Issue Discovered With The EOS 5D Mark IV, Firmware Fix Coming

You need to turn on the daylight time symbol in the Date/Time/Zone menu in the camera. It looks like a Sun symbol. Just setting the time ahead 1 hour is not the same thing.

Yup, after updating to the latest version of EOS Utility (I was on 3.7, and 3.8 came out in February) and having the problem again, I just noticed the box to the left of the time zone, and wondered what it was for. DST right there.

User error.
Good that you found the solution. I suppose it is the same as I mentioned before:

I also assume that you have the summer / winter time switch in the right position.

Another way would have been to deactivate time sync in EOS utility.
But if it works now, that's fine :)

What a Full Frame Canon Mirrorless Needs To Have To Be Successful

Piko-fr said:
I think that keeping the EF mount and especially using the Canon EOS lenses with the mirrorless Canon is not possible. The lens-to-sensor distance of a mirrorless camera is less than the lens-to-sensor distance of DSLRs. So for the future Nikon or Canon, the use of an "old" lens will need an adapter.

The flange back distance from lens to sensor can be whatever the manufacturer wants. Current mirrorless designs take advantage of the lack of need to provide clearance for a moving mirror and make the camera smaller. This is popular in some markets, not so popular in others. The point is that being mirrorless does not mean a lens must be closer, that causes lots of design issues, particularly at the edges of the sensor due to the angle that light rays strike.

Lens decision: Canon 100mm 2.8 L or non L Macro vs Sigma 85mm 1.4 ex

pdirestajr said:
My opinion is you will rarely use a 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens indoors on a crop sensor to photograph your baby. You'd shoot the hands and feet and some bubbles on the lips then be done with it. It's just too tight and slow. Focus will hunt indoors too. Once your baby is more mobile, it will struggle to keep up.

I personally love being close to my kids when photographing them, as my style is to be engaged with them playing to capture natural moments. The 35mm f/2 lens on a 7D body is great. Also the Sigma 18-35 1.8 is awesome in covering the "best" focal lengths on a crop body to engage with your kids. They both have really short minimum focusing distances too, so are super versatile for close up shots and full scene shots.

Very nice photos!

Store multiple custom WB in 5D2?

Registering custom user settings to C1, 2 and 3 should do it. I think the white balance compensation for AWB doesn't save, but that could be my own misuse of it. Manual white balance does save to each C1/2/3 setting.

Just remember that C1/2/3 will save everything else about how the camera is set up, too. So if you only want to have them store different white balances then make sure to put every other setting to a neutral position.

However, as recently as yesterday, I was getting ads that took over the browser on my iPad, and wouldn't let me get back to the board content. So I just closed the tab and waited until I was using the computer to read this board. I don't have the problem on my Mac.

I get that on my iphone too. Almost like the web server has some malware or something.

There's no issue with CR or malware on the server, this is a problem with ad networks and seems to affect iOS/Safari far more than any other OS/Browser combination. Though Android/Chrome aren't immune.

I have seen similar things on Yahoo.com, CNN.com and other big sites.

Ad networks are working on this and hopefully it'll become a thing of the past soon.

Ok thanks. As a bandaid, I just start loading a page on my phone and hit stop loading when it gets to a point I can read what I need to. That stops it from loading the ads and redirecting the site.

Interesting idea.

I wish this nonsense wasn't going on.

Do you come to the site directly, or through social media?

Directly. You are a bookmark in my iphone on safari. If I'm away from my computer for too long I start feeling the need to catch up on anything new here ;)

I have a hard time imagining buying any lens without IS, irrespective of FL :-)

Not once have I thought 'If only this 135L had IS' Not once. Maybe it's because I have shot longer without the feature than with. YMMV

As long as I've had a drink I don't shake too bad. ;)

Tamron 18-400mm VC HLD Review | Dustin

I looked at another copy of the Tamron 18-400mm today as my local shop had a new copy. Same focus breathing as before - focal length at a nominal 400mm was 320mm at 12m. Unfortunately, the IQ of this one was very poor at the centre and complete garbage at the edges of the M5.

Interesting.... sounds like an extreme amount of copy variation....

When I looked at the ephotozine article, the sharphness and chromatic aberration at 400mm were insanely bad... I wonder what the next review will show?

I have found my old files on the first 18-400 I tested. It was a good lens, much better than this new copy. ePhotozine had a poor copy whereas the Lenstip one seems better.
That makes me very nervous. The three section barrel may be a bit to complex to be accurate. Makes me wonder how robust the lens is, and how will it tolerate wear on that mechanism.....

Patent: Canon 24-70 f/2.8 Optical Formula and More

Focal distance 36.10
F number 2.92
Half field angle 20.73
image height 13.66
Whole length 98.76
BF 35.46

With an image height of 13.66mm, this 35mm lens is an APS-C lens.
The back focus indicates it is for a DSLR.
Therefore this is likely an EF-S mount 35/2.8 lens.

Focal distance 18.56 48.87 145.41
F number 3.60 5.56 6.49
a half field angle -- 36.35 15.62 5.37
Image height 13.66 13.66 13.66
Whole length 103.26 118.62 145.33
BF 10.65 10.65 10.65

Again, 13.66mm means the 18-145 is an APS-C lens.
The BF is for mirrorless.
Therefore likely EF-M mount 18-145/3.5-6.3.

