More details given. For instance: "This can be combined with Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB) to capture two, three, five or seven-shot sequences at different exposures".

Edit: I believe that we were expecting just 3...

Also:

"JPEG images are captured at the selected crop setting while RAW files are captured full-frame with the crop shown in DPP, allowing for fine adjustment afterwards".

Maybe the reason for max 5fps.

Ah, I see now. Nice to have it confirmed.

Although it would have been nice to give the user the choice to capture fully-cropped RAW at a smaller filesize TBH.

400 DO II continues to test out as superb

Karl XII said:
Hi Karl XII,

can you share some pics with us?

I am about to order this lens , but I still have doubts. The contrast of version one was not that great

Thanks in advance

Ben

Hello!
Here are two photos with the 400mm DO II.
They are cropped some, and i´ve added some contrast and sharpness.

Hi,

thanks very much for the photos.
In the mean time, I have ordered the Ef 400 do II.
It is a bit of a gamble overhere in Australia as nobody can give an exact price, they all mumble "around 8500 AUS$"
ETA is unknown as well, hope that I do not have to wait too long.

Thanks,
Ben

Affected with GAS, Gear Acquisition Syndrome

Lurker said:
I need help! Spring is in the air and I am coming down with GAS, I am spending to much time looking at lens reviews....how can I rid myself of this affliction?..?

Depending on were you are in life:
1) Get a Significant Other
2) Get engaged
3) Get married
4) Have kid(s)
5) Buy a house (or a bigger one with a bigger yard)
6) Buy a new car
7) Send a kid to college
8) Have a kid get married
9) See a financial adviser about retirement planning

All have been shown to work well as vaccinations against GAS. They work by removing the basic resources needed for GAS to get started. The effects of some last longer than others, and some require boosters every few years.

Adding to the list:
10) Get an expensive divorce
11) Get unemployed
12) Get an illness that lasts

All of those will take care of the problem. After a few years you will start to contemplate the possible nutritional value in your neckstrap and the lens caps...

I just want a stills camera.

CanonFanBoy said:
5. The post had to do with whether or not a stills camera allowed to evolve on it's own, without having to cram so much more technology into the small case, might evolve more quickly and be a better camera in the long run. It is a question, not a manifesto.

I imagine that the development teams are divided into photography and videography groups. Would putting twice as many people into photography software improve photography? Maaaaybe, but more likely they'd just finish the work package sooner.

If there are video-specific hardware compromises made, such as an strong low pass filter (mentioned above), then it's possible a stills-only camera would be a little better than a hybrid. I suspect those situations are rare, and that no, photography wouldn't evolve significantly faster if it weren't for video.

AvTvM said:
A camera without unnecessary holes in its shell for mic, speakers, video-only connectors would be better and cheaper to weatherseal. Those holes are additional video-induced compromises and weaknesses compared to what a pure stills machine would be.

Kind of picking a nit, there. Neither a rather insignificant body weakness nor the cost of a gasket have any impact on still photography performance, any more than the presence of a mirror box impacts video performance. If they created light leaks, that would be another story entirely.

Playing with kenko extension tubes

Re: I've used them on a 500mm lens.

Freddie said:
We get birds at our back deck feeders which are about 10 feet from the doorway. I have used a full stack of Kenko tubes (68mm) to get the 500mm f/4 to focus that close and it works well. Most times though, the 100-400 II works better as I can handhold it more easily to keep up with the birds. Attached is a photograph using the 500mm f/4 on the new 7D MK II and extension tubes. ISO 500, 1/1000 @ f/5.6, +1 EV.

Wow, splendid shot!

Canon Patent for EF-EF-M Adapter with Improved Auto-Focus Speed

http://www.canonwatch.com/canon-patent-for-ef-ef-m-adapter-with-improved-auto-focus-speed/

"Egami (translated) spotted what could be Canon’s best move to push their mirrorless cameras. A new EF-EF-M adapter that should deliver better AF speed when using EF and EF-S lenses. While the AF performance of Canon’s new EOS M3 is excellent with the native EF-M lenses, AF performance is limited when using EF lenses via the currently available adapter. If Canon puts such an adapter on the market it would a huge selling point for the EOS M3. Access to Canon’s extended lens lune-up, and same AF performance as with native lenses!"

Good news for all M3 interested photographers....

Canon 600mm mk2. Hard to "refocus" on different distances. Help/advice needed.

I use the 500II on a 5D3 and can't remember having said issues.

I did however create a quite extensive article about the 5D3 AF system that also covers the topic of how to change focus distances quickly while using super telephoto lenses.

You can find the article here: http://www.focrates.com/articles/configuring_your_5d_mark_3_af_for_fast_action/configuring_your_5d_mark_3_af_for_fast_action.html

Greetings!

60d does not power up

I have trield 2 charged batteries that worked in another camera. I removed the memory card.
I am baffled...anyone know abouut this?

