tell me if you see the difference....

What is perhaps the most surprising is that you evidently can't see such obvious and relevant differences as the greater brightness and size of the II image vs the I image, each of which prevents this particular comparison from making what (seems to be) your point.

How to match Picture Style "Fine Detail" My on EOS 7DII

WillThompson said:
All three camera jpegs need to match.

As I say, create your own picture style and import it to the 7D2.
From your second and third posts I am not sure if you realise what I am saying because you are restating your OP in different ways.
If you do realise what I am saying please be more clear on what your problem is.

Canon EOS-1D X Mark II Studio Tests

[quote author=the guy who thinks lenses are cameras and the 1D C isn't a dSLR]
The sensor can be moved in one direction at a time: left/right or up/down - no diagonal movements. So it is necessary (for example) to go right, down, left, up. For some pixels the sequence will be RGBG but for others it will be GBGR. Easier to capture the light from each 4 locations than to selectively throw away the second green.

I do not think this is correct statement.
With such limitations IBIS would not be working correctly.
For IBIS to work correctly sensor need to be able to move at any angle/direction from central point.
Movement direction is the Vd vector resulting from SUM of two sensor movement vectors - Vx and Vy.
Vd angle depends on the values and directions of Vx and Vy.
Simple school math.

Well, given the source of the statement, it's incorrectness shouldn't surprise anyone.

Simple school math is beyond some people.

Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS Update Information [CR2]

I do not want to start a new thread, being a new member for just a few minutes, so I hope there is still some 'life' in this topic. :)

First let me introduce the reason for my addition to this topic.

I own the Canon 70D with (among others) a 55-250 STM for about 2 years now. For travel this lens is nice, due to its light weight. But optically it is not fantastic at the long end, despite the great reviews in the MTF-department. It seems to be quite fast with AF though.
Because I want to do more with bird photography (also in flight- that is), I have been looking around for a better (optically) lens, that has a fast AF.
I have considered several lensen and concluded:
- Canon 70-300 L: optically fine, but (very) slow AF.
- Canon 70-300 non-L: optically mediocre (and worse than 55-250 STM), AF slower than the 55-250 STM.
- Canon 100-400 II: optically great and very fast AF ........... but that price tag.
- Apparently a Canon 200-600 is on the way, but perhaps too long for me and the AF will probably be less good I write this because I regularly keep reading that Canon routinely markets lenses with lower specs than is wanted by customers and sometimes even than the price suggests - so they do not spoil the sales of their L-lenses.

Of these lenses, a 10-years old lens like the 70-2300 non-L to me stands out as a bad thing. And I have heared other also say they do not understand why Canon has not replaced that years ago. It is an EF lens, so supposed to be used on full-frame cameras. Such an average lens does not attract new buyers. That is the result being able to find info on lenses on so many test sites. Even existing users (clients) start to wonder if they should continue with Canon, as I have notices recently (but that is a different topic, also related to the better sensores in competing cameras when it comes to image quality).

Considering the impressions I have as described above, I would expect the "update" mentioned at the start of this thread to be here by now. The "new USM motor" can, in my hunble opinion, only be the new nano-USM technology that has been introduced in the new EF-S kit lens that came out with the new 80D.

But the main question I have, and I think many others that would like to stay with their Canon gear: when will this NEW 70-300 non-L arrive?

Any new info on this?

PS
I just saw that this thread has so far attracted "14784 Views". That may be an indication for the wish of many others also to get an optically better 70-300 non-L than Canon has with the present non-L 70-300.
It is after all around 10-years old, so not really up-to-date to present technology....... like several other people before me already wrote in this thread.

Canon 1dx II - Cfast cards

I have the 3400 @ 256 GB and have not had any problems with stills. I did a quick 2 minute video at 4k at 60fps and it seemed to work w/o any problems. I hope this helps and does not just muddy the waters! I rarely do video but if you would like me to do a specific test, give me instructions and I would be happy to test it for you...

Have a GREAT trip!

How are you playing the videos? Mine are very choppy.

justification for buying a 5D4

Full-time red AF point illumination....

This. The red af points on my 1DXII are amazing. I didn't think it would be a huge deal (coming from a 7D2) but now I think it'll be hard to switch back to the 7D2 as my second body.

With the 80D and the 1DXII being so great, I wouldn't expect nothing but spectacular with the 5DIV. Let's hope that canon puts in AF point linked spot metering in the 5DIV.

35mm f2 IS maximum magnification with tubes

Well, that was all for nothing. I expected the loss of focus at infinity, but I didn't expect the subject to have to almost touch the lens before it could focus. My slide/film duplicator has a fixed barrel length of about 90mm, so way outside the range of usability of the 35mm lens and tubes. Guess the tubes are going back and the EFS 60 macro stays in my bag.

Damage?

Since the kit lens is not a full time manual focus lens, twisting or obstructing the (front) focus ring will sometimes damage the very fragile plastic gears in the AF module.
Replacement is not difficult if you have some experience working with tiny screws and flex cables etc. The following video explains everything. The only thing you need to pay attention to is not to lose the spring. (1:20)

Sony Alpha 7R II has impressive image quality, and have brought new and handy features, that we hope other manufacturers will implement. Our testing of the A7RII shows that it is very capable in quite a few situations, but it also has some serious shortcomings.

... Add to that, that the serious DSLR offerings has a direct AF-point controller, that makes it very easy for the photographer to choose were to focus. We find it very strange, that Sony has overlooked such a controller, when they at the same time offer the widest AF point covering seen in a full frame camera. (Arguably the dual pixel AF-system from Canon has wider covering when shooting in live view.)

