Anyone notice a rendering problem?

Wow - that's weird. So, it only happens in DPP?
JPEGs out of camera are affected no matter what, but I thought the raw files were messed up too because I only quickly looked at them in DPP- which lets you toggle on and off auto lighting optimiser- and with it turned off they look fine. In photoshop the raw files look fine by default.

When is it safe to use the silent shutter?

To be fair, all mirrorless still cameras that I know of have this same issue when using their electronic or semi-electronic shutter. I wouldn't blame Canon for it any more than I would any other camera maker.

When I briefly used a Sony A7 III, it did this just as bad.

I feel like we're kind of in an awkward spot with mirrorless camera technology right now... The technology is there to have a completely electronic shutter, but the sensor readouts are not fast enough to produce a clean photo under some lighting conditions. This should be fixed when the technology progresses to the point where it's easy to have a sensor that reads out all at once, but no one has gotten to this point yet, at least cheaply enough to put into a consumer camera.

So for now, when in doubt, use a fully mechanical shutter, regardless of who's camera you're using.

Irix 150mm Macro for preorder

Hmm, disappointing.

A nice lens, just not sharp. It appears well built and I like the foot. But I already have the Sigma 180 (with AF which works well), so I have no need for this lens.

I wonder when Sigma will produce a 180 Art macro. If they do, I sincerely hope it will not have a fiddly 'focus by wire'.

A1 print on the Eos R looks good!

Agreed! I actually measured my comfortable closest viewing distance with this print and it was about 60cm ...but I'm old and wear multi focals. I do find that when my daughters show me something on their cell phones that I have to push the phone further away!
Its not that I actually want to print this size regularly, its just nice to know I can...truth is much of my commercial work ends up on the web or at most as double page spreads in magazines...

Canon EOS R - Error 070

If a low level format does not work, toss the card and get a UHS II card that the R supports. I would not return the camera because a $10 card did not work with it.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0143RT8OY/?tag=canorumo-20

I immediately did the low level format on that card, and all others as well. Have not gotten that error since, and have been taking test shots here and there. Thanks for the link, I have placed an order for a couple of UHS-II !

HELP - 5D mark III quick buttons flash function settings

Hi,

I need a bit of help here from 5Dmk3 owners. I have 1.2.3 firmware in my mk3 and am so curious as to is there change in later firmwares to allow flash function settings to be assigned to custom controls. I was able to set it to set button and was quickly accessible to me when ever i needed it. It was available on 5Dmk2 and is available on 5Dmk4, but i cant seem to find it on 5Dmk3.

Please help guys.

EOS R @ HD 24fps 1/50 sec shutter HDMI out canon log Ninja 2

Hey gang.

Typed in all the buzz words relative to this.

Have an old Ninja 2 I used to use on an 5D3 (ah..2014.. the memories). Just shot video for the first time on the eos R last night with just the internal video. I know the ninja V is being paired with the R for HDMO out b/c of the 4K. However HD is the name of my game, not 4K, and the Ninja supports 10bit 4:2:2. Sounds like the perfect candidate for a canon LOG test to see how it holds up. This is to shoot a band at a bar.

just sending out a request fo any advice since I'm primarily a photographer, not a video shooter, however I do some fo the basics:

1) I custom white balace on set.
2) I keep the sound on manual to avoid the constant chase of auto record levels. I keep it below -12DB.
3) I use a rode stereo video mic, pre 2018 redesign. This is where I need help, on the 5D3 you set it on +20db to reduce the boost needed on the camera preamp. Is that necessary on the R? I heard the preamp is better on that.
4) I do use the on chip image stabilization but at its setting of 1 instead of enhanced. Using a non IS 24-70
5) Are there any tips on on canon log settings or picture style? I heard a sharpness of +1 really helps the video.

Shooting will be at f2.8, already tested the continuous face tracking for AF. Shutter at 1/50th of a sec, iso at 6400.

Suggestiosn for the audio... should I just connected it directly to the atoms or loop it thru the camera and then headphone out to the mic in of the Atomos?

any additional suggestions appreciated. thx!

