Canon 5D mark IV + 35mm Sigma ART f/1.4 live view issue

Hi everyone.

I just bought a 5d IV and I have an issue with my 35mm.

I have calibrated the focus lens with the usb dock. That is ok.

But I have a problem in live view.
When I do the focus in live view, if i focus with a non-centered zone, for far objects (More than 1 meter), focus is blur.

I have disabled all corrections.

I thought it was impossible to miss a focus with live view...

Two more infos :

- my Canon 24-70 F4 at 35mm is working perfectly with the 5D
- the 35mm is working perfectly with the live view on the Canon 6D.

So the lens is ok i think, but not with the 5D.

The question is : can someone try to focus a far object with the live view on his 5D4, on the right or on the left with a 35mm ART?

Thanks. :)

Here an exemple :

Auto focus (impossible to do the focus) :

Off Brand: Are We Closer to Confirming that TowerJazz Makes the Nikon D850 Sensor?

TowerJazz bought Panasonic CMOS wafer plants (it was billed as a JV) and with it access to Panasonic back side illuminated sensor tech. TowerJazz has in-house designs and acts as foundry for companies like CMOSIS who design Leica sensors and others of their type and maybe Nikon has an in-house design team and TowerJazz is the foundry.

Sony control the largest % of the global CMOS sensor market and majorly through organic growth (they did purchase a Toshiba wafer plant) and through their own innovation & patents. Omnivision is a large sensor manufacturer but don't really produce sensors for Photography unless you consider smartphones.

Growing steadily are Hynix and Himax as well as a couple of Chinese manufacturers.

It would be a big move for Nikon to move away from Sony as a supplier but given they are competing in the same space not surprising either.

EF-S 35mm F2.8 Macro IS

SkynetTX said:
The specified MFD of the lens is 13 cm only. It means that the MWD is about 3-5 cm. In my opinion it's a way too short for any subject alive. For static subjects and flowers can be acceptable. Theoretically it supports extension tubes but if you try to add a 25 mm one to achieve 1.91x magnification the subject will go inside the lens. :)

Hmm...good point. And the Laowa 60mm 2X has a MFD of 6 cm, so I am back to considering the MP-E. Thanks.

Adding Lens data for older lenses

johnhenry said:
I have a 200mm 1.8 use and what to incorporate CA, light falloff etc correction data the camera can fix this before it arrives at my work station.

How would I go about doing this?

The Canon Lens Registration Tool does not support that lens. Your only option is to apply a lens profile on the raw file as part of your post processing.

Sigma 85 looks better in corners

SRSW said:
The price would be the deciding factor for me personally - does the price gap warrant that much of a image and build quality difference?

If weather sealing and IS means nothing to you and you’re okay with potential AF/copy issues the Sigma will be a good choice. If you value size weight, IS and sealing then the 85 IS might be the right way to go.

I’m really happy with the 85 IS even though it’s a bit far from my 35 L II in image quality.

Patent: Canon EF-M 15-45mm f/1.8-3.5

I invested into the M system this October during their massive refurbished sale. I'm extremely pleased that I went with the M5, as it's a great travel camera. The 15-45 lens is ultra compact and light, which is great news, but the aperture is slow - I get the compromise. My biggest reason for buying this lens was it's 24mm equivalent FOV. It's my favorite wide angle focal length. My plan is to swap to the 22mm f/2, adapted 50mm STM (looks very cool mounted) and a manual 35mm lens for low light stuff. So if this lens comes out...I may be first in line to get it! An f/1.8 or f/2 15mm would be sick. However, I'd take another pancake lens too. The 22mm is lovely.

This eye focus sounds good

Besisika said:
I think we need someone who uses it on a daily basis to explain it more in detail so that we could understand more.

It finds a face, then with the found face it attempts to focus on the closest eye.

Besisika said:
Eye focus sounds great, but how is it different from the Canon face detection in LV?

In my limited experience with face detection (on the 5D iii), I found it tends to find a face and then focus on the closest part, i.e. the nose.

Off Brand: Sony Announces the Full-frame a7R III

Has anyone ordered and received a Sony a7r3 and been able to compare it with the 5dmk4 or 5dsr?

I've had mine for about a week but the adapter only arrived a day or so ago so haven't been able to do anything more than play with it in the backyard, cats and insects so far.

Coming from a 6d (which I'll tell until it completely dies) and an often borrowed 5dmk3, it's a huge improvement, but I'm quite aware that they're also very different price points/levels so would be interested how others are finding it.

