R5 'Exposure Simulation' behavior with and without hotshoe trigger.

I do what I’ve always done. C1 with Exp. Sim off. Take a test shot of my ambient looking at the EV scale. Usually takes one or two shots. Turn on flash and that’s it.

For sure, In my case I use a similar method to you and had no trouble achieving the correct exposure and balance between flash and ambient. My interest was on the (potential) affect on AF performance in a partially backlit, white room. The subject becomes quite dark because the camera is adjusting the live view image to be darker (because of the white and backlighting etc.). The camera also did not brighten the image to achieve focus like it usually would which was strange. It would be nice to be able turn exposure simulation on with a hotshoe trigger attached to the camera (in specific situations)... but it doesn’t look like you can

Edit: Just read in another thread on this same topic that it is possible to set the DOF preview button to momentarily show the ambient exposure (even with trigger on the hotshoe)

Here is the Canon EOS R3

I agree and now that it's unfolding it is obvious that Canon has had a plan all along and what we are seeing is pretty much according to their plan. They do not function oblivious to what's going on and they refrain from knee-jerk reactions knowing that it's the long haul that matters. Perhaps their plan is not perfect but it is well thought out.

It’s canons version of a can of whoop a$$

Who is missing a smaller SPOT-AF-Point on The R5?

I still have a 5DSR so I did the measurements directly. Here are shots from DPP4 of the size of the central focussing square, using the 100-400mm II on the R5 and 5DSR to photo a TV test card a few minutes ago. It's the same size on the R5 (or slightly larger) and the 5DSR with either point focus or central square. It's quite possible the square in DPP just shows where the focus is and not the size of the focus area.

View attachment 197402
Sadly DPP does not show the real size of the focal point. That's why you can sometimes see the focus not being aligned with the focal point marker. I pretty much gave up on using the function in DPP for this reason (Disclaimer: maybe later updates have since improved on this last issue).

Canon will announce more lenses at one time than ever before in the 2nd half of 2021 [CR2]

I still own an EOS M6 plus three EF-M / EF-S lenses.
I would like to switch to a set of two full frame bodies (my current R and a R6) but I can't sell my EOS M6 plus EF-M 11-22mm because sometimes I need a wideangle.

I don't need a heavy RF 15-35 F/2.8 L and I don't want to buy an EF 16-35mm F/4 IS L.

Please Canon, give me a
  • RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM or
  • RF 18-45mm f/4-5.6 IS STM or
  • anything in the range RF 17-30mm F/4 or slower, L or not, USM or STM,
and you'll have a happy customer.
The biggest issue is the IS and focal range. I just really don’t need IS in a lens if Ibis is in the camera. It’s not as good as is but it is very good.

These E Mount lenses are very competitive size wise and with cost on the Tamron end. It would be a dream to have a 28-70 non is like the sigma and Tamron, e Mount. I honestly don’t need the 24-35 in the 24-70 if I am also using the 16-35.

Pro DSLRs

Can anyone tell me if Canon has given up on us Pro DSLR users? I don't want a mirrorless! Please don't start telling me about any advantages to mirrorless, I don't care.
Officially Canon stated a week ago they have not given up on EF , but rather are "optimzing" the lineup.

Mirrorless is definitely their focus right now, but there are some like myself who won't buy that and canon knows this

So they will probably have more systems now with less products available in each system

Prefer EF 70-200 f2.8 Over RF, Am I Crazy?

I'm primarily focused on using the 70-200 for sports, and I feel crazy, but does the throw distance on the RF bother anyone else? Or bother enough to not get it? I rented it, and am surprised at how noticeable it is. And how stiff the zoom is as well as ring dampening. I understand this was all necessary with the new telescoping design, but am shocked its barely a footnote in most reviews. Anyone shooting sports with the RF version and think you get used it?
Many people used the non-telescoping zoom as a reason they preferred the EF 70-200 f/2.8L and f/4L over the 70-300 f/4-5.6L. super common sentiment

So whether or not people are saying it now because this RF lens is the new thing and the only RF option available of this type, yes a lot do agree with you. Personally I use the telescoping ef 70-300 f/4-5.6L for travel when I want to keep the size down, and the non-telescoping ef 70-200 f/2.8L is II for sports/racing when I need fast and precise zoom.

R5 Image Stabilisation Issue

I'll continue to use that "nice feature" on 1DXII and 5DIV bodies during my professional whale watching shooting and use the R5 purely with my hobbyist hat on. If the specific functionality is released on the R3 and not subsequently on the R5 via firmware, without any corresponding explanation of any technical limitations, I'll suspect it will be a marketing "up-sell" decision
Sorry, should have been more clear. My comment was more on the 'disable IBIS separate from the lens'. Which on both the other cameras, I suppose you can say that 'feature' is enabled by default ;) . All joking aside... to say it's an 'issue' vs a 'want' is what I was getting at.

Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro

I agree! Nice shot and lighting.

