SIGMA RF mount lens information finally coming in February 2024? [CR1]

While I keep hoping for a 200-ish mm 1:1 macro lens, having a bunch of the DC DN APS-C lenses available in RF mount would be great. I have the EF-M 56mm f/1.4 and it's small, light-weight, has silent AF and very good IQ. Any of the lenses from the https://www.sigmaphoto.com/lenses/dc-dn page would be a good fit on RF-S bodies.

Does anyone want the SIGMA 50mm F1.4 DG DN | Art for RF as well?
I WANT EM ALL! The 16mm f1.4 for my M50 MK 2 is still my favorite but, I NEED it for my R50! I need them all! Come on Sigma, it's the end of the year!

Canon Unveils New Global Shutter Sensor for Third-Party Use

They seem to sell them mainly for industrial uses. They've been selling a 250 MP APS-H sensor for several years.
Thanks. A number of vendors who sell astro cameras also sell variants of those cameras as industrial cameras, and my sense is that the industrial market is much larger than the astro market, but I don't know for sure.

I'm definitely not in the market for a 250MP sensor . And it's only been the last few years that APS-C and FF sensor astro cameras have become relatively affordable. I have one APS-C camera and one that has a 13 x 8.8 mm sensor. For narrowband imaging, the cost of my filters was more than the cost of my APS-C camera, which is why I didn't go full frame.

Canon and Amazon Win Default Judgment Against Counterfeiters

I was told that by someone I trust who sells on Amazon. So definitely anecdotal. As I said, batteries I buy from B&H, things like memory cards and filters, too.
I buy my things from B&H or Adorama as well.
That probably aligns with my understanding as well then, that co-mingling was ended for a number of product categories. If the person who told you trades in one or more of those, it would have been ended for them even though it's not entirely ended.

Patent Application: Full frame and Super-35 Primes

In this patent application (2024-172507), Canon is showing off some prime designs for both full-frame sensors and some other embodiments for super-35. I'm not sure about the usefulness of the super-35 designs, but curiously, Canon is still creating embodiments for the format. All these lenses also have image stabilization, but they look rather simplistic, so

"Power related problems" with the LP-EL battery for my EL-5

There is a bit of electronics in each battery, so they do burn a bit of power just sitting around.

Hi David,

In my case, the power issues that I was experiencing were 100% attributed to something faulty within my EL-5 flash units, and not in my LP-EL batteries.

For those seeking to test their flashes, or communicate their experiences with Canon, below is the evaluation methodology that I applied to better understand the issue, because at the time, I did not know if the problem was due to:

a) my battery?
b) my flash?
c) or a combination of both my battery and my flash?

From this evaluation, I learned the fault that I was experiencing was most certainly being caused by something within the flash, and not within the battery.

Evaluation findings of my EL-5 Speedlite with its LP-EL battery

The data in Table 2 sought to see if the issue was with my flash.
  • It clearly shows that one of my flashes (#1) was faulty, while the comparator (#2) was not (or, not at the time of data collection).
  • It also shows that my faulty flash basically and completely drained my batteries within 32-hours — with zero flash use, and the flashes only being turned on to record battery information.

This data shows at least two things:
  • a) All of my LP-EL batteries kept their charge when not stored in the flash, and
  • b) they all shared a near similar discharge rate when not inside my flashes.

Note 1:
My second flash (which I used as a control group) eventually became faulty a few months later, yet at the time of my first evaluation, it was working OK. So, whatever the issue was, in some cases it immediately impacts the flash unit, while in other cases it derives over time, or as some have claimed, not at all.

Note 2:
I regret not having shared this data sooner with the forum, as some life events impacted the ambition. Yet, I did share it with Canon, and with content perhaps it helped move the needle in establishing the recall notice. A big thanks to the people who also run and positively contribute to this forum — having a place to share and learn from others with similar gear can make a difference.

When will the RF 24-105 F4 Gen 2 lens be available?

I guess the answer to that probably depends on the answers to "what's wrong with the first one?" and "are those problems bad enough that an improved lens would get a lot of gen 1 owners to upgrade?". My guesses would be that the answers to those are "not that much" and "not really" respectively, so it might be a while until we see a new one.
And, between the EF versions 24-105 that took 11 years.

