Canon Working on Professional Underwater Camera? [CR1]

UPDATE:
$1650 = B&H kit for SL1/18-55mm plus Ikelite housing with ETTL (single tray).
Wide angle option
$1870 = SL1 body $400 + 10-18mm @ $250 + $10 ikelite adaptor + $1200 housing

SL2 will be better....
If Canon can make a housing for SL2 similar to their P&S @ ~$800 then they will have a winner!
************
Hi.
Current owner of S100/Ikelite housing but don't know how to upgrade! I use it for underwater and beach shots but I don't shoot regularly enough to warrant a big investment.

Canon has always had housings for their P&S but nothing else that I know of. All other underwater cameras are limited to snorkeling depths

Options with pricing from B&H (Ikelite is more expensive than Canon):
~$600 S120+Canon housing
~$965 G7x + Canon housing
~$1020 G1x II + Canon housing (B&H has serious discount at the moment for the housing!)
~$1800 RX100 iii $800 + Sea and Sea housing $975 (B&H)

I have a 7D as well but the Ikelite housing is twice the current price of the 7D ($2400 for 1 port) and metal housings are even more expensive.

Any higher level requirements (single digit SLRs etc) would still go to the specialists.

Requirements for a profitable niche in the $1200-$1500 range
- Good quality tracking AF (you or your subject are always moving underwater)
- Low light ISO noise performance as fast shutter speed needed
- RAW shooting is a given as white balance correction in post is needed
- Angled/magnified viewfinder. Angled LCD on back for video
- Lens (both options)
~18-50mm equivalent wide angle + dome (wide angle and over/under shots)
optional stick with remote trigger for surf shots/selfies??
~80 mm equivalent macro (flat port) for shooting nudis etc
- with optional dual tray to add strobes (optical/ETTL would be perfect) using existing 3rd party strobes/arms etc

Enjoy!

Which lens/es to take on Iceland 12-day tour?

Khalai said:
Thanks everybody for all your answers. So far, I'm inclined to this:

6D primary, 7D backup
16-35L primary lens
70-200L complementary lens
100L just-in-case lens
50/1.4 throw-it-in-my-pocket-fun-lens

Manfrotto 190XProB tripod with 496RC2 ball head (old, beaten, but trusty)

Half a ton of LEE gear (little stopper, 0.6 hard grad, 0.75 soft grad, 0.6 ND, three colour grads (fun!), 105mm polarizer) and 77mm old B+W Kaesemann polarizer I already had before purchasing LEE system.

I should be set, right?

I was there in 2013 summer. Your kit is a no brainer. from your choices I would not hesitate:

Take the obvious ones you'll be fine
16-35
24-70
70-200

Don't bother with the 100L you will not use it (no subjects for that, no insects, no plants, no flowers..), 50 1.4 unnecesary in my opinion, you will not have any night nr low light scenarios, its sunny 24/7

The 70-200 is the one you'll use the least unless you go to Latrabjarg or Vestmannaeyaer island when you'll see tens of thousands of puffins, arctic terns etc, there the 70-200 will save the day.

Tripod a must logically and the filters too.

Really, don't bother with the 100L or 50 1.4

Sigma Tripod Socket TS-81 Availability Announced

The Sigma's is square, uncomfortable in the hand, and close to the lens body, so fingers touch the lens. The Canon is beveled and has a rubberized pad for extra grip. It is also far enough from the lens body that a gloved hand is not going to touch the lens body.

True of the 400/2.8, but not the 300/2.8 which would have been a fairer comparison.

I am trying to point out good vs. bad design. I don't own a Canon 300, and am not sure why I need to be fair. If the Canon design for the 300 is bad, they should fix that too.

I was thinking because the 400/2.8 is a much bigger, heavier lens so it naturally has a bigger foot. But actually the difference is not that great is it?

Nikon Settles Lawsuit Against Sigma

Mitch.Conner said:
I really hate these kinds of stories. What patent(s) were at issue. What is the case citation? I'd like to look at everything. Petapixel's version doesn't appear to have much more info.

Yes, Its less than useful if you don't know what its about.

I did a some research and found it.

Its the VR patent lawsuit, filed May 25, 2011. Last year, the court suggested a 14.5 million dollar settlement. Nikon wanted more, but rather than appeal, finally decided to accept the settlement. Part of the issue is that there was not a whole lot of life left on the 2002 patent, so its value decreases as the expiration date approaches.

Its basically just a minor slap on Sigma's wrist.

