Skipping the 5D-s. What do you want in 5D4?

- A larger auto-focus area (see 7D Mark II).
- More information displayed in the viewfinder (see 7D Mark II).
- GPS. I would really like to have my travel pictures automatically geo-tagged without using some bulky add-on or remembering to use a GPS data collection application on my phone to eventually mash the data into my photos.
- Touchscreen, assuming it can be turned on and off at will. Being able to zoom in and out with a pinch and selecting focal points with a tap can be extremely convenient at times (see 70D).
- Dual memory cards without having one slot create limitations for the other like the 5D Mark III.
- Focal point exposure measurement options, not just in the center.
- Not as important, but Wi-Fi in conjunction with the Canon phone app can come in handy when you are trying to take group/family pictures that include yourself.

A test for Odin owners

Bervy said:
HI. I have a particular work flow that requires me to adjust the power output on my 600EX-RT while being remote from the camera. I use a Camranger to trigger the camera, then evaluate the exposure on my iPhone and adjust the flash output as needed.

I have been using PW FlexTT5s for this but have some issues with them.

I have tried a ST-E3-RT, but using such a trigger will not let me change my flash power at the flash. I want to be able to have the flash in Manual and adjust as needed without having to go back to the camera, and the ST-E3-RT seem to lock me out of my flash. I can change the FEC at the flash when I am in ETTL, but I really need manual control.

So, I am considering Odins. Can someone who owns Odins and canon flashes to a test for me?

While using the trigger, can you change the mode on the flash from ETTL to Manual and adjust the output?

Thanks.
You're not getting much response here. It might be a better question over at the FlashHavoc forums. Find an active Odin thread and latch onto that.

Canon EOS to Sony E (Full Frame) Smart Adapters. Master List and Impressions.

After much research, I bought the Commlite adapter, but other users' input regarding others would be appreciated.

-----------------
The current EF to FE adapter situation is very mirky. I would like an adapter with better AF speed than ones on the market right now, even Metabones III, now IV. Also, even the better-reviewed ones like Metabones and RJ adapters are supposed to not work well with third-party lenses especially Sigma, which is disappointing since the advent of Sigma ART 35 and upcoming ART 50mm lens. My research so far turned up the following.

The ones without AF are pretty cheap, but there are quite a few that preserve AF, IS. From researching these in an effort to find a reliable one, the user experience seems to be that AF is similarly slow via all of them, and each has different electronics/software leading to one working better with some lenses while another adapter may work better with other lenses (Canon or third party).

Metabones Mk III adapter seemed to be the most popular with most user reviews but also the most expensive at $400.
Metabones Mk III's AF speed is slow and typical:
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UTdyG3YLJA" rel="nofollow">www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UTdyG3YLJA</a>

*Edit*
It's since been updated with Metabones Mk IV, but disappointingly, according to Metabones, there has been no AF speed improvement from Mk III to IV, just bigger opening to accomidate tilt-shift lenses and anti-reflective coating inside:
<a href="http://www.metabones.com/products/details/MB-EF-E-BM4" rel="nofollow">www.metabones.com/products/details/MB-EF-E-BM4</a>

This Youtube video comparing Viltrox, Metabones IV, and Commlite also seems to indicate Commlite may work even better than Metabones IV:
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrrmPDEkuVI" rel="nofollow">www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrrmPDEkuVI</a>

Mk III did not work with all lenses, only Canon-branded lenses introduced in or after 2006 are officially supported. Autofocus may be disabled for older Canon lenses and most third-party lenses, including most Sigma, Tamron and Tokina lenses and all Contax N lenses. A lot of users are reporting internal reflections causing funny colors and CA at edges, and there is a DIY fix using adhesive-backed velour to cover up the adapter internals.

