Hasselblad Launches an all New Medium Format Camera

New to the forum and this community. Just wondering, at those prices how many do they sell? saw a lens for 40K advertised and are they really worth the money?

They're worth the money in certain markets where clients (or artists) demand the absolute highest IQ. In particular, colour reproduction, tonal transitions, dynamic range, and resolution are the forte of digital medium format, as well as relieving you of a significant amount of cash!

Many of these MF digital systems are bought by rental houses, so while the number of bodies produced and sold might be quite low, the number of photographers using them is much higher.

d.

The price has dropped a lot for these as well, the top of the line digital backs used to run over $40,000.

I don't think the price is a issue for large agencies or high end photographers. They likely have several. For ordinary wedding photographers who used to use Hasselblad Film cameras, it is a big price jump, so they are likely sticking to DSLR's.

Need zoom lens for South Africa Kruger park trip

Regardless of your gear, always have it ready and don't try to cover all possibilities at the one time. Two camera bodies is ideal but on safari the best shots are often on offer when you least expect them. So having a body and lense ready to fire and getting the shot is generally more important than having the perfect camera/focal length. I have missed shots changing cameras - it sucks. Just my 2c.

TS-E 17 for tilt on 5DsR?

NWPhil: thanks for the Hartblei [= German for "solid lead" as in the chemical symbol Pb] lens link. Medium format is not something I keep taps on. Still interesting.
The in-camera level certainly is helpful. Tripod also has a bubble level, so covered form all angles there. I do understand Scheimpflug.
LDS: well understood. The question is, is IQ so disappointing that I would not use the TS-E. There's also the lens baby for similar effects, but IQ is a whole other topic. From what I gather, IQ is quite good and the added TS-feature make it a very worth-while lens.

I'll see whether there may be some deals at the Los Angeles Photoexpo on May. Otherwise, I'll just get it and have some fun with it.

Thanks again everybody for input and thoughts.

Lytro is Leaving the Consumer Camera Business

For the cost of exactly $0 every photographer already has the solution to those problems... It is stopping down the aperture.
The promise of the Lytro was that it was not necessary to stop down the aperture to place everything in focus, but rather to shift the focus from one subject to another without changing the overall depth of field, so that subject "A" would be in focus under choice "A" and subject "B" could be in focus under choice "B."

Plus, stopping down the aperture doesn't work in many real life situations, such as birds in flight or sports, where you need a high shutter speed to stop the action and you are limited by the high ISO capability of your camera. And, frankly if you are shooting with a long telephoto lens, even stopping down to f32 may not give you sufficient depth of field to keep a rapidly moving subject in focus.

...you only had to think about it for 30 more seconds to realize that almost no one wants to actually do post-exposure focus selection....

Really? So you've never shot a bird in flight where the focus was on the wing instead of the eye? Never shot a sporting event where the focus was on the ball instead of the player's face? Never shot a portrait where the right eye was in focus, but the left eye was not?

I think almost everyone would like to "actually do post-exposure focus" tweaking. The problem was that the technology was not sufficiently developed to really achieve its promise. I suspect someone else will pursue this eventually. If it is ever perfected, it will revolutionize photography in a way that would make digital seem insignificant. Imagine never again needing sophisticated autofocus systems or worrying about autofocus adjustment.

If only it worked that way. The ability to focus these cameras comes only in discrete steps. The marketing hype suggested it worked the way you wish it would have, but the reality of the math was less forgiving.

Yes, of course, the technology was nowhere near where it needed to be to be really useful. Indeed, I suspect that was one of the problems – the cameras were released prematurely. I would hesitate to even say they were "beta" versions.

But, that doesn't mean it did not have tremendous potential if it were fully developed (assuming that is even possible).

I just take issue with the idea that "no one" would want to do post-exposure focus correction, when in reality the ability to do so (if it could be perfected) would be far more disruptive and significant than the digital revolution in photography.

I don't see how post-exposure focus correction could be more disruptive and significant than the digital revolution. The digital revolution solves much bigger problems and offers vastly more utility than any focus invention.

