The End of the DSLR?

I had an interesting discussion last night with a guy who has more contacts than I do in the Canon world.

So this guy you talked to was not a Canon employee, but a guy that knows another guy that may or may not actually work at Canon? We don't know what guy at Canon would actually know about this, nor do we know if your guy's guy even knows this yet another guy.

This sounds like one step ahead of asking a random person on the street.

Crap. Now we are in deep trouble. Ralphie said, "a guy." Now we know he meant "they". Oh nooooooooo! ;)

Is Ralphie sure this "guy" doesn't work for Nikon? This sounds more like their recent strategy.

Workaround for Loose Lens Cap on 8-15mm Fisheye

As a slight divergence, here's a tip for anyone whose lens back caps and body caps become loose. With time and use, they all do. I just get a gas cigarette lighter and carefully lick the flame against the lugs inside the cap. As soon as you can see them beginning to expand with the heat, stop. Don't breathe the smoke. :o

Now your caps will be nice and firm for another few years. I've been doing this for decades. ;D

Amazon UK best sellers DSLRs

Since these Amazon lists are updated hourly, not sure exactly what good they do. At 9:45 EDT (in the USA) the top 4 on Amazon.UK are:

13. Canon 5DIV
14. Canon 6D
21. Canon 5DIII
27. Nikon D810

And now at 10:05

13. Nikon D750
24. Canon 5DIV
35. Sony A7S II
39. Canon 5DIII

The real question is, it's the middle of the night in the UK as I write this - who the heck is buying cameras?

Canon Inc. to Acquire Own Shares

With the value of the Yen rising, and profits going up, Canon stock may be a good buy. As they said, the stock can be used for trade in the event of a future acquisition, I expect that Canon is shopping, their two big acquisitions have turned nice profits, and bigger profits may be on the way.

Why buy stock and then use it for an acquisition. If I were to sell my company (if I had a company) I would want cash (though there might be a tax reason to take shares).

The cynical side of me thinks there is no good investment in house so they are spending this $ to avoid being a take over target. This bodes poorly for the future of photography - no big investments.

Fun fact, Canon is *NOT* just a camera company. They are an office equipment and medical equipment company that sells imaging equipment on the side (synergies FTW). Imaging in total is less than 1/3 of the business. Your cynicism is probably better channeled to the lament that there aren't any good office or medical equipment or imaging investments that link to their existing businesses.

A stock buyback means that cash is retained in the company as value rather than distributed as dividends. New shares can always be used later if needed.

I'm optimistic. Unlike Nikon that needs to restructure, and other makers that need to change direction, or Sony that can barely stay profitable, Canon is rolling along.

I know Canon's photo business is a small portion of their overall (imaging) business. History has shown that company that buyback their own shares on average have performed less well than those who did not.

Just wondering if a buyback is the best use of capital.

Continuing to have issues like this justify the critics

It does make it hard to understand the unconditional enthusiasm the zealots have for the technology.

and those who paid out big dollars based on a specification sheet are rightfully angry

Not sure I can find a lot of sympathy for them.

Some of us have been pointing out for years that a camera is not simply the physical manifestation of a spec sheet; and that to base decisions purely on what the specs say (whether when buying*; or - more commonly - in order to beat up on a camera without actually having used it), invariably results in self-inflicted injury.

* Yep - been there. Back in the day I pre-ordered a Nikon D200 before release, purely on the basis of the spec sheet.

Here's Kai Playing With the Canon Cinema EOS C200

I enjoy watching Kai in any camera related video. There are usually 10s, if not hundreds of serious reviews from credited, and amateur photographers all over the Internet. Not every video needs to be serious. I don't watch him to decide which gear I'm interested in. I watch him because I like his videos, usually. Most reviews on YouTube are very similar anyway. Kai's are different and enjoyable, even if they lack a lot detailed information.

Sigma 135mm f/1.8 HSM ART Review | Dustin

P.S. Sigma has asked if they can send me a second copy of the 135 ART to see if it tests as being sharper for me, and I have agreed. I will be following up in a few weeks with those conclusions.

P.S. Tamron is doing the same with the 70-200 G2, as I criticized the performance at 200mm as falling behind the Canon 70-200L II, while some others found the opposite to be true (including Roger at LensRentals).

