Actually, surveying for nearby supernova remnants in H-alpha might be a pretty interesting project scientifically in itself for this Dragonfly.

Yes - the problem is that we'd have to get different detectors, with much lower read noise. With narrow band filters the read noise is no longer smaller than the noise from the sky background, and the setup is no longer competitive.

Any chance you guys have some forward knowledge of larger ultra-low-noise sensors coming out? Sony's newer ICX line are pretty nice, with very low dark current, and pretty low read noise (~5e-?). But the sensors are tiny. Really tiny, as in 1/3" or maybe 1/2", which is about half the size of a KAF-8300 and about 1/5th the size of a full-frame/KAF-11002 sized sensor. Would be really nice to know that Sony has some larger sensors based on their new low-noise technology coming out... ;)

We are considering other projects to augment what we're doing now - particularly when the moon is up and our main science is on hold. We're also hoping to build a bigger array at some point in the future - with 50 lenses we'd effectively have a 400 mm f/0.4 lens, with a 1m aperture.

f/0.4 @ 1m...now that would really start to surpass, just in specs, some of the really large earth-based telescopes for sensitivity.

The gains from lens arrays are not so perfect; for example, the large binocular telescope uses 2 large telescopes and achieved only about a 40% gain.

That is because the gain is relative to the square root of the number of lenses used. With 2 telescopes, you gain SQRT(2) or ~1.4x...or ~40%. With 50 lenses, the gain would be ~7.1x, or 610%. Even at full retail cost, arraying 50 400mm f/2.8 L II lenses is significantly cheaper than building a gigantic telescope on top of a mountain. With over a seven fold gain in final SNR for the cost of around $500,000, I'd say that's a steal.

CPS late returns

I think you give them a credit card in Advance in case you want to buy it ;) They would probably be annoyed if it was not back, since another person would be waiting for the equipment. They probably expect it to be a day late, but they might cancel your loan permissions if it was habitual.

Canon usually sends by 2 day, and you can return the same way. That leaves at least 5 or 6 days to check it out.

Hi,
Saw someone post an image taken using the in-camera 4K video grab from a clip shot with the 1DXmk2 in the facebook. May be some already have it??

Have a nice day.

Not sure if you noticed, but the link you provided to the video is missing from your post.
Don't have any link to any video... since it's just an image from a post in the facebook. Anyway, he did mention that it'll be available to the public soon...

Have a nice day.

430ex III overheating?

I got a 430EX III-RT for my birthday on thursday last week. I had a wedding saturday so i was excited to use it. I use a 5D Mark III along with another 430EX II. I had both on light stands triggered with my phottix odin at about 1/4 power I wasn't doing any burst shooting. simple shots of guests interacting before the reception began then all of a sudden the ex III-RT stopped firing or was really slow to recharge. I checked it and it was overheating my EX II was perfectly fine the entire time. then after a while the LCD started blinking and it wouldn't let me fire any more shots. the only way around would be to turn it on and off then i'd get more shots out of it.

I decided to take it off the stand and try it on camera bounced up at the sealing at 1/16 power while everyone was dancing I was using a lot of ambient light shooting at iso 1250 and about 1/80 shutter speed. same thing happened all of a sudden it started overheating again. operating at 1/16th power in an air conditioned room it should never do this.. I'm contemplating contacting customer support to see if i can get an exchange.

Wonderpana 11-24 front filtering solution is coming soon

I found this image on the FotoDiox Facebook page. It was posted on March 8th. It shows that huge 186mm filter holder. I think they're probably still waiting for the filters themselves to show up. It looks like a damn dinner plate, but that's what it's going to take for the Canon 11-24mm lens.

How many channels do you get with a dish like that?

f4 needed for birds if only shooting in full sun?

The osprey that has been perching on one of my ham radio towers was back today twice. I had a chance to shoot with the 400mm f/5.6 and the 100-400mm II using a 6D. The raptor takes off, and is flying around the acreage within a range of about 200 to 500 feet. The focus limiter is set to 8.5m on the prime and 3 meters on the zoom. The 8.5m minimum focus distance is an amazing advantage if I lose focus. With the prime I can still see the raptor, even if blurry, but with the zoom, if it hunts towards 3 meters, I cannot see my target. I got only three shots with the zoom today and 31 with the prime in under 2 minutes. Some with the prime were too far away to be useful, and the lighting angle was poor on other shots, but being able to lock focus was easy with the prime. I had the same problem some years ago with the 70-200mm f/2.8 II and a 2X TC III. Focus limiter is 2.5m, and once the focus got lost in the sky, I was done for. When the osprey was just taking off from its perch, the zoom had the focus nailed.

Anyone have two bodies & have them have a different shutter sound?

So a few months ago I had a problem with my 5D3's having different shutter sounds after sending it in got a shutter repair once, so I sent it in again and they fixed it but didn't tell me what the cause of the problem was.

