Yeah, they're going to shot off all the innovative Sony broadcast lenses. You know...the ones seen on the HDTV broadcast cameras in Sony's brochures. Oh, wait – those are Canon lenses with the logos photoshopped out. :P

But don't worry, I'm sure Sony will be there to highlight the professional service and support they deliverpromise they're working hard to start to provide.

No one ever disputes Canon's lens and service superiority- we own all that glass, which is why us video folks are so frustrated at their DSLR and broadcast bodies ;)

Puzzling 1DX Mark II Sensor Issue?

Glad you were able to exchange the camera if it wasn't to your satisfaction. You are lucky, and wise to do so. I was told that because I used my CPS membership and got a discount on the camera I couldn't do an exchange and that I'd have to go through Canon for any repairs, which is what I did. Thankfully they did a nice job and I'm really happy with the results.

Oil and dust seem to be a bigger problem on the 1D series, at least from what I have found from my own experiences. I've had three 1D cameras (two 1DX's and a 1DX II), and they've all developed dust and oil spots far faster than any other cameras I've ever had. It probably has something to do with the more violent shutter mechanism and the extra lubrication needed for it.

Interesting. Something for me to keep in mind...out of all the cameras I've had, no major dust issues...although my old T2i did pick up several dark spots by the time I moved up to the 60D...none of the cameras I've had since then have reached that point though...

Not the first time I've heard that the 1Ds are notoriously hard to keep clean.

Patent: How Canon Increased AF Point Spread in the EOS 5D Mark IV

I totally agree with this. One Japanese site mentioned that the IQ of the 5DIV rivals that of the 5DsR. The reason is that IQ isn't just about megapixels, but Canon also upgrades a whole lot of other algorithms at the same time.
I fully expect the 5DIV sensor to be better than the 5DS/R sensor simply because its newer - even if the 5DS/R sensor already got a lot of the "new" stuff Canon put into 5DS/R.

Improvements should be better noise and DR (which Canon highlighted together with improved AF compared to the 5DIII). Colors, wb, anti-flickr, (non-)banding etc. I expect will be the same in the 5DS/R and 5DIV as these areas were improved already with the 5DS/R.

Looking at the DPR test shots I was however surprised how clear a lead the 5DS R has over the 5DIV when it comes to resolution and detail in spite of the upgrade to 30 MPIX. I believe the AA filter on the 5DIV is to blame for this. A blow for people like me who crave sharpness.

New idea for 100mm filter holders

Seems super gadgety and I wonder if we'll be shoe-horned into their filters to work best with this (especially the CPL adjuster). And using wood in the design does not inspire confidence that this will be cheap, and stacking all these 'vaults' and sleeves has me (as always) wondering how they have solved geometry as it pertains to UWA shooting without vignetting.

More power compatible lights with Canon's ST-E3-RT

What you are trying to do is possible... in a way. If you have a more powerful flash (studio strobes, for example), you CAN trigger them with the Canon RT system using this device : https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1183523-REG/phottix_ph89091_laso_ttl_flash_trigger.html

The Phottix Laso trigger has been made to trigger old speedlites, BUT, there's also a flash 3.5mm output on it that allows it to be connected to other flashes. I tried it with my Elinchrom range of products and it worked fine.

Please note that you won't get TTL or remote control of power, no HSS or anything like that, manual only.

Is 5d overkill for me?

This is hard...
I have been pondering and pondering to get a backup/replacement to my broken 5DIII.
Things got complicated when I saw the sample photos taken with a 5DIV today.
That's what I want!


I was perfectly happy with the 5DIII until I saw the sample photos.
5DIV will sell at 3500, 5DS I can find at 2500 and a 5DsR at 2800.
A second-hand 5D III I will go and see tomorrow, 1900 dollars.

What if I'd get a 80D and pay what it takes to get the drowned 5DIII back to life?


No, I like the 5DIII and if the offer tomorrow is OK, I go for it.

A fair bit of rice, it absorbs moisture but not as well as a chemical desiccant.

The camera doesn't need to touch the rice at all, as long as rice and camera are in the same sealed bag.

7d ii/5d iv continuous AF in Live View

The 5D4, like the 80D, has the proper "Servo AF" (note: not "AI Servo") in Live View. That's one of the features of the new improved DPAF sensors. They also give you snapshots during continuous shooting (the screen does not go blank). The 7D2 has the original DPAF with only rough "Continuous AF". (The 1DX2, however, has no continuous LV focus at all!)

More Specifications & Images of EOS 5D Mark IV

Back when the 5D2 was announced, Canon was on the leading edge of video in DSLRs. Now Canon would appear to not care and be doing the least amount possible. Why would Canon do that? So that they don't eat their own lunch.

Rather than "hold back" their DSLRs (such as the 5D4), Canon should be doing more with the EOS Cinema line to differentiate them and make them desirable to have and use for video rather than the 5D4.

And it is the definition of the word 'serious'.
'Serious' videographers are buy definition in the minority. How many 'serious' videographers' would use a stills-priority DSLR of any description as their main camera?
Even then how many times do 'serious' videographers 'need' the full functionality of what they are offering.

As an example I am probably not alone in saying that for 90% of what I shoot the gear I have is overkill, I have it for those 10% of times I need the functionality. Even 'serious' videographers will probably be well catered for with the 5D4 a significatn amount of the time (ie when they are shooting video 'seriously').

1DX Mark II LCD screen

LCD monitor Color Tone

Firmware v. 1.1 for the EOS-1D X Mark II adds another requested feature — the ability to make subtle changes to the LCD monitor’s color tone. Four pre-set choices allow the photographer to use the factory-default setting, warm the display’s color rendition slightly, or cool it slightly (add a bit of a bluish tint), in two stages.

Two potential applications: one would be to allow users working with EOS-1D X Mark II cameras along with other Canon EOS bodies to more closely match the “look” of playback images and video on other EOS cameras. (Keep in mind that as of late August 2016, the only other EOS model with adjustable color tone for the LCD monitor is the new EOS 5D Mark IV camera.)

In general, to match the display of cameras like the previous EOS-1D X or EOS 5D Mark III, you may want to try the Cool Tone 1 or Cool Tone 2 settings.

And the other might be to accommodate slight viewing changes to the LCD monitor, from differing ambient light conditions.

While it probably goes without saying, we’ll reinforce it here — this adjustment to the LCD monitor’s color tone has nothing to do with the White Balance or other settings of actual image and video files, and does not in any way change any files in-camera. It simply adjusts the look of the monitor screen they’re being viewed on.