However, Metabones IV is reported to be too tight on lens side fit along with other issues. The video also shows why non-smart adapters like Vello can't be used:

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrJd2CmYNuM" rel="nofollow">www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrJd2CmYNuM</a>

My next choice would be RJ Electronics one which is cheaper with good user reviews available. Some claim it gives sharper results than Metabones III (how?) and works with older Canon lenses unlike Metabones. RJ admits it does not work well with Sigma lenses. I read one user who said that Canon 100L Macro did NOT AF when focus limiter was set to 0.3-0.5m (Macro range) but AF was fine at other settings.

<a href="http://www.rjcamera.com/ocart/index.php?route=product/product&amp;path=20_63&amp;product_id=81" rel="nofollow">www.rjcamera.com/ocart/index.php?route=product/product&amp;am...</a>

This Viltrox zinc-alloy one seems okay as well. I have a Viltrox Canon EF to M adapter which works OK though a bit loose on camera end. One can find a couple of user reviews on line, so at least you know it &quot;works.&quot;
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/VILTROX-EF-NEX-II-Cameras-Adapter/dp/B00MN7M4WA/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1424544685&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=viltrox+ef-nex+ii" rel="nofollow">www.amazon.com/VILTROX-EF-NEX-II-Cameras-Adapter/dp/B00MN...</a>

I found a video on Youtube that shows AF speed with Viltrox adapter:
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZXz2tD2vwA" rel="nofollow">www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZXz2tD2vwA</a>

<a href="http://www.ebay.com/...=item2a37fba755" rel="nofollow">www.ebay.com/...=item2a37fba755</a>

Fotodiox Pro adapter, at similar price to Commlite. The lens side is metal, but camera side seems plastic.
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Fotodiox-Pro-Mount-Auto-Adapter/dp/B00D9BKLX8/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1424544990&amp;sr=8-4&amp;keywords=EOS+E+adapter" rel="nofollow">www.amazon.com/Fotodiox-Pro-Mount-Auto-Adapter/dp/B00D9BK...</a>

AF speed seems similar to others.
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEwzoV4rdZU" rel="nofollow">www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEwzoV4rdZU</a>

TechArt version II adapter.

It's thought TechArt and RJ adapters may be from same oem, sharing the black finish on the camera side and also sharing the inability to recognize focus-limiter on Canon lenses. It's selling a little cheaper than RJ.

<a href="http://www.techart-logic.com/EOS-iNEX2.html" rel="nofollow">www.techart-logic.com/EOS-iNEX2.html</a>

Deo-Tech Falcon adapter
<a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1071789-REG/deo_tech_deocef2semk2_canon_ef_lens_to.html" rel="nofollow">www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1071789-REG/deo_tech_deoce...</a>

This one also looks to be the same adapter as RJ and TechArt
Upon further research, some users including Fred Miranda are reporting that RJ/TechArt/Deo-Tech adapters are softer with more CA in the edges compared to Metabones III.

Deo-Tech now makes Mk III, which now shows the label &quot;Tech-Art&quot;!
<a href="http://www.deo-tech.com/products/deo-tech-canon-eos-ef-sony-alpha-e-af-adapter-mark-3-falcon/" rel="nofollow">www.deo-tech.com/products/deo-tech-canon-eos-ef-sony-alph...</a>

*Edit*

Well, I ended up returning the Sony A7r but recently bought it again with the Zeiss FE55 f/1.8 lens. The adapter I did end up getting is the Commlite FE-NEX adapter. Based on reviews I read, none of the adapters, even the pricy Metabones, auto-focuses fast, so I bought one that is reported to have AF at least as good as others with least reports of issues.
This Youtube video comparing Viltrox, Metabones IV, and Commlite also seems to indicate Commlite works even better than Metabones IV:
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrrmPDEkuVI" rel="nofollow">www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrrmPDEkuVI</a>

Commlite FE-NEX adapter:
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Auto-Focus-Mount-Adapter-EF-NEX-Canon/dp/B00DW0EV2I" rel="nofollow">www.amazon.com/Auto-Focus-Mount-Adapter-EF-NEX-Canon/dp/B...</a>

Good news first. Its build quality is quite good with nice metal contact areas and sturdy-feeling switch and smooth mount/unmount. AF speed was surprisingly fast with Canon lenses I most likely would want speedy AF from, e.g. Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8 II, Canon 35L.