... The A7RII´s bad menus, bad buttons and a general lack of response in many situations can have a very negative impact on the shooting experience.

... Dynamic range at low ISO is very impressive, although for most shooting, we rarely see the real world need for pushing shadows more than 3 stops.

... Of the few lenses Sony has released so far, one should be aware that unlike Canon, most of them has a a lot of copy to copy variation, so the chances that you get a bad copy, is quite big.

... However, before making the sizable investment that the A7RII and lenses is, even those shooters should take into consideration whether or not the questionable quality of some of Sony´s offerings, reflects on a risk that they are willing to take.

Leica Announces the LEICA M-D Digital Rangefinder

George D. said:
Regardless, Leica philosophy has a side point to reflect upon. 1. We need less bulky DSLRs. 2. We don't need the entire DIGIC parameters displayed in triplicate (top LCD screen, rear LCD and viewfinder). Downsize. Use less or smaller batteries to save space. Unless (Canon) your target group ends up to be just "those guys with the white lenses" in the soccer fields.

Well said, George.

For someone who grew up on Canon SLR and just feels over-encumbered now with the shear bulk of DSLRs and a small lens kit, the M mount has been immensely liberating. It just requires one to shoot more manually, which is what most advanced photographers will be doing anyway when they don't need AF tracking.

If Canon had a product in Full Frame with comparable optics and a comparable system form factor, I would be all over it. But that product doesn't yet exist. (In my opinion EOS-M has some great advantages, but isn't in the same ball park.)

LEE Filters Introduces Very Hard and Medium Neutral-Density Graduated Flters to its Systems

I've shot a few seascapes with their bread-and-butter 0.6 and 0.9 hard ND grads and I didn't really see a need to change it. Why even offer this? Is this some casualty of people shooting with 50 MP+ rigs? Are pixel-peepers shaking their fists at ever-so-slightly shaded tops of waves?

The original Hard and Soft ND grad sets are more than enough for my pro seascape/landscape needs. Resin's filters are difficult to keep scratch free however (i'm on my 4th set of Hard NG grads in 11 years), so would prefer glass version of these filters to more transition variations.

New Lee Medium and Very Hard ND Graduated Filters

I haven't come across any reviews yet, however i'd be surprised if color rendition is anything but excellent. After 11 years of pro use (on my 4th set of grads), the only issues i've had with their products is quality control. The last set of ND grads I purchased were covered in dust and my Big Stopper had a small but prominent scratch, thankfully this is out of the image circle of my lenses, so I opted to keep it rather than wait for a replacement (long back orders at the time).

5D4 image quality given 1DX2 Results

Missing a few points I believe.

The 5DS at 100iso up to 400iso is very clean and the resolution outstanding, the colorimagery is also better than the 6D I have, and even DXOMark said it has about 1/2 stop better DR than the 5D MKIII. The 5DS demonstrated that Canon has improved its image processing particularly at low iso, it also shows no sign of banding and if the 5D MKIV has the newer Digic 7 as seen in the G 7X MKII and on chip ADC then it could be a good 1 stop better than the 5D MKIII.
Its almost certainly going to be around 24MP and as the 6D was aimed mainly at travel & landscape it will either sit just below the 5D MKIV at 22MP or just above at 28MP, I beilive the latter. If I was Canon I would make the 6D MKII a FF version of the 80D so that puts it at 24MP. The Canon 5D MKIV should gain all the improvements the 5DS had (i.e. better 252 zone metering linked to iTR tracking, sturdier base plate, motorised mirror assembly, intervalometer, customisable menu screen, flicker detection etc) plus spot metering linked to AF points, built in, wi-fi, zebra peaking, 4K video and illuminated AF points.

80D vs 6D ownership now over 2+ years

I want to thank everyone who replied to this thread... In the end, I am going to go for the 80D.

I really loved everything about the IQ of the 6D, but the usability wasn't there for me (right now). Call it a combination of my shooting style and my own lack of lenses.

I can use the 80D today and get better results out of the equipment I already have. In a year or so, I will look into maybe a steal on a new/used 6D or even a 6D2... By that time I should hopefully have a couple more FF lenses and the whole FF thing will make more sense.

I am loving the 80D though! Thank you everyone :)

glad you like it! And nice to hear a real world experience.

From what I've understood, the 1dx II isn't actually much better at 12.800 (look very similar) than the 1DX but you think otherwise?

DPAF sounds quite useful! How do you experience very low light focus? This is an area in which I think 5d3/1dx focus system could be improved for our type of work.

I've been contemplating a 1 series (i've shot weddings in the past with a 1d3, IV and 1ds III) but if the 5d IV will give me most things I need (dpaf, improved sensor and better low light focus) that might be a better and lighter weight option for me (and hopefully with silent shutter similar as 5d III). Still, tempting :))

Thanks for posting this!

I definitely think that ISO 25,600 is really close to 12,800 on the 1DX. I would have really stayed away form 25,600 on the 1DX. Now I am happy to use it on the 1DX2. I think above 25,600 starts to be iffy for me. However a PJ would use it gladly.

This camera really shines with it's AF both OVF and DPAF. The DPAF is better than advertised in my opinion. It focuses instantly in any lighting scenario. I am sure if you pointed it at a black wall in the dark it might have issues, but other than that it is great!

Wow, I'm really psyched to hear that about the DPAF! I went in store to try it on the 80D and I thought it was fantastic for stills. Didn't get to try it on moving subjects or low light however. I think I'll keep the money I was about to spend on a Sigma 20 1.4 Art and buy the next FF camera Canon makes with DPAF (can't afford a 1DxII so either 5DIV or ? 6DII ?). Thanks for sharing your experience!
