Why my camera always sticks to ISO 400 when using external flash in AUTO ISO?

I still baffles me that so many huge multinational corporations can get basic menu and firmware functionality so wrong.
If there's anything people should be in an uproar about it's stuff like this.

we have had many discussions re. Canon's poor implementation of Auto-ISO on many/most of its cameras. Every time the topic was downplayed and led Off-topic in the usual way by assorted Canon fanboys around here. I have given up expecting anything from Canon. Especially when it is something really simple and really useful that could be implemented really easily by way of a firmware update.
It is sad and disappointing to hear that situation that could be easily solve remains, as others have mentioned, not yet solved by Canon. My P&S camera does increase or decrease the ISO based on the environment light, even using flash for better exposure.

70-200/2.8 IS II - wrong lens for me?

using a zoom mostly at both ends is pretty common. its still one lens instead of two.

Is it? I feel weird looking through the metadata for my photos and realizing that, of shots taken with that lens, almost none are at focal lengths in between the ends stops of it.

Do you shoot events?

If so, the IS and ease of switching focal lengths makes the 70-200mm the clear choice. The image quality isn't your concern, it's your clients', and apparently they've been more than pleased thus far.

Or do you shoot portraits or for personal work? In that case, just get what you want. I'm a poor and very inexperienced photographer so the 70-200mm f2.8 II IS still wows me despite its obvious limits, but when I switch to an 85mm f1.4 (I haven't tried the f1.2) I get nicer background separation and similar sharpness, and I only own a 200mm f2 AI Nikkor in "user" condition, but it is magic, with a much more captivating look on my 5D III than the 70-200mm f2.8 II IS, which is relatively clinical. The 200mm f2 IS Canon is my dream lens.

You've answered your own question. You've outgrown the gear you have. So move on. Those who claim you should do otherwise still haven't outgrown it (as I haven't yet).

That said, "zoom with your feet" isn't just a dumb adage. Obviously I have a given focal length in mind for each photo I take, though I'll cheat with a zoom a few mm here or there to get the framing right. But I, too, find 50mm, 135mm, and 200mm to be the most useful fields of view, and will often default to 70mm anyway.

who is using the EF 24-70 f4 L IS

I took a walk around yesterday shooting with the 24-105. I went out again today with the 24-70 and took many of the same shots. It was quite something to compare them directly...this is a quick summary of my observations:

- At 24mm, the 24-70 BLOWS PAST the 24-105 in the corners. The difference is more dramatic than I realized...

- Distortion: 24-70 wins hands down.

- at 50mm, the 24-105 is "punchier" - with some extra sharpness - the difference is more noticeable wide open and/or with a close subject.

- Macro: Given the time of year, I found the 24-70's "macro" mode to be quite useful for the flowers and roses I came across. No substitute for the 100 Macro, which is nothing short of superb, but it gets me closer than any of the other "regular" lenses. Not a strong point of the 24-105, I must say. That said, it can be a bit of a hassle to switch back and forth between "macro" and normal focal lengths...it requires two hands..

____________

Conclusion is relatively unchanged. Both lenses have great strengths and also glaring weaknesses. I was lukewarm on the 24-70 but after today, I think I convinced myself to hang onto it.

- I would prefer the 24-70 for the following: Landscape, architectural, macro (casual), inanimate objects

- I would prefer the 24-105 for the following: Events and people photography

They both have their place in my collection.

ELPH135 help

Will a USB cord be able to charge the camera? The USB cord from my GPS is able to transfer photo into my computer, but can it also charge the camera?

How do I disable the digital zoom function? I notice the digital zoom starts to kick in once I go over 8x, it's getting annoying because I have to keep looking back to the zoom value to make sure I don't go over 8x.

Is there a forum or section on this forum devoted entirely to this ELPH135?

What features would you most like to see added to the new 5DS and 5DSR?

2. Better battery life. I don't know what it is about Canon's most recent bodies but they're giving the batteries a really hard time. 600 shots for a pro body sounds really bad.

I was equally surprised when moving from crop 60d to full frame 6d - it's just above 1000 shots average now (with some image reviewing and gps on) while with the 60d I could shoot myself silly on just one battery.

On my 5d mkII with battery grip, I have not managed to run out of battery in a single day of shooting with loads of live view. The 5dSR is not a snap-shot camera, it's not a rapid fire sports body, so I predict that number of shots taken on it in a day is even lower. If concerned, get a spare battery, easy to switch out. Just as easy as a CF card.
Longer battery life is a double edged sword, as it comes with more weight. No free lunch here.

Looking forward to the pre-order to come in.

Smartphones Already Won -- Laforet

Actual shipments in 2014
Forecasted shipments for 2015

CIPA2015Forecast by alabang, on Flickr

Point & shoots is the most affected in drop in sales.

Interchangeable lenses and bodies the least affected.

People on photo forums will still buy dedicated still cameras.

People who dont will probably use what they have until it is too expensive to fix or just get a new smartphone.