BTW, It's a joy to use the Canon T-SE 24mm II with its fabulous MF ring with this adapter and Sony's focus peaking. Fantastic!

Now bad news. Longer focal length lenses don't AF as well with lots of hunting issues. Canon 100L macro was especially slow with no useful AF to speak of. I expected better, but Canon 70-200 f/2.8 II did not AF well at all with the adapter setup. Pity that... To add to the insult, Canon 85L II would not even mount physically on the Commlite adapter. Something catches mechanically and the 85L cannot be screwed on all the way.

All in all, I got pretty much what I expected going in, with nice build quality for the low price I paid.

Magnifier MG-Eb/MG-Ef

Aside from the magnification, what's the difference between this and the Eyepiece Extender EP-EX15?

EP-EX15 0.7x magnification
MG-Eb/MG-Ef 1.2x magnification

Can I use both to get extension and less reduction than the extender alone? That would end up being about 0.84x magnification (0.7*1.2).

The magnifiers have two elements, so there must be some extension. It can't have no thickness. So would one of the magnifiers alone be a good alternative to the (reducing) EP-EX15 extender?

I'm looking for a way to not have to smash my nose into the back of the camera as much. (The Canon Angle Finder C is another option, but it's more cumbersome)

Patent: Optional Image Stabilization Unit

With Sony building far superior IS in body, you have to wonder where canon have been the last 3 years.
They are not going to make it are they in this race if they don't drop some of this outdated technology and start catching up.

Yep, Sony is king that's why . . .

Sony is no longer an electronics company

See remaining business #3. Doesn't even mention Nikon or DSLR, just iPhone sensors.

Wow, Sony is an epic fail... no wonder the fs7 isn't on Canon's radar.

Who shows up with a Sony + adaptor to sneak test a new Sigma prime???

I read your linked article, it notes that the images were originally taken at CP+ with a adapter on a Sony A7r but now updated to show a native Canon mount on a 6D. Its still a pre-production lens, but not a adapter.

The article is poorly written, so you might want to wade into it again.

"We were recently lucky enough to visit Sigma's factory in Aizu, Japan, where Sigma allowed us to shoot with a pre-production sample of the recently-announced 24mm F1.4 DG HSM Art lens. The wintry landscape of the Fukushima prefecture was a nice contrast to the CP+ convention center where we last gathered some samples with this lens, and our recent samples are more representative of lens performance on a native mount body (Canon 6D). Camera sales in Japan 2014

DSLR shares (Japan):
54,7% Canon (comming from 49,2%)
39,1% Nikon (comming from 42,5%)

Yeah!
All the "Canon is losing ground because of all the sensor flaws" saysers are so right.
Of course RoW sure looks totally different and there everything surely looks bad for Canon.

And before you argue with the gain at mirrorless, please share the total sales and turnover numbers because I'm sure that the DSLR market is still much bigger - even in Japan.

7D Classic Good Enough for Pros?

may be it is just me, but i do like forcing myself to use old gears to capture images since i believe that i can later move much faster with new high end gears if i am able to manage myself to deliver images with old gears without any problems

note: well, i did mess up my daughter birthday at one time during first year of photography, but i have not giving up using old gear to capture images...

below is an image captured in quite a low light condition with canon 30d and 430ex ii. it was my wife birthday... lol... yep, i got stared at when loading this set on my car :P

EOS Camera with MF Peaking??

mkabi said:
Which Canon camera do you have and did you install ML on it? Just want to know, out of curiosity.

I've got 60d & 6d, of course both running ML - if it wouldn't be for that, I'd gone Nikon.

mkabi said:
Do you know anything about ML on the 7D?

