Teardown: Lensrentals.com checks out what’s inside the Canon EOS R

Several things happened. First, Roger rushed to get the teardown up and then had to take planes, trains, and automobiles (not necessarily in that order) to get from Memphis to Boston, did two days of teaching, and then the reverse back. I am willing to make comments from an article on my phone, but not to try to modify the Wordpress document. So I didn't change the text.

As to the material, it felt slightly fuzzy, flexible and thin. Not like magnesium chassis I had felt before and honestly I try not to read the manufacturer's stuff before I do a teardown or test. It felt completely non-metallic. After publishing I heard from a couple of friends who know a lot more about materials than I do who suggested it is an SLM printed magnesium alloy which often has the kind of texture i felt and is lighter than standard Mg frames. After reading some descriptions, that seems consistent with what I was looking at.

Roger

Your website, your articles, your teardown - well, just generally all your work with photographic gear is much appreciated. Including by those on the other side of the globe (e.g. I'm in Australia).

I totally get the fit in work while one can in a travelling lifestyle, with planes, trains and automobiles (I have traveled much over my life, both for my work and other reasons).

Thanks for your explanation above too. It's certainly interesting. The non metallic feeling of the new SLM printed magnesium alley is an interesting direction Canon is taking.

As well as immensely enjoying using my current photography gear, for taking photos of scenes, people and things I love; I also look forward to what the future holds.

DPreview Article: "Greater freedom: Canon's engineers talk about the EOS R project"

Ah, so they did make adjustments for video users. Interesting.

Anyway, on the R, the M Fn button can be customized to quickly cycle between your current mode and the three custom modes you have programmed. Found this out a couple days ago when I was messing around with a store model...indeed, nice. Could be even quicker than using a mode dial in some instances since you don’t even need to take your hand off the lens or eye from the VF. Still wish the R had one though.
Thanks form the info that the modes are in the evf.

Matt Granger Nikon Z7 review

A few days ago, I went into to have a look at the R at my favourite B&M camera store and had a chat with one of the salesmen there.
He told me that he's had a lot of people come in to see the R and he's sold a few of them.
He also told me that he's had hardly any interest in the Nikon mirrorless and hasn't sold one yet.

I wonder how the comparative sales will be for these new cameras.

I still like my 5D3...…………..

EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II and EF 500mm f/4L IS II to receive updates in mid to late 2019 [CR2]

Not so fast. An announcement by the end of 2019 means that you will not get it before Q1 2020 or even Q2 2020 depending how long it takes Canon to deliver. Are you sure you will not need the 500mm until then?

Not back then when I posted, but I will need it now for my Canada winter wildlife trip in January :)

Photokina 2018 - A walk on photokina and some nice shooting experience with some awesome lenses - For Canon as well as µ43...

As usual I joined Photokina 2018. I took 3 Cameras with me to get some experience of lenses I haven't checked -and to get a better feeling for lenses I have not used so far...

What had been the best experiences

  • The EOS-M 32mm f1.4 Great bokeh... great lens
  • The Tamron 28-300mm super Zoom - really stunning in image quality for price and size...
  • the new Autofocus Samyang 14mm f2.8
  • And I have to say the Sigma ART are better than expected - while knowing they are good...
More of that you will find in my detailed review if you like...

Whoop here it is ; ad600 PRO

Recently bought a pair of the incredible and fast selling AD200 units, it's refreshing to have a nice simple compact setup with unexpectedly viable ETTL after the Witstro AD360's which are now for sale. They were so fiddly to set up. At the showroom I checked out the AD600 Pro. Wow I want into this system. I have six Einsteins which have been good, but now seem like they're from another era. I really hope PCB are developing something that can bring them up to date and be a meaningful alternative to the current ETTL, HSS internal battery offerings like the AD600. We're really spoiled for choice.

I held out hope that PCB would come up with something new and revolutionary like they did with the Einstein for several years. I ditched all my Einsteins and White Lightnings last year when Adorama had an insane sale on the AD600. I absolutely despise the Bowens mount, but it's not a huge deal because I mostly use Softlighters. I also hate the angle adjustment on the base of the light, but it's not as bad on the extension heads which I use with most of my AD600s. If they made a cheaper version of the Pro that doesn't include TTL, I would be much more inclined to upgrade.

Any tips for conserving battery power on a 5D4?

I tried my case relay that I bought to photograph the eclipse last year with my 5D MK IV, adapted to my SL-2, and now it works with my EOS R. I can use a large capacity USB battery and extend the life to much longer, and since the Case Relay has its own internal battery, it keeps the camera going while you are switching USB Batteries. They are relatively inexpensive, even for those with high capacity, and you can use them to recharge or operate a phone as well. It works as a AC power supply as well, just plug it into a USB power adaptor for continuous power.