Lighting advice

lux said:
Is the 7' and/or the 64" pcb system too large for speed lights? More than one?
For the 64" PLMs, I use two Yonguo 565 EX II mounted in a home made version of the DIYP Double Flash Bracket that puts both flashes close to the axis of the umbrella:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/811643-REG/DIY_LK_DFB_Double_Flash_Bracket_Kit.html

Set the flash to 24mm or use the wide angle pop out lens and one should work fine. It all depends upon you subject. I prefer to use two flashes to cut down on output level and recycle time. This also extends battery life. Typically, I use 1/16 power or less for one or two subject portraits. I also shoot larger groups for my kids grade school and use two 64" PLMs with two YN 656s each. To get 4-5 rows of kids properly lit, you need the light source about 20 feet back (maybe more). This is when I dial up the power to about 1/4. ISO range is 400 to 800 for the larger groups with aperture at f8. For larger groups, I sometimes choose not to use the diffuser fabric.

New Camera - Canon 6D markii or 5D mark iv

There is the rumor that Sony will be announcing the new A7RII around Mid May.

Also the A9 which is rumored to be a pro level camera compared to the A7 series.

An upgrade to the A7R would be very nice. If the firmware works well and there are adapters for Canon lenses, I'll buy one.

Review: Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG Art by DXOMark

...and to throw in a couple of creative/real-world shooters' pennies:

There's no "MACRO" designation on this new Sigma. The older 24mm f/1.8 MACRO is a favourite of mine - I've lots of great photos of birds, mammals, kids etc that I'm not sure I'd have gotten with either of these lenses!

PS. for anyone not obsessing over charts and datawafflings I highly recommend the old Sigma 24mm f/1.8 MACRO!

Not to be mean... but how does this person/group get work?

unfocused said:
This group attack on someone who never asked to be critiqued

While I generally agree with the sentiment that people should be left to live their lives in peace, in the Internet age the very act of posting to a public portfolio and soliciting business can reasonably be construed as an invitation to critique. He hung out a shingle, the public is entitled to comment on it. If this were a personal photo site for the use of his friends and family I'd say we should keep our comments to ourselves.

That being said, I believe critique should be gentle and constructive unless the person is doing real harm. I've not seen the web site, but I find it hard to believe that a photo portfolio could meet that standard.

EOS 5DS & EOS 5DS R Available to Preorder on Monday

kraats said:
As a landscape photographer I'd wait with preordering. I have a feeling this is no landscape camera. Lots of pixels does not make a camera a landscape camera. I'd wait for the reviews and comparisons to other camera's when it is released. I think Canon is walking the wrong path with this one. The three year gold canon 5dIII seems a better choice in clean images and better ISO performance

You start off sounding like you know what you are talking about, then veer off with "and better ISO performance", I was shooting night time landscapes last week, at 100iso. Over 95% of my shooting is 100iso.

Canon EF 16-35 f/4L IS Hitting Retailers

jeffa4444 said:
Well its 10 months since the Canon EF 16-35mm f4L IS has gone on sale and Canon must be selling plenty of them still because my back-ordered lens has gone back twice and Im still waiting for it. Similarly a friend is waiting for two zooms to be in stock with his dealer so Canon must either have manufacturing problems, poor stock control or great sales.

I've never heard of a lens "going back" after being ordered. Color me confused about this lens still being backordered. Every well known authorized dealer seems to show it being in stock.

Regardless, I'd cancel from whoever it was you ordered from and (assuming you are in the US) just put in an order at B&H or Adorama or even an ebay authorized dealer like PMI Digital (those guys are great, BTW).

Travel insurance - worth it for old camera?

toutou said:
Thanks for all your advice everyone!

I'm covered on the medical front with insurance for this trip. That's one of the first things I did and I would be crazy not to!! It's just that the insurance doesn't really cover gadgets. But I don't have a home content insurance. Medical insurance is covered automatically in Europe (but not for travels outside of course).

I haven't fully decided if I'll insure the camera, will look into it more this weekend. I guess I wouldn't insure it if went somewhere in Europe while actually, the risk of theft is probably about the same in touristy areas in Europe as it is in Ethiopia (theft isn't a big issue there apparently).

@Mt Spokane Photography - There is no malaria vaccine unfortunately. There's one for yellow fever, which is also transmitted by mosquitoes. But nothing is a 100%. I hope your sister is ok now. Must be incredibly frightening!

Correct - there is no malaria vaccine but there are pills which can help prevent it (though as you point out, not 100%).

Check carefully if you need to take your yellow fever vaccination card (our is yellow).

Firmware: Canon Rebel T5i Gets Update

Twisterfiddler said:
will Magic Lantern still work ? Do I need to uninstall ML , then install the Canon firmware update, then re-install ML, and will ML work with the new firmware , or should I better not update the Canon firmware and instead continue to use my T5i with the old firware and ML to be sure that ML still works ?
No one can guarantee that Magic Lantern will continue working with the new firmware. To find out, some brave should try to upgrade the camera firmware (without ML) and then test with ML.
