GAS - what to get next

degos said:
70-200 is a 'popular' option, but in my experience pretty useless. Too wide at the short end and too short at the long end unless you're shooting in known venues of a certain size.

So don't just run out and buy one because it's an opticaly-good lens; try to recall what you shot with your f4 and determine whether a couple of primes might work better.

Super-fast 50mmm / fast 135mm / moderate-fast 300mm is a killer combo, for example. Not a lot of general usage they can't cover. You have the first one already.

Photo-clubs in my experience are so pre-occupied with running their own competitions that the members didn't want to divulge their techniques, all they wanted to achieve was 'teh win!!!'. I mean, sometimes they wouldn't even say where a photo was taken. Experience varies, I suppose.

degos, you make some good points and I agree that while the 70-200 is a popular and great lens while it's usability can be limited at times. This is why I took so long to invest the money in mine. I hardly used the f/4 IS version myself. And it's heavy to carry as an extra lens. But when the times arrive that I can use it effectively, I'm really glad I got it! To me, the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II is a more of a purpose driven lens that delivers on those purposes. It's not an early lens purpose, it's a need based or luxury lens purchase after several other lenses are in place. For me, it gets used a lot for indoor swimming on the 7D-II where my 5D3 is on the other hip with a 24-70, 24-105 or 16-35 installed and ready to go. It also gets used a lot on any portraits where I have the time and the light to change lenses and positions, esp outdoors.

What lens would you buy.. if You....

I don't own either one, but if you are looking for a wildlife lens that is light, sticking with canon, I believe your only options are the 300 and 400L's. I left off the 100-400 as you listed the 70-200 in the list as a potential weight problem. I hear good and bad on the 300, but the 400 gets praises for cost/weight if you can live without is and with f5.6.

300L II and 400L II are way hevier than the 70-200L IS II.
The lightest and most flexible combo, from what you said, would be the new 100-400L II + 7D2. This combo is very hanholdable and with good technique you'll amazing results.

The person you quoted was not referring to the VII f/2,8 lenses if you check the last sentence.

Use caution...
I did say that the other links on the site are sketchy... i have tried other tools for click count and this is the one that works the best.

I have never had a problem with EOSMSG but if you try it, do so with caution... No sweat off my brow, just an answer to the OP...

Patent: Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L IS

Just a thought: looking at the original patent diagram in the link, it says that the patent is for a 24-70 f2.8 IS, but not necessarily and L series unit.

My guess, based on recent lens releases, is that Canon would more likely issue this as a 24-70mm f2.8 IS STM lens to complement their other recent STM offerings aimed at video users and the more entry-level market.

The 24-70mm f2.8L v2 just came out relatively recently, and they just released the 24-105mm IS STM (non-L) in 2014. An STM version of this format would fit their strategy.

I can't imagine they would be so soon to replace that recent version 2 L lens with an IS version and expect their higher-end users to flock to it... or maybe not?

BlackRapid straps scratching up camera / CarrySpeed comparison review

chilledXpress said:
I had the same scratches with a 7D and a 5D3 using BR swivels. Switched to a Carry Speed mount as it was the same as a Spyder ball pin. No more scratches but not digging a more restrictive feel. Aside from the scratching, the BR swivel and pin assembly has failed me. I dumped a 5D3 and 50L onto the cement loading my kid into the car. Only suffered minor cosmetic damage but not fun watching my rig bounce around on the pavement. Talked with BR... they say it can happen and should be inspected often, being replaced with any sign of wear. Mine was about a year half old with heavy use. It appeared that the pin slowly widened the opening enough to get cocked in there sideways, it locked up and then popped out. They did offer a replacement but that did not inspire any confidence in me.

Now using Gordy hand straps but looking for alternatives to all off these options. Anyone use the Joby pro set ups?

It is strange how people would want to hang what could be several thousand dollars worth of camera gear from what looks like a 25 cent (maybe) piece of swivel hardware.

The Sun Sniper swivel piece is far better.

Alternative to YN-622C for AF Assist

At evening events my 1D MkIV is pretty hopeless when it comes to low light AF. The AF assist performance on the 600EX-RT is modest to say the least when used with the 70-200 f/2.8isII. It needed some help...

So my two Yongnuo YN-622C have been my go-to accessory for AF Assist for the past few years (2012). With time they have become a bit knocked around and recently erratic. Batteries are charged, all terminals are clean and factory reset performed OFTEN. Anyone with YN-622C's will know the pattern thrown by the AF Assist is pretty weird, but it's been the best we've got.

