Has anyone used this combination here? I am strongly suspecting that the AF coverage relative to the frame will be fairly poor, given the already poor coverage on the 6D II will all AF points active, however I wanted to make sure that this wasn't a known "lemon" of a pairing. I have been able to find precious little in terms of actual discussion of this pairing, just a lot of legacy chatter about the original 6D.

I have not used the version 1 of 100-400, nor the 6D MkII, however, I use the 100-400 LII and the 1.4x TC III on my 5dMkIII and 5DMkIV on a regular basis. I have gotten good results handheld at 1/2000 + f/10 with Auto ISO (100-1600 on 7DmkII and 100-6400 on 5DMkIV). However, if I need to go slower or wider on the aperture, I use my gimball. So far I am happy.

I have a friend landscape photographer, prints LARGE and switched from Hasselblad to Phase one several years ago. Has yet to look back. IN fact he is trying (teasing) me to switch. Phase One at ~1 FPS is not a great wildlife camera

some more Mavic 2 Pro smaller samples.

Today is August 29 and lens was supposed to start shipping from manufacturer yesterday (August 28). I just checked Adorama and they have revised their window which now reads item will start shipping from manufacturer August 30.

I would love a new 50mm

One of my all time fave FLs but for me to buy it it would have to have

-IS
-Not wheigh a ton i.e. not f1.2 etc
-be ultra sharp and have blue whatsit coating thingy

The current camera has few weaknesses but the obvious ones are better low light performance and better dynamic range. Canon will likely make the AF & metering changes it added to the 5D MKIV but these are minor. I shoot with my 5DS mainly in the studio with strobes a faster sync speed would be handy but not a deal breaker given I can shoot HS with my Elinchrom strobes. The frame rate for some should come into line with the 5D MKIV and utilise a bigger buffer. Lastly Wi-Fi needs to be incorporated along with NFC.

Nikon just added an alternative... good for them... I would love to see a 500F5.6 out of Canon, perhaps this will push then a bit....

The D500 is far superior to the 7D2 in terms of AF and has a superior sensor, which is why we need a 7DIII. It doesn’t stop us taking great photos but you should see what Arbitrage can do with the D500 and 300/4 PF capturing birds in flight that I can only dream about see: https://www.flickr.com/photos/100907765@N08/

The Nikon MILCs surely look attractive. I'd call for caution, tough - A couple of years from now, CaNikon are likely head-to-head independent how these first releases look like. Then, the Nikon MILCs are also nice products (as are Nikon DSLR). Tough one.

The Red Bull Cliff Diving competition guested Copenhagen again this past weekend. Each of the 12 divers would make 4 jumps from the top of the Opera house 27 meters down into the harbour.

First image show the harbour & Opera house from my shooting point (24-70/2.8, shot at 70mm).

It takes the divers about 3 seconds from they jump off the platform until they hit the surface of the water at 85kph (almost 53mph for the metrically challenged) - check the second image.

The day was rather cloudy and pretty windy, with the wind playing a bit of havoc on the divers preparations.

Compared to last time in 2016 (link), I used a 1Dx and rented a 600mm Mk II lens (vs 5D3 + 300 Mk II) together with my 2x TC Mk III. I didn't have the opportunity to AFMA the lens+TC to the body, but I from looking at the images, it wasn't far off (and any problems was more on my side that the technical side). The images came out quite 'flat' so I had to massage them a bit and add + 2-3 in saturation and some USM sharpening to make the images look attractive.

I was shooting across the harbour, so from 180-200 meters away (and ~26m below the platform). I'm not sure of the desaturated images are due to the 600+2xTC combo, the distance to the subjects or both.

I hadn't checked what the 1200 f/8 vs 600 f/5.6 would do to the DOF, and this caught me a bit out I think wrt sharpness. With the '16 setup I had a DOF of ~31 meters, whereas the 1200mm setup has just 11 meters of DOF.

For those who have shot with the 600 MkII + 2xTC III combo, what are your experience here? (paging Dr @Neuro)


PS: Gary Hunt (UK) won again this year (he has won all three times RBCD has visiting Copenhagen). Michal Navratil had to cancel as his wife had gone into labor with their first baby.