Downsides so far are mostly user error, adjusting to differing af modes etc. And the battery life, not as strong as the 6d when you leave it on constantly, but plenty for a good shooting session overall

Canon 85mm f1.4L IS USM First Impressions and images...

looking at these images i am very conflicted. there is a lot to like about this lens, including the price, but the bokeh clipping looks really horrendous to me. i don't mind the cat's eye bokeh balls so much, because there is actually some creative potential there, but the nervousness it creates in the background of the shots with trees i find quite distracting from the subject.

the 135/2 IS ought to be better for clipping, yes?

An other reasen could be the effect "focus breathing". The focal lenght is defined for focusing to a distant point. At mfd, some lenses seems to be shorter...
At least that is how i understood it.

That seems a likely explanation. The lenses were focused on the near water lily, less than 2 m away.

They have obviously different focal lengths: The 1.8 85mm has a slightly longer FL because it has slightly less field of view - it is much more confusing that the out of focus CoCs are smaller at the same f-stop ...
Assuming the f-stops are correct for infinity focus (even that is likely not always the case; perhaps it is actually f/1.95 in this case and canon rounded that down to f/1.8) and the absolute aperture does not change with focusing, the f-stop will also change with a change of the focal length.

Good idea! But if I just measure the diameter of the circles of confusion for both lenses at f/1.8 and calculate the relative area of these circles I see a difference of a factor 2 (in words TWO) - this is a whole f-stop so the EF 85 1.8 would show f/2.5 at the focus distance of 2m - not very plausible because 2m is ~ 25 times the focal length ...

The circle of confusion ratio between both images of the EF 85 1.2 are consistent with the f-stop numbers.

Some quick shots comparing EF 100 2.0 and EF 100 2.8 macro at the same f-stop settings show very similar circle of confusion sizes while beeing very different in optical construction at ~ 1m distance ...

But maybe this is the regime between pure optics and lens magics which needs 20 years of daily experience to be understood.

Review: Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III by Photography Blog

Nice to see a APS-C sensor on a company act camera.
A pity the lens is so slow.
For the price it should be a wow camera.
It’s just a meh! camera.
Sony do a much better job in this segment.
I know people want 4K video but what will they do with it.
Most people don’t have laptops that can process it.
HD is really sufficient unless you are a moviemaker.
Not sure who buys these nowadays.
It used to be a good backup camera but it’s not the best available.
Maybe they still sell well.

Sticky rubberised coating.

Hi Mt Spokane.
Thanks for that, that is the same thing by a different name (two nations divided by a common language ;) ) that is what they describe it is for too.
I like the idea of the pre stretched silicon tube, but man you were not kidding at expensive! Wow!!
I bet that production cost works out something like 10% for the sleeve, 90% for the mandrel and then the profit margin on top (which I do not begrudge any business)!

Cheers, Graham.

Hi Mt Spokane.
Thanks for that idea, I think I have some of that if self amalgamating tape is the same, often used here for added protection on the F type coax connection to satellite LNB units.

Cheers, Graham.

Self adhering silicone tape will work, its very durable and conforms nicely.

Here is a example

https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B01NAPC4J7/ref=dp_olp_new_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=new

I first came across it when designing a kit to repair wiring without using a heat gun to heat shrink sleeving back in the 1980's. Aircraft and Missiles That have fuel in them are unsafe for those high temp heat guns that are used for heat shrink. The tape can do a pretty good job of moisture sealing. There is also a stretchable 3M silicone sleeve which is wonderful and does not need tape.

expensive though.

EOS 7D Mark III Coming in March 2018 [CR1]

Setting up a new 5DIV and I was reminded of one 1DX feature that I really hope is incorporated into the 7DIII: "Save settings to card."

I know nothing is free, but I can't imagine this would be that costly to implement and it would be one more feature that would set make the 7D series more like a mini 1DX.

As would spot metering at the selected AF point. If only we'd get that cell phone / Nikon D5500 level technology in the next 5D. ::)

But, please share some of the photos with the 85. There doesn't seem to be much online hype about this lens and Id love to see more samples.

I've seen some nice samples elsewhere here at CR:

Those are nice photos. The mirror box butchering the bokeh balls looks a little strange to me. I don't think I have a lens that does that. It puts me off a little. On the other hand, not every photo has those bokeh balls.
