Canon U.S.A. Debuts Latest Imaging Products at PhotoPlus 2015

Very exciting stuff.
It's seems a major meeting not to have a new DSLR of some type to announce.

You'd think Pre-christmas they'd be trying to plug new things for the beginner intermediate enthusiast photographer.
I see they have 80ml inktanks. I don't understand why they don't even make them bigger.
I have a Canon Pro-10 and I think I can almost never do a bring with having to replace a tank first.
It would be interesting to see how easier the software is to use.
I find printing between Adobe and Canon printers (or any printer) to be very unintuitive and unnecessarily complex. After a while you get it but it's not straightforward. I'm amazed why it's not simpler.
It should be just a series of simple choices
What size paper
What size picture
How many pictures per page
What paper are you using (already loaded with every ICC profile under the sun).
What quality
Print
The fact you can have say Lightroom thinking one thing and the printer thinking something else is nuts.
I agree entirely with your views on printing I guess ICC profiles are a stab at uniformity but not all printers have selectable ICC profiles my Canon A3 printer is only designed around Canon paper and its only though trial & error that Ive learned which ones work for say Hahnemuhle fine art papers. Setting the M/C up was a nightmare particularly for wi-fi to the point Id question buying a Canon photographic printer again.

Tamron 150-600mm Reviewed

Stag and his Doe's, Red Deer, Martindale Valley Cumbria by Tom Scott, on Flickr

7DMKII 70-200mm F2.8 MKII with 2x extender F8 1/500 1250 ISO

Stag and his Doe's, Red Deer, Martindale Valley, Ullswater Cumbria

First time out with the 7DMKII and really impressed with it!

I have been out tracking the Red Deer in the Martindale valley for the last week or so. Beautiful creatures and the largest mammals in the UK. The valley comes alive with deer whaling, Its the middle of the mating season and now is the best time to go out and see them, this is a snippet of what was a huge heard of around 50!! Really incredible to watch. Haven't seen any rutting yet but hope to in the next few weeks.

Canon EOS-1D X Mark II Spec List Surfaces [CR1]

sportshooter said:
CAn Canon PLEASE increase the DR of this what $7,000 camera. Can they also implement a way for sports shooters to go through each burst to review and delete in camera ( treat each burst as sort of a collection to review to mark for keeps or delete i think NIkon does this??

That would be nice although I don't usually do much deleting on the field. Still might be nice way to manage space on cards for all day events. For wildlife shooting, though, that would be very helpful.

sportshooter said:
Why is the Nikon d4 and d4s better than this 1dx?? and WHY does anyone need more than say 12 fps?

I don't think it is? I'd love to have the better DR of the Sony sensor for daytime games, sure, but not at the expense of AF tracking if that were the tradeoff. Also, not sure if you are aware of this but you can adjust your burst rate in the menu. Personally, I'd love to have more frames to choose from when photographing a wide receiver picking off a catch. Can't tell you how many sequences I have that go ball just out of frame > ball tucked into chest and missed the actual moment of the catch.

sportshooter said:
Would be nice to have THE option to set a 1.6 crop thus turning my 70-200 into a beast of reacher if one wants that.
Also i think the AF is good but overly complicated in terms of tweeks. Most Olympics were shot in case 1 anyways so....and Nikons af is more intuitive, not over complicated-so i have heard.

Why? Crop in post. Either I'm gonna crop it or my editor will, one way or another. The only thing you'll get with a crop mode is too little field of view when the play runs too close to you. I've never understood why anyone would want this feature. Also, the AF system is as complicated as you want it to be. You can set it to switch between all point and single point with a button press if the cases are too much to think about during the action. I hate to come off as one of those smug jerks that's all "why don't you just RTFM :smughard:" but it doesn't actually hurt to be familiar with the equipment you use.

sportshooter said:
Also a way to transmit pics easily form the camera on the field of play- any point and shoot can do this for about $100 or less.

This would be awesome and is long overdue. I'd love to send some shots to my editor from the sidelines without some rigamarole.

sportshooter said:
Really iso on the 1dx over 4,000 is not good enough, sure it can shoot higher but -yuck, for 6- 7 grand i expect much more!

I shoot at 6400 pretty regularly on my 1DIV and am happy with the results, at least for sports. I think people are waaaay to picky when it comes to noise these days. No one notices grain if the shot has good drama and captures the action. People will notice if it's out of focus though!