I use Photozone, good test for both full format and aps-c censored bodies.

http://www.photozone.de/canon-eos

Photozone is nearly dormant. They still haven't tested the Sigma 150-600s on anything and have tested the Tamron only on FF. They have posted very few tests in recent months.

Sometimes they are a bit slow, it depends on lens availability in Australia (for Klaus who does Canon). And they can't do very long focal lengths for space reasons. Some tests are fast though.

The owner of http://www.lensfreaks.com/ publish on the Swedish version (http://www.objektivtest.se/nyheter/onska-ett-objektivtest/) that he wants requests for lenses to reviews for. So contact him with your request.

Need good small sensor camera for Macro

Olympus EM10 MFT body is pretty small and wickedly capable.
Panasonic makes even smaller MFT bodies but you'll pay more.
If you don't need an EVF then Oly's Pen series can meet the ask, plus you can adapt and stabilize most makes of lenses.
Edit: and Fuji's XA1 or XA2 are also small and wickedly good with APSC sized sensors.
if you really want some small package and small sensor, find a Pentax Q7 on blowout sale or its newer replacement.

Macro 2X life size. Someone know this lens?

9VIII said:
I'm a big fan of my Sigma 150mm Macro, it still seems too short sometimes though, once you get used to the extra working distance it still seems like "not enough".
If someone would make a 200mm 2:1 Macro lens that would be amazing.
Or, heck, how about 300mm or 400mm, I have the tripod for it and it would be amazing to take macro shots without stooping down all the time.

I guess you are looking for the Sigma 180 2.8 macro, add a 2x converter and you get a 360mm 5.6 2:1 macro as you were dreaming of. it's big, heavy and expensive, but most dreams are :)

Canon Issues EOS 5D Classic Service Advisory

Editing- You just select the text and edit it within the "quote" and "/quote" tags. Much more difficult to do on a phone.

You are aware that the 5D does not have a "self cleaning" sensor, right?

The 6D is likely to be an improvement over your crop camera in most everyday lighting conditions, with a cropped 6D frame being equal or better to the native view of your crop camera. The AF array of the 6D is comparable to what you get in the 5D/5DII with the exception of the center point in the 6D, which is the best of any current canon camera.

Unless you have a 7DII, I'd suggest selling the crop camera and the EF-S lenses if you own them and go for a 6D over the 5D.

Yes, I am aware that the 5D sensor is not self-cleaning.

THANK YOU for your suggestion that the 6D is worth the extra $ over the 5D. Since I have saved enough for a 5D, I will continue to save until early fall- by then maybe I can afford a 6D, and if there is a 6Dll on the horizon, I expect that the prices of even a new 6D will drop a bit.

Right now I can buy a new 6D on the CPW website for what most sellers are asking for a used 6D on Craig's list in northern California. So- prices must have already come down a bit--

I will hold on to the 70D for now, as I like it a lot. It may pair well with a 6D after I save up the $. No big hurry as I don't really need a 6D immediately. I was in a hurry with the 5D due to the end of service issue, but that issue goes away with the 6D

Thanks again for your excellent suggestion

Canon New Cosmos of Photography Contest 2015

Haha. A good one. I think everyone can participate. :-)

In their Entry information they state under Entry conditions:

Each Applicant (individual or group) may enter only one work. The same person may not enter simultaneously as an individual and a group.

However later on under How to submit your work -> Still image data:

The image size should be 1200 x 1600 pixels or larger (recommended). Up to 100 photos or 500 MB can be uploaded.

Now this is a controversy. It could be either tech aspects of possible uploads or under work is meant a patch of 100 photos.

What do you think?

Fujifilm Announces Lightweight X-T10

HTML:
<em>X-T10 uses advanced scene recognition and new auto focus system to capture your memorable moments</em></p>
<p><strong>Valhalla, N.Y., May 18, 2015 –</strong> FUJIFILM North America Corporation today announced the all new FUJIFILM X-T10, the latest premium interchangeable lens camera that joins the world-renowned X-Series digital camera line-up. The sleek FUJIFILM X-T10 delivers outstanding image quality, usability and portability for photo enthusiasts with its new innovative autofocus system, large electronic Real Time Viewfinder, and incredible continuous shooting speed of up to 8.0fps. The X-T10 also has an amazingly short lag time of just 0.005 seconds so users can be ready and capture every image imaginable.</p>
<p>The FUJIFILM X-T10 uses the latest generation 16.3 Megapixel APS-C X-Trans CMOS II sensor with built-in phase detection autofocus along with the high-performance EXR Processor II, and is compatible with all FUJINON lenses to deliver excellent resolution and outstanding image quality.</p>
<p><strong>Advanced new autofocus system

