DpReview posts 90% Score on Sony /RII - What will the 5DSR get?

You are right that DPR mention a lot of cons with the A7RII, but in my opinion, those cons should lower their rating, and make it impossible to achieve the 90% score.

I don't follow. Does 90% represent perfection?

Does 100%?

I wondered that myself before posting, not because of the sliding scale (which I didn't realize DPR uses), but because what is "perfection?"

Either way ;)

New EF-S Lenses on the Horizon? [CR2]

macVega said:
I have used both focusings systems enuff to know that USM stands for "Ultra Sonic Motor" and STM stands for "Slow Terrible Motor"... ???

Haha so true, though I would argue Slightly (less) Terrible Motor (relative to MM) since its at least a little quieter and maybe a little smoother from the little I've used it, though really no faster and the FTM is really just a FBW system. Then again, that's essentially what I've had to live with on handheld camcorders up until this point, with the VX-2100/PD-170 through the DVX100 and the AC130A I just sold to save up for the 4.6K...but those systems were obviously much better tuned and more responsive relative to consumer technology designed for folks who don't have to rely on it to get critical focus, like STM.

Built-in automatic microadjustment possible?

its unnecessary for DPAF focus

Only in Live view would it be unnecessary. Focus calibration would still be needed through the optical viewfinder.

Try quoting my entire statement rather than trying to change the meaning by quoting just part of it.

"but its unnecessary for DPAF focus, so if that ever becomes a practical primary method of AF, AFMA may go away"

Samsung Imaging moving to Fuji?

We've lately heard about Samsung leaving the camera business here
http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=27727.msg547724#msg547724

Seems like the department will move over to Fuji.
At least the rumor website seems to think that, because they've already renamed themselves into "Fuji Rumors", see top left here

I wonder what the guys over at http://www.fujirumors.com/ think of that ;)

Canon Commemorates Production of 80 millionth EOS-Series Interchangeable-Lens Camera

Well I have 3 EOS bodies over 25 years and two of them are film... I have about 20 EF lenses, so I think it shows ratios can vary a lot.
My film cameras are not used at this time so I have only 1 EOS camera in use right now, and some of my early lenses have not
been used in 15 years or more just never got around to selling them. I'm a little surprised the number of lenses is not more given
the number of bodies they have sold. It's interesting.

Flip-screen Sample Shots!

The 60D's articulating screen was used in my case. Different strokes for different folks.

True! My shot was at an outdoor venue lit by the setting sun – I used ISO 4000, but I wouldn't go there on APS-C.

My shot was at Mango Groove's Summer Sunset concert at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. A friend of mine did all the the rigging for the concert so there was good lighting. :)

Owning APS-C and Full Frame

If I ever start shooting things that move I might be tempted to add the 7DII to my kit then again I could just rent out a 1DX - I really want an excuse to shoot with one of them!

You know what they say, "once you use a 1DX body that's black, you never go back".

+1
I can only agree on this point. For me it is really FF that makes the difference. I do see very beautiful photos of the 7D2, but when I use the 7D2 and 1Dx together, then I choose always the photos of the 1Dx at the end.

Patent: EF 20-45mm f/2.8-4

moreorless said:
You could argue this wouldn't be an entirely "new" focal length for Canon as I'v heard a few ASPH shooters say they loved the range a 16-35mm gave them on that format which would be near identical to a 20-45mm FF lens.

My 16-35 f2.8 MkI practically lived on my APS-H cameras, mainly because that was as wide as I could go with 2.8 zooms and it didn't use the weak corners. But the range from an effective 21-45 is pretty limiting and the 24-70 was too long at the wide end. I am so glad that bastard sensor size is dead.

Travel advice - road trip from NY to NY

I have not really seen the northeast, but I have been to Philadelphia twice, which I like. Independence Hall is nice at blue hour and across the street you can shoot the Liberty Bell at night through the window. (In the day there are too many reflections, though of course you can go inside and do a closeup). Downtown, maybe a mile or less away, is this funky lighted sculpture with different languages. It is on the campus of a hospital medical school, but it is right off a main city sidewalk. I think I took this from the sidewalk (or just off it). The historic waterworks (behind the art museum) is very photogenic. You can also go down inside, which is a museum with interesting old pipes and rock walls.

Panasonic's Post Focus

Its not focus stacking, focus stacking does not let you change the focus point, it increases depth of field.

It does look like a clever implementation of allowing you to move from one image to another to pick the image that is in focus on your desired subject. It takes 50 images at 30 fps and changes the focus point for each image. Then, you can move between the images to pick the one that focuses where you want it.

If the images stay in the camera, then you can focus stack them to get more resolution and depth of field.

Advice needed: AF of 5DSR for wildlife sufficient?

In my experience 5DsR AF with proper tuning is somewhat better than 5DmkIII&7dMkII (which were stellar to begin with). I got rid of all my other bodies within a month after getting 5DsR. No issues whatsoever with larger animals, but smaller birds in flight are challenging regardless the camera you use...

P.S. This is based on use with 100-400 II and 500/4 II

An Update to the EOS 70D Coming Soon? [CR1]

I would be thrilled to see a 70D firmware update to overcome the ISO compensation complaints -- but even more important would be slightly better algorithms for noise reduction and dynamic range.
The 70D, as is, is my perfect APS-c camera except that I would lust for three "C" modes on the selector & fewer "auto gizmo" modes. Can't do that with firmware (unless they include a new knob! hint... hint... hint)
I don't think that I would buy a new 70D replacement when my 70D will absolutely compliment the 5D-whatever which will be my next purchase.
Mr. Canon: Take the best of the 70D & 7DII and put them into the 5D-IV and I'll order it on day one!

Wind is turning?

I find the depreciation on the a7 series revealing. Mint, up to date Nikon or Canon gear tends to sell used for virtually the new price less the (20%) Value Added Tax in the UK. I would think that 99.9% of users can't reclaim this VAT on a new camera. This isn't the case with the a7 and a7r. Part of this could be to do with the rapid model updates that, like Nikon, increase the depreciation on the models that have been replaced, though even so Nikons hold up pretty well.

Whether this will change in time I don't know, but I do find that generally most people believe that harnessing of simple physics to allow them to optically look through their camera's lens is more desireable than doing it electronically. And hey ! Why not have a device where you don't even need the camera switched on to look through it.

Exactly! I just found out yesterday that instead of going through the arduous process of finding a spot with no light pollution where I could get the stars to line up with something interesting in the foreground I can do a screen grab from Stellarium Software, put it on one layer and any old contrejour shot of an Architectural Thing or whatever on another layer and save myself a lot of time to play games or watch videos. In fact, once we are at it, most photogenic subjects have already been photographed by much better professionals than I will ever be so what the hell...
