Did Canon Miss the Boat on Flash Systems?

I dread the moment my MT24-EX stops working, I don't want to spend €900 for the MT26 nor do I want the godox variant with non-replaceable batteries. I love my EL-5, but it really wish it could be charged over USB-C!
I feel the same way about my MR14-EX. I also don't like the small hole on both that prevents wide apertures, nor that the MR14-EX flashes aren't facing inward enough for close subjects on even a 100mm macro. I'm waiting until I get near a larger city to have a look at the Nissin MF-18--not a brand I would normally be seeking out, but I do want to compare it side-by-side with the Canon as some folks think it is better. I'll probably look at the Godox products as well. I still get plenty of use out of my ring flash, so I want to be prepared for the worst and perhaps upgrade sooner if I find something better.

Canon RF 85mm f/1.4L VCM on the Way

Is anyone replacing their 85 1.2 or using it in conjunction with the 1.2? Part of me wishes this would've came out before the 1.2 so I'd have a smaller set of travel primes.
Are you asking 'cause you might want to get a 85 1.2 from one of us that wants to part with ours? Or else maybe you're considering parting with yours? Just askin'

Canon to add RF Wide Angle Super Macro Lenses?

Ultrawide Macros, according to my experience, are only useable for a very special setups.

As a macro photographer, everything below 85mm is getting less and less flexible.

And yes I tried the ef-s 35mm with the build in ring LEDs. Got rid of it asap. The ring light is a joke.

When is the rf 180mm coming, that would be something.

Canon RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1L IS USM Z ?

Thanks to everyone for the wonderful replies. To those who have the 100-500mm L; how is it to go zoom from 100 to 500mm? That's my main interest in a Z version; when comparing the 70-200mm L vs. the Z the amount of rotation needed is only slight on the latter. That interests me! Being able to use TC's without losing focal length is a nice bonus when/if I go to full-frame as opposed the R7 APS-C I'm using currently.

I'm not worried about the 100-500mm being a 'dust pump', because fortunately it's certainly not. Perhaps there is nothing to worry about with the current model?

Canon RF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM II May Have Appeared in Latest Patent

oh, this was the wrong thread :ROFLMAO:I was talking about the rumored 300-600 ...

I know a 400/2.8 II will be expensive and will cost around 14k €.
I agree about the rumored price of the 300-600mm zoom. 8000 € would be 2/3’s of the price of the 2013 EF200-400mm f4 zoom with the built in 1.4 extender.

Macro lenses

I'd much prefer that too, but it's probably less of an issue with an extreme macro lens like this (ie it can't focus to infinity and so not really a hand-held portrait lens etc), which is likely to be used on a tripod (and maybe a rail as well). And I can forgive quite a bit at that price, if the optics are good.
Outside of the house, all my MP-E usage is handheld :) With the probe lens (at 2x magnification) I noticed that I can choose between a really grainy EVF or moving the lens when manipulating the aperture ring. The MP-E gives me the best of both: relatively clean EVF and no need to manipulate the lens before exposure.

On a rail, inside, this all doesn’t matter :)

RF 100-400 or RF 100-500

Thanks for the reply.. I also have the older Sigma EF 150-600 which is too much lens for this event. I really Want the 1990599... Maybe I sould sell them to KEH and (100-400 and the 150-600) and use the $ for the 100-500 or just rent the 100-500 for the weekend. ah dissions
Ron,
I do NOT recommend you rent the 100-500 ... you'll fall in love with it and be tempted to
buy it instead of return it. Just buy it. *G*. And maybe a 1.4 extender if you don't already
have one? This combo (100-500 + 1.4) is an excellent solution for wildlife/birds because
you get the extra reach without significant increase is size/weight. I've taken my camera body
of choice and these two pieces of optics on all my recent trips (birding - around the world)
and have never wanted anything else. And I have a 200-800. - Jim in the PNW