I guess my point is that sample variation does exist in the real world, but that we are also doing a lot of hairsplitting at this point. These lenses are very, very sharp, and when you compare them to other very, very sharp lenses not everyone gets the same results.

I was a photo Demo at a zoo last week with most of the major brands. I was borrowing the Tarmon 150-600 g2 and loving it. When I got back and returned it to the Rep and started talking to him. I found out it was his copy of the lens which made me like it less bc I assume if you are a Rep for a company you find the best copy of a lens you can...I know I would for sure.
I don't think it will change if I get the lens or not but just another small thing to thinking about when you are comparing great lens of today.

I've just cited two recent examples that show that companies are not "cherry-picking" lenses for me to test.

Canon EF-S 10-18 STM WORKS! at 10 mm on Fuill Frame Sony A7R

candc said:
if the a7r is like the a7rii then it switches to crop mode when an aps-c lens is mounted. I tried the lens on an a7rii with the metabones adaptor. if you disable auto switching then you see a circular image within a dark frame.

Thanks, I kinda figured that. Somehow my gut told me this was a long cry from a 10mm FF perspective.

I have a problem with the 400mm DO II and 5DIV at 1/200-400s. There is a slight mirror slap in the vertical direction. It's worse when the 1.4xTC is on. It doesn't occur with the 100-400mm II.

Out of curiousity, is this handheld or on a tripod, and if the latter, is IS turned on?

Good question. On a tripod with IS on. Turn off IS and shake is just random.

Interesting. I know the red-ring supertele lenses specifically use IS to damp mirror/shutter vibrations at certain shutter speeds. I assume the 400 DO does the same, but perhaps not, or not as effectively.

Recent supreme court case may protect gray market electronics sales

There are a number of Supreme court cases that directly apply to gray market, and they seem to contradict each other, but really there are very fine points involved.

In the USA, the "First Sale Doctrine" is usually used in defense to gray market lawsuits. Technically, the gray market items have been purchased from a authorized supplier, and now can be resold wherever law allows it (USA). Its not that simple, of course, since lawyers twist things around, and since big companies can drive up your legal expenses to the point where you fold.

As you may know, Canon and Get It Digital settled, and Get It Digital no longer sells gray market Canon cameras.

The simple fact is that Big companies like Canon can decide to spend huge amounts of money on litigation such that smaller companies cannot afford to fight them, and then settle their suit to get over it. Expect the same to happen with other gray market sellers. Only a very few are still selling them on ebay, and once their inventory is sold, they may settle as well.

Here is another suit settled out of court: http://www.equipmentworld.com/yanmar-settles-gray-market-lawsuit-2/

The Fujii suit is still ongoing?

Mercedes vs. Lexus.... huh? A 2 week spin w/ a Mk IV

Dear God, these "Canon hasn't made me my personal perfect camera, so they're stuffed" posts are tedious.

And - in particular, OP - the epitome of self-righteousness...

Oh, and being disinterested in some arbitrary feature that you happen to have a hard-on for, doesn't make stills-shooters self-righteous.

It makes them - what's the word? - Oh yeah...

Disinterested.

Different things, see?

Hands-On With the Canon Cinema EOS C200 & Pricing

HTML:
Newsshooter has published their hands-on with the Canon Cinema EOS C200, which doesn’t look like it has been officially announced yet, though it should be shortly.

As far as pricing goes, the new camera will be priced at £7,699 in the UK or $7,499 in US and is scheduled to begin shipping in July.

From Newshooter:

The C200 feels solid in the hand and the form factor at least seems to be the result of listening to what customers say they have been wanting. The same can be said of the framerates – 4K 60p and HD 120fps, from Canon, in an affordable package! And the appeal of a native EF mount with no adapters necessary shouldn’t be underestimated. But there’s always a but – and it feels like Canon are going to have to work hard to persuade buyers that their recording formats and bitrates can live up to the promise of the hardware. Read the full hands-on

if the canon 6D II comes out, would it have lesser features then the 5d IV?

Yes. Its a entry level FF. Still, it will be fine for those who do not need or use the high end features of the 5D MK IV. Some things may be improved, but just minor items.

yeah im on the fence whether to go all out on the 5d IV or wait for the 6D II.

i just sold my 70D and im ready to jump to full frame / video
