Venus Optics announces the Laowa Argus 35mm f/0.95 for full-frame cameras, including the RF mount

??? Canon had a 50/0.95 for its rangefinders for like 20 years at that point, and 50/0.7's existed even if in small numbers.
I was talking about an SLR mount. Funnily enough, I used to have a 50mm .95 range finder lens for a while...a long time ago. My point was...if Canon wanted to release new exciting glass...they did it before with the EF mount and the 50mm f1.2...why couldn't Canon do the same for the RF mount? Why not a rf 35mm f1.0? Even expanding the f1.2 range would be a revolution.

TCs on the 100-400mm II

Thanks, Alan. She likes birding but only has an R and now that you've got me thinking in this direction I started checking reviews. This one claims AF is a pain with the R but I think that's more of an indictment of the R vs. R5.

Yes, it’s the R. The 100-500mm has turgid AF on the R according to some reliable reviewers but stellar on the R5 and 6.

More than just the Canon EOS R5C will be announced on January 19, 2022

That is like saying that if Angénieux bundled the Ronin 3D focus system with their lenses they were now making auto focus lenses. Ya, OK, sure. But that is one heck of a stretching of what an autofocus lens is.
The servo's are just in different places... "AF" lenses aren't making the decisions all by themselves. The camera is and then sending signals to drive the servos to move the lens elements into the proper position. We've had similar discussions on professional boards many times. Pretty much any lens could be turned into an "AF lens" if a manufacturer decided to implement it in their cameras. Yes, there is a little more to it than just saying it, but at its most base, they just have to interface it with external servos that will drive the lens.

R3: Share Tips, Setup and Issues Here

This is an awesome thread, and you guys are simply wonderful for sharing your knowledge and best practices! As some of you may know, I've been having a devil of a time trying to get my R3 to focus on a wide variety of things.

As it turns out, how we work with lines and contrast appears to matter a lot more in our R3s than I ever consciously noticed during my 1Dx years.

The following video was recently sent to me as an FYI to help with my focusing. Putting aside all the sensor talk on the pros and cons of different designs, the tip that Tony shares at the 2 minute and 20 second mark in his video is significantly helping me to attain focus. The tip to help with focusing: "just tilt the camera a little bit". That is most certainly something I never, ever, did with my 1Dx to put things into focus, but I now find myself needing to do it often with my R3.

Case in point, I just tried to photograph my diploma hanging on the wall. When my camera is horizontal, I simply cannot get my diploma to focus - using any number of focus activation techniques or button approaches. Yet, when I tipped my camera a bit, voila, it work. That's just nuts. Hope this helps you as much as it helped me. Are you guys doing camera tilts in your work to focus things?

Can Canonrumors stop posting body stock notices for Canon USA???

This statement is not true when using a debit card. Yes, technically, they don't actually remove the money, but the bank puts a hold on the full amount so I cannot access it...
Of course if you are a richperson then it probably doesn't matter if they put a hold on the money.

I do not understand though why anyone uses a debit card for online purchases. It seems fraught with peril to me. It's one thing to have a charge card number pilfered, but that usually results in a minor inconvenience (Calling the bank and notifying them so they can issue a new card and cancel the charges), but with a debit card it can totally screw up your checking account for weeks, plus you lose access to the card for local purchases while everything gets straightened out. Not a risk I want to take.

New Canon EOS R3 orders may take up to 6 months to fulfill

I just received my R3 a few days ago... I have a HUGE suggestion, and how I got mine.

Find a small camera store. In a town, and call them... even if you have to drive a few hours outside of wherever you live.

I said I wanted one, and they were able to get it in my hands in like a week and a half.

I was shocked, when I ordered it, I told them I just forgot about it because figured it wouldn't be in my hands for 6 months an they said, well since we are small we can get one in and not necessarily sell it right away because in smaller towns, more expensive cameras, stick on th shelves for longer

Focussing problems with the RF 100mm macro lens.

Confirm that you don't experience the back focus with the lens at f/2.8. If you do, it is likely a malfunctioning lens. The focus shift that is part of the optical design occurs only when you stop down, and generally only at macro distances. Your reference to back focused portraits makes me wonder if you simply have a bad copy of the RF 100L Macro.
I confirm that I don't experience focus shift at f/2.8. And for the portrait remark take a look at the Dustin Abbot review when he talks of the picture he took of his cat...I experienced the same problem of focus shift at f/5.6.

Chris Frost's review of RF 100mm Macro.

I will buy one soon or later. I need the higher mag and like the SA control. Chris Frost mentioned the shift would be small at macro distance (5:40) and it won't be "terrible an issue" ( free quoted @7:20).

At the moment I use a Sigma 105 macro and the RF100 will be probably better.
If I would own a EF 100, I maybe won't buy one.
Do yourself a favor and buy the EF lens! The focus shift is more severe than you think. I own both lenses and can assure you that it is a bad lens...

R5 silicon cover and battery grip

I myself have not found the heat issue ? Maybe its the colder climate
I don't have it either, I just take stills and not at high speeds. However, overheating is easily reproducible if you push the camera to record high data rates to the CF Express card over a period of time. Just doing stills is not an issue, its high rate video that generates the heat faster than it can dissipate. If the camera is insulated, heat escapes much more slowly, so that may change .

R5 w/ RF24-70 f2.8 has IBIS wobble @ 24mm?

I But I’m confused because people say the RF15-35 has wobble when it’s at 15, you have to zoom in a little bit to get rid if it. But the 24-70 already zoomed in more than 15.
Presumably the issue is occurring at the wide end of the zoom range for that lens, not at some specific focal length(s).

Naïve question, is this only with video? I don’t notice anything odd with my R3 and RF 14-35/4, but I don’t shoot video on ILCs.

Hesitating on this R5 Purchase..

[..]I guess I have two questions for you all. After all the recent firmware updates on the R5, how long do your R5 cameras last before overheating in 4K HQ? Can you still capture stills when they do overheat, or is the camera rendered useless until it cools down?[..]
Still capture is completely unaffected by video (over)heating. During summer I tried to film dragonflies at 120fps (complete failure, not due to gear) and got the overheat warning, switching to stills let me do 20fps photos till I overheated myself and had to find some shade :)

Has the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens been discontinued?

Thanks for the replies all, yes I’ve looked at MPB and their used lenses. Although, I am inclined to buy a new one as I do not plan to buy another one in the foreseeable future. This lens will be ideal for my dental photography.

Does anyone know if this lens will come back in stock or a new version released soon?

Thanks

I don't think the lens has been manufactured for a while and it looks like they've sold off the remaining stock given the number of weeks it has been out of stock at most places. I doubt they will be making more given the new RF macro options.

Refurbished lenses are occasionally available on the Canon USA web site - the last one was a week ago. This is likely as close to new as you will get. You might set up a notifcation on Canon Price Watch if you want to go that route. https://www.cpricewatch.com/product/00003/Canon-EF-100mm-f2.8-Macro-USM-price.html

If you are shooting with an R series body, you might consider the RF 85mm F2 Macros IS STM since it is a bit cheaper. It is only 1:2 reproduction. You'll need to use the EF or RF 100L if you want 1:1.
