EF-S lenses working on EOS R?

I was thinking about selling my EF-S lenses ahead of the release of the R. But if I understand it correctly the EF-S lenses will work on the R body? Thinking of keeping some of them instead if that's the case..
According to the leaked specification, they will work on the R body (and may even be a good choice for shooting 4K video - if it is 1.75x cropped, as currently assumed by the collective opinion on this forum).

Nikon has advantage of being #2

As #2 Nikon can afford to be bold with their new products. Look at the Z7, it competes with the D850. They are not afraid to have the Z7 steal business from the D850. Plus the Z7 will steal business from Canon.

Canon on the other hand protects their products from each. They provide clear points of difference between each body. I wonder what they will do with the new ML? Will it compete (and exceed) the 5D M4 or 5DSR? Or will they cripple the camera is some critical way.

I think has made some great products but currently they are too conservative. They seem afraid that a new product will eat an existing products lunch. Well if theIr ML products are too cripple to product the 5D M4, 5DSR or 1Dx M2, they will fail. And to some extend Nikon will steal business from Canon.

So what is this. A plea to Canon, do your best. If the Z7 can shot 45.7MP at 9 FPS, then the next generation of 1DX or D6 should be able to shoot 30 MP at 12 FPS. Go for it.

This is just more market diversification. And I don't think it is any different than Canon, if they really are working on their own FF mirrorless. It's a new competitive market. Some people just plain and simply do not want a DSLR, and FF mirrorless has been dominated by Sony for a while. Canon, Nikon and even Panasonic it seems are now entering the FF mirrorless market. Even if it does "compete" with the D850, it will still bring in new business for Nikon, because there are many die-hard Nikon fans who want mirrorless FF, and would LOVE to have it from Nikon. It should be a growth opportunity for them more than anything.

There are some things I will only do with a DSLR. There are other things I really only care to do with mirrorless. Lot of times a DSLR is just way too bulky. Lot of times an EVF is so much more useful than an optical viewfinder (and it's odd for me to say that, as there was a time I wouldn't touch an EVF with a 10 foot pole...but they finally came of age, I guess. ;)). I would even offer that people could easily buy and own both Nikon D-series and Z-series cameras at the same time, as they are not necessarily mutually exclusive products. Same thing goes for Canon DSLRs and Mirrorless, or Sony DSLRs and Mirrorless.

ImagingResource - an interview with Nikon

I'd seen that as well.

But from the update yesterday on the story at I-R: I've bolded the quote. Hopefully there was no error in translation.

"(Update, 8/30/18, 1:16pm EDT: Contrary to the preceding and what's been reported by other outlets, this does not seem to be the case. We asked Nikon about low light AF limits, and received this reply: "AF is possible down to -4.3 EV with an f/1.8 lens, -4 EV with an f/2.0 lens and -2 EV with an f/4 lens." Also, there is no reduction in low light AF performance with F-mount lenses, apart from any due to maximum available aperture.)"

Sony No.1 in North America

It's not a subset. Sony is #1 in the entire ILC market, in the world, most likely. I can only verify that Canon is #1 in Japan while Sony is #1 in North America and #1 in China. Both North America and China are larger markets than Japan by quite some margin. I don't think Nikon does anywhere near the volume of Sony or Canon anymore. Also, bear in mind when you say Sony has released a ton of bodies lately and Canon hasn't, that Sony releases new bodies every year and Canon doesn't. So this is "as intended" and will likely continue along the same trajectory.

Canon looks ready for a huge release with the 24-70/2.0 zoom and 50/1.2 being released immediately for RF mount mirrorless. I think perhaps Canon will have a comeback starting now, but it probably will be more at the expense of Nikon than of Sony. I don't think Nikon is likely to ever move back up from the #3 spot.