Un compressed RAW for Sony A7R II

gsealy said:
Are not the compression algorithms used by the various camera companies 'lossless?' And once Lightroom or other photo tool knows the file structure, then that file can be read and the image can be manipulated using all the data available. It seems that all uncompressed RAW will do is to use up more space on storage card when it is not necessary.

Correct. It is even reported that the uncompressed RAW format writes 14-bits into a 2-byte space, meaning there are extra 80 million extra zeros (give or take). My only guess why they would do that is to have a file structure in place for 16-bit sensors and ADCs.

However it is likely the architecture of the A7 series (thus far) doesn't facilitate lossless compression (inadequate general resources; diverting cycles to file management could adversely affect performance). Maybe about the time the A7IV comes out, it will. Until then, I'll see how uncompressed treats me. May look into computer-side DNG conversion to cut down on upstream bandwidth to my cloud backups.

Sigma 20mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Appears

The MTF charts do not inspire much confidence personally.
Sigma-20mm-f1.4-DG-HSM-Art-lens-MTF-chart.png

At maximum aperture there is a massive astigmatism at MTF-10 and significant dropoff in performance for the outer third of frame. MTF-30 also drops to poor levels in the outer third of the image circle. The lens will have to do better than that to earn my dollar. If I need to crop to APS-H to get a usable image then what good is it really?

I guess I'll have to see how much it improves on stopping down. If there's no big improvements by f/2.8 (especially in the outer third of the frame ) then there's no real threat of me selling my 24L II. Just my personal take...

Looking forward to seeing some tests.

The real problem with Canon sensor technology?

PhotographyFirst said:
Wanna know the true reason Canon has not improved low ISO DR much in the last few years?

Because idiots like myself value workflow, ergonomics, quality lenses, reliability, high ISO performance, etc... over having low ISO DR of 14+ stops. As long as us stupids keep buying Canon's innovative and high performance lenses, there is little incentive for Canon to put money into something that will kill short term net profits. If only we were smarter people, we would realize how low ISO DR trumps everything else. We would ditch Canon and let them go bankrupt or be forced to improve their "crap" sensors.

I mean, bracketing my shots when needed and then exposure blending them is like pulling teeth compared to not having the lenses I want to use, or having to fiddle with adapters, or having poor live view implementation, or tiny buttons, or poor customer service, or poor reliability, or poor battery life, or poor ergonomics, or EVFs. or lossy RAW files, or no aperture control in Live View, or no histograms, or AFMA with only one focal setting, or having to press two buttons at once to change ISO, or... well you probably get the idea. ;)

Getting rid of my Canon gear for another brand would be like kicking an attractive woman out of bed for eating crackers. Sure I would prefer her to not get crackers in the bed, but why ruin a good time? :)

+1
Exactly my thoughts. The lenses have far more influence on IQ than the sensor. I cannot see anything close to the 24-70 2.8 II in the Sony lens lineup. Adapters are no alternative. There is no sense in switching to a smaller, lighter body, when using the old and heavy glass with adaters. The only downside of my camera is size and weight. But from my perspective there is currently nothing on the market with the same IQ which has half the weight and size.

Patent: A Different Take on the EVF

scrup said:
Just build 2 cameras one with EVF and one without.

or

If canon really wants to be bleeding edge, build a camera that is compatible with Virtual Reality glasses.

This patent is stupid. Part of the screen needs to be high resolution for it be usable as a viewfinder. Cost of making this will be more than the camera itself.

You are assuming that its on a high end camera, I would not assume that.

Patents do not guarantee cost effectiveness. A patent gets used when it is cost effective for its intended purpose.

A cheap magnifier for a standard LCD versus a expensive EVF. No one said it would be a super high resolution, it does not need to be to compose a image in bright sunlight.

It will likely never happen, but point and shoot users who have only the rear LCD might be happy with a cheap add-on that is compatible with a low cost camera.

Backpack for Hiking

There are some great and concise replies here. Please also do a forum search and find the multitude of previous threads where (we that hike) have all discussed this heavily. You'll see a repeating theme of how important having a decent quality hiking backpack is (first priority) and then adding some camera gear to that. NOT the other way around! Unless of course you are on a day hike, then it really doesn't matter because you aren't really hiking and camping, you are just walking a short distance with camera gear on your back along with some snacks and water.

photo blinds for birds

As far as dedicated photo blinds, I have seen very few in actual State Parks. Some of the National Wildlife Refuges come to mind, such as two blinds at Lee-Metcalf in Montana and the Tijuana River Valley(San Diego) has large barriers you can shoot through. Private reserves like the Santa Clara Ranch have some well situated facilities but they come at a price.