I have only borrowed this lens for one weekend, and I found it quite hard to use. Besides... using my 100L macro is fairly easy, and I can lean on a wall for support. Going into the MP-E 65 requires a substantial investment in additional gear with quality macro rails and flashes, but most of all you need to have time :)
I considered renting this lens during one of Lens Rentals' sale periods. I read reviews and commentary on the lens, and they scared me off. I feared that I wouldn't make enough progress in learning to use the lens over ten days to bother. I also wondered about subject matter. My 100mm with and without extension tubes will suffice for almost anything I'm likely to take anyway. I do have a cheap rail, which is sturdy enough for anything I have done. I also have a ring "flash" which is really not that usable as a flash, but works fine as a continuous light which I switch on just before the shot. If I got into macro shooting in a big way, I'd probably invest in higher quality accessories.

There is the possibility that if I had the lens for a while, I'd start shooting things that I don't think about now. Back in my T3i days I splurged and bought a $15 set of extension tubes, of course with no electrical contacts. I attached my crummy 75–300mm zoom and took some shots of small things, of course with everything wide open. Results were surprisingly good. I had a potted chrysanthemum with small blooms. I took a shot of part of one of the blooms and liked it so well that I had it printed at 16" x 20", and it is in my living room. From that I decided I did want to do more with macro, so I bought the non-L 100mm. And then last year when I was using photo projects to substitute for going places and doing things, I ordered some off-brand extension tubes that do have electrical contacts. The tubes came in on my last day with the rented 24mm TS-E lens, so I tried them with it, using the tilt for getting more in focus. That worked great, so I have thought about getting or renting a TS-E macro, but can't make much of a case to myself for a particular focal length. If I were making money off product photography (or wanting to do so), I'd likely have several.

Patent: Canon RF 130mm f/1.4L USM and other fast primes

I love my EF 135 f/2 and it works even better on the R5 than it did on the 5D mk IV, due to IBIS and eye autofocus. I don't think that Canon will match the EF 135 price, size, weight or bokeh "creaminess" with the rumored RF 135, so I don't see myself buying it.
Kinda tough for bokeh to not be creamy at 135mm f/1.4. I would think it would be even better. Absolutely will not be near the same price as the EF.

7DII - problem with firmware update

Thank you all for your replies.
I decided to try Antono and Maximillian's suggestions of SD vs CF cards (with only one in the camera and when doing this realised.......I had picked up my 5DIV by mistake. D'oh!
:rolleyes::oops::oops::mad::ROFLMAO::LOL::devilish::sneaky:o_O:cautious:...oh, how many emojis can express how I feel right now???:oops:o_O:rolleyes:

Who mentioned Occam's razor....?????
Mike, don't blame yourself.
Be happy that all your gear is working and you don't have to deal with the service center. (y)
And praise Canon for having a good implementation of detection of correct FW. :geek:
I don't want to imagine what could happen, when you overwrite your 5D4 memory with 7D2 FW - if that was possible...

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM & Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L USM II Discontinued

Well, I don't know what features of cameras and lenses will have in five years from now or how much will they cost but I'm almost certain that I will not want to change. Why? Because I'm not really interested in the new features I read about here.
Just to mention the latest: eye controlled AF. I think you simply don't need more than 5x6 AF points in a camera. Or In-body Image Stabilization. Ok, it will probably make lenses smaller. But will it be included in all cameras? What if a camera with IBIS goes wrong and the replacement camera does not have this feature? And if the lenses still will have IS what do we need the IBIS for? How can I turn off IBIS if I don't need it for any reason? On lenses I simply switch it off with the IS switch. Will it have a button on the camera to make turning on and off simple?
Touch-screen? Button illumination? Vari-angle screens? What for? I made a self portrait with my 1200D and only needed a remote controller and two shots to get a picture that was perfect for my needs. The more software and electronic parts you have in a camera the more things that can go wrong. By the way, this step in my opinion is very similar to the decision of motherboard makers: all motherboards you can buy could run any modern games and you have to buy it even if you would like to use your computer only for text editing and mailing and never want to run any stupid FPS (or other) games.

Canon now allowing external raw recording?

Something that I thought was super interesting with the Atoms Ninja V+ announcement this morning was that the recorder can record 8k ProResRAW from the R5! The only other mention I recall seeing of external raw recording from a Canon camera was their whacky 8k cinema camera that needs (or at least previously needed) 4 external recorders to make an 8k image.

Today's Atomos announcement seemed like a big announcement for Canon too; seems like they're changing/opening up their viewpoint a little on how they view external recording

Canon or Nissin macro ringflash ?

Just in case somebody hesitates.
I own the Nissin MF 18 ringflash, in a Canon "dedicated" version. I believed I could use it on any more or less recent Canon DSLR or MILC. I should have looked for compatibility on the Nissin website...
This flash doesn't work on many Canon cameras, for instance on the latest models, with the exception of the EOS R, it's not even compatible with the EOS 5D IV.
Lesson learnt: stick with original accessories, if you, like me, hate expensive surprises.

R5 Self-Timer Continuous AF Bug - anyone else?

I was just outside trying to take self-portraits of myself and experienced a bug with my R5. In Servo, Continuous AF mode with Self-Timer Enabled, the camera will not track my face while the timer is counting down. Instead, it will hold single-point focus from when I initially press the shutter, only. This means all my self-portraits are blurry when I step back. Right as it takes the photo, the LCD screen will show the locked blue focus square quickly flash to a white face tracking box over my face, but it will not refocus.

Would anyone else check their R5 to see if this issue occurs for them? My firmware version is the most recent, 1.3.1. I just called Canon and reported it. It'll be forwarded to their engineers.

Thanks!
