Officially Canon stated a week ago they have not given up on EF , but rather are "optimzing" the lineup.


Mirrorless is definitely their focus right now, but there are some like myself who won't buy that and canon knows this

So they will probably have more systems now with less products available in each system

Many people used the non-telescoping zoom as a reason they preferred the EF 70-200 f/2.8L and f/4L over the 70-300 f/4-5.6L. super common sentiment

So whether or not people are saying it now because this RF lens is the new thing and the only RF option available of this type, yes a lot do agree with you. Personally I use the telescoping ef 70-300 f/4-5.6L for travel when I want to keep the size down, and the non-telescoping ef 70-200 f/2.8L is II for sports/racing when I need fast and precise zoom.

I hope Canon use the opportunity to use the iris scanning used for the eye control as a security unlocking option just like thumbprint scanner for smartphones .
Iris scanner would better for cameras as we sometimes need to wear gloves

Sorry, should have been more clear. My comment was more on the 'disable IBIS separate from the lens'. Which on both the other cameras, I suppose you can say that 'feature' is enabled by default . All joking aside... to say it's an 'issue' vs a 'want' is what I was getting at.

I considered renting this lens during one of Lens Rentals' sale periods. I read reviews and commentary on the lens, and they scared me off. I feared that I wouldn't make enough progress in learning to use the lens over ten days to bother. I also wondered about subject matter. My 100mm with and without extension tubes will suffice for almost anything I'm likely to take anyway. I do have a cheap rail, which is sturdy enough for anything I have done. I also have a ring "flash" which is really not that usable as a flash, but works fine as a continuous light which I switch on just before the shot. If I got into macro shooting in a big way, I'd probably invest in higher quality accessories.

There is the possibility that if I had the lens for a while, I'd start shooting things that I don't think about now. Back in my T3i days I splurged and bought a $15 set of extension tubes, of course with no electrical contacts. I attached my crummy 75–300mm zoom and took some shots of small things, of course with everything wide open. Results were surprisingly good. I had a potted chrysanthemum with small blooms. I took a shot of part of one of the blooms and liked it so well that I had it printed at 16" x 20", and it is in my living room. From that I decided I did want to do more with macro, so I bought the non-L 100mm. And then last year when I was using photo projects to substitute for going places and doing things, I ordered some off-brand extension tubes that do have electrical contacts. The tubes came in on my last day with the rented 24mm TS-E lens, so I tried them with it, using the tilt for getting more in focus. That worked great, so I have thought about getting or renting a TS-E macro, but can't make much of a case to myself for a particular focal length. If I were making money off product photography (or wanting to do so), I'd likely have several.

Kinda tough for bokeh to not be creamy at 135mm f/1.4. I would think it would be even better. Absolutely will not be near the same price as the EF.

Be happy that all your gear is working and you don't have to deal with the service center.
And praise Canon for having a good implementation of detection of correct FW.
I don't want to imagine what could happen, when you overwrite your 5D4 memory with 7D2 FW - if that was possible...

Well, I don't know what features of cameras and lenses will have in five years from now or how much will they cost but I'm almost certain that I will not want to change. Why? Because I'm not really interested in the new features I read about here.
Just to mention the latest: eye controlled AF. I think you simply don't need more than 5x6 AF points in a camera. Or In-body Image Stabilization. Ok, it will probably make lenses smaller. But will it be included in all cameras? What if a camera with IBIS goes wrong and the replacement camera does not have this feature? And if the lenses still will have IS what do we need the IBIS for? How can I turn off IBIS if I don't need it for any reason? On lenses I simply switch it off with the IS switch. Will it have a button on the camera to make turning on and off simple?
Touch-screen? Button illumination? Vari-angle screens? What for? I made a self portrait with my 1200D and only needed a remote controller and two shots to get a picture that was perfect for my needs. The more software and electronic parts you have in a camera the more things that can go wrong. By the way, this step in my opinion is very similar to the decision of motherboard makers: all motherboards you can buy could run any modern games and you have to buy it even if you would like to use your computer only for text editing and mailing and never want to run any stupid FPS (or other) games.

As a person who mostly shoots wildlife.....I've been more annoyed at the black screen after trying to wake the R5 up a few times.....the screen and view finder are solid black but the IS is activated and camera awake etc.....missed a few shots. Only fix turn the camera on and off again.

Something that I thought was super interesting with the Atoms Ninja V+ announcement this morning was that the recorder can record 8k ProResRAW from the R5! The only other mention I recall seeing of external raw recording from a Canon camera was their whacky 8k cinema camera that needs (or at least previously needed) 4 external recorders to make an 8k image.

Today's Atomos announcement seemed like a big announcement for Canon too; seems like they're changing/opening up their viewpoint a little on how they view external recording

Just in case somebody hesitates.
I own the Nissin MF 18 ringflash, in a Canon "dedicated" version. I believed I could use it on any more or less recent Canon DSLR or MILC. I should have looked for compatibility on the Nissin website...
This flash doesn't work on many Canon cameras, for instance on the latest models, with the exception of the EOS R, it's not even compatible with the EOS 5D IV.
Lesson learnt: stick with original accessories, if you, like me, hate expensive surprises.

I was just outside trying to take self-portraits of myself and experienced a bug with my R5. In Servo, Continuous AF mode with Self-Timer Enabled, the camera will not track my face while the timer is counting down. Instead, it will hold single-point focus from when I initially press the shutter, only. This means all my self-portraits are blurry when I step back. Right as it takes the photo, the LCD screen will show the locked blue focus square quickly flash to a white face tracking box over my face, but it will not refocus.

Would anyone else check their R5 to see if this issue occurs for them? My firmware version is the most recent, 1.3.1. I just called Canon and reported it. It'll be forwarded to their engineers.

The one I like to remember was when I saw the early patent post for the RF 800mm DO lens. I noticed 2 things: it didn't have any IS elements indicated in it (obviously they did add IS to it in production) and that there were absolutely no lenses in the back of it so that I predicted it would have a collapsing ability to shorten it's length by ~30% or so for storage. That one I nailed!

Ha! Ha!. When you figure that out, I hope you share your info with the same insight and enthusiasm as your camera predictions. Now, go get to work on it.

I'd ask Canon for a replacement foot. Finish issues from improperly prepared parts do happen. They can be one off or batch related. If the paint is not adhering well and not bonded to the primer then it might chip easily.

Curious how the new RF mount can benefit supertelephoto technology.
would be nice to see some interesting new supertelephoto lenses like a 500mm 5.6, 200-600mm, 600mmf5.6 or f8 feel these will sell very well. Don’t believe it would canabalize the f4 sales either. Just like 16-35f 2.8 vs f4 or 70-200mmf2.8 and f4 some people would be happy with abit less weight but good performance. Like some of the older seasoned pros who sometimes would like to lug around something less backbreaking.
It nice to have options.

Cooking RAWs is a different thing and has nothing to do with T-stops IMO.

But as physicist I agree 100% with your opinion about cooking RAWs: It is a no go. I want the real original really raw data - processing should be a separated step done independently and without any loss of the original data. That was always the reason to use RAW - exploit more and more information with increased knowledge and processing power about/of computers.
