80D noise performance posted on DPR

Someone needs to explain to me why DPr is using the 50mm 1.4, arguably one of the worst lenses in canon's lineup, for a comparison of detail recovery.

Just speculating, but a 50mm f/1.4 is a lens that every manufacturer has, or possibly it's a 'reference' lens used consistently across many reviews for comparison purposes.

And the EF 50mm f/1.4 USM was Canon's sharpest 50mm prime for a very, very long time. It's no Sigma Art resolution-wise, but it's also no slouch.

Sony Exploring a Split of Imaging Product Division

Sony is still struggling to find a way to make losing parts of the business profitable. They split off the sensors into a separate business, the cell phone industry as a whole is tanking, and suddenly, the sensors business lost money. In spite of that, it was a good idea. Each business needs to stand on its own, or justify more funding from the parent. I do not see how they can keep pumping money into their losing cell phone business, but they do.

The imaging business is barely making money, so maybe as a separate entity, they can cut overhead and be a going concern.

24-70mm II or primes?

CanonFanBoy said:
My 24-70 f/2.8L II is perfect. I wouldn't get a prime unless I needed a faster lens. Mine is soooo sharp! It is an expensive lens, but well worth the money. I guess it might cost less than getting primes to cover this range. Not sure.

I hope you really like whatever you decide fits your needs best. :)

I agree about the 24-70/2.8II. Really, really sharp. It is about as perfect as a lens should be at this price level. I love the bokeh too. And I love that Canon made it smaller and lighter than its predecessor, and mechanically more reliable. Just a win in all respects.

I still use primes in this focal length range too, but not for improved image quality as the 24-70 is already excellent for image quality. Instead, I'll choose primes if I want a smaller lens, a wider aperture, or simply the creative discipline of using primes.

Canon EF 16-35 f/2.8 mkiii & The Blue Goo

Max, do you know if the BR optics has an effect on coma for astro?

All we know is that the 35L II kicked the 35L I's butt w.r.t. coma:

II: http://www.lenstip.com/466.7-Lens_review-Canon_EF_35_mm_f_1.4L_II_USM_Coma__astigmatism_and_bokeh.html

I: http://www.lenstip.com/170.7-Lens_review-Canon_EF_35_mm_f_1.4L_USM_Coma_and_astigmatism.html

...but as BR was far from the only change between the I and II versions, you can't really hang a gold medal on BR for that improvement. It could just be a superior overall optical design regardless of BR.

I wonder if the upcoming 85 might be the perfect complement to my 10-18 and 35 2.0 IS since that'll be a complete travel set with 67mm threads (other than the wish-listed 100-400).

Filter sharing is a pretty big deal when you are traveling.
Thanks for all your work, too. Whatever I order I'll do so through the link on your site. They're all different, but I'm weighing the soon-to-be new Tamron 85, Canon 100L and 70-200 4.0 (maybe the non-IS since I'm often on a tripod or can speed up the shutter in most cases. Might be leaning towards the Tamron.

Thanks for that. I have high hopes for the Tamron, but you might want to wait until I've had a chance to review to ensure there are no nasty surprises!

Off-Topic from the start: Off Topic Forum?! :D

The off-topic topics should belong to a very limited lists, with the obvious exclusion of - at least - the following:
- Politics
- Religion
- Full Frame vs APS-C ;D

Politics? Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Not that important
Religion? We need to be tolerant. Not that important
FF vs APS-C? I don't care what your opinion is I will fight you to the death on this topic!!! ;D

Not to forget DR ;)

I see that to some, off topic means recruiting for ISIS, or weird things, a unlimited forum is not going to happen.

To me, Off Topic means a place to discuss photography in general rather than having to fit your post into one of the many subject boxes on CR.

If Off Topic means other subjects than photography, that's not likely to happen. There are lots of good forums for those with other interests like motorcycles, boats, skiing, and a almost infinite variety of subjects. Photos of those are On Topic on CR.