Richard's Thoughts on 2025

True, but ultra luxury brands are not a good meter to judge a market since they perform in different ways compared to other companies in the same sector.

Years ago I was working for Ferrari (making a web site for them) during an automotive industry downturn. They told me that cyclical crisis times did not affect them much since they had orders for years in the future and their clientele was generally less exposed to economic turbulence. Having said so, it did not change the fact that the vast majority of the car industry was feeling the pinch in those years.
The Veblen Good effect of increasing demand for increasing price has certainly worked spectacularly well for LVMH and Hermes over the last 20+ years
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veblen_good
but I am uncertain of Hasselblad/Phase One being a status symbol. Their dominance has certainly been impacted by Fuji medium format so their ability to increase pricing seeking to increase demand is questionable.

I could see Leica fitting better into a status symbol category. The pricing of collectable vintage items plus releasing new finishes for existing body/lenses at a higher price screams status or investment rather than function/performance.

Canon has released Canon EOS R5 Mark II Firmware v1.0.2

That strange, I updated my R5 Mk II from a CFE card once I removed the SD card so there was only one card in the camera. As I stated in an earlier post: Canon will probably provide a bugfix for this ‘feature’ in a next firmware update.
And I left the lens on, despite Canon's recommendation, because I was too lazy to read the instructions.
But it worked nevertheless.

EF 24-150mm, f/2 - 2.8 for Canon FF

I still want a EF 24-150mm, f/2.8. FF

I do not have to carry two camera and two heavy lenses. It is not practical every time to carry in a functions like hectic wedding.
Always looking for all in one. For years and years we using same range and type of lens.
Sony and Nikon has it 35-150mm f2.8 by Tamron
Why EF?, it can be used for DSLR and for RF camera also with adaptor mount for RF camera.
My lot of business friends switched over from Canon to Sony makes. They literally dumped Canon products in frustration and anger. Canon does freed herself from burdon of making lens nor they allow third party to make variety of full frame lenses. Always some kind of restriction feeling.
Meanwhile, sooo many angry and deeply frustrated silly Canon customers are still waiting weeks and months to get their R5 II, R1, 70-200., 10-20, 200-800 instead of jumping gaily on the Sony Titanic...
Dump them Canons, folks! (But tell me where, please!) :sneaky:

Year in Review: Richard's Hits and Misses of 2024

Agree that within a decade I strongly suspect a global sensor camera with 45 MP with solid DR will exists, but I do question if one will be able to make such a camera high speed without having issues with heat generation issue(s). Time will tell.
Heat has been an ongoing issue for a long time now. The 5Div needed a hardware mod for clog2 if I recall before they upped the price and made it standard.
The processor solution is to reduce the line width of the imaging to get more power efficient processing but the demands for greater processing and storage march on with smaller bodies for the most part.
I'm sure that the fanbois would have found something else to complain about the R5 as they blew their collective minds that it couldn't cope with 8k30raw for >20 minutes. Albeit it took a long time to reset for another 20 minutes. Firmware updates for actual temperature measures and allowing higher internal temp removed the problem but people have long memories.
Ideally the R5C should have been released at the same time.
Canon won't allow that to happen again.

Comparisons of Buffer Speeds (Canon v Sony v Nikon)

He makes some valid points and does cover my complaint about Canon's buffering. I would really love to have the camera simply slow down the shot count instead of just stopping completely, writing, then doing a few more shots. Fortunately, the R1's buffer seems much larger than the R5M2, and I have not been in a situation where I've run the buffer out yet, but I can see it happening at some point.

Opinion: Let's redo the APS-C lineup in 2025. Please.

I assume that Canon will uses the new developed sensor in all of their systems. Just wait a little bit time. The sensor is for a still image photographer not the major things he needs to keep sense. The entire package of Lenses and Body are more important. We are not in the time of a EOS 5Ds(R). They are noisy if you reached ISO800. Modern sensors like them from the "R" or the "R5" are quite better. In the knowledge of the greater "workframe", canon produces lenses with a start f/8 or f/11.