Canon Inc. to make Toshiba Medical Systems Corporation a subsidiary

"Under Phase V of its Excellent Global Corporation Plan, a five-year initiative launched in 2016, Canon aims to embrace the challenge of new growth through a grand strategic transformation"

Indicates to me that this is the first of many such acquisitions, and although the photographic segment may shrink and receive less funding in future, a healthy Canon should ensure long-term prescence in the photo industry.

No, not the first, they have already done a huge deal that you might have missed. Approximately $9 billion USD purchases in the past year! I expect that they will wait for another year or two before spending another bunch of cash.

G9X: Can Users 'Eliminate' Hot Pixels?

My aging but still useful S95 works well in every way except it has a hot pixel. Whereas in Canon's dSLRs there are ways to 'eliminate' hot pixels, I have not been able to find a way to eliminate (in camera) S95 hot pixels.

I've downloaded the User Guide for the Canon G9X, in an effort to find out whether its in-camera capabilities include the ability to eliminate hot pixels.

I am unable to find any mention of this feature in the Canon G9X manual.

Any CR forum readers have any knowledge to bear on this one...?

I remain interested in the G9X and would be more interested in it to find that this feature does exist for this tiny 1" sensor camera.

Thanks.

Sony Bolsters Full-Frame FE Lens Lineup with New 70-300mm High-Resolution Zoom and 50mm F1.8 Prime L

Re: Sony Bolsters Full-Frame FE Lens Lineup with New 70-300mm High-Resolution Zoom and 50mm F1.8 Pri

Sony introduces a couple lens and the Canon fanboy brigade comes out and and s***s on everything. At least you're consistent. If you don't like or use Sony cameras, how about you just ignore the thread next time? You provide nothing of value here.

I for one am glad to see Sony offering some low-cost options in addition to the expensive G-master and Zeiss ones. Will make a good pairing for the A7ii and the upcoming A7iii.

An upgrade: Four emails sent, no reaction except the automatic patellar "Dear Customer" -thing.
So I called and explained that there really was one item that was delivered which is very nice but two are still missing. It's been two weeks until this idea penetrated.

I spoke english. With my Spanish...I did not try.
He promised to get the issue settled in five working days. Whatever it may mean.

An upgrade. I picked up Skype and called them. A person answered the phone, looked up my emails and said "oops, I have to do something about this". And he did and I finally got the items that the French Post had failed to deliver.

"Tombées du camion" they say about the things that get sto... you know, that vanish into another dimension where we mortals have no access. Only 'fonctionaires' do.

Review - Samyang (Rokinon) 21mm f/1.4 for EF-M

I am currently travelling in the Far East with five Canons, each having its different role: 5DS R for me and 7DII for my wife with telephotos for bird photography; a small Ixus for her handbag; the G3 X for additional travel photos; and the EOS-M + 22mm for general high quality discreet photography.

I don't care how "handsome" the Samyang-Rokinon lens is, it's not for me. The little f/2 22mm pancake is near perfection as far as I am concerned in comparison with that large MF clunker. The EOS-M with the f/2 is small enough to handle discreetly yet provide excellent quality. This evening, for example, I took my M + 22mm f/2 to a dinner reception, took several photos and then handed it to a member of staff to take a group photo - imagine doing that with a manual focus lens. I also frequently use the touch screen to simultaneously touch-focus and shoot.

Brookman annouces 8K sensor samples

There are a lot of companies doing R&D into 8K right now, and Companies like Canon are likely testing their own. A company that makes sensors has to be very careful about testing sensors from another company, lest they be accused of stealing trade secrets.

In short, it seems very unlikely to me, NHK is the one who is testing devices made with competing sensors.

In the Future, We Will Photograph Everything and Look at Nothing

I would say this is a massive fail.

The connection to Nik and "On Photography" is less than tenuous. There is much that could be contemplated about the future of photography in a mobile world, but this article barely brushes the surface (one can't even say it scratches the surface).

Sontag was incredibly prescient when she wrote "On Photography." More than 40 years later it remains nearly as current as when it was first published and is well worth reading and re-reading on a regular basis. But, I am hard-pressed to see any significant connection between her observations and the decision by Google to (possibly) discontinue upgrading a piece of software.