So now after taking advantage of the incredible price decrease on the 1DX with the MK2 coming out I went ahead and purchased a new one & noticed the shutter sounded completely different to the one I already owned since October, it's... best described as less clicky? and more of a deeper sound, I've tried shooting off a few bursts at 12fps to see if it's affecting anything and so far 9/10 tries have been that it would take 31 pictures and the newer one would take 32-33.

Does anyone else have this problem & should I send it in to cps or just ignore & and accept it's because it's a older camera with close to 45k shutter shots?

Nikon recall pre release ...

Djaaf said:
You're pretty much right that finance or sales don't decide alone on the release date of a product. It's a lot more messy than that. :)

What generally happens, in my experience, is that engineering gives the date it thinks the product will be ready for. Then Production says when they'll have sufficient number of the product ready to ship. Then marketing gives the date all the marketing materials, ad services, tv spot reservation, etc... will be ready. Then you got the sales department giving a date for the education of the sellers on the new product, etc...

what happens next is that the dates get moved around a bit (engineering getting unexpected trouble with a component, Production gets a fire or a flood in one of the factories, etc...). And sometimes... you can't move the release date because of external factors (big show already planned with celebrities or politics, etc...). So... you get something out, hoping for the best and you continue to update the product in the backrooms to get a fix on what you see on the first batch...

Yes. :)

D5 Has CRAPPY Low ISO DR!!!

How much noise improvement in the 1dx II would tempt you Neuro? ;P

No doubt more than we'll see. The only tempting thing about the MkII for me is the full AF point coverage at f/8, for my 600 II + 2xIII. But I don't find that tempting enough.

but, but , but......it has 4k video capability!

Best lens for puppy photography?

ahsanford said:
Likely to be the 35 f/2 IS. First party AF + USM speed + wide for a charging puppy + reasonably fast. I'll probably grab one at the next refurb sale.

- A

Seems like a great choice! I'm going to give the 50 f1.8 STM a try although I know the focus will be slow. I don't shoot portrait so I can't really justify picking a decent prime. I might rent or 'rent' via eBay when the time comes.

PZ tests Sigma 20mm f/1.4 Art on both 5DSR and 5D2

I have the Sigma 20 ART, and I am very satisfied with it on my 5Ds. My main purpose for buying it was for northern lights shooting, and it is absolutely fantastic for that purpose. It is very usable even at f/1.4.

Those criticizing it for bad coma, I must agree that it isn't perfect. However, I compared it to pictures I took with a Canon 24LII some time ago (not side by side), and found the Sigma to be much, much better than the Canon lens in that regard.

Focus accuracy is close to perfect, I think. After an in camera AFMA calibration I haven't had a miss with it´s focus that has ruined a shot. Focusing on eyes with off center single AF-points works very well. I guess that the wide angle and comparably wide depth of field contributes to good focusing results. I should mention that I haven't tried the AF-servo mode with it.

I find it to be a little bit sharper than my Canon 16-35 f/4L IS, even when stopped down to f/8, f/11 and f/13, but it requires pixel peeping to notice it. Contrast is very good.

It is too big and heavy to be a good walk around lens, I think, but if you need that wide aperture, I believe this lens is the way to go.

Friends.
I lost my Sony RXIII. Now need a pocket camera for general family type of photography but one which will provide good IQ during emergencies where I will be without my DSLR.
I realise that this would have been discussed before but times change so asking.
Any recommendations? Pocket is key! The Sony was not.

Deaqr friend Mr. Sanj.
I would like to recommend Canon EOS-M3 ( 24 MP. ) , I have Canon EOS-M 1 ( 18 MP.), WITH 2 MORE LENSES, EF TO EF-M ADAPTER AND SPARE BATTERIES + FILTERS, For past 2 years, and I love her, and have on my belly belt all the times.
Have a great day, Sir.

Carl Zeiss Distagon 25mm f/2.0 vs. 28mm f/2.0 (ZE or ZF.2 versions)

Re: Distagon 25mm f/2.0 vs. 28mm f/2.0

tcmatthews said:
You are going to have to clarify which lenses you are talking about before you can get a clear answer. Distagon is a style of lens for all I know you could be comparing the Batis 25 f 2.0 to the Sony 28 f 2.0 or some other lenses entirely.

I'm sorry. I will edit my post / question :)

Another Sample of EOS 5D SR with Canon TS-E 24 MM. F/ 3.5 L MK II

Nice shots - and impressive gear collection! Do you use Lightroom for your RAW processing?

Dear friend Maiaibing link.
No, I use only Photoshop 5.5 to do all my Post Processing and use Canon Digital Photo Professional ( Come with EOS 5D SR ) do the Raw Processing. Well, For This Big Babe 5D SR = 51 MP, I use High level of JPG = 90% of my regular shooting, and only 10% of my most Love Scenery photos/ Cityscape Photo to use Raw files.
Have a great day, Sir.

PS, The Photo attached , The Original = 23,469 X 5,279= 73.9 MB= JPG. file, From 4 Photos combine.
