Specifications & Images of the Upcoming Canon Lenses

Maybe this is off topic, but i own the 17mm which i would buy again. For the wide angel, i like the shift function, and tilt can be used with little luck and try/error even when handholding the camera. It's my general wide angel lens

2nd choice would be the 24mm for the same reasons.

In my opinion these 2 lenses can be used very generally, whereas i see the longer ones as specialised lenses mostly for product photography, within a professional setup.

Canon EF 400 F4 DO IS II USM first impressions

Adam, thanks for your impressions and thank you for those really nice pictures.

Out of curiosity (if you know):

As this lens is quite new and well reviewed, why was the owner selling it? Didn't it feed his needs?

filename format updates??

ronaldbyram said:
Hey gang, two questions..
1. why does canon not have custom file names on all camera bodies? I know its on the the high end bodies.. is it just a $$ games with options?

2. I have searched the rumors board and I see as far back as 2012, isnt it time Canon updated its file name format?
I am using the 7D MarkII and have a custom Name with my Initials and a 5 digit # Example RSB8xxxx.CR2
this way I sort of keep up with the # of shutter clicks and limits my Dupe file names. And I can group my pictures in groups of 10k.

As I start to approach the 100k Mark for photos taken, I see that I have to alter may prefix to support that range. Not that I dont have to change at the 10k mark already.

I would think that now its 2017 isnt it time for a new format? maybe allow a 6 digit # by default?
I agree!
On my 7D2, I have my file names set to D(for Don)YY(for the year, now at 17)B(a letter that I increment every 1000 photos)XXXX, so a recent picture might be named D17B4567.CR2....

On my 6D2, I am forced to use IMG_XXXX so after only 10,000 pictures, I get duplicate file names. That SUCKS!

Stolen photos

One guy I know took great nature picture. Many years later (not sure how he found out) it was used on a book cover without his knowledge (or permission). He emailed the publishing company with something like this:

"You're using my image without permission. I'll be nice and only charge you twice the amount I would have charged if you asked for permission. Other option is we go to court".

They paid the double. They also told they had no idea, since the cover design was outsourced to some editor who was the one to choose and use the image.

Canon 50 1.2 vs Sigma 50 art specifically for low light photos

I think in general you get a lot of negative comments from people whose poor technique and lack of patience and lack of skills in posing people is blamed on particular lens. Maybe some lens have a tolerance problem but in general if you can't take a good photography with a 50 1.2 you should take up something like fishing.

Sarpedon, I'm very sorry to hear about your gear. :-[

Hector1970, glad you are not frustrated with yours.

Together, you are persuasive about the 50 1.2, but for every few stories like yours, I hear too many negative experiences.

I was wrong, earlier, to say I wouldn't touch it "with other people's money." I'd borrow one from somebody who has a known good copy and give it a whirl, but still might hold out, as eventually Canon will release some kind of update. Maybe.

I want a new nice firmware for the 1dx2, is that too much to ask?

scottkinfw said:
These would be nice, but I would save my $6,000+ for a lens. I can't see moving away from my 1DX unless something really earth moving came out in a III.

Do love my 1DX

No, but I think the thread would have far more value if you actually listed some of the features you'd like.

From a functionality point of view I'd like:-

Intervalometer,
Accurate RAW file histogram,
Unleash the crippled touchscreen!

What I'd like in a MkIII:-

Illuminated buttons,
Twin CFast slots,
7D MkII lever outside the joystick,
RT flash control,
WiFi,

I think when you have a camera the level of the 1DX it is hard to justify the cost of an upgrade. I was contemplating the 1Dx and then thanks to CR, I became aware of the 1DX2 being fairly close so in that context it made sense for me to wait. The wait gave me DPAF which was a real positive since I wanted to do more video and a few other things, one being the illuminated AF points, more like the 1D4.

Patent: Variable Curved Image Sensor Concept

Pie in the sky. Canon has its customers discussing fairy tales. Meanwhile. Canon takes 5 years to update cameras with 4 year old technology.

Maybe.

I have bought the 200D and I am very satisfied with the DPAF in live view especially for closeups of flowers in nature with wide open aperture settings. DPAF is some years old, but it is still unique as far as I know in terms of a combination speed / non-hunting / precision.

I managed to edit 130 photos today using my mouse, but 500 would be a better output.

Are people able to edit a image 100% without using a keyboard or mouse, or must you still use them for some tasks. I'd really doubt that they can be done without a keyboard.
Have CPS and have used touch pads for many years. I also use shortcuts on the keyboard - but you could get a programmable keyboard and have shortcuts here too, so you only have to tap once. I also do this. The combo works for me.

The best touchpad ever (fingerworks ipad) sadly cannot be bought anymore because Apple bought them out to make the iphone. I still use my fingerworks pads, but I have also supplemented with a Wacom tablet. I do all my editing with the Wacom tablet, pen, shortcuts and presets.

Wacom can work for you as a touch pad also. However, Fingerworks got it right and Wacom does not (very frustating), but since you never have used the fingerworks pad you are unlikely to notice this and will enjoy the advantages of touch a lot. Also nothing beats the pen for careful editing.

Do note that it takes time to use a pen effectively. Lots of youtube video's to help you out with getting it right. I only use 25% of my Wacom for the gestures and 100% for pen editing.

Good luck!

I have a Wacom, and have used several of the touch pads in the past. However, with no feeling in your fingers, and no fine motor control, I found them to be a struggle. I not only have CPS, but Neuropathy. I struggle to use a mouse because I can't feel the left button.

As I noted earlier, what works well for some, may not work well for others. I can use both hands, and have used a pen in one hand and mouse in the other which worked very well before my hands became worse.

I'm beginning to be very pessimistic that there is anything I can use without pain.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM

After trying the original Canon 50mm F1.8 II, and the new 50mm F1.8 STM, I swapped it for an older used 50mm F1.4 and couldn't be happier.

It's sharper than the two mentioned lenses at all the faster apertures ( wider than F2.8 ).

Here is a quick test shot (with my old 1D mark II) right after getting this lens.... wide open @ F1.4.

Sigma 100-400 + TC-1401 will not AF on 6D

The 6D, like most older Canon bodies, does not autofocus above f/5.6 (third-parth f/6.3 lenses actually lie to the camera that their max aperture is f/5.6). Many newer bodies AF up to f/8 with the center point, including the 7D2, 80D, and 6D2. Only the 5D4 and the 1DX2 AF at f/8 with all points (but depending on the lens/extender combination, possibly fewer). The Live View AF doesn't have a hard limit and some people have managed to get DPAF to focus up to f/11, albeit slowly, if light is plentiful and there's enough contrast.