Is there an updated alternative to the YN-622C? All I use it for is for AF Assist, when I need triggers I use the amazing Phottix Odins. The YN-622C pass-through design is what makes it so useful to me as I sit the 600 EX-RT on top of it. Yongnuo does make a standalone hotshoe-mount AF Assist http://flashhavoc.com/yongnuo-yn12af-af-assistant/ but it's not a pass-through design.

A web search has not come up with a newer alternative to the YN-622C, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. If not, I'll just get a couple more YN-622C's.

Best places to photograph bald eagles?

The Oregon and Washington coasts. That is where I would go. Reelfoot Lake in Tennessee has a winter population... but I would prefer to have some green in the background. There's a lady I follow on Google+ that is always posting shots from the Oregon coastal beaches. Beautiful there. I'm sure Alaska would also offer great opportunities and even more wildlife to photograph (bears, moose, etc...)

70D upgrade?

The consumer cameras get updated more frequently than Pro models, a 80D will likely arrive next year, possibly this fall. I have not heard any solid Rumors yet.

Beware, there are lots of websites with really unreliable rumors. Canon Rumors grades the quality of Rumors. CR1 is just something to discuss, and is not a reliable Rumor.
CR2 is from a source that tends to provide good information, and there is a backup providing similar info.
CR3 means its confirmed, and seldom falls thru.

Another Site to check is Keith Coopers North Light Images. It has a huge amount of valuable and accurate photography and printing information, and as a secondary feature, Keith Summarizes rumors so you can see ones that have been posted over time.

Which Lens to Take

NancyP said:
My favorite hiking kit for exploratory photography (as opposed to specific landscapes in mind) is an APS-C (mine is the 60D, but SL1 or 70D or 7D/D2 might be a choice too) and EF-S15-85mm f/3.5-5.6. You can cover a lot of territory with that range, and I believe that it goes to 0.25x, so closeups are decent. Cotton Carrier vest. Camera is kept available and hands kept free for poles/.

In a similar spirit, I took the SL1 + Tamron 18-270 to Philmont last summer. I built my own lightweight rig to carry it across my chest between the shoulder straps and I carried a EF-S 10-22 in the pack for use in camps to capture more story during the activities. The only thing I wanted to take but decided to leave behind to reduce weight right before we departed was the small 270EX-II flash and batteries. We were on the trail for 10 days and it worked great. Love the SL1. Now it's sort of a "beater" camera I use for all kinds of misc things including handing off to other adults at campouts to get more shots.

24-70 f/2.8 DG OS Art Next from Sigma [CR1]

drmikeinpdx said:
I've read too many stories about autofocus problems with Sigma lenses on Canon bodies and have experienced some myself.

I'd be surprised if many professional photographers would take a chance on the rumored Sigma. At F/2.8 you need consistent autofocus.

Perhaps if they price it low enough, they could sell some to consumer-level photographers.

Perhaps it is because more people have had no problem with their SIGMA art lenses and have not bothered to write posts on the Internets Tubes. That is the problem with making decisions based on internet postings.. you are really not getting a representative sample of the population.

What will fill the gap of 7D? 70DS R?

David - Sydney said:
Is the 7D end of sale now and if not, what would replace it? 70D is newish and so is 7D Mkii but there seems to be a gap to me.

Not so, as the 70d inherited a lot of features from the 7d1 (and even the new Rebels have a decent af system though missing afma), Canon is covered in the lower ralms. Not that they would have a choice with these price tags as there's a lot of competition from Sonikon here.

In the premium market, the 7d2 offers some unique features so Canon will try to make some $$$ unless the competition catches up and the price will be lowered. I don't see the business requirement for having a camera body every $500 step.

Canon EOS Rebel SL2 Coming in August? [CR1]

mb66energy said:
exquisitor said:
mb66energy said:
The EOS M is really compact if paired with the 2.0 22 but really awkward to use just
for medium slow "action".
With the EF 2.8 40 and the EF-S 2.8 60 via adapter it gives me the better focal lengths but is far from
compact. Using EF lenses via adaptor eats up the compactness of the EOS M ...

An SL2 is a very valid option and might add to a "shooting ready moderately poor man's trinity":
24mm: EF 2.8 24 classic + 5D classic
64mm: EF 2.8 40 + SL2
100mm: EF 2.8 100 Macro classic + 5D classic

Very interesting! I also have 5D I with a bunch of primes (14, 24, 35, 50 and 100 mm) and have considered to buy EOS M as an all-around tool because of light weight and small size. But now I see SL1 would be also a nice option. What is your experience with EOS M? As I understand from your comment about speed, it is rather not very responsive camera. Aside from this there is only screen for composing and I really like the OVF. Would you consider SL1/SL2 to be a better option?

