There is no standard way of measuring dynamic range but it seems pretty easy in theory.
Just have a scene with a wide range of T-stops.
(I have no idea why so many test with F-stops)
There is testing equipment that goes up to 20 stops but the stops in the test have to line up with the stops in the camera which if you knew you would not need to do the test.
Next, the dynamic range of the lens has to match.
There is no true dynamic range test though there are so many people who claim that they know the true dynamic range and all of the camera companies are lying.

I followed this up with the Nikon 105mm DC lens that has the same ability to adjust spherical aberration. It’s helpful in portraiture when you stop down because of the narrow range of DoF. I still can’t see the benefit in Macro shooting. To Canon’s credit, the EF 100mm macro likely sold more copies for portrait work than macro work with it’s cheap complaint being harsh bokeh stopped down. At least portrait shooters have an expensive tool to add to their bag.

While this lens was cool in some ways (can put it in a shirt pocket), I never used it due to other better lenses available that were close in focal length and also small - ie 35mm f/2 IS & 50mm f/1.8 STM. Thus it was more of a novelty

So, if you can afford it, get a R5 and keep using your existing lenses until you see a need to replace them. A future quad pixel sensor will bring another boost to AF capability.

I got my RF to EF adapter yesterday. Will try out my current L-collection this week. Particularly interested in my 100mm f/2.8 L macro. I've used it on my 5D IV for a year or two and it's just amazing on that 30 MP sensor. Can't wait to check it out with my R5.

True. I have a 512 GB CF express (think it's Sandisk, not sure) and it only works when saving to that, not with my Sony Though 256GB UHS II.

My camera stays in Airplane mode. Solves a lot of issues and I don't see why the majority of shooters on here couldn't leave it in that mode.

Yes, that's exaxtly what I did. Had a bit of a session the other day since that happened and it did'nt happen again once. How is that 100-500 working out? Iv'e been using a Sigma 100-400 and it actually manages reasonably well, i'd imagine the 100-500 rf performs significantly better...

When I bought my 6D2 there was a choice of 24–105mm lenses in the kit. In both cases, the the kit prices was the body price plus the lens price.

TBH I would take a closer look at the 100-400L II:

not so much bigger - OTOH I checked the data: 130% size, 160% weight

100 mm more reach (if needed, e.g. wildlife)

the 70-300mm is too much overlap to the 70-200
Ony some weight and size advantage

Yeh the thing is I don't really do birds, and the extra size and weight is kinda a big deal. (really only reason i want the 70-300 is something a little easier to carry than the 70-200 f/2.8). I owned it once before, and it was a nice savings in size/weight from the 70-200. Not game changing like the 70-300 DO, but enough that it was just a bit less cumbersome. TBH I would probably miss 70mm more than I'd miss 400mm.

If I was going to carry something the size of the 100-400L II, I would carry the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II based on what i normally shoot

Also apparently the 70-300L is out of production so I better get to ordering it!

thank you for your answers, i've checked and it's ok.
but sometimes the combo works great sometimes , not at all, impossible to focus.
the last time it did, was just after a short video, 1 or 2 s, i quickly switch to photo (before any AF on subject in video mode) to shot bird, but impossible to focus in photo mode.
so i quickly switch back to video mode (to check AF), focused on a subject, and went back to photo, and then, AF was ok.
is it possible that if i switch from video to photo, when i do not focus on anything in video, the AF is kind of "lost" in photo?

I still haven’t upgraded to firmware 1.3 on my R5 (still on 1.2). But since your post I have stopped using my 512gb Sandisk CF Express Card and reverted to a Sandisk 128gb UHS-I card. So far nearly 3000 frames taken over 3 photo shoots and no lockups yet. If it makes it to 5000+ frames without a lockup with the SD card I will strongly suspect the CF Express card was causing the problem. With the CF Express I was getting a lockup roughly once every 2000 frames. So let’s see what happens... I’ll give it a few more weeks and then upgrade to 1.3 to test out the CF express card again. Fingers crossed

I guess so, check out if their time zone is the same as yours. Once I called them when they haven't even started working. If your issue can be solved somewhere else than better go and fix it by yourself. I have reached them via phone but they could not help me. Instead, I searched for it support sydney, and surprisingly they helped me out. If you think that they are the only ones who can help you, then of course try to get in touch with them asap. Otherwise try to find another solution. Best of luck!

That's exactly the results of todays shooting session. I had it @f/7.1 and focus distance far far away. No issue irl.

Please, anybody can send me several full-size images taken with Canon EF85mm f/1.8 USM wide opened on Canon EOS 5DS/5DS R? At F1.8 or F2, JPEG or RAW.

My camera body is EOS 5DS R. I am looking for a 85mm portrait lens to hand over my 100L Macro. But it must be not too expensive because I do not want to invesgate too much on DSLR. I am on my way to Canon RF mount.

I studied the cheap but ancient EF85mm f/1.8 USM and want to check the wide opened performance on the EOS 5DS/5DS R. My other handy Canon EF lenses: 24L II, 35L II, 100L Macro.