Canon sold almost half all cameras made in 2023

A new year of data (2024) is in:
https://dclife.jp/camera_news/article/etc/2025/0828_01.html#google_vignette
  1. Canon: 3.53 million units (43.2%)
  2. Sony: 2.33 million units (28.5%)
  3. Nikon: 960,000 units (11.7%)
  4. Fujifilm: 740,000 units (9.0%)
  5. Panasonic: 280,000 units (3.4%)
  6. OM Digital: 160,000 units (1.9%)
  7. Ricoh Imaging: 70,000 units (0.8%)
For reference here is the data for 2023:
  1. Canon: 3.34 million units (46.5%)
  2. Sony: 2 million units (27.9%)
  3. Nikon: 810,000 units (11.3%)
  4. Fujifilm: 430,000 units (6.0%)
  5. Panasonic: 260,000 units (3.6%)
  6. OM Digital: 180,000 units (2.5%)
  7. Ricoh Imaging: 60,000 units (0.8%)
Canon remains in the top position but their market share has decreased. Also noteworthy is that Sony, Nikon and Fujifilm all increased market share. The previous belief was that Sony was gaining market share from Nikon. That now definetly isn't the case. If we look at the growth of each company we get:
  • Fujifilm — grew 72.1%
  • Nikon — grew 18.5%
  • Ricoh — grew 16.7%
  • Sony — grew 16.5%
  • Average — 14% growth
  • Median — 9.8% growth
  • Panasonic — grew 7.7%
  • Canon — grew 5.7%
  • OMDS — shrunk 11.1%
Very good to see the overall market grow. Because of their small market share, changes in Panasonic, OM and Ricoh are pretty insignificant. So the change in overall market share is coming from Fuji, Nikon and Sony growing at a faster rate than Canon. A large reason for that is the reduction in DSLR:
  • 2024: Canon 790,000 units, Nikon 70,000 units, Pentax 10,000 units
  • 2023: Canon 920,000 units, Nikon 130,000 units, Pentax 10,000 units
  • 2022: Canon 1.32 million units, Nikon 200,000 units, Pentax 10,000 units
  • 2021: Canon 1.57 million units, Nikon 440,000 units, Pentax 10,000 units
DSLR's will likely drop 200,000+ units in 2025 and will be gone in 4 - 5 years.

If we look at just mirrorless:
  1. Canon: 2.05 million units 39.3% - 5% Growth
  2. Sony: 1.63 million units 31.2% - 7% Growth
  3. Nikon: 760,000 units 14.6% - 21% Growth
  4. Fujifilm: 490,000 units 9.4% - 29% Growth
  5. Panasonic: 160,000 units 3.1% - 14% Growth
  6. OM Digital: 130,000 units 2.5% - 8% Growth
Baring any major disruptions in the market I believe this reflects the direction of where market share is headed as DSLR's phase out. That leads to a market that is a bit more balanced if the smaller brands continue to grow faster than the larger ones.
Note that if we look at change in share of the Mirrorless market we get:

Fujifilm gained 1.4% of the market (9.39% up from 7.98%)
Nikon gained 1.3% of the market (14.56% up from 13.24%)
Panasonic gained 0.1% of the market (3.07% up from 2.94%)

OM Digital was essentially flat (2.49% from 2.52%)
Sony lost 0.9% of the market (31.23% down from 32.14%)
Canon lost 1.9% of the market (39.27% down from 41.18%)

On the DSLR side, I suspect your 4-5 years until the market is effectively gone is probably optimistic and we'll see it gone for all intents and purposes by 2027.

Canon RF 300-600mm f/5.6L IS USM, Here We Go Again

Something different. CR doesn't allow me to post in the thread to

Canon EOS R7 Mark II is Reportedly in the Wild

I think that is a technical problem. But if these rumors are coming true that the R7 II's body layout returns to Canon's standard layout, I'ii be really fast with an upgrade. :D
I've also been getting the same problem for a while now :(

Leica to Announce the M11-V, but is it still a Rangefinder?

How does Leica's triple resolution technology differ from Canon MILC's ability to output JPGs in three or four different resolutions (L, M, S1 and S2 for the R5)? Can the Leica output raw images in multiple resolutions?

Yes, they can produce different raw file resulution thanks to Triple Resolution (in-camera pixel binning) technology. Very handy if you don't need full resolution all the time.

Just Announced! Mitakon 55mm f/2.8 1-5X Macro Lens Available for Canon RF

He mentions the MP-E 65mm (being 3 times the price), but my understanding was that that lens had been disontinued for some time now? Maybe there are still new copies available in some stores?
The post about the discontinuation of the MP-E 65mm is from november 2022: https://www.canonrumors.com/canon-officially-discontinues-the-mp-e-65mm-f-2-8-1-5x-macro/

Autofocus Stress Test: Can Canon’s Dual Pixel AF II

i have found R52 auto focus in tennis from the back fence to be very good, faces are identified at 90 ft / 200mm focal length. tracking / servo is great as the precapture. subject tracking through the view finder during HS+ shooting is glitch free. i would say the electronic shutter read out speed is a little on the slow side as i can perceive distorted balls/rackets.
