What would be the time frame for the 5D Mark IV?

5D4 will be announced in AUG with it hitting the stores earliest OCT just like the 7D2 Aug and had too wait via push-backs or FCC delays till OCT
canon has started this annoying late/end summer announcements then release the cameras by october start/mid fall and nearly the beginning of winter its kinda bad but hopefully if its out by then and the fps are at least 8-10 can use it along with my 7d2 for high school football

Lens Choice for India Tiger Safari

aardvark said:
Thanks for all the advice..... I will take the 100- 400 rental I think.

...Don thanks for the advice, but my concern with the 500 (and more so a 600 prime) is that in India, that the wildlife (specifically tigers), when you get to see them would be too close.....

You should check out his work. Great Indian photographer with tons of amazing shots which generally include camera and lens data. Most of them are 400mm+

Advice on Canon PRIMES

martti said:
You find the bokeh of the 100mm L macro boring because the lens is too perfect. You do realize that you are a snob, don't you?

Ugh? Next to sounding rather insulting (or did you forget a smiley?), you're contradicting yourself in the next sentence. If I'd like perfect lenses with smooooooooooth bokeh, I might be a "snob" (whatever that is, exactly). But as it happens I like grunge, dirty, and natural - that's why a very even bokeh doesn't appeal to me.

Imaging Resource: Canon Q&A @ CP+ 2015

andrewflo said:
It's good to know they recognize this weakness. The 5DIII and pretty much any of their DSLRs' video look incredibly soft. Compared to the GH4 or a7s' 1080p it has a lot of room for improvement.

As a photo and video shooter, I'd really love 4K in the 5DIV, but if I had to choose between 4K + 1080p of the current video quality, or just 1080p of SHARP video quality, I'd easily go with the latter.

It's interesting that when the 5D3 was released, Canon and C.W. kept going on about how the 5D3 delivered perfectly crisp 1080P and that there was no softness at all. Yet internally, their engineers at least clearly knew the real deal.

It's also interesting that ML RAW gets nicely detailed 1080P out of the 5D3 HW and yet the Canon firmware delivers waxy, soft mush. So was it DIGIC? Marketing insisting they go for a consumer waxy look because that is what consumers supposedly want? Marketing insisting they give it a waxy look to protect 1DC and Cxx?

5D3 with ML gives some pretty nice 1080p if you can deal with RAW shooting, about the nicest direct 1080P from the DSLR. RAW does eat up space like made though. But it sure is nice to play with 10+ bit 4:4:4 files in post, a million times nicer than 4:2:0 8bit and get decent sharpness (also without much aliasing or moire still).

Cheating - feeling guilty...

mackguyver said:
I think street photography is one area where the mirrorless cameras seem much more practical. If I shot that kind of stuff, I'd be tempted as well :-[

Actually, I think mirrorless shines in two departments : Street photography and "I'm not sure I'll need my camera... oh, what the hell, I'll barely feel it in my backpack anyway" photography. :)

Interview With Head of EOS 5Ds & EOS 5Ds R Development

Re: Interview With Head of EOS 5Ds & EOS 5Ds R Development

rfdesigner said:
What I noticed is that he talked about Mega-pixies and image quality, and for him a key determinator for image quality was the processor.

I think he may be making a mistake there.. won't most 5Ds users be shooting RAW?

The only user I can think of who would choose in camera processing are wedding photogs.. maybe they will be most of the customers for this but I though this was a studio/landscape camera, both of those users would want a RAW image surely?

I think what he meant was more the effect of the processor on extracting the data from the sensor and the effect on noise , colour, speed, sharpness etc etc rather than the jpeg conversions. Agreed many shoot Raw and so do I , but also just because mostly the jpegs are so soft and unacceptable(6D) if the jpegs are good I can think of quite a few situations where it would be advantageous.

Have a look here at for jpeg quality straight from the camera(7d2). ( I believe sports are shot mostly on jpegs because of the sheer volume and deadlines) https://scottkelby.exposure.co/game-day-with-the-vols

I am going to shoot a test run of 50 packshots today to be loaded directly on the cloud, renamed etc and I am going to do it on jpeg. Eventually I will shoot 1000 packshots and I don't want to have to spend 1sec more than I have to, on PP.

