Yes there is. But it makes a decisive difference whether i buy a mirrorless FF camera like Sony A7 series that i can use pure and small with a smallish prime lens attached as well as bigger by attaching a grip or using a larger lens when necessary or desired ... Comparrd to buying a huge camerabrick with huge fat lenses that are not even fast constant aperture ... That cannot be made smaller, except by use of a grinding axe.

Leica, like many others have still not fully understood the potential of truly electronic imaging, not to mention solid state cameras. Smartphone makers have understood this. Thats why gazillions of smartphones are sold and gazillions of images created with them. Wheras only dozens of Leica bricks are sold and only few pictures are created with them, since most of these bricks sit in nice clean glass shelves in expensive homes of their wealthy elderly collector owners.

Canon now has demonstrated ultra low light (4MM ISO), 250 MP sensor.

What about DR? Perhaps they can show a prototype (or better a real product) that is as good as the Sony sensors (demo product should put the Sony sensor to shame).

Im not loading them to my PC from the 5DS but to an external drive specifically to manage the larger file sizes. Orginals and edited shots are on the same drive.

Very good stuff here! Also proud that Canon still retains the credibility of its Explorers of Light program by only giving the title to truly talented masters in their craft...unlike another camera brand that's just handing it out to any influential personality that will help sell cameras. LOL

I agree entirely with your views on printing I guess ICC profiles are a stab at uniformity but not all printers have selectable ICC profiles my Canon A3 printer is only designed around Canon paper and its only though trial & error that Ive learned which ones work for say Hahnemuhle fine art papers. Setting the M/C up was a nightmare particularly for wi-fi to the point Id question buying a Canon photographic printer again.

First time out with the 7DMKII and really impressed with it!

I have been out tracking the Red Deer in the Martindale valley for the last week or so. Beautiful creatures and the largest mammals in the UK. The valley comes alive with deer whaling, Its the middle of the mating season and now is the best time to go out and see them, this is a snippet of what was a huge heard of around 50!! Really incredible to watch. Haven't seen any rutting yet but hope to in the next few weeks.

That would be nice although I don't usually do much deleting on the field. Still might be nice way to manage space on cards for all day events. For wildlife shooting, though, that would be very helpful.

I don't think it is? I'd love to have the better DR of the Sony sensor for daytime games, sure, but not at the expense of AF tracking if that were the tradeoff. Also, not sure if you are aware of this but you can adjust your burst rate in the menu. Personally, I'd love to have more frames to choose from when photographing a wide receiver picking off a catch. Can't tell you how many sequences I have that go ball just out of frame > ball tucked into chest and missed the actual moment of the catch.

Why? Crop in post. Either I'm gonna crop it or my editor will, one way or another. The only thing you'll get with a crop mode is too little field of view when the play runs too close to you. I've never understood why anyone would want this feature. Also, the AF system is as complicated as you want it to be. You can set it to switch between all point and single point with a button press if the cases are too much to think about during the action. I hate to come off as one of those smug jerks that's all "why don't you just RTFM :smughard:" but it doesn't actually hurt to be familiar with the equipment you use.

I shoot at 6400 pretty regularly on my 1DIV and am happy with the results, at least for sports. I think people are waaaay to picky when it comes to noise these days. No one notices grain if the shot has good drama and captures the action. People will notice if it's out of focus though!

Correct. It is even reported that the uncompressed RAW format writes 14-bits into a 2-byte space, meaning there are extra 80 million extra zeros (give or take). My only guess why they would do that is to have a file structure in place for 16-bit sensors and ADCs.


However it is likely the architecture of the A7 series (thus far) doesn't facilitate lossless compression (inadequate general resources; diverting cycles to file management could adversely affect performance). Maybe about the time the A7IV comes out, it will. Until then, I'll see how uncompressed treats me. May look into computer-side DNG conversion to cut down on upstream bandwidth to my cloud backups.

The MTF charts do not inspire much confidence personally.

At maximum aperture there is a massive astigmatism at MTF-10 and significant dropoff in performance for the outer third of frame. MTF-30 also drops to poor levels in the outer third of the image circle. The lens will have to do better than that to earn my dollar. If I need to crop to APS-H to get a usable image then what good is it really?

I guess I'll have to see how much it improves on stopping down. If there's no big improvements by f/2.8 (especially in the outer third of the frame ) then there's no real threat of me selling my 24L II. Just my personal take...

Looking forward to seeing some tests.

Getting rid of my Canon gear for another brand would be like kicking an attractive woman out of bed for eating crackers. Sure I would prefer her to not get crackers in the bed, but why ruin a good time?

Exactly my thoughts. The lenses have far more influence on IQ than the sensor. I cannot see anything close to the 24-70 2.8 II in the Sony lens lineup. Adapters are no alternative. There is no sense in switching to a smaller, lighter body, when using the old and heavy glass with adaters. The only downside of my camera is size and weight. But from my perspective there is currently nothing on the market with the same IQ which has half the weight and size.

You are assuming that its on a high end camera, I would not assume that.

Patents do not guarantee cost effectiveness. A patent gets used when it is cost effective for its intended purpose.

A cheap magnifier for a standard LCD versus a expensive EVF. No one said it would be a super high resolution, it does not need to be to compose a image in bright sunlight.

It will likely never happen, but point and shoot users who have only the rear LCD might be happy with a cheap add-on that is compatible with a low cost camera.

There are some great and concise replies here. Please also do a forum search and find the multitude of previous threads where (we that hike) have all discussed this heavily. You'll see a repeating theme of how important having a decent quality hiking backpack is (first priority) and then adding some camera gear to that. NOT the other way around! Unless of course you are on a day hike, then it really doesn't matter because you aren't really hiking and camping, you are just walking a short distance with camera gear on your back along with some snacks and water.

The linked article made me wonder just what sales and prices we will see this holiday season. There have historically been some fantastic 1 day deals starting in October and going thru December as dealers panic and dump inventory. The Final quarter of the Canon Fiscal Year ends December 31, and they always try to blow out as much inventory as possible. They are likely shipping sales inventory to Dealers already, in preparation.

If you have a Camera or lens in Mind, set your price and stick to it. When it pops up, you may only have minutes or hours to jump on a deal.

I appreciate that you can't just design a camera body and slap in a sensor when it becomes available. But there comes a point that the new sensor hotness ain't so new and hot anymore. What happens if the Nikon D820/D850/D900/Dwhatever doesn't come out until a year after the A7R II?

Rumor is part of the Exmor licensing agreement is that no-one other than Sony gets to use new sensors until six months after release.

So, they got their product out as early as possible without compromising the holiday season. If the rumors are true then January is going to be a busy month.

true but a well made 85 prime is a portrait photographer's best kit. also not every one uses canon glass. look at the 50mm art 1.4 900 usd. with a large selection of glass already its sells.

Could there be a confused rumour here in that Canon are actually working on a pair of 28-200mm lenses, the patent for a f3.5-5.6 has appeared, could this be a lower cost version of a f4 L or could indeed the f3.5-5.6 actually be a L that is being hinted at with this rumour.

New cameras have "0" shots. Canon resets the counter to zero after calibrating the camera.

So, as the store told you, you received a returned camera (which has no Canon Warranty), just whatever the store provides.

The customer returned it for a reason, and may not have told the store the whole story. Make sure the store provides a written Warranty, if it says open box on the sales slip, Canon Technically calls it used and will not Warranty a used Product.