Focal distance 24.76 30.10 67.98
F number 2.92 2.92 2.91
a half field angle -- 41.15 35.71 17.65
Image height 21.64 21.64 21.64
Whole length 198.84 183.00 165.88
BF 38.37 38.37 38.37

The 24-70 is a FF lens (21.64mm image height)
The BF indicates this is for a DSLR.
Therefore likely EF mount 24-70/2.8.

Focal distance 11.33 15.16 21.84
F number 4.10 4.65 5.72
a half field angle-- 50.33 42.03 32.02
Image height 13.66 13.66 13.66
Whole length 88.44 85.64 87.26
BF 9.00 14.02 22.72

The 11-22 is an APS-C lens (13.66mm).
It is more mirrorless (BF is too short for a DSLR).
Therefore likely EF-M mount 11-22/4-5.6.

DPReview Interview With Canon Execs, \

The excitement for Canon cameras is being threatened and I fear it may go the same way the iphone did; i.e. staying relevant but being completely overtaken by the competition https://cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/6581377/meeker-2016-ios-android.jpg

So the operating system only installed in single manufacturer’s phones is less used than a free operating system found in practically every other manufacturer’s phones? Shocking.

It’s hard to draw the parallel to canon.

Of all the ones I've used the 55/1.8 is my favourite, especially the ones with radioactive elements. It's somehow soft and sharp at the same time.

Had no idea. Thanks! BTW: You are incredibly good. Checked out your links.

DJI Phantom 5 Drone To Have Interchangeable Lenses?

What would be a game changer would be the ability to zoom remotely.

I might be relatively new to this drone stuff but I can't, at this point, see much utility to a zoom. I'm sure higher end users might but they should be in the Inspire range, as a minimum, anyway so they already have lens choices.

The utility comes from being able to choose position (thus perspective) and then crop appropriately.

The range need not be great but a 2x or 3x would be very useful.

I'd think that would be accomplished more easily with a higher resolution sensor and cropping. Don't get me wrong I have a decent amount of real estate experience where the position is the most important aspect of the shot, but a zoom seems to me a touch redundant for what we are using drones for especially when we can get 20 MP resolution stills already.

Does Picture Style affect how image looks on the rear screen?

My understanding is Faithful is the colour the sensor sees with no adjustments made to compensate for any tint or bias the sensor might have. Neutral takes into account the sensor's different sensitivities and adjusts the colour to try to match what the human eye sees. I think the idea is Faithful is for people who would rather fix the camera's colour themselves and Neutral is for people who are happy to trust Canon to judge the basic adjustments for them.

Either way, the way Lightroom handles the colour profiles is different to the in-camera profiles, and so for judging how a raw file will look the Neutral profile is more accurate to the file you'll actually be working with. I've checked this against correction profiles made with a colorchecker and it was consistent under tungsten, fluorescent, and day light. Lightroom's Neutral is closer to what a colorchecker profile gives you in hue, saturation, and contrast, while Lightroom's Faithful has a little more contrast between green hues and a little less between skin tones compared to what a colorchecker profile makes. Lightroom's Neutral profile for Canon raw is really neutral.

But it's definitely the smallest difference and I only make the distinction for jobs where I've been specifically asked to deliver a really even, accurate file. I think in most cases you're best off judging colour and contrast on a photo-by-photo basis.

Trying to decide between this and the Samyang 12mm f/2 lens for astrophography. Both seem equally awesome!

The Rokinon 12mm f/2 is terrific for astro on my M5! I can't comment on the Laowa.

5d Mikv focus - lens microadjustment - always off

It sounds like there might be a fault with the autofocus on your 5D mk4. I have both the 5D mk4 and the 5D mk3 and the focussing on the mk4 is significantly better than on the mk3. This is partly because my mk3 tends to front focus, but also the mk4 focusses more quickly especially when the light is poor.
I suggest you take it back to the shop where you bought it, or ask Canon to check it as it does not seem to be performing correctly.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED Review

ePhotozine has reviewed the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED. Although they give it a rave review for IQ, it is obvious that there is a dramatic drop in MTF on going from 300-400mm
https://www.ephotozine.com/article/nikon-af-s-nikkor-180-400mm-f-4e-tc1-4-fl-ed-review-32085
and the resolution on an 850 is poorer at 400mm than is that of the Tamron 100-400mm in the centre on a 5DSR.
https://www.ephotozine.com/article/tamron-100-400mm-f-4-5-6-3-di-vc-usd-lens-review-31750
No doubt it has advantages of f-stop and AF, but not the IQ you would expect from such a pricey beast.

Canon EOS M50, More Images and Specifications

Talys said:
I would go to a camera store and ask to demo one :) Then just try out the AF tracking and drive mode, and see if they are to your liking.

I can't recall what the specs said, but it sounded pretty impressive in that regard.

Yeah, I usually do. Some stores have been weird about allowing me to insert my own memory card though. And test shots while tethered to the display counter haven't been a very good indicator of real-world use for me unfortunately. I'll definitely wait to hear user reports though, particularly over any claims of it being "sluggish". Hopefully an M5 follow-up will shortly follow.