</strong>The FUJIFILM X-T10 uses a new auto focus system that complements the fast and accurate single-point auto focus system with new Zone and Wide/Tracking modes, which use 77 autofocus points across a wider area to substantially improve the camera’s ability to track and capture moving subjects.</p>
<p>The Zone mode allows users to choose a 3×3, 3×5 or 5×5 zone from the 77-point auto focus area. When combined with the AF-C continuous focusing mode, the camera continues tracking a subject in the selected zone. The 3×3 and 3×5 zones at the center, in particular, offer extra-fast focusing with the use of the built-in phase detection pixels.</p>
<p>In the Wide/Tracking mode, the camera displays the area in focus, identified automatically out of the 77-point auto focus area (Wide in the AF-S mode) and tracks the focus area’s subject across the entire 77-point AF area (Tracking in the AF-C mode). This makes it possible to maintain focus on a subject that moves vertically, horizontally, and back and forth.</p>

Sell 70-200 2.8 II and keep 100-400 II?

I sold my 100-400 MK I to get the 70-200 2.8 IS MK II with 2x TC II, so I would never sell it, still the 100-400 II is better than the first version and so its a different story, I am not a pro as well, so yeah budget matters, and only you can decide which to keep based on your current gear and needs.

However here are somethings to consider:

  • What do you shoot most?

Do you shoot Weddings?Portraits?Indoor Sports? if no then sell it, if yes; do you like bokeh more or sharpness? do you want better low light performance or the zoom versatility? as you may already know, the 70-200 2.8 IS II is the sharpest lens in the focal range at this price, however you can get up to two lenses to replace from the following list (135L, 85L, 50L, 35L, 50 Art, 35 Art) you can get these for low light and extreme bokeh.

  • Do you care about sharpness?

Some said that the 100-400 MK I is better than the 70-200 II with extender, I guess it depends on sample variation, but that wasn't the case with me, below is a 100% crop of a shot taken with the 70-200 2.8 IS II with the 2x TC II @ 400mm 1/1000 f/5.6 ISO 400 with the 5D3, the image is straight out of LR with no sharpness added except for the default value LR does, of course it may not be as sharp as the 100-400 II - which is why I plan on getting one - but I guess its good enough, most of the time though I don't get images as good as this one, which is only caused by my lack of skill.

  • How strong are you?

Yes really, how strong are you? do you like carrying that bag with both the 100-400 II and the 70-200 II?

  • Which lenses do you have?

Do you have mid range zooms? ultra wides? nifty 50? this overlaps with the first point but even if you don't shoot landscapes its a must to have a mid range zoom or ultra wide zoom, you can get 16-35 f/4 IS and the 24-70 f.4 IS for the 70-200 II and little extra which covers you for the full range, you may have these and want to invest for the new 11-24.

In the end it depends on what you want and need, only you can decide.

Edit: for comparison sake I add an image taken with the 100-400 I on the 600D, I know its not a fair comparison but that is what I had at the time, the shot was taken @ 400mm 1/640 f/6.3 ISO 100

24-105 replacement

If you like the 28 70 range, then the tamron 28 75 is peanuts (will net you some cash after the swap) and a extremely good lens(real life better than the charts) also (prolly better than the 28 70 canon). I had one and only sold it because the 28 was too narrow on my crop sensor camera... Would have been fine on FF
I'll check that out too!

That's quite a bold statement in an enthusiasts' forum, watch out for your Karma getting hit for six :->
I wouldn't say it's terribly unreasonable to keep "Go out and take photos" at the top of the priorities list.

Which would explain your low post count :-) ... or you've probably got a faster computer than me and don't have lotsa time to waste in your web browser while Lightroom is buying busy rendering.

I have indeed seen what you did there.

I should make a meme. "Everyone's rushing out to the buy the latest gear. Meanwhile, I'm like, "I think I'll take the money I didn't spent on gear and put it towards spending 10 weeks cycling across Canada with the gear I already have." "

G1X conversion to infrared

I'm considering the same thing since they're running a promotional discount right now. I plan to convert my eos M. It would allow me to use different lenses which will be very cool.

Lifepixel and Kolari Vision both have very good reputation. I don't mind going either way. Right now I am torn between enhanced color and the super color filter. But most likely I'll do enhanced. The super color seems too over the top to my taste.

I think if you are attracted by false color, you'll need enhanced color filter at least. If you like black and white you may as well go for the deep b+w.

If you start with an enhanced filter you could potentially add a higher cutoff filter in front of the lens. This is what I'll be doing since I already own a standard external IR filter.