Wedding pictures: Digital files or Prints

My point was to simply avoid the scenario where a couple only keeps a full set of wedding pixs on one of their phones, lose that phone and come crying back to original photog asking for new files. How long will you insure you keep their files for them and how much will a second copy of everything cost? Or do you only provide the initial copy, encourage they backup and make no promise of future availability or warranty as to the original media's longevity? That's what I was suggesting go in the T&C's. In the film era I had one fellow shooter have a couple come back 10 years later and want a whole new set of prints (house fire I think). Just something to think about and plan for.

I did not explain myself very well. Would not concerns about back ups for sharing on social media also apply to if you provide prints? I interpreted your comment as there being something special about sharing on social media.

More Mentions of a Canon Mirrorless Announcement Ahead of Photokina [CR1]

Since the pixel pitch is nearly identical, if one crops the 5Ds to the same size as the 7D Mark II, the results will be near identical as well. A FF sensor has no inherent advantages over an APS-C sensor if the images from both are enlarged by the same factor. The advantage of a FF vs. an APS-C sensor is all based on the lower enlargement ratio needed to get to the same display size.
Theoretically thats true practically I beg to differ

The Canon EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM confirmed again

All EF-M lenses to date, from 11mm to 200mm, have had the exact same diameter.
That's problem with non-unique names for things:
I meant lens element diameter (German: Lens) and not lens with enclosure diameter (German: Objektiv including lens elements) - thought, it was obvious from my writing in terms of scalings for the lens elements alone - but it was not, thanks for the hint!

Stock Notice: Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III at Adorama

..unless you upgrade from mark II.
Overall, I still am very happy with my EF 70-200L f2.8 II, one of my fav zoom lenses. I think the new Mk III is more attractive for those still using the Mk I lens or buying into this class for the first time. In optical quality, the leap between the quite old Mk I and the Mk II was huge, the latter is much sharper, overall seen. Plus, AF etc. was much then improved by Canon, so it was really worth upgrading. But according to Bryan Carnathan, still one of my fav sources for reviews of new Canon gear, they didn't change the optical design, only used some more advanced lens coatings (https://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-70-200mm-f-2.8L-IS-III-USM-Lens.aspx). So I expect no or only incremental visible improvements for Mk II users when it gets to real life photography.

That said, the Mk III is surely a great lens, no doubt about that. So congrats for your purchase, MrFotoFool, I am sure you will not regret it.

New features added to the Canon Rumors forum

The best new feature this site has is the personalised data management options - but is that only for Europeans?

What is "personalised data management"?

Good question. Not one that I'm sure I can answer except to say that I say "No" to every option presented.

This feature gives you a full list of the companies that get made aware of your activity on canonrumors- and the list is a lot lot longer than "facebook and google." Many of the names I've never heard of. But they're all there.

It would be good to see that feature made available to everyone, globally.

The previous version was compatible with TAP in dock already. also the front element had smudge proof coating.
I believe the update is just to unify the new Tamron SP line look
Not according to Tamron's page on list of compatible lenses for Tap console.

Canon USA: Canon Professional Services

Has anybody been denied CPS membership? What counts towards "majority of income": just pressing the shutter, or also pre-prep and post production? Does it mean majority of income with Canon gear, or imaging with all sorts of gear, including Canon? No need to answer, just demonstrate that the conditions are very rubbery and can be interpreted with much latitude.

I'd relax a bit about the whole thing, and think this is more for Canon internal justification of the program rather than true gate-keeping. i just keep Ag, though would qualify for Pt, and that even with only bare minimum of Canon gear. Mostly Zeiss and even more esoteric stuff (Coastal Optics). Much of my professional/academic imaging does not use a single piece of Canon gear.

Lens Rentals Teardown of new 70-200 f/2.8 IS III & comparison with Mk. II

Thanks for posting this. As a previously happy owner of an EF 70-200 f/4L IS, EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS ll and an EF 100-400 L IS, I have been feeling a bit downtrodden lately since 3 of my favorite lenses have recently become "old." It is heartening to see that one of my favs still has some life left in it. Granted, a new paint job would be welcome, since pounding tent stakes and beef steaks has taken its toll, but optically the lens is still magnificent. It's nice to see that it hasn't been left behind...