Photokina 2019 scheduled for May has been cancelled, show to return annually May 2020

The Photography Show in the UK is well attended in March every year. What saved the show was allowing retailers to sell both new and S/H equipment many with trade show discounts from the likes on Canon, Nikon, Sony etc.
We exhibit at both The Photography Show and Photokina and by comparison Photokina whilst much larger was stale and boring and badly needed a make-over.
The visitors to The Photography Show now come expecting to spend money and partake in workshops, demonstrations and areas to try equipment out its much more vibrant.

7D Mk II Macro auto focus help needed

Hi Roger.
Yes I believe the solution is to select 65 point auto selection zone and one shot AF, I just tried it on a wall outside and it seemed to work, oblique angle and only a few points lit, parallel and all points lit, it might work in large zone AF and zone AF as well but I did not think to test these, I just nipped outside in the cold in a T-shirt so I didn’t hang around!

Cheers, Graham.

Canon announces new waterproof and shockproof Canon VIXIA camcorders

I can't help being both amused and annoyed by "capable of functioning in temperatures as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit /-10 degrees Celsius". Of course that's probably an ultraconservative estimate (Canon SLRs operate happily at -30°C despite manuals suggesting their limit is 0°C), but still, -10°C is not really cold, even more or less all smartphones work fine at that regardless of what their manufacturers do or don't promise.

EOS R firmware update

Hi. At the launch event - if I remember correctly - Canon mentioned a firmware update "...available soon...". Any news?
Thanks, Stefano
The announcement did not say coming soon, people seem to insert what they want, and others repeat it.

Here is want was said " An upcoming free firmware update will enable silent shutter in continuous shooting mode as well. "

Read it here:

https://www.dailycameranews.com/2018/09/canon-eos-r-full-frame-mirrorless-camera-announced/

Don't expect a update before March. Then, if its sooner, be happy!

The best of 2018 in gear as selected by our readers

I voted for the M50. I think is the better camera for the money and at the moment the system with the most lens options. Also the 70-200 F4 II is a lot of lens for the money and will be far more reachable (will produce more imagery) than many of the other options.
I was and am more than pleased with my M50 purchase and the results it produces, even with the basic 15-45mm kit lens and at such a low price. When using Sigma's 18-35mm F1.8 Art lens, this combo produces amazing photos.

Bit the EOS R bullet!

One of my SD card (32GB SDHC Lexar Platinum II 300x 45mbs) which I have been using on my 5D3 gives an error on my EOS R. When I turn on the R with that card in (I have not reformatted it yet) after a minute I get the Error 070. Looking it up online reveals that error is associated with problem with reading the image detected and typically says to remove and reinstall battery. I am going to try reformatting this card before I get the error to see if that helps. All my other SD cards did not have any issues on R even when I did not reformat. If anyone experienced this before, let me know what your finding was. Is there an issue with the body, should I return it just to be safe?

I need to get UHS-II cards for this badboy. I remember seeing an article about the fastest cards and was highly recommended. Any advice on which ones you all prefer and find them highly reliable?

I found ProGrade, Sony and Lexar among the top 3 for UHS-II. Never heard of ProGrade before, but supposedly they are pretty good?

I did not but the fastest cards, but instead bought 2 mid range UHSII cards, first a Delkin Prime 64GB 1900X for $50, and then a Lexar 128Gb 1000x when they went on sale for $45 at B&H. The Delkin is rated 1900X, its 100 MB/sec write and 300 MB/sec read, while the Lexar is 90 MB/sec write and 150 MB/sec read, both are V60.

V60 is the recommended speed for 4k video in the R, faster cards download faster, or clear your buffer faster, but are no better for video.

Both cards are overkill for me.

Did you get/treat yourself to anything new during the holidays?

Hi Jay.
Looks good to me, should serve you well.

Cheers, Graham.

Here's one of my early efforts at a women's hockey game. The cropping isn't anything to rave about, but the players behind the net and across the frame are all sharp. JPG conversion from RAW in DPP, no fixes in DPP, no crop. ISO 6400, 1/640 sec F5. AI Servo, Five points selected. The main point on the right bent knee of #19. The blue line to the right is a post. Lens Canon 70-200 F4 IS.
