Canon 500mm f4 mk1 owners , with R camera...

hello,
i've a Canon 500mm f4 mk1 and having some AF issue,
AF is perfect till it is not and become heratic for some periode and all of a sudden AF is back for no reason as i do not do any change.
It's just like if the lens need some "rest"...(???)
the lens seems working great, the camera R5 too, it's just the combo .
So i would like to know if some owners of the 500mm f4 mk1 experiment some issue , or not, and may be , what's your best setting with this lens on the R5 or R6?
thank you ;)

Canon G550 review (and G650/620 etc) ...yes it can work well ;-)

I've just published my detailed review of the Canon G550 (this also applies to the print capabilities of the models with scanners)

https://www.northlight-images.co.uk/canon-g550-printer-review/

Very much aimed at seeing what I could get from this little printer despite the enforced use of AirPrint driver on the Mac

So, whilst I have a big set of profiles available - they cannot be used on Windows systems, since they are effectively profiling the AirPrint-driver/media-setting as a black box.

However... it's capable of making nice looking prints and as a 'tank' type printer is very cheap to run and get into printing your work.

Problem with AF with R5 and EF 500mm f4 mk1 and converters...

glad to see this AF problem on R5 + 500mm f4, is known by others, i was beginning to think my lens was faulty.
but sad for the owners too, because it's very frustrating...

New ACR and LR lens profiles

Well it took them a year to get the RF 50mm profile into LR, it was added in with this last update. Lets pray it doesn't take that long for the 16 2.8. I know MANY people holding off on that lens now because of no profiles for it. We bought 4 of them to use with our RE training kits but 3 of them are being sent back as they are unusable as they are.
I preordered one of those just to keep an extra UWA on hand. I also hope they don’t wait too long to profile it.

Canon R5 owners... how has your experience with IBIS been? Works great with all my lenses except one

I've just come back from a days shooting, mostly video, with my R5 and Canon EF 100-400mm II L lens with the Canon EF-RF adapter (the plain one).

I've had a really odd thing happening when in video mode and having IBIS on (Camera(7)->IS (Image stabilizer) mode ->Digital IS->on, not enhanced), the LCD panel preview (but not the physical camera/lens itself - this was on a tripod!) was jumping up and down violently and the image shown seemed to lag as well - so when moving the camera I was getting both shaking and ghosting of images that should have been only on the screen a few seconds earlier. I'm not talking about a little shake here, but violent - perhaps up to 1/2 of the field of view, and at the refresh rate of the LCD panel. This was only in the preview mode mind, so starting to record seemed to calm the camera to the point that it was useable, but of course it was impossible to frame and preview what I was going to shoot. Setting stabilization->off seemed to prevent this happening, which is why I presume its IBIS related, even though I can't reconcile the ghosting as being a simple IBIS issue.

This is only in video mode - nothing odd was seen in photo mode at all. I got home and checked this wasn't a lens issue by putting my 24-105 RF lens on the body and the shaking in the viewfinder was still present. I was resigned to getting a repair done, but then I looked for a 'reset' function on the camera and found one in the menu system under wrench(5)->reset camera->basic settings, so I ran that and the problem seems to have gone away - hopefully for good!

Bizarre, or what! Anyone seen anything similar?!
Yes, this reflects performance similar to my extensive use with the EF 100-400 II and the Canon adaptor. There will be an occasional "vibration" as I like to call it where the camera just goes berserk for a short period. It will then settle down and work just fine after and never do it again for that weekend or sometimes later on in the same day. I have no confidence that Canon intends to fix this because they can't recreate it when I've mailed my camera in...it's just something that happens randomly out of the blue but almost always at 400mm.

The-Digital-Picture posts Canon R3 ISO noise results

But, the crucial point, which I was pointing out, is that the difference in DR disappears above about iso 200-400, and most of the posters don't know that.
During the DRone Wars here on CR, the SoNikon pushers could not wrap their heads around the fact that not everyone shoots at base ISO. When you need high shutter speeds (shorter than 1/2000 s) at relatively narrower apertures (e.g. 600/4 with a TC), the ISO needs to be fairly high.

Switching to R System. Which EF Lenses will you sell or keep?

