I only buy gear with USB C connectors. Just for its single, greatest advantage: it plugs in either way. With old USB connectors there is a 50:50 chance to get it right

yeah because looking at the connector first is so hard. ::)

I still get it wrong about 80% of the time, it seems.

exactly. from usability point of view any "non-symmetrical connector" is a sub-par design from the very start. USB-C is a step forward .. silver medal. Round/cylindrical connectors ... gold! 8)

Canon G1X mk III vs Canon G7x mk II

Interesting comparison. I travel with my G7X II. I wouldn't want to try to squeeze anything bigger into my pants pocket, so it's good to see that I'm not giving up much of anything meaningful for my purposes by using the cheaper and smaller choice. I've used this camera for 15 or so months, including trips to the Rockies, southern coastal cities, Pittsburgh, Britain, Hawaii, and Southern California. I've been quite pleased with the results. 13" x 19" prints look great. I hope I have shots from Hawaii that will make a nice panorama to print out on roll paper to frame and hang in my front room that has a somewhat islandy décor.

This replaced the S120 that fit in my shirt pocket and zoomed to 120mm equivalent, but has a smaller sensor. The G7X II has enough more pixels to crop a 100mm shot to the S120's 120mm picture size with pixels to spare, so no real loss.

Patent: Multi Level Sensor With Photo-Luminescent Component

That is an interesting idea. It wouldn't improve the high ISO performance, but definitely dramatically increase the saturation level of the pixel and, in turn, dynamic range of the pixel output.
An interesting thing would be also to try to remove the color filter from the pixel, so that the upper part of the pixel register the whole spectrum of light and delivers the luminosity information, the fluorescence layer would instead contain specific fluorophore excited only by red, green or blue light with Bayer pattern through the sensor. This way each pixel would deliver overalls luminosity information and specific color information, like normal sensor. But color sensitivity would be probably rather poor...

DJI Introduces Mavic Air For Limitless Exploration Wherever Adventure Takes You

Still sub-optimal for photography. Sure. But thinking this through, I doubt a 1" sensor will make it into the price range that I am willing to spend on a drone any time soon.

I am not going to pre-order, but I am 95% convinced I'll be buying this drone come April/May.

If I fall in love with it, then maybe I drop bigger money in a couple of years. Sort of like buying an entry level camera to see if you like photography enough to splurge on a FF sensor and a whole bunch of "L" glass.....

Patent: Stacked Sensor Patents Continue to Stack Up

I think the only downside to a stacked RGB sensor from Canon is that it would almost certainly require a new RAW file format (CR3 as it were). Sampling color data at every pixel location will be a huge benefit, even if initial models only have a max usable ISO of 6400 and 11-12 stops of DR; that would still be leaps and bounds better than Sigma's Quattro X3 Foveon.

And let's not forget the sharpness benefits that Foveon demonstrated. It's been routinely stated that the Foveon's are equivalent to a Bayer with twice as many pixels in spatial resolution in terms of detail.

it's not that kind of stacked sensor.

Would you care to elaborate? What is the purpose of the stacked sensor, if it isn’t to drop the bayer?

I had a Sigma DP Merrill a few years ago. It had a lot of weaknesses, but resolution was insanely good for a “15 megapixel” camera.

one substrate for photodiodes, the other substrate for processing. same as what is in the A9 from Sony.

New Battery for 1DX M2

I found this old thread... has anyone tried to charge a LP-E19 battery on an LC-E4 charger?

I am looking for a spare charger for my 1DXII, and is hoping to get away with a pre used “1DX charger”, as the LC-E19 charger is crazy expensive.

As Privatbodydesign claimed, I read Rudy Winston so that older chargers would work, but not for a full charge on the newer LP-E19 batteries, but the CPS answer expatinasia had received leaves me with less hope...

Thank you for clarifying! Too bad, but I didn’t have to learn the hard way.

I tried and neither charger nor battery fitted in either of the others. That is the LC-E19 could not charge the LP-E4 batteries and the LC-E4 could not charge the LP-E19 batteries. However the AC Adapter Kit ACK-E4 from the earlier models does fit and work in the 1DX MkII.

I was very surprised by this misinformation from senior Canon personnel, but there are notches on the chargers that prevent the 'wrong' batteries fitting.

I think it's worth noting that whenever you look at sidelines at professional sporting events, the number of little camera bodies is zero (and obviously, the number of little camera lenses is zero). Even at a football game, when you see press photographers reaching out over the crowd to snap some pictures, those second bodies with wider lenses are full sized DSLRs with full sized hotshoe flashes attached. At major political events, same thing. I think this is a pretty important demographic for Canon.

Agree 100% on sports, but I actually have seen the reportage photogs supporting political figures starting to dabble with Sony rigs. Can't tell which one they are using, of course ::), but I have to believe that a truly silent shutter (in committee meetings, especially) and a next to zero need for big superwhites has something to do with it. In theory, in this arena of photography, Sony is far less behind than they are in sports.

(Checks to see what the award winning photo of the assassination of the Russian ambassador in Turkey was taken on... and it was a 5D3. Just curious.)

- A

Just goes to show you the 5D3 is still a great camera :D

This photo is actually good enough to see what kind of cameras the photographers are using, in a Me_Me_Me-era photo (eg within the last year) (UPDATE... ROFL... president orange's name was replaced with Me_Me_Me by the forum... I LOVE IT). You're right, there's one at the bottom with a Sony! Nearly all of the cameras that are being used are Canons, with interesting choices for second cameras they have on their neck.

