Throughout my Canon days I kept a $6 pair of Optech rainsleeves in my bag - they cope with tropical rain. I have them available for my Sony a7r3 should the need arise.

I carry an umbrella on "iffy" days... Even though I know my gear is well sealed, it makes me feel better.....

I live in Vancouver. Three quarters of the year, I have an umbrella with me :D

Off Brand: Leica Camera Unveils New Prime Lenses for the Leica SL-System

HTML:
While I wait for a new Leica S body with an 80mp sensor, Leica continues to add to the SL system.</p>
<p><em>The new APO-Summicron-SL 75 mm f/2 ASPH and APO-Summicron SL 90 mm f/2 ASPH lenses embody superior performance and the finest engineering in compact designs</em></p>
<p><strong>January 15, 2018</strong> – Today, Leica Camera announces the first two editions of a new line of high-performance Summicron-SL lenses for the Leica SL-System; the APO-Summicron-SL 75 mm f/2 ASPH. and the APO-Summicron-SL 90 mm f/2 ASPH. that will be available in February for photographers across the country. Both lenses seamlessly work with the SL-System’s lightning-fast autofocus and, as with all SL-Lenses, have been designed and constructed in Germany with exceptional materials for a long work life, even withstanding the rigors of professional use while always providing superior image quality.</p>
<p><!--more-->

The focal lengths of these two SL-Lenses are ideal for all types of photography, and truly shine when used for portraiture. While the APO-Summicron-SL 75 mm f/2 ASPH., for example, captures exceptional natural portraits, the APO-Summicron-SL 90 mm f/2 ASPH. is a classic telephoto focal length for portraits with the often sought-after compression between the subject and background, ultimately creating the ideal aesthetic for exquisite pictures of people. Another great feature of these new lenses is their fast and silent autofocusing, meaning the photographer does not have to wait to take the perfect shot to quickly capture their subject’s best look, even for a moment.</p>
<p>Both the construction and design of the new, cutting-edge Summicron-SL line represent the continuing innovation in the development of lenses for the Leica SL-System. State-of-the-art, extremely precise manufacturing methods and measuring technologies were developed specifically for the production of these lenses. The results of these developments are reflected not only in the more compact dimensions and considerably lower weight of the lenses, allowing for greater portability, but also in their excellent imaging performance. As the Leica SL-System continues to evolve with new capabilities and lens options, the addition of these two primes further round out the Leica SL native lens selection, which now encompasses two zoom lenses and three prime lenses. Current Leica SL customers continue to receive new lens options at their disposal that can bolster their current capabilities, and new users have more selection than ever before.</p>

<p>Additionally, these lenses feature a new, faster autofocus system, as well as a considerably shorter close focusing limit for tight portraits of their subjects. The autofocus drive of all Summicron-SL lenses employs extremely powerful and robust stepping motors with DSD® (Dual Syncro Drive™). Thanks to this advanced focusing drive, the entire focusing range can be fully travelled in only around 250 milliseconds, providing photographers the confidence that they will always be able to instantaneously capture their subjects in crystal-clear sharp focus.</p>
<p>As both Summicron-SL primes deliver extremely high imaging performance at their largest f/2 aperture, the lenses are also ideal for photography in low-light or difficult lighting conditions. The Leica promise of ‘maximum aperture is a usable aperture’ also applies to the new SL-Lenses. Users can rest assured that their lens is capable of creating a tack-sharp photograph in any situation. Meticulous attention was paid to the prevention of stray light and reflections in the construction of the APO-Summicron-SL lenses. Together with optimizing the optical and mechanical design, the application of high-quality coatings to each lens surface reduces unavoidable reflections to an absolute minimum. Thus, photographers get a lens that always creates images with beautifully strong contrast, where other lenses may suffer from distracting flares and ghosting effects that detract from the photo.</p>
<p>All glass elements in any optical imaging system, including camera lenses, can sometimes refract certain colors of light at different lengths. Thus, not all rays of light from a multi-colored subject are always focused at the same point – the result of this imperfection is chromatic aberration, also known as color fringing. In order to reduce chromatic aberration to a hardly perceptible minimum, both new Summicron-SL lenses are Apochromatic, or in short, APO, corrected, allowing photographers to capture photos in high contrast situations without a distracting purple or green outline along backlit subjects. Further supporting this optical achievement, most of the eleven elements of the optical system, one of which is aspherical, feature anomalous partial dispersion and are manufactured from sensitive and specially formulated, high-quality glass. Without all of these state-of-the-art lens corrections, images could suffer from fringing, flares, ghosting or distortion. These incredibly well-corrected glass optics are what make a Leica lens special and so crystal clear.</p>
<p>The APO-Summicron-SL 75 mm f/2 ASPH. and the APO-Summicron-SL 90 mm f/2 ASPH. will be available in February. Both can be purchased at Leica Stores, Boutiques and Dealers. In the second half of 2018, the SL-System will even further increase its prime lens arsenal with the launch of a Summicron-SL 35 mm f/2 ASPH. and APO-Summicron-SL 50 mm f/2 ASPH.</p>

B&H Canadian Shipping “Fast & Easy” Customs Problems

The package was shipped USPS and delivered through Canada Post.
The issue is I see no indication on the customs forms that anything special was done at all. It really looks like they’re just taking people’s money for nothing.