I made the switch to the R system over the past couple of years and in the process of doing that I ended up selling / trading-in all of my EF glass and purchased RF equivalents. I would do the same in your case as funds allow. Of course, generally speaking I would keep any EF lens that do not exist in the RF range until RF versions are announced. Lastly, if you have some EF lens that do not take front filters (EF 11-24 mm f4) you can buy the EF to R adapter that takes filters and use that combo. Good luck.

Behind The Shot interviews Jeff Cable, to talk about using the EOS R3 in the real world

Is it useful for exposure bracketting?
I what way? I don't exposure bracket unless I am going to be doing blending and that type of stuff isn't high volume. But you can very quickly scan through lots of bracketed images to select the optimal single exposure or choice of two or so exposures you want to then blend.

It's real strengths are the import speed and the speed that you can scroll through thousands of images and rate, keyword and caption images.

Nitecore's Camera cleaning products and lens heater.

Certainly interesting in cold or humid environments...
And the blower delivering filtered air unlike a Rocket blower...I will test it!
I noticed pergear is carrying the blower and hopefully their delivery time won't be as bad as Aliexpress. I would like to see review of lens heater as it certainly looks promising for working during monsoon season here along Western ghats.

Wildlife with the R3

Hi Joe,

Yes your observations make sense. Having a AF that is sticker than the R5 will be beneficial to me so thank you for sharing. I have gone on workshops with Chaz in the past and hope to go again in 2022 if the Covid pandemic continues to lessen its grip.
Hi, John.
I’m leading some workshops for Chas so maybe our paths will cross in the future.

Really obscure and silly question about Canon LH-D12 lens case.

I have one of these that I bought in a Canon package with the lens so I know exactly what (strange) way things fit together.
The hole in the lid is not supposed to be filled up- that's where the rear lens cap goes.
The sun shade is put in after the lens is in place but oddly it goes opening downwards but at that point it's sitting over the back of the lens.
There are two felt pad thingies that are the red color on one side and black on the other that serve as spacers between the back of the lens and the sun shade.
There's really no need for them.
It may be that someone cannibalized one of these pads to get some red material to join with the gray foam for whatever reason- probably because someone was trying to use the case for a shorter lens the case was not intended for.

The Canon EOS R system turns 3 and Lensrentals.com gives us a breakdown of its progression

This is an excellent and very sensible post. It would be costly to switch and that would make it out of the question. I have three lenses with IS and love it and I agree that IBIS would not be all that necessary. I have thought of a 5DIV and and if I need a body quickly, that would possibly be the wisest and most economical quick fix. Thanks again for your excellent response.

Also a former 6D user that moved to the 1DXII at introduction so I could shoot sports and BIF as well. Both of my 6Ds are still going strong as loaners. Given limited funds, I'd stick with the 6D as long as it was meeting my needs. When it breaks, you can decide your next step and save in the meantime. The 5DIV will be there and the R series will keep improving.

I find R6 is sufficient for my current needs (adapted EF and RF800/RF100-400/RF1.4x) so I'm not rushing off to get an R5 or R3. I can wait to see what other bodies are on the horizon. I will say that I much prefer the R6 to the 6D for my use, even with just EF glass.

A few Elk with the R3

Didn't you read on this forum that the R3 was totally useless for wildlife?:ROFLMAO:
Great pictures!
He has just posted another thread in which he says it won't replace his R5.

Industry News: DJI Revolutionizes Filmmaking With World’s First 4-Axis Cinema Camera

The LiDAR follow focus waveform (actually the proper term should be point clouds here, for LiDAR terms) alone is revolutionary. There isn't a single competing solution out there that offers this level of convenience and certainty. The best part of this camera is, there are so many other good features in this camera, even this LiDAR renovation itself is no longer the biggest advantage people are excited about.

If you are a run and gun operator, the ability to integrate everything into such a small package with minimal moving parts is huge. You could save hours of rigging, prepping and packing in a day, and all the hustle related to these big packages are gone. For a crew, the greatly improved mobility and rigging options (on booms, vehicles and other scenarios with the benefits of the built-in z-axis) is also huge. It's a true game-changer, not just a camera + a gimbal. Not mentioning the price, and the possibility to quickly swap the camera to an inspire 3 drone. The only few awkwardness about this camera are stationary and truck shots, and the lens compatibility issue, of course.
Yeah, let's see what the market thinks of that in a year or two. :)