Supporting the extra thickness required for the EF (FF) lens means Canon may be able to include 2 card slots and bigger battery. This is a trade off I would gladly make

I have seen this product and me personaly wasnt impressed. Before Godox AD200 this would be amazing thing, but nowdays 1 AD200 is both strobe and speedlite, does all that this magmod modifier does, but cheaper and better, because you can use S-bracket to attach other modifiers like real softbox umbrellas and list goes on and on. Also keep in mind that AD200 with s- bracket, lightstand and godox modifier (either softbox, octabox, umbrella or even beauty dish) is actually cheaper then single 600EX or SB910.

Now im not brand bound or Godox fanboi, but im talking from price and practicality standpoint.

Magmod is too late and also really expensive for what its offering.

I hope Nikon, Canon, Sony, Fuji, etc. read and carefully consider what Olympus managed to accomplish two years ago. This is a like a recipe of what to do well and where to improve.

Then they should attempt their best at accomplishing that with a larger sensor. I think Sony's done pretty well with their latest generation of bodies but I can't say I'm stoked about anything from the two big players yet. I'd certainly like to see Nikon seriously tweak up the performance and features of their Z system ASAP.

I use my 5D4 and my SL2 primarily in live view mode, where AF is plenty fast for most of my subjects. It really works well foir lenses with TC's where there is little light available.

Canon has been working very hard to improve DPAF, so it will be up to the task. However, don't expect it to match PDAF, just like Nikon and Sony, AF will be not quite as good as a low end Canon DSLR.

DPAF tracking has greatly improved as well, I prefer it to PD tracking except for sports or bif where speed wins out.

Overall, a mirrorless camera from Canon or anyone else is going to be a case of "almost as good as" when compared to a similarly priced DSLR. Small size attracts some users, but not in the USA. I think that Canon is big enough and has such a huge customer base that they can offer a full sized EF compatible mirrorless as well as a compact one with a new lens series and small consumer / prosumer lenses. Don't expect "L" lenses for the small version unless it displaces the larger bodies. The biggest market for small mirrorless cameras is Asia, and price is a big factor there.

That's not a bad idea... I may have to try that.

Likewise for Sony, although I don't think it's using in-lens stabilization to augment IBIS for a combined 5 axes. Rather, the camera needs to know focal length and subject distance for full support, and not all lenses can provide that data.

Here is some pertinent information:

“It needs focal length and focal distance to provide the correct image stabilization,” [Sony's Mark] Weir said. “This is standard with everyone’s system as far as we understand it.”

However, the way that it works is totally different for lenses that can communicate with the camera and those that cannot.

“If the lens can communicate the information to the system and the system can understand it, then the system can provide all of the stabilization information,” said Mr. Weir. “In the case that the lens does not provide electronic communication, the user can manually enter in the focal length.”

But in that case, the camera can still only have the focal length input, and not the focal distance–which has to do with how far away from the sensor the lens is. From the focal length information, it can figure out the right amount of pitch and yaw to provide. However, roll compensation doesn’t require any information from the lens because it is always available. Roll compensation is all based on how the user moves the camera around as you can see in the graph above.

“The behavior of the system is largely dependent on the lens. The lens bears a responsibility if it’s going to enjoy five axis stabilization. Repeat, NOT a rangefinder in the classic sense.

Just the shape is clearly reminiscent of those marvelous cameras of old...but just reminiscent, not a copy.

Although, when one considers how DPAF works, it is the electronic equivalent of the opto-mechnical split image rangefinder.

And that split image is a very effective tool for presenting in and out of focus. It wouldn't be a bad paradigm for presentation in the EVF.

Well, I think this is a discussion about nothing. DPAF is - like any version of phase detection AF - of course based on the rangefinder principle (trigonometry). So you could call all (D)SLRs and Canon's new DPAF sensor systems "rangefinder", but in fact, it doesn't tell anything. You also could call any camera a pinhole camera or camera obscura, because all modern cameras are descendants of this basic principle. But "pinhole" doesn't sound fancy, "rangefinder" does (again).

Nice. I hope Tamron continues to develop reasonably sized prime lenses. I love some of the new Sigma lenses (like this 105), but they are too big to just throw in the bag and bring along.

This past weekend I was thankful for dual card slots. The first day of a shoot I hit 845 photos. Not a problem. Uploaded all of them (about 24GB). Second day I filled my 64GB CF card, then formatted my SD card to continue shooting in RAW. I really should get another CF card, but never anticipated ever filling it. Dual cards are now a must for me, especially now that I might start making money with my camera. Hopefully at least enough $$$$ to fund a new body in 2020 and some extra glass, etc. Still just a hobby.