I sent an e-mail to CS with the B&H internal website system but I’m not sure if the e-mail actually made it to them, or if it’s just the holiday rush delaying things.
I guess I should probably call them and make sure to get an answer before too much time passes.

Yes, it always makes sense to contact a company first, especially one with very responsive customer service. Not understanding the issue and then going to online forums to shout "scam" makes no sense (for people without an agenda).

Canon Concept Cameras Brought to CES 2018

They’d sell more printers if they were easier to calibrate and better size ink tanks and didn’t weigh a ton. Proper printing is stupidly complex. (Adobe don’t help in this regard either)

While I agree inks are a sore point (it looks French authorities are investigating it, as printers "planned obsolescence) - your other complaints often are due to physical and engineering needs. For example, a printer has not to jump around while the printer heads changes direction so quickly (or you would need to bolt it to the table), and the paper handling mechanism needs to be precise and sturdy.

Calibration procedures has to cope with the many different monitors, inks and papers available. It's quite automatic today. Even when you use the printer's ICC profiles for its known papers you can get good result.

And unless monitors, inks and papers are fully standardized and made with the same specs, there's little to do, and anyway, you're moving your images between very different ways of displaying them. Maybe AI one day will take care of the whole process - just it will be the result it thinks it is best, not what you think. Transforming a source image into a print is a process where the photographer has a role - it may not be just a "you press the button, we do the rest".

Lens Rentals have posted a Canon 85mm f/1.4 L IS comparison

It looks like one of the best lens releases by Canon in a long time. Great spec, features, an intelligent balance of image qualities and ... unusually for Canon these days, a not unreasonable price.

I have the 85 f1.2 L II but would still consider this were I still investing in Canon gear. I think its really cool that the old lens remains available (for now, but one assumes production will cease) because it does have a beautiful look to it, if you can deal with the CA and other downsides.

Canon still rules when it comes to making consistently well made, well designed and functionally superb lenses. They may not be innovating much on the bodies side of things, but lenses like this new f1.4 L IS will keep some twitchy people in the Canon fold, for sure.

Canon Italy Responds to Social Media Composite Photograph Backlash

Hi Folks.
The way I see this, someone needs to be fired for this, not for making the mistake, that would be cruel who has not slipped up occasionally.
They should be fired for not taking responsibility, for not putting their hand up and saying oops I’m sorry and removing the offending item, for digging in and making excuses, for not knowing that when you are so far down the hole you can’t see anything but sky it is time to digging! ::)

My tuppence and probably overvalued at that! :)

Cheers, Graham.

Canon has nothing to compete with the GH5s with the video specs it has and the price point. Nothing. It AFs better than the GH5 too. If you question the quality of the video it produces, then go look at the YT vids of which there are many. I am a Canon guy and I have many Canon cameras and camcorders, so don't consider me a troll. I will say it again, Canon has nothing to compete with it. I wish they did. Go look at the GH5s specs.

So I assume you'll buy one. Please report back how you like it.

So mirrorless is the only definition of innovation? What a small world you live in.

They have no idea what innovation is. They just know they want it. Like Brondo, innovation has electrolytes.

Your current camera has 175 pixels/mm. EOS 1D X has 144 and mark II 152 so you probably lose detail EOS 7D Mark II might be better. It has pixel density of 244 pixels/mm.

I would say IQ is more than photo sites/mm. The quality of the photosites matter

Yes. Seems obvious but I guess it is not.

Hasselblad H6D-100c vs. Sony AR7II by Karl Taylor

What's up with the obviously different contrast curve? How on earth do you lose hight detail in a piece of cloth with an A7rII? Why are most colours warmer in the Sony pictures? Why start comparison at an aperture where the 35mm camera will be disadvantaged by diffraction when you refuse to stop down the medium format camera to get an equivalent dof with the argument that it makes the image softer due to diffraction. Why talk about "a finger grain structure" on a fixed pixel pitch image sensor with 2.5 times the resolution?

All in all, if I wanted to rig a test in favour of the Hasselblad, I'd do something similar.

Photo Contest Help

I sure hope the specification of file size being between four millibit and 15 millibit was a typo.

Let me send in a few 300x450 pixel files "compressed" to 10MB size, with some embedded metadata stating that they are 1"x1½" in size, that is... 300dpi. No problemos!

No, you can't specify a lowest file size for a compressed file and assume that'd say anything about the quality. That is insane. I've got lots of files at under a megabyte that look fantastic blown up big and several files over 10MB that just look ugly if you print them larger than postcard-sized because of all the distracting fine detail.

I would specify a list of acceptable file formats, a minimum expected pixel dimension of about 2400x3600 and a warning that too much compression or low number of pixels will cause the prints to look bad, lowering the chances of winning. Possibly also a line on any technical restriction in maximum file size accepted for submissions, eg "no larger than 100MB per file".

Using stock assets is completely standard, especially for branches of a company away from the main offices. Canon have done it for years. So do Nikon, Sony, Fuji, Panasonic, Pentax, etc.

Sure - but use reputable sources, at least, even if they're not free...

I guess giving away printers helps you gain market share.

Everyone does that, though. The "real" money is in the ink and the paper afterwards.

I use Canon paper, but I use third party ink.