Works fine, installation takes 5 mins (I recently did it on a friend's 7d1) ... copy files on card, update fw with included .fir file, done: http://builds.magiclantern.fm/#/

mkabi said:
I can't seem to find anything on max. fps override + actual fps on the 7D, some say its still not available for the 7D (only on Tragic Lantern), but its checked off on the feature set.

Magic Lantern is very conservative as they know their undeserved reputation as a "hack", that's why they don't include any features that can be remotely "hackish", unstable or even dangerous. "TL" was a fork with another policy, and after a lot of discussion the ML devs decided to declare TL as unsupported. Unless you really need one of TL's features, I recommend against using it.

Tamron SP 15-30mm - The Digital Picture IQ charts up

TDP's reviews are among the best on the internet. They are the ones I look to first when I buy a lens. DP follows TDP.

Anyway, am looking forward to some direct comparisons to this and the 16-35L f/4 IS.
I certainly wasn't trying to imply that there is anything wrong with TDP. It's one of the best photo sites on the web and Brian and Sean are both great guys as well. I just wanted to acknowledge Dustin's different but also excellent work.

Review: Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II

Can someone ban Dustin from this site please?

I was doing so well telling myself I didn't absolutely need this lens until that excellent review :D

LOL. Just call me a troll and ignore me ;)
If it would be that simple :).

Thanks Dustin, my preorder has been set up few weeks ago, since in Poland it's almost impossible to get that lens from reputable store (I saw it at maybe two sellers at the moment, but waiting for one from my trusted one) right now.

It's crazy how this lens is selling, I'm putting my aviation set (7dmkII + Tc 1.4 + this lens) for this season. Can't wait to get my hands on.

Buy a FF camera now or wait?

It's probably the prices overseas that make the 5d2 expensive. Here's a beatup but working functional 5d2 for 900$, a total bargain

Ugh, seeing the US prices for used gear like this and new gear like the 6d is really depressing :-\

For some reason or another, over here there is a hefty premium on "quality" gear (probably because Germany like sturdy stuff) and Canon L lenses of ff cameras are sold for ridiculously high prices. On the other hand, you can get a pristine d800 for €1200 ... €400 less than a new 6d :-o
Canon is teh best. Thats why the 6D is more expensive than that horrible D800. ::) ::) ::) I've bought alot of gear used through craigslist and I've never lost money on a purchase. To see a 5D2 under 1K is unreal and soon they will all be under 1K.

Schneider 28mm Tilt Shift

don´t suck at Schneider-Kreuznach ;)
I love them - since their "super angulon XL 90mm"....

really? the Lloyd Chambers' review says that the performance of the new PC-ts 28mm disappoints???
(Ive no subscription)

i was said that the PC-TS50mm is not just that superb,
but the PC-TS90 macro is really an excellent lens.

I thought/was convinced that this lens(the NEW PC-TS28) will definitely outshine
the outstanding CANON TS-e24mmII....
but Im sorry that it is 28mm and not 24mm....
so I will stick with my "cheap" canon TSe24mmII :)

Hartblei has no wide angle lens!
---> you can´t compare a 40mm (hartblei, which has btw very bad test results!!)
with an 28mm?!

noisejammer said:
At that price, you'd be well advised to read Lloyd Chambers' review. He was singularly unimpressed. To quote him "By any metric this performance disappoints." Full disclosure - you will need a subscription. The review is in the DAP section.

If you're interested in alternative TS lenses, take a look at the Hartblei SuperRotator range. I have one of these and it's superb.

Why can't they put an iPhone panorama function in Live View

Because Nikon haven't done it yet. Once they do, wait 3 years and hey-presto Canon will have it too (or 6 years after Sony).

I must admit, I don't use a lot of the add-on bit's and pieces that are already in DSLRs (e.g. HDR), but the really useful things seem to get left out, which is why I 'have' to have ML installed.

If they won't even do auto ISO stuff right (well until somewhat recently and then only with some models), what is the chance of a really advanced feature like auto-panoramas?

BTW, I don't know what software Apple uses, but Canon doesn't even have a good photostitch outside the camera, how are they going to put an automatic one inside?