EOS M has great IQ, especially with the EF-M 2.0 22 ...

and the EF 2.8 40 + EF-S 2.8 60 mm and there the size advantage of EOS M vanishes compared to the SL-1.
One has to compare the size of the naked SL-1 with the EOS M + EF-M2EF adaptor.

SL 1: 117 x 91 x 69 mm WIDTH x HEIGHT x DEPTH
SL 1: 117 x 91 x 125 mm with EF-S 60

EOS M: 109 x 66 x 127 mm with adaptor + EF-S 60
EOS M: 109 x 66 x 57 mm with adaptor
EOS M: 109 x 66 x 32 mm

With the EF-S 60 mounted there is no real advantage in terms of size - except some millimeters in width and height. Add the advantages of an SL-1 or it's next incarnation:
- OVF (including checking the scene with USM lenses without any power consumption)
- built in flash
- 380 vs 230 shots per battery charge

You can add an EVF to the EOS M3 or a flash to the EOS M but than the HEIGHT of the camera might exceed the height of the SL-1.
The only advantage I see in an EOS M3 with EVF is to have a good viewfinder option for VIDEO. But
I decided for me that I have to go a long way to be a good photographer, but I am to old to be a good
videographer ...

So my answer to your question:
I would prefer the SL-1 and ... if the SL-2 has a fully equipped Wifi remote control with live view I would even prefer it much more!

Best - Michael

Thank you, Michael! SL1/2 looks really attractive.
It is very sad that there is only one prime in the EF-M line. I hope Canon will change this and bring more lenses in the system. EOS M3 looks really interesting, but if I would attach my 50/1.4 to the camera via adapter, the length would be nearly the same as 5D+50/1.4 or SL1+50/1.4. The weight would be even larger than with SL1 with 770 g vs 700 g (5D+50/1.4 is 1200 g).

Any good reason not to buy a 1Ds III (asking for purchasing advice).

Hi docholliday.
Thanks for your input, I didn't get the cheap camera, I wasn't willing to risk that it was a scam, but I still intend to go this route at some point in the future, on a bang for buck level I'm still convinced that this is a good value camera. Unless my wife feels compelled to buy me a 1Dx at some point! ;D

Cheers, Graham.

Do you care about 4K?

mnovaksan said:
I care about 4k. That said I'm on the advisory board of an LA motion picture studio, so maybe it's not for everyone. A few reasons why.
  • Quality - 1080p looks better when the original footage is shot on 4k, and then downsized for distribution.
  • Becoming ubiquitous - Even my iPhone 6 can shoot 4k. The quality issue is important
  • Better Compression available - HEVC/H.265 encoding is becoming increasingly the standard for distribution. Much better compression than h.264. So not nearly the drain on broadband distribution.
  • Archive quality - When I'm shooting footage of my family or professionally, I want it to look good on the screens of 2025, not just the ones of 2015.

Completly agree. I am an entusiast phograper and video maker. No doubt 4k make sence. I have the imac retina and a Samsung 4k Tv. Shoot 4k with ShoGun and A7s. No doubt you can see the difference, however HD is also nice with this camra. A higher end camra like FS7, will even look better.
Seems to me people are putting up agruments because they don't have the tools themselfs.........

DR - how measured and what is it on 1Dx, 5DM3, ...

...what is the correct way to think about DR.

The correct way to think about DR is that Canon doesn't have enough, and Sony and Nikon have plenty. If anyone tries to suggest that the additional DR of Sony and Nikon isn't of all that much practical benefit in most situations, then the correct way to think about DR is that more DR means more stops of shadow lifting, and if you cannot lift the shadows at least 4 stops then your camera is unusable.

Help me decide... New camera for Iceland in Sept

MintChocs said:
My thoughts would be to get the 6D, it's the best Canon sensor (apart from the 1Dx). Use that with the 16-35 for the landscapes. It's better to have two bodies in case one fails plus constant changing of lenses allows more dust into the camera body not something you want when shooting landscapes at f16. They both use the same battery. If you don't have a few filters like graduated ND, polariser then look into that.
+1. Carrying 2 camera bodies with lenses is heavier but at the same time very convenient (I am talking from experience 1 month ago...)
