Canon FDn 135 f/2

Hi, I shot this on with the Canon FDn 135 f/2 on my M5 with an FD to EF-M adapter (No added elements unlike the EF adapters). Shot wide open at f/2.

I've been picking up these lenses where I can so I can do the ED Mika conversions on them and use them with my c500, but I've been testing each lens out on my M5 first. The results are lovely. I'll probably get a few spare primes to keep with my M5 seeing as they are so cheap (L series excluded). Also, just a lot of fun, and they just feel right on an M5.

Note: Image has been resized to 20% smaller to be able to upload.

EOS R, no way to register an AF point?

I know my 1DX2 has this but is it a feature of other Canon cameras in the $2000 range? Pretty sure my previous 6D didn't have it. I am interested in what features the R does/doesn't have or how they've changed/improved or hobbled the camera because it still might represent good value but I'm likely more interested in a more pro level version. I know after using a 1 level camera it will be hard to accept losing some of the features. One that I have that I love is the illuminated AF points!

Jack
Yes. The 7D, so I assume the 7D Mark II also. But like you said, not the 6D.

Who's excited for tomorrow?

I think you'll be surprised. It felt more than capable of shooting action to me.

A Canon rep said you could push the shutter as fast as you like, so maybe that’s a, horrible, workaround...

I tried my 1dx2 at 3 fps and it didn’t feel great. But, I fully understand this isn’t a sports camera... it should’ve had 6 fps though...

Canon EOS R trouble with third-party lenses

This is one of those things that I just do not understand.....

Way back when I was using an Olympus E-300, you could update the firmware of any lens by mounting it on the camera, connecting the camera to the computer with a USB cable, and running the software... Why is this not a standard for EVERYONE? ? ? Why would any manufacturer not want to have this ability?
It's a good question but doesn't really work in this case... a Canon body wouldn't upgrade Tamron/Sigma lenses anyway.

Computational Photography in late 2018 ... as implemented in Google Pixel 3 smartphone

Computational systems are relying more now on recognising what the subject is - they use it for face/eye recognition and for the new algorithms that advise the photographer on what is a 'good composition'. It is not beyond the realms of possibility that if you focus on a face it will map the edges of the person and overlay what it sees as the 'best' image of a walking person onto a composite of the background. It probably won't be perfect for some time but it would be interesting to see the capabilities.

Lens mount “brassing” on 300mm f/2.8L II

It should not need the whole mount replaced, this should just be a simple ring.... undo a few screws, pop off the ring, put a new one on, and calibrate.....

Of course, all of us forum users (myself included) are just guessing... send some pictures to Canon service and ask them.

Thank you. I spoke with them on the phone this morning. The phone agent said that it's impossible to tell unless they can physically evaluate the lens. The best guesstimate he could offer me was around $450, mostly accounting for the technician's time. With that said, you could be right -- I am not sure if the whole mount needs replacing, as there's no wear anywhere else. It's just that ring that sits flush against the camera mount that is worn.

Reliable CFast cards for 1D X Mark II

Jack, you say your card is a CFast 1 and not 2?

That's the big surprise because they are not rated that highly. The first one I got had an added sticker giving an updated speed rating but I long since threw that out. I have yet to try the second one at 4K 60 but the first card did over 30 minutes without a hiccup. I've been too busy as usual but will try to give an update soon. We've had the most crummy weather since late summer and garden harvesting has cut into my time etc.

POLL? How many are preordering the EOS R?

Not going to purchase one either. Had this camera come out last year at his time, before I bought my 5d4, then I'd probably be getting one. I'm going to wait for canon's more professional camera to come out and then decide. Even then, I'll probably wait for the second generation of these cameras and for the line to mature even more before making a move. My 5d4 and 6d will be plenty good for years to come.
I sold my 5d IV and came out ahead on the eos R, very glad I did, this camera is familiar yet more powerful. Only thing some people complain about that really matters vs the 5d IV is the single card slot. Insurance is always a good idea but for me I only used SD cards anyway so it didn’t matter. This is an improved 5d in my opinion. Some weird stuff missing though, where’s my built-in intervalometer? Otherwise ergonomics are perfect, not missing any old controls. Video is similar. Photos are similar, AF is better, flippy screen is better, battery life is good, Audio is better, and the lens adapter is an awesome tool to only need one variable ND TO RULE THEM ALL (don’t have it yet but I can speculate it will be good)! best of luck do everyone but I’m glad I switched.

Anyone upgrading?

I have just pulled the trigger on the mk4 as an upgrade for one of my mk3s which has hit 150k so decided time is right and for under 2k brand new with a 3 year guarantee its a no brainer, only prob is the first one i have received has an issue and is having to go back so fingers crossed that was a one off ! Will report back once I have done a good few shoots with it but coming to the end of the wedding season now so great time to get a new camera bedded in and practice !

The ability to use the cannon connect app and the much better video focusing will allow me to expand into areas the 5d3 is not as good with and any improved iso and dr is a bonus. Quite interested in using interval timing in camera too :)