New Batteries

My R5M2 batteries have a white stripe on the front, otherwise you are right, they look very similar. I've taken all of the older batteries out of my case and backpack just for this reason.
Be sure, they are similar in their physics. Just canon has wrote a different Device Id in the balancer/management that the Body can readout the vital data and type. I assume that Canon uses cells with a litte bit higher enery density. I had seen that Sanyo produces this since a two or three years. The capacity of the NH and P cells are the same. The difference between then NH and P battery is, that the P supports a discharge rate of 6A. If the Body consumes that 6A for around 10 minutes, the battery is discharged. I assue that the modes that are not available with an NH battery in the Body, will requires more power, that the older batts not distributes.
Well, i don't see a generally mutch higher price for the LP-E6P as the LP-E6NH. If you are able to pay for a new R5II, the batteries should't be a further hint.
In all of my time of photographer, i had never bought a compatible battery for my Bodies. Some of the batteries are going lower after around 7 years of usage. The magic of the relative good condition for their age is, that i don't discharge them to the shutdown point of the Body and i recharche them up to 40% if i don't need them longer. I have two batteries at 80% level in the bodies.
and yes, this management style requires to plan extended photo excurses previously. But the batteries lives longer if the not charged up to 100% and not discharged lower that 20%. All of them is not new or a magic. But this saves money in an easy way. None of the batteries was ever cheap and sometimes i look jealous to patona or other brands with quite lower prises. Not that i don't trust them, but my bodies was not cheap and i like them, even some of them are very good with mirrors. If one time, the first battery will be death, i replace them by a LP-E6NH again. That are good enought for the R5, R, 5DM4, 5DS, 80D. They all use the same battery type.

Canon R6mark ii random Freeze

Random freezes have occurred in Canon cameras since the original R5 came out. Other brands have freeing issues as well. It happens to some cameras, but not all. Nobody has been able to find the exact cause, as far as I know. You did exactly what you need to do, remove battery and re-insert.
seen online some replaced the cirquit board as this is what caused it but in some cases(canon identified that problem) the problem was seen again! so is this a softare or hardware related problem?

Camera bag, found the shape and size I always wanted... but quality is kind of noble trash. Does someone know a better substitute ?

I do have a separate camera bag that I got with my old rebel T2i that I could carry the second camera in I guess. This would work well for my XC and track shoots, now if I can find it. When I go hiking, I generally only carry my R5M2 and leave the battery grip off of it as I do not generally do a high volume of shooting on these treks, plus I am typically focusing on less weight instead of a plethora of shooting options. I would eventually like to find a backpack that is large enough to get both bodies in along with 2 lenses and consolidate into one pack, but I don't want it to be massive.

Animal Artwork

that is too funny. I even thought to myself...weird name, but sure, camera it is.... :ROFLMAO:

No doubt, I have photographic syndrome in the worst way....
From Wikipedia: "Camara is derived from Greek, meaning 'arched', 'chambered', or 'vaulted'" - almost like "camera";)
We have Lantana camara in Hawaii too - highly invasive...
I afraid many on this forum have the same disorder (good for the companies that are producing cameras)!

Canon Repair Response Period List of Target Products_01 DEC 2024

Hope you were able to translate with Google. With that said, I looked in both Canon documents regarding those products that HAVE been retired and those that are scheduled or are still in the To Be Determined (TBD) state, and I am not seeing any R or RF listed in any of those categories. So, it appears that all R and RF lenses are still repairable at the Canon Service Centers. There will be another document release next year, and we'll look then for any changes.

It was resolved with the the correct google translation, P-visie with the assist! I'm not sure what Firefox spit out.

All good, sorry for the confusion.

The Canon RF 200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM may not ship in quantity until August, 2024

The 200-800 does look very nice, at the first view ... a second and a third view offers 2 or 3 details, that shows you, why the first look never is the best look at any product (only sure, its relativly cheap for a lens like this). Only the price for is to high - for me.
Could you please try to be more vague?
