glad to see this AF problem on R5 + 500mm f4, is known by others, i was beginning to think my lens was faulty.
I preordered one of those just to keep an extra UWA on hand. I also hope they don’t wait too long to profile it.Well it took them a year to get the RF 50mm profile into LR, it was added in with this last update. Lets pray it doesn't take that long for the 16 2.8. I know MANY people holding off on that lens now because of no profiles for it. We bought 4 of them to use with our RE training kits but 3 of them are being sent back as they are unusable as they are.
Yes, this reflects performance similar to my extensive use with the EF 100-400 II and the Canon adaptor. There will be an occasional "vibration" as I like to call it where the camera just goes berserk for a short period. It will then settle down and work just fine after and never do it again for that weekend or sometimes later on in the same day. I have no confidence that Canon intends to fix this because they can't recreate it when I've mailed my camera in...it's just something that happens randomly out of the blue but almost always at 400mm.I've just come back from a days shooting, mostly video, with my R5 and Canon EF 100-400mm II L lens with the Canon EF-RF adapter (the plain one).
I've had a really odd thing happening when in video mode and having IBIS on (Camera(7)->IS (Image stabilizer) mode ->Digital IS->on, not enhanced), the LCD panel preview (but not the physical camera/lens itself - this was on a tripod!) was jumping up and down violently and the image shown seemed to lag as well - so when moving the camera I was getting both shaking and ghosting of images that should have been only on the screen a few seconds earlier. I'm not talking about a little shake here, but violent - perhaps up to 1/2 of the field of view, and at the refresh rate of the LCD panel. This was only in the preview mode mind, so starting to record seemed to calm the camera to the point that it was useable, but of course it was impossible to frame and preview what I was going to shoot. Setting stabilization->off seemed to prevent this happening, which is why I presume its IBIS related, even though I can't reconcile the ghosting as being a simple IBIS issue.
This is only in video mode - nothing odd was seen in photo mode at all. I got home and checked this wasn't a lens issue by putting my 24-105 RF lens on the body and the shaking in the viewfinder was still present. I was resigned to getting a repair done, but then I looked for a 'reset' function on the camera and found one in the menu system under wrench(5)->reset camera->basic settings, so I ran that and the problem seems to have gone away - hopefully for good!
Bizarre, or what! Anyone seen anything similar?!
During the DRone Wars here on CR, the SoNikon pushers could not wrap their heads around the fact that not everyone shoots at base ISO. When you need high shutter speeds (shorter than 1/2000 s) at relatively narrower apertures (e.g. 600/4 with a TC), the ISO needs to be fairly high. But, the crucial point, which I was pointing out, is that the difference in DR disappears above about iso 200-400, and most of the posters don't know that.
What/who is CPW, please?
Thanks for sharing your discoveries and impressions on this lens.As it seems to be the trend these days with Canon, a budget lens has been released where distortion correction can't be disabled in camera and is forced on. ...
I what way? I don't exposure bracket unless I am going to be doing blending and that type of stuff isn't high volume. But you can very quickly scan through lots of bracketed images to select the optimal single exposure or choice of two or so exposures you want to then blend. Is it useful for exposure bracketting?
And then we all stared/ lusted after the Nikkor 43-86 back in the day.And before the 28-70 came out, we were fine with 35-70. Later I went for the 35-105 instead of the 28-85. (I may be dating myself somewhat...)
I noticed pergear is carrying the blower and hopefully their delivery time won't be as bad as Aliexpress. I would like to see review of lens heater as it certainly looks promising for working during monsoon season here along Western ghats.Certainly interesting in cold or humid environments...
And the blower delivering filtered air unlike a Rocket blower...I will test it!
Hi, John.Hi Joe,
Yes your observations make sense. Having a AF that is sticker than the R5 will be beneficial to me so thank you for sharing. I have gone on workshops with Chaz in the past and hope to go again in 2022 if the Covid pandemic continues to lessen its grip.
This is an excellent and very sensible post. It would be costly to switch and that would make it out of the question. I have three lenses with IS and love it and I agree that IBIS would not be all that necessary. I have thought of a 5DIV and and if I need a body quickly, that would possibly be the wisest and most economical quick fix. Thanks again for your excellent response.
He has just posted another thread in which he says it won't replace his R5.Didn't you read on this forum that the R3 was totally useless for wildlife?
Great pictures!
Yeah, let's see what the market thinks of that in a year or two.The LiDAR follow focus waveform (actually the proper term should be point clouds here, for LiDAR terms) alone is revolutionary. There isn't a single competing solution out there that offers this level of convenience and certainty. The best part of this camera is, there are so many other good features in this camera, even this LiDAR renovation itself is no longer the biggest advantage people are excited about.
If you are a run and gun operator, the ability to integrate everything into such a small package with minimal moving parts is huge. You could save hours of rigging, prepping and packing in a day, and all the hustle related to these big packages are gone. For a crew, the greatly improved mobility and rigging options (on booms, vehicles and other scenarios with the benefits of the built-in z-axis) is also huge. It's a true game-changer, not just a camera + a gimbal. Not mentioning the price, and the possibility to quickly swap the camera to an inspire 3 drone. The only few awkwardness about this camera are stationary and truck shots, and the lens compatibility issue, of course.