Camera Prices for Christmas

The linked article made me wonder just what sales and prices we will see this holiday season. There have historically been some fantastic 1 day deals starting in October and going thru December as dealers panic and dump inventory. The Final quarter of the Canon Fiscal Year ends December 31, and they always try to blow out as much inventory as possible. They are likely shipping sales inventory to Dealers already, in preparation.

If you have a Camera or lens in Mind, set your price and stick to it. When it pops up, you may only have minutes or hours to jump on a deal.

http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news/some-pre-holiday-shopping-advice-101815.html

"Retailers are a bit nervous in the weeks leading up to the start of the 2015 holiday shopping season. It remains to be seen how consumers will react.

Will they spend the money they've saved this year on gasoline? Or, will they use that money to pay existing bills and add to savings?

The evidence so far suggests shoppers will be careful with money and look for bargains. Heading into the holiday season, sales have been lackluster and even the National Retail Federation predicts only a modest increase in sales over last year."

42MP Sony sensor released in another camera... **and it's not a Nikon**

ahsanford said:
I keep forgetting that the 36 MP Sony sensors in Nikons came out in Nikon bodies first, as the A7 platform was still in development.

With this gen, of course, Sony bodies got the sensor hotness first:

A7R II: June 10, 2015

RX1R II: October 15, 2015

Nikon D820/D850/D900/whatever: [Crickets]

I appreciate that you can't just design a camera body and slap in a sensor when it becomes available. I also appreciate that the Nikon is worth waiting for compared to the Sony -- the Nikon variant of these Sony sensors (D800/D800E/D810) are generally regarded as better top-to-bottom cameras for a host of reasons.

But there comes a point that the new sensor hotness ain't so new and hot anymore. What happens if the Nikon D820/D850/D900/Dwhatever doesn't come out until a year after the A7R II?

- A

Rumor is part of the Exmor licensing agreement is that no-one other than Sony gets to use new sensors until six months after release.

So, they got their product out as early as possible without compromising the holiday season. If the rumors are true then January is going to be a busy month.

What is the next Sigma Art prime?

StudentOfLight said:
Where is the money for Sigma? Sales & Marketing tend to target low-hanging fruit first.

true but a well made 85 prime is a portrait photographer's best kit. also not every one uses canon glass. look at the 50mm art 1.4 900 usd. with a large selection of glass already its sells.

more then low fruit is involved

Just bought a 6D! -shutter count shows new or used?

pixyl said:
I just bought my first FF: a 6D, upgrading from a 50D. :)
This will hopefully be the boost in IQ I've been longing for.
I got a great deal because the store had it as a customer return, but it looked brand new and unused in the box with all the packaging intact. Even the charger was taped in a plastic bag.

So I bought the Shuttercount utility (Mac) to check if/how much it had been used and it showed 256 actuations. The battery menu said 0. Prior to connecting it to my Mac via USB I had inserted a memory card and formatted it in the camera (I read about someone else getting confused because he/she had moved over a memory card from another camera so the shutter count somehow continued where it last left off for some reason).

So is it likely I received a brand new, unused camera (the 256 shots tested at the Canon factory) or should a new, out of the box camera show 0 actuations?

New cameras have "0" shots. Canon resets the counter to zero after calibrating the camera.

So, as the store told you, you received a returned camera (which has no Canon Warranty), just whatever the store provides.

The customer returned it for a reason, and may not have told the store the whole story. Make sure the store provides a written Warranty, if it says open box on the sales slip, Canon Technically calls it used and will not Warranty a used Product.

Big Print from Europe Trip

I work at a photo lab so it is easy for me to get things printed and framed. This is a framed 40x60 inch print they just did for me. It was taken February of this year on a trip to Switzerland, France, England. This is dawn at Mont Saint Michele, France.

Canon 5D3 and 70-200 2_8 L (non IS), Manfrotto carbon fiber tripod. I mean the original shot. This self portrait is same camera and tripod but 24-70 4 L lens.

I would love to see other people's travel photos that you have printed and displayed. Please post shots of them (as they hang in your home or office).
