Canon EOS R3 hands on

Thanks, but apparently you missed the main site post and growing forum thread on this.

6D vs. R6 vs. M50

Depends on what you mean with stationary video. The 6D is severely lacking in AF compared to those other bodies. Especially the R6 will beat it hands down. If your video and stills subjects are handled fine even by the basic 11 point OVF, contrast AF LiveView AF, than sticking with what you have is an option.

Depending on your audience and / or how much you would like cropping your video (punch in and so on), 4K might be a complete waste or a mighty upgrade. With the R6 beating the M50 in this regard, both with quality and AF.

You've told us to little to judge what you need, on which ways you would benefit and what you even value in a camera.
Thanks. I think I'm gonna stick with what I have. I video myself mostly in one spot so with any movement I can just increase the DOF as needed. Probably R6-bound, but will hold off and just keep maxing out my 6D for awhile.

Canon is #1 in global market share for digital cameras in 2020, and their share grew

Digital camera market share in 2020 by manufacturer

  1. Canon 47.9% (+2.5%)
  2. Sony 22.1% (+1.9%)
  3. Nikon 13.7% (-4.9%)
  4. Fujifilm 5.6% (-0.3%)
  5. Panasonic 4.4% (-0.3%)

Let's turn that input relative numbers:
1. Canon 45.4% -> 47.9% = +5.5%
2. Sony 20.2% -> 22.1% = +9.4%
3. Nikon 18.6% -> 13.7% = -26.3%
4. Fujifilm 5.9% -> 5.6% = -5.1%
5. Panasonic 4.7% -> 4.4% = -6.4%

That's gotta hurt a lot at Nikon.

Canon U.S.A., Inc. Focuses on Consumer Safety with an Anti-Counterfeit Consumer Education Microsite Update

Again, the point is counterfeit products. As in, someone bought a AA battery that looked exactly like a Duracell, but was actually made by Charlie's Cheap Coppertops using contaminated materials, and that battery exploded.
Still safer than a Samsung battery.

R5 tilted screen issue

Other two copies I've had a chance to check had no similar movement. Neither my R6. Can't show it on video or add pictures of my camera as it is currently at the authorized repair shop.
Well if it’s in for repair that’s your question answered! If it‘s different to others it warrants a technicians look, I was surprised at how complicated the hinge mechanism is so there is a lot in there to go wrong.

Optical Limits makes interesting comments about 3rd party RF lenses in reviewing Samyang / Rokinon AF 14mm f/2.8 RF

"As of the time of this review, Samyang has been the only third-party manufacturer offering AF lenses in Canon RF mount - namely the Samyang (Rokinon) AF 14mm f/2.8 RF & AF 85mm f/1/4 RF ... but their status is unclear. Canon R-mount is a closed ecosystem with Canon obviously not willing to issue mount/protocol licenses. But it seems as if there's even more to it. Samyang appears to have reverse-engineered the protocol but, at least according to messages on social media, they are about to stop manufacturing AF lenses for R-mount (because Canon threatened them?). The future of these lenses is therefore foggy at best. However, you can still buy the AF 14mm f/2.8 RF for as little as 650USD/EUR making it an attractive alternative to the superb but expensive, native Canon RF lenses. The lens is also available in Sony E-mount using the same optical formula - with Sony's blessing apparently."

By the way, reverse engineering is not illegal and a perfectly valid way of not infringing intellectual property.
For whatever it may be worth, the RF 85mm f/1.4 AF seems to be gone from the Samyang website but it is still on the Rokinon website:

I really do hope the lens remains available, whatevr brand name it sells under.

Lensbaby announces the Obscura pinhole lens system for the RF mount

You can make your own ‘pinhole’ lens for $5 max. Take a body cap, drill a hole in it in the center, cover the hole with foil tape then stick a pin in it. Done.

If you want a different focal length then use extension tubes with it.

if you want it to be sharper make one with a smaller hole but you are going to have to make your exposure longer.

Laowa 100mm f2.8 2X Macro APO for RF

Thanks dcm. One thing I am bummed about is the target reticle that you can use to nail the focus which is not available for manual lenses it seems? I am using focus peaking to nail focus.
I find magnification helps fine tune what I get in focus peaking. A 5X/10X loupe on the EVF is quite useful. You just can't be in face+tracking mode even though you are in manual focus mode.

Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L IS Mentioned [CR1]

The Nikon 500mm f/5.6 weighs 1460g (51.5 oz), which is only 210g (7.4oz) more than the 400mm f/5.6. My Nikon with the 500mm f/5.6 weighs the same as my R5 with the R5100-500mm, slightly less than the R5 with the 100-400mm II + adapter. Technology has moved on since that 400mm f/5.6 L.
My whole upgrade thing started because of this 500mm f/5.6 pf lens from Nikon. I was ready to sell all my gear and get a D500 + 500mm 5.6 pf, but I decided to check if moving from my 7D II to the R5 wouldn't be a better choice.

Imagine what Canon could do with that price point on a 500mm f/5.6 prime!

RF 100mm Macro L - Anyone's shipped yet?

We're talking about the Laowa RF 100mm f2.8 2x (as a cheaper but less featured alternative to the RF 100mm), which has been around (in different mounts) since the beginning of last year. ;)
My mistake, however the meaningful part of my comment holds true. Adobe provide everything needed, along with a community depository, for custom lens profiles.

Multiple mentions put the Canon EOS R3 sensor resolution “around 24mp”

BTW, if those 24MP images by Al Bello, Getty staff photog, are indeed taken with the R3, then you can really see him putting the 30 fps stacked sensor to work. Great images, truly freezing moments in time with those swimmers.

Bello is a good fotog for sure, but Nick Didlick is actually producing more images of note than Al is.
Nick is a Sony ambassador now, so that won't help much with camera data, but as fotogs go, Nick is a bigger sports power house and has been for decades.

Is it T Stops not F Stops we should care about?

While I agree with PBD that you would expect a $12k lens to be better than a $900 one, and with camera gear (and many other things) often you do get what you pay for, there is no guarantee things will be as you expect so never a bad thing to check if you can (you know what they say about assumption!). And in any event still useful (at least for me) to hear about someone's attempt to directly compare lenses in practical terms (as against differences in specs / theoretical performance). Thanks for posting.
100% I still found it a very interesting test and appreciate the post by MonsMeg.

Some people care about the last 10-20% performance gains even if it results in a 10x higher cost. Spend some time in the world of high end audio it is very common for people to spend a crazy amount of money for less than a 10% difference in sound quality… It’s the same with cameras a lot of the time

What gear to bring for Banff/Jasper with EF and RF mixed systems?

After using the 28-70 for a week, I think I will keep looking for a lighter travel lens or continue to use the 24-105.

I had the 28-70/2 for a short time but I had to come to terms with how often I was actually going to use it. I ended up going with the 24-70/2.8 instead.

A new Canon ILC appears for certification, but we already know what it is

Rhey
How do you know what Canon intends for the R3? Rarely do companies specifically identify their competition. However, the evidence of competition is clear. The cameras absolutely are in the same class. Given the similar specs--sports/action cameras with stacked sensors, 30fps burst rates, and blazing fast AF tracking differing significantly only in body style and resolution--the cameras are undoubtedly competitors. Moreover, until Canon releases a model superior to the R3--my money is on late 2022 at the earliest and more likely late 2023 or 2024--the R3 will be Canon's flagship.

And I have no idea how well it measures up to the Sony A1 (and neither do you unless you have early access; in which case, lucky you!). Thus, as stated, there is much I want to know about how well the R3 stacks up to competitors Sony A1 and Nikon Z9.
Well they have stated already that the R3 holds a place between the R5 and 1DX3. So that's how Canon sees it and I have no reason to doubt their vision. At 24mpx, it's not even close to being on par with the A1..

Sony officially announces the vlogging focused ZV-E10

It has much better quality than a webcam for going live and doesn't need a capture card to do so (though, any Canon with clean HDMI can do the same thing, albeit this one seems to do it a bit better
HDMI requires a capture card but USB doesn't.

I've also heard the product mode of the ZV1 is really good at it's job and that's in this one too.
Product Showcase Mode is kind of a gimmick but it does make sense for beginners.
It is nothing more than autofocus with face-detect turned off.

I'd recommend this for someone who wants a blogging/vlogging camera and doesn't care about a viewfinder.
ZV-E10 has terrible rolling shutter.
It would be fine as a studio camera but so would ZV1.
I would not recommend walking with the ZV-E10 because of the rolling-shutter jello artifacts and the screen is not bright enough.
ZV-E10 does not cost much different than ZV-E1 so I would probably recommend the ZV-E10 with a wider lens than the kit lens.
I still would not recommend either over the M50 or M6 II but I do think it was smart for Sony to design and market cameras directly marketed at vloggers.
Canon has vlogging and creator bundles which people can just pick up from Costco or Walmart without a second thought.
