Zeiss Otus 55 ZF.2 mod to ZE?

Today I have purchased my Otus 55 ZF.2. Interestingly, the seller admitted he had only used the lens on a sony mirrorless body and never tried to fit the novoflex adapter that he sold together with the lens.

To our surprise, the novoflex adapter did not fit on the Zeiss ZF.2. It matches the lens bayonet, but when turning the adapter to click it in place it stops at about 20 to 30 % of the amount of rotation needed to click it in place. :o

It is the original Novoflex adapter and mechanically, everything looks fine. The seller gave me additional discount because of this, so I took the 'risk'. Any suggestions / ideas?

Edit: I do realize that Nikon bayonet turns the "wrong" way compared to Canon, so that is not the cause :)

Update: for some reason, when the aperture ring on the lens is set to f/16, it clicks in place smoothly ;D
Why does it matter?

11-24mm f/4L review at LensTip

The 11-24 has very well corrected distortion - about 1.2% at infinity. High distortion is just a product of using a small test chart at close range and the center being physically closer than the edges (=change in magnification = distortion).

The 11-24 is limited by coma / astigmatism, while most lenses that are labeled as having "coma" actually suffer from astigmatism and oblique sagittal spherical aberration. It does provide an excellent level of correction, however.

5D Mark III shutter sounds weird

Sounds a lot like what I went through a while ago, http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=18743.0 , ended with a new shutter assembly, mirror box and focusing sensor.

Good luck,

Chris

Hi Chris, how much did it cost you in the end? I have a similar issue with a dropped 5DIII. It'd be nice to know the worse case scenario before I put it into Canon UK.

So to give you all the info, I signed up for CSP, dropped the camera off in L.A. for repair, they emailed me with a quote to replace the shutter assembly and mirror box, I complained, they ignored me, I told them to fix it, my wife got involved and she has 15k Twitter followers, Canon emailed her to have me email them, they said they would look into it and did, the adjusted total went from $900 to $300 and then they tell me the focusing assembly needed (past tense) to be replaced but we will not charge you and then I had a good working camera.

Or the simple answer, $369.20

Good luck,

Chris

Silverfleet Capital to Buy Hasselblad?

retroreflection said:
Various companies looking at the books and then NOT buying usually means that there is a fundamental and nearly insoluble problem.

To me it sounds like a poisonous cocktail of sharply decreasing market from above, an 5Ds(R) eating them from below, an owner who likely to want a lot for the Hasselblad name.

Even if you collected all the MF/LF companies into one, would you be able to make a sustainable business?
Even Canon and Nikon is getting pushed hard from the cellphones.

Review: Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II Via TDP

the test doesn't mean as much[/i]. Perhaps I'm just looking for him to be a bit more critical -- curve to a B to make the real A's really stand out.

I understand what you mean, but for me, the question is, should we ask for or do we need more critical/negative reviews that emphasize every negative aspect of a lens, big or small? I'm not so sure. Now, focusing issues are a big deal, I think, compared to for example vignetting at wide open apertures. I really do want to know everything about usability issues that prevents me from getting the shot, and that can't be solved in post. Therefore, I think it is important to emphasize such issues.

TDP sure isn't my only source of information. I use photozone a lot and many reviews on YouTube, but I always get back to TDP to get the more balanced and thorough view.

manual focus lenses and accurate eye sight

www.focusingscreen.com provides screens for the 5DIII and 5DS/R. AF is no problem, but about -2/3 stop EC is required.

I see that focusingscreen.com. has no products for the 7DII. Am I simply behind the times costwise, or does anyone else's jaw drop along with raised eyebrows at their prices? ??? Comments? ...and what does NT$ indicate?
NT$ is Taiwanese dollars. Considering they are handmade (or adapted rather), they will be a bit more expensive than a standard Canon screen. The 7DII have support from Canon, so there is no need for custom made screens.

As usual, great review. :)

This seems to be a really good lens, and I'm still torn between it and the 35 f/2 IS (or even the Zeiss 35f/2)...
Too much good choices.:D

Djaaf.

It is a tough decision. I already own the 35 IS and love it, otherwise I would be very, very tempted by this lens. If I didn't already own the 35IS I'm still not 100% sure what I would do.