Canon 80D Review at The Digital Picture

extide said:
So, I currently have a T2i/550D, and just for curiosities sake decided to look at the noise sample images back to back vs my cam. http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Camera-Noise.aspx?Camera=1044&Test=0&ISO=1600&CameraComp=688&TestComp=0&ISOComp=1600
I am really surprised that they are so similar. I mean, in most of the samples, besides the higher resolution, it's hard to really tell which is which. The T2i has one of the very earliest 18mp sensors, I would have thought in the several years since there would be a more notable difference!

Me too. I find his reviews are very detailed and extremely helpful in making purchasing decisions.

Zeiss APO Sonnar T 135mm f2.0 ZE

Thanks all for sharing your art!

I started my love for Zeiss lenses with the 21mm f2.8. That has evolved ultimately into the 50 MP, 100MP and finally the 135mm APO Sonnar. I really like all of these. I use them with the 6D although they work great with the 5D3. I have the alternate focusing screen on the 6D.

Since the 135mm is the hardest of all to nail focus, I tried a test handheld using just the viewfinder (ignoring the focus confirmation), using the focus confirmation beep and red glow on the focusing point and finally live view at the highest magnification. Upon working up the 3 images and really enlarging, I could not tell any appreciable difference between them. I believe that the auto-confirm operates pretty much like auto-focus does only you are the motor and you have the wonderful long-throw focus ring...why I gave up my Canon 100 L macro and got the Zeiss.

I'm glad to see you back again, serendipidy. :)
I'm glad to see everyone back again posting.

I'm still missing my German fellow Marsu42 :-[
(last post from Oct. 2015 but seeing him active at March 18th :) )

Marsu42 also used to be an active member of the Magic Lantern Forum, but it's months I don't see him there, too. I miss him, too, he was the Magic Lantern guy of CR. I hope he's well.

I think a rule does not exist. Look at me, I'm sort of a CR addict, yet I rarely post. If you view the member list and click on "date registered" to order the list by date, you don't even need to scroll down the first page to find me. This is the first and last website I visit on my smatrphone when I wake up and go to sleep. At work, I've got 2 PCs on CR for 8-10 hrs a day (sssh, don't let my employer know...). Yet, I barely have 200 posts. There have been periods I haven't been posting for 3 months, though reading as much as I could, others like the last few days in which I posted more frequently thanks to some 5D4 rumors and the lens giveaway (BTW, congratulations to all the winners! I can't wait to know who among the CR regulars is going to receive his/her toy).

This is just to say that members, unless they cancel, or get canceled, their registration, sooner or later come back as active posters. Among some others who seem to have forever disappeared, unless they're still here with another identity, the first who come to my mind are scalesusa, M.ST, briansquibb, Erwin Herdman, crasher... I remember those few who have been banned, but these ones have not been as long as I recall, just wonder why they vanished... Pros who have retired? Enthusiasts who went enthusiastic about doing something else? Seduced by the Dark Side? Oh, well...

When I retire I'll have more time to post. When my son grows up enough, he'll spend more time with his friends and less with me during the weekend (it's happening right now) and I'll be a more participating member.

Greetings to all my CR friends (and teachers)!

Tamron 35mm VC vs. Canon 35mm II

Thank you for sharing your impressions! :)
When you decided to replace the EF 35mm F/1.4 II L, did you consider the EF 35mm F/2.0 IS, which share many features with the Tammy (weight, cost, IS etc.)?

I did think about it, but was looking for something significantly sharper. I haven't played with a copy myself, but I did look at test images online. I got spoiled by the Sigma 18-35 on my crop body. I even used it on my 5D3, and it worked pretty well at 35 and was deadly sharp. To justify buying a lens for the full frame kit, it needed to be a sharpness equal or superior to the Sigma. That's why I started with the new Cannon 1.4 II.
I see: The Digital Picture confirms the sharpness of the Tamron: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=122&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=0&LensComp=1003&CameraComp=453&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=0

It seems that Canon 35mm's corners reach the Tamron ones when both are stopped down to F/5.6.

Is there a reason why you're linking the comparison to the original 35 f/2 as opposed to the much better 35 f/2 IS?