Battery capacity is no longer very high on my list of concerns.

Question About Memory Card Failures

I borrowed a card from my 5D MK IV to check out my R, I have a lot of cards, but that one was handy. I do not have any UHS-II cards though, so I educated myself on what the various options are Canon recommended a class V60 or higher to use 4K, so I went ahead and ordered a Delkin V60 class card. There are V90 class cards at twice the price, but buying something faster than the camera can use for twice the price did not seem smart. I'll see how well it does when it gets here from Adorama. I'll always have lots of SD cards around, but if I like higher speed, I'll get a second one, perhaps a different brand to avoid any likelihood of two failing from a common weak point.

Flagship EOS R camera coming in February ahead of CP+? [CR1]

YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT IN EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!

Well, no he is not! I´m sorry but no! Because he is missing the most important thing, not everybody has his needs, not everybody makes photography or video like he does...And even so, there are solutions!

Well, let´s start for the video. If you are using a laptop and external drives to edit 4k video, then you are not a videographer. Maybe someone that like video and sometimes makes some fancy videos to put on youtube. If you need 4k and if you make videos professionally (and saying professionally is like earning money, not about quality), then you´ll need a lot more equipment. You´ll need a powerfull PC (I work with 2), you´ll need some raid sistems, or a powerfull worksatiton to storage your data and to be able to work your data. Working with 4k videos from an external drive is a potencial risk to ruin your drive. Also, if you work with a laptop and external hard drive...well....that´s not a suitable solution for 4k video editing. Unless you have a powerfull macbook pro, but even so, it´s not the most suitable...
Saying that, i do understand your words about video and storage....but not everybody has that opinion or needs...

About photography.....well this one i really understand less...He´s complaining about how hard is to storage photos, and how "heavy" are the 5ds photos? Did i get it right?? Well, this is like buying a Ferrary and then complaining how much it consumes in fuel....This type of cameras have specific uses. 50MP photos are NOT the kind of photos you want if you are going to the park making 400 photos of your dog jumping to catch a ball...But ok, you can use it for everything. If you don´t need or you think the 50MP are a lot to you, it´s so simple....just use lower resolutions!!!! You can do it in you options! But by all means, DO NOT say that 50MP´s are a lot and they are not needed in photography!! Maybe yes, it is too much for the dog photos, but for a lot of things, yes, you do need MP´s.

So don´t get me wrong, i am not trying to criticize..but i think we are talking of 2 different types of photography and video...a more amateur use and a professional use. And it´s ok to be amateur, but by all means, do not buy professional cameras and then criticize it because of the storage or if 4k video is hard to edit...That´s just not right!!

Regarding to the topic, I do believe Canon will make both cameras, one with higher MP, and a "fast camera". I think the first to come is the high MP´s pretty much because the lenses you have available. Doesn´t make much sense to me, launching a fast camera, when you don´t have a 70-200 RF, 100-400 RF, or the big ones (there are rumours of a 600mm DO for RF sistem, but only in 2020.....) So according to lenses, it would make a lot of sense to launch first the high mp. (Sony make that mistake with the A9, but eve so, they have launched the 70-200 and the 100-400 at the same time....)

Looking forward to see what´s next of Canon, the EOS R was a good surprise, but I am waiting a pro body to see if i leave my A7R3 and get back to Canon sistem 100%. Would love to have a A7r3 equvalent to work with the 1dx mkII.

Cheers

Industry News: The L-Mount Alliance: a strategic cooperation between Leica Camera, Panasonic and Sigma

Well, when Sigma comes out with its full frame Foveon camera, an EF to L adapter, and a tweaked and faster Sigma SPP RAW converter/editor, I will be there. I will admit that Foveon is a special uses sensor, due to the need to stay close to base ISO, and that a few non-Sigma full-frame lenses have not worked out well (extreme corner color problems caused by angle of light hitting sensor) for the few people who have gotten an SA to EF mount conversion done on their Quattro H MILC. I have heard that Sigma Art and many non-Sigma L lenses look good on the Quattro H.

MTF to bring the first RF mount adapters to the world

Guess what I don't have to ruin my FD lenses because I still use them on my very old FD, FL and R cameras.
So it would be a complete waste of money to do as you say.
This way I do not have to screw up my FD type of lenses and can mount them directly to the new RF mount.
Now that is by far smarter and very sweet.

It doesn't ruin them. I have reversed the mount a few times. Just don't scratch the glass with your screwdriver. :) But I am currently using mine on EF mount Cinema Cameras, so very different purpose I guess. It's the only option available without adding an adapter with added glass. The FD - EOS M adapters are wonderful however. I reckon the FD - EOS R should work just as well.