Another thing that you can see is that with professional press photographers/videographers, size and weight are just not at the priority when it comes to what they use, even when the subject is as close as they could possibly be:

As a bit of an aside, the guy at the front of the first photo is pretty much why I wish Canon would put a flip screen on the 5d line, even a tilting.

But really, what a silly thing. Nobody needs that many photos of a press conference, much less someone putting a nameplate down.

New EF-M Prime Likely Coming Ahead of CP+ [CR2]

There is no denying that an ultra-compact, short portrait-tele is sorely missing in Canon's EF-M lens lineup. Enough choice for ultra-wideangle and wide-angle lenses and f/6.3 zooms, but no native lens above 22mm faster than f/5.6 ... it sucks!
It's also incorrect, there is the 28mm f3.5.

thx for correction! Forget that Macro thing ...

does not really change lamentable situation however. Lots of wide-angle stuff and (compact, slow) zooms, but no normal and tele focal lengths of even moderate speed available.

Even that 28/3.5 macro .. why not an EF-M 60/3.5 IS STM Macro ... ? In a pinch i would have gotten that one as long as no EF-M 85/2.4 IS STM is available.

Well, a 28mm crop is equivalent to 44.8 FF, which is in the normal range as far as I am concerned. Not very fast, but still normal.

FOV wise yes ... but it still does not replace the 135mm equivalent FOV i am after ;-)

FORTUNE Magazine Places Canon Among “World’s Most Admired Companies” for 2018

Interesting list. Some notables:

Sony is ranked #6 in Electronics.
Fuji is #6 in Computers.
Nikon, Olympus, and Panasonic don't make the cut.

Apple is #1 overall and #1 in computers
Amazon is #2 overall , which also edges out Google (Alphabet) for the top spot in Internet Services and Retailing
Microsoft is #7 overall, and #1 in Computer Software
Adobe as #3 in that Computer Software (behind Salesforce)

In the category that Canon is placed (Computers), the rankings of #1-8, in order, are:
Apple, Dell, Xerox, Canon, HP, Fuji, Asus, Western Digital

In the category that Sony is placed (Electronics), the rankings of #1-8, in order, are:
Honeywell, Samsung, Eaton, TE Connectivity, Schneider, Sony, LG

By the way, I want a Canon computer. It would be slower and be a couple of years behind in the latest features, but it would be super-duper-reliable, never break, and easy to use for hours at a stretch :D

New EF-M Prime Lens Pushed Later Into 2018 [CR3]

I'd like to see a 32 f/2.0 to be equivalent to 50 mm on full frame, however the recent ef-s 35 f/2.8 and the existing ef-m 22 and 28 make me wonder if it would not be a longer lens.

My money is on a 50 or 60mm.

Sony has a 50mm 1.8 that seems to be well liked by E mount fans, I could see Canon following suit.

DJI Teases New Drone, Coming January 23, 2018

Waiting too see. A Mavic Pro 2 would be very tempting. Anyone got a Mavic or Phantom 4?
What do you make of it as a camera?

I tried out all the DJI consumer drones and although they're great for video, the stills quality is absolutely shocking and I mean really, really, really bad.
If you're going to put some photos on Instagram or something then they're ok, but for anything else forget it.
I ended up getting an S1000 to get the 5DIII into the air.

Tony Northrup´s rumors for 2018....

I don't watch hi videos because it takes a lot of energy to not comment back to him - which is what they want.

There is about a 0% chance we see a full-frame mirrorless camera called the M3 - a camera name already used...so it's great to see he did his research. BUT, I have always thought that they should make the EF-mount be included via removable adapter and, once removed, could accept EOS-M lenses in a crop mode. This would help drive development of the M-mount as well as insure that we see the new camera retain the ability to adapt vintage lenses. A big fear of mine is that if a mirrorless camera comes out that accepts EF lenses, it means the longer flange distance will not allow it to have the benefits of mounting other glass on it.

Canon EF 22-55mm f/4-5.6 USM

Fourteen years ago, I was an a film shooter avid to reach a wider angle of view and without resources to buy the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L, 16-35 f/2.8L, 20-35mm f/2.8L or even the 20-35mm f/3.5-4.5, then I discovered that although the Canon EF 22-55mm f/4-5.6 had been designed for the APS cameras, I could use it with a 35mm camera. I looked for one for over a year and when I bought it, it was a real joy. I could make images of large buildings and interiors. It was one of the lenses which made me love photography. I used mine from 2004 (with film cameras) to 2008 (when I bough the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5). It was a great lens for me.

Sony Completes Pro Memory Card Line-up With New CFast Range

Checked their price and they are more expensive the Sandisk on the 64GB size.

That doesn't seem like a winning strategy! Personally, I've been with Sandisk since 2003, and if I was going to change brands on memory cards, it would need to be somewhat cheaper to tempt me to try, rather than more expensive.

Agreed. I have tried Lexar cards and based upon a few cards, I don't see much if any difference. Informal observation is that Lexar cards have a bit more problems in Canon cameras than Sandisk.

Plus if Canon hands out Sandisk CFast card and reader with the 1Dx M2, they must be fairly good.