5DS R vs 7DII

AlanF said:
I have been toying with getting a 5DS R for my bird photography as well as being an upgrade for my 5DIII. There has been debate in various forums about Moire and colour artefacts, but they are minimal, a consensus that the 5DS R is about 10% sharper than he 5DS, but the difference gets less after sharpening, a huge plus that it has the same reach as an APS-C and the field of view of an FF, but the files are huge and the fps slow. Arthur Morris raves about the 5DS R for bird photography whereas Glenn Bartley considers it just a studio camera.

On Thursday, Canon announced a £250 cashback on the 5DS R and an official Canon retailer in the UK was selling one at a 20% discount. I couldn't resist the overall 28% discount and ordered one immediately to test for myself.

My first tests just using iso 12233 charts have indeed shown that before sharpening the 5DS R gives images distinctly sharper than from my 7DII, using the 300mm f/2.8 II and 100-400mm II with or without 1.4x and 2cxTCs. On sharpening, the difference is indeed lowered, but is still there. So, my 5DIII is about to be sold and I'll be using the 7DII and 5DS R as my stock cameras. By the way, the 100-400mm II, with or without the 1.4xTC stands up well against the 300mm f/2.8 II with the 1.4 or 2xTC on the 5DS R. I am going to enjoy the 5DS R. OK, the files will be huge and the fps lower, but the larger field of view with its easier locating of small birds and less clipping of large ones will be a serious compensation.
Alan have you confirmed that 7DII is better at high iso and that 5DSR is better at low iso?

Which magazine ratings of DSLRs and CSCs

AlanF said:
The UK Consumer Association magazine “Which” has just rated DSLRs
For DSLRs: #1 is the Nikon DF (but no video); 2, Canon 5DIII;

Was the 5DS/R mentioned? Seems strange to me it did not make the #2 place since its very similar to the 5DIII - just a little better in lots of small aspects from menu system to shooting options to IQ (all of which the Magazine seems to rated highly).

Canon EOS-1D C vs Nikon D5 for 4K Video

Bennymiata said:
Canon must be breathing a sigh of relief.
Seeing the new Nikon competition, they don't have to wory about putting GOOD 4k into the 1dx2 or 5d4. They can just use their 4 year old 1dc technology with the new cameras and they will still beat the competition.

Except that the A7R II exists.

Also the 1DX/1DC/D5 class DSLR aren't really the ideal first choice for many who are also into video so it's really the D820 they need to worry about. One would hope it would be the A7RII video at the least (maybe even improved to 10bit) and more features, but Nikon does seem to be dropping the ball a little in taking advantage of things so gotta hope they don't end up foolishly bungling the D820 video.

Silent Mode 1DX II VS 5DSR

Silverman said:
You can easily identify the right body as 1DX II: look on the new start/stop buttom "switch" (on the 1DX II now like on the 5D series) and the new joysticks.
Thank you for showing this to me.

The silent mode of the 1DX II has a different characteristic than the silent mode of 5DSR but also higher possible FPS in silent mode. The noise sounds very usable for my needs.
And if this video contains enough information for you than it's okay.
Please note, I didn't want to offense you for your decission,
I only wanted to say that this video wouldn't have helped me,
even though I am now convinced that it's a MkII.

There's More to a Camera System Than Just the Gear

It's a pretty simple plan... make a high quality product that works well and people want. Then you don't have to fix it as often but when you do, fix it right with a smile and keep that customer (happy) that you worked so hard to get selling the quality product in the first place. Oh... and a bonus is that a happy customer will bring other customers to you and sell for you.

Ditching Sigma 35/1.4 for Canon 16-35/4 ?

gigabellone said:
Well, adding an UWA prime would be a hard choice: it would cost a lot more, and i'm also considering an overhaul of my gear to really consider what i need, and try to keep everything packed in a somewhat compact and not too heavy package. On several occasions i have left my gear at home because of either size, weight, bad camera bag choice, unwieldy tripod.

I'll buy the 16-35/4 and keep the Sigma 35 for a while, just to be sure i'm doing the right thing.

Thanks for the feedback and the insight!

I think you are making a very wise decision to keep both for a while. Good thinking.