Would you pay for a larger buffer?

pwp said:
Deeper buffer is always valuable to have tucked away even if you only need to call on it from time to time. Particularly with my 5DIII and less so with the 1D4 I tend to hit the buffer limit at the most frustrating moments...at a peak moment during an action sequence, or worse, while shooting aerials where there are limited and expensive opportunities to shoot the target subject. Sometimes for action I'll reluctantly choose mRAW simply to access deeper buffer.

Because of the almost infinite different shooting styles, some photographers will never come close to experiencing buffer limits. But for others it can be confronted on a daily basis, and needed to be managed...usually at the expense of unbridled creativity. So yes, I would pay $$ for deeper buffer. That might simply mean upgrading to 1DX.

-pw

+1. Some times I don't want to carry the 1Dx - like the small form factor of 5D or higher MP of 5DS but need a larger buffer with action. I would gladly pay a bit extra to avoid buffering out. Cheaper to add extra buffer to camera than upgrade all my cards to absolute fastest versions.

Canon Ranked As One of the 2015 Best Global Brands by Interbrand

...I like Canon products, just don't respect that sort of press release.

Would you rather do business with a company that is not ranked among the best brands?

Canon didn't make this up. A third party conducted the survey and compiled the list. Nothing wrong with Canon letting people know about it.

I'd rather do business with a reputable company. "The SCO Group" was not a reputable company. Any corporation making unsubstantiated claims about its leadership in a given industry - especially when there is evidence to the contrary - is just making it difficult for people to believe anything else that corporation might publish.
I'm not saying this is the case with Canon. I'm just reacting to the "...a leader in..." propaganda.

The budget photographer's 400mm dilemma

I don't see owning the 70-200 and the 100-400mm ridiculous they are very different lenses but can be considered similar depends how you use them. My 70-200mm is a bread and butter wedding/portrait lens and the 100-400mm will be used for Motorsport and wildlife. My 70-200mm did both with a 2x extender because the mki 100-400 performed similarly now the 100-400mm is much better and it's focusing distance is amazing and the sharpness with a 1.4 is impressive its truely a versitile lens. Although owning both is costly if your making money with them it's not so much of an issue.

The 70-200mm with a 2x is a great combo imo but the bokeh is nasty and it's slow at times unless it locks on the first frame so I'm looking forward to getting the 100-400mm

Patent: Lens Tilt Shift Mount Adaptor

Yes.
These kind of EF to EF adaptors already exist, they turn every lens into a macro lens:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Macro-Tilt-Canon-EOS-EF-Lens-to-Canon-EOS-Mount-Adapter-5D-II-III-60D-650D-700D-/400511869484?hash=item5d405e222c

I don't see why the canon macro lenses wouldn't work. They should retain infinity focus as the adaptor takes up the space between the sensor and the lens where the mirror box would usually be.

Improvements in menu and viewfinder info

RGF said:
Yes But

nice improvement, but that does not standard menus between other cameras.

They could add mirror lock up and then delay which is in the 5Ds/R.

I can agree with your thoughts there about. However, where can you find that back in other industries. Building in features of a new product in an older product means also lost sales. That's the reason is does only happen very rare. In adobe CC you get it, but you have to pay every month and that recurring bill will go on.

I would even pay for a few updates on the firmware of my 5Diii, if for example EC in M with auto-iso was included. But I do understand that this will create a lot of troubles in servicing this camera with a next firmware update for new GPS device, new lens,... I think this stays a dream for us, however for Canon (and Nikon, Sony just the same) it's an opportunity to sell us a new model.

what body would you pic

I did a safari last year and a month ago. Besides mammals, I also like to photograph birds, static but also in the flight.
Last year I used the 1Dx with the 200-400. However for birds, I wanted more mm.
This year I used the 1Dx with 600 +1.4 attached. What a combination, just keep it stable on a bean bag or a gimbal head on a tripod. This combination however is hard to use for bif, as it is not that easy to find the bird through a 840mm. For that reason I used my 1Dx with 300 2.8 with/without 1.4 extender. You need the high speed to get more shots during the short period you can track the bird. 7D2, which I also have, does have the speed, is very quiet, but the photos will never show the same quality as FF. The 5D3 is good for use for static birds, but with only 6 fps, not the best camera for bif.

So for me only one camera for birds, and that's for sure the 1Dx.
