpark.

All Photos with a Canon R1. I'll list the lens used under the photo. All pics with my normal daytime setting 1/4000, Max aperture, ISO Auto, except the one fisheye pic where I shifter to f8, 1/250, ISO Auto.

Bryan/TDP provides a more complete description of the zoom functionality, which turns out to be both of the options that were debated (rocker switch vs. free rotation). That is consistent with what's suggested by the zoom markings on the lens.

Introducing All of Canon’s New EOS R Accessories

I’m genuinely impressed with Canon’s updated RF rear dust cap. It’s a thoughtful, user‑driven improvement that shows they’re paying attention to real‑world feedback. At the same time, it’s hard not to ask why a change this sensible took so long to arrive. Regardless, it’s a welcome refinement and a step in the right direction.
Canon announced a lot of new accessories for the entire EOS R line-up along with the EOS R6 V and RF 20-50mm f/4L IS USM PZ. They gave us a new remote and tripod grip. Canon also announced a new macro speedlite adapter for the MT-26EX-R Macro Twin Lite, which adds compatibility with more RF […]

Canon Officially Announces the EOS R6 V

...years ago I purchased a second M62...and a year or so ago I purchased a spare EF-M 11-22.

I use them all the time.

I still don't understand why Canon...oh never mind.

May I ask...how did your 11-22 fail?
Just the lens error message when attached, not associated with a fall or anything, I think it’s probably some internal wiring worn out. I’ve replaced a cracked mount on my 18-150, that was easy and has lasted 3 years, but my understanding is that the lens error on the 11-22 is hard/impossible to fix. I bought a spare m200 to keep the lenses going in case the M6ii died, and that’s now my daughter’s camera, but the M6 keeps chugging, never take out the battery because the internal one has died, but otherwise still a source of delight.

Sony ups the ante with the A7RVI and FE 100-400mm f/4.5 GM OSS

Maybe, the main difference is the rolling shutter speed: 19.6ms versus 3.8ms for the A1 II (versus 6.3ms for the R5 Mk II).
Thank you, I actually did not check all of the technical data. I still think that it is a very capable camera. For DGO and the better dynamic range you have to use the mechanical shutter anyway.
For me personally the 67MP would be too much (beside the price 😅).

Canon EOS R1 & R5 Mark II Firmware v1.3.0 Arriving Soon

One button toggle on and off of precapture is great, must admit that I thought that they would never do it, so really great that they actually did it, thanks Canon….

One major flaw with the programming of the camera that still remain, and which I don’t see anyone else talking about, is that in Av (and P) mode(s), You for some odd reason can’t get a faster shutterspeed than 1/8000th, and with f/1.2 in bright sunshine and a white swan or dress, thát is not going to cut it, so one have to change to M mode, but setting for instance 1/12.800th of a second there, if a cloud cover the sun for a moment, and one for some reason doesn’t adjust, or if there suddenly is a shot in the shade to be caught, the AutoISO may end up at 1600 or something, and on a bright sunny day, thát is simply stupid....

- Particularly considering that while noise is no major problem at ISO 1600, the number of tones from black to white will be reduced, and thát doesn’t help with the ability to recover details in the highlights, if allowing faster shutterspeeds in Av (and P), thát would be no problem whatsoever, You just stay in Av and shoot whatever You see….

It could also be at a concert, where the scene all of a sudden explode in bright light, in both Av and M there will be a whole lot of adjusting that need to be done, very quickly, so thát image is basically impossible to catch.

- Any way, if the problem is that in faster shutterspeeds than 1/16.000th, the shutter change in whole stops, then AutoISO can fix thát without ever getting past ISO 200….

Go to Fv mode then, people have said, but
I have been in Av since I bought my first Canon, the Eos 620, back in the ’80s, and really prefer to stay there, together with exposure compensation on the rear wheel, and now AutoISO, You have complete control over the camera, in very simple steps….

Sony ups the ante with the A7RVI and FE 100-400mm f/4.5 GM OSS

Sorry Pieter, I posted similarly before yours had come up on my screen. Wegener's tests showed that while tracking was very good, acquisition of AF for birds against a background wasn't fast. So, I think Sony has caught up in some ways with the R5 for us birders, but is behind the R5ii because of rolling shutter and poorer recognition, and the details fall off at higher iso whereas the R5ii works better in lower light. I am still amazed by the fast AF acquisition of the R5ii.
Hi Alan, no problem, you applied some wishful thinking by increasing the speed by a factor 1000. Let’s hope Canon takes notice for the R5 Mk III and R1 Mk II ;).

The new rear lens cap is the real story today!
Do I understand correctly: this new lens cap lets you attach the cap in three different positions? It would be quite helpful because I do swap lenses a lot. My wife absolutely hates the current lens caps (she often has to put on for me when I swap lenses) and in hectic situations or dark places it would be quite helpful.

Is it possible for them to apply the same concept to a telephoto zoom? I sure it is possible!
I was wondering about the same thing. We don´t need another 70-200mm F4 offering, so maybe Canon could do something like a 50-135mm F4 L PZ. I really don´t know anything about the technical part of designing such a lens, I just thinking about useful focal lengths in a (hopefully) small size.

Show your Bird Portraits

Well, you are right!
You are a member of a small esteemed group who will cheerfully admit not to being right. The other practice is to double down by either moving the goal posts like "the branch it is perched on is not..." or just deny "it's actually an Inner Mongolian Little Brown Job as you should know from the part of the claw that is hidden round the back which ChatGPT can't see".