What it looks like to me is that Canon has a certain standards of what their cameras and the image quality thereof should adhere to, regardless of what WE may think it should be...The interview was quite informative as to those reasons and thinking. Bottom line for me is that I am extremely happy with my Canon stuff and the reliability thereof, including image quality, lens quality and sheer breath and depth of lenses and other acessories for every application. They must be doing something right in my book....I cant wait for the nifty fifty!

Light modifiers for speedlights

Light modifiers for speedlights? Obsessive by nature, I've probably tried almost all of them.

My most used modifiers for 600 EX-RT speedlights are:

1. The ceiling.
2. The wall.
3. Jo Demb Diffuser Pro http://www.dembflashproducts.com/products/flash-diffuser/
4. Gary Fong Light Sphere http://www.garyfongestore.com/featured-products/lightsphere-collapsible-speed-mount.html
5. Stofen Omni-Bounce http://www.dembflashproducts.com/products/flash-diffuser/

I also use a pair of Godox Witstro AD360 hotshoe mountable flashes. OMG these are useful. They'll take the Joe Demb Diffuser Pro diffusers when required.
http://www.godox.com/EN/Products_Camera_Flash_Witstro_AD180&AD360_Powerfou&Portable_Flash.html

They are a little like Godzilla in appearance and performance. I like to bounce off ceilings and walls when I can for a natural light look. You can bounce these confidently in large halls and auditoriums. More often the Witstos are on lightstands with any number of inexpensive modifiers:

Other jobs that need more formal, powerful or technical lighting lighting are lit with Einsteins, either bounced or run through umbrellas, beauty dishes or more often PCB's excellent 86 inch PLM modifiers.

Eeeehhm....I admit that I do want this camera, but that "commercial" DID NOT convince me.

It was super cheese, but I don't think it was aimed at photographers... it was aimed at people with too much money who *wish* they were photographers. Specifically, wishing they were photographers photographing models.

"Give us your money, and you TOO can photography hot models in luxurious settings for billboard campaigns!"

I don't think it was even aimed at 35 wannabes. It was aimed a lay people who might buy a Canon because of its name.

Told me nothing believable. Lots of claims but no substance.

Coincidence or?? MP/SEC

Olliecanon said:
This is a ridiculous thought..

Canon 5DS / 5DSR - 50.6mp - max 5/sec burst = 253mp per sec
Canon 1DX - 18.1mp - max 14/sec burst = 253mp per sec

Two highest - when summed - figures from the Canon line-up in terms of image size.

As they use different processors is there another limiting factor? or is this just stupid?

My vote is stupid, but I wanted to share it nonetheless.

North American Customers--Availability?

Mt Spokane Photography said:
The big retailers get them in stock and sell out promptly. B&H had them in stock just a couple of days ago. Since you are paying full price, go to a local dealer and ask them to order in one for you. Canon seems to support local dealers by shipping small orders right away, at least, that has always worked for me. I've had my local dealer get hard to find items in 2 days.

We don't have drive-in movies or local dealers anymore. :-\

Canon 5D mk2 Firmware

rhysb123 said:
Hi,

Thanks all.

Mt Spokane - I think you have the nail on the head... I'm not having any problems which is why I've not bothered before. Perhaps I'll leave it as it is!

Can anything go 'wrong' if I decide to update?

Rhys

Yes. Firmware updates occasionally fail and brick a camera, much as they do a computer. The risk is low, but since its a older camera, getting a failed upgrade fixed might cost proportionately too much. I would not want to risk a $250 failure unless I was getting something in return that I needed.

Decline in DSLR sales explained

All the camera makers should make smartphones. ;D

The video presents a very good argument for consumers not to buy anything but a smartphone.

If you want something more then get a fixed lens compact with a large sensor & WiFi/NFC.

Need flexibility get a MILC.

Need better AF for moving subjects then get a DSLR.

Need pixels and money's no object then go medium format.