Susan

Hi Susan. I'll take a stab at this because I had a similar problem once with my T5i. I removed my battery grip and inserted a charged battery into the camera. The camera would not power up. Turns out there is a limit switch (very tiny) that gets depressed when the battery door is closed. I hadn't reinstalled the battery door after removing the grip so the camera thought the battery door was open and would not power up. There's a similar switch on the card door too. It could be that one of those two switches has failed, or one of those doors is not closed. If both doors are in place, then one of the switches may have failed and the camera needs a repair. OR, the little tab on the battery door that depresses the limit switch has broken off. In that case you can stuff a tiny piece of paper into the hole to depress the switch and use the camera. You could order a new door in the mean time.

45mm vs. 90mm tilt-shift

I concur, of the two strive for the 90mm, particularly as you're shooting FF. I have the 90mm which I predominantly use for products...it's amazingly sharp. Yet for pictures? Wouldn't you miss AF? I've utilized mine on a couple of representation shoots yet about dependably get my most ideal chances with the 70-200 f/2.8isII. I simply keep the 90mm for 100% static subjects.

Practical use of the ef 50mm 1.2L

i've observed that focus shift is a thing with this lens, but it's not a big enough deal to really worry about. in my informal tests, when shooting a meter away, focus appears to shift away from the camera by about 3-4mm at most, which is usually not enough to put the subject out of focus.

on the other hand, with the dof being as shallow as it is, setting the AFMA is very important. mine needed an adjustment of -10, which made a difference of a few cm shooting 3m away, which is enough to cause trouble when shooting wide open. simple enough to do though. i bought focal to double check my manual settings and it's results were very close.

i really enjoy this lens a lot. being able to obliterate ugly backgrounds really makes the subject pop. i even enjoy it stopped down, which isn't what it's really meant for, but the colour rendition is good, and while it's not the sharpest, it's not as soft as people say either.

Review - Canon 85mm f/1.8

I know I can easily remove it during post-processing, but I don't wanna see it on the camera screen.

Um, on newer digic5 and later camera bodies there is the in-camera CA correction to take care of this, isn't it?

On Page 150 of the 5D3 manual it says:
If you play back a RAW image shot with the chromatic aberration corrected, the image will be displayed on the camera without the chromatic aberration correction applied.

Commentary: Engineer/Management Interviews Tell me Nothing

Hi PropeNonComposMentis.
I'd guess a good many of us got the analogy, I did, but have little or no idea of the answer to the question or the science behind it.
Sorry, no thousand yard stare, a brief quizzical look, then on to the next post! ;D

Cheers, Graham.

Wonderful--in the vein of Mad Magazine's famous line "All the news that fits, we print" the Canon interview was a perfect example. Thanks for real answers.

Seriously--no one has written a word I've seen on light loss associated with the R " moire unfilter". With wide angle lenses, I'd guess any extra optical layers would increase vignetting, and maybe a little light loss would up noise. Any comments?

Also, what's the overall quantum efficiency of this sensor--that is how much of the light is actually converted to e-h pairs? i.e. how big are the cracks in the sidewalk compared to the paving stones? With smaller pixels, maybe the efficiency suffers more than proportionally.
Hi ultrasound, I assume you are not the Transformer Decepticon that goes by many names in the original animated series ;)
Its rather sad around here. :o If you make mention of Actual Real Life Science, or Reality in general, it would seem that everyone looses interest. ::)
I can only imagine people sitting at their screens, deadpan expression, 1000yard stare, like some scene from Dr Who where the Bad Guy hijacks everyone's brains via the Net'....

"cracks in the sidewalk " Obviously still way too technical.
I dont dare use the full 'proper' term, in case someone has a stroke.

Good luck dude. Party on... :)

Patent: Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS & Others

Re: Patent: Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS & Others

keithcooper said:
Sorry, I wasn't quite clear, its a 'new' technology, as in the way that DO is a 'new' feature to include in your optical designs. This one seems to involve resin layers (??)
You are right, this has nothing to do with DO, in fact the blog even writes about the drawback of DO and specifically mentions Nikon's recently released 300 PF. The key claim of this patent seems to be lenses with prescribed distribution of diffractive index over the radius, made from special resins.

The blog also mentions that instead of going the Zeiss Otus / Sigma Art route, Canon may elect to stick with conventional design for fast 50mm lens, with performance improvements coming from this technology.
keithcooper said:
Having lenses that vary in refractive index in different places is not new, you are looking through them to read this...
And even Canon seems to have patented aspects of this technology over three years ago ...

A7S + Voigtlander Nokton 35mm 1.2 field test by Daniel Cook

Being owner of Canon 1DX and Sony a7s + Sony a7r I found review below interesting for me , maybe it would be interesting for others

http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/a7s-voigtlander-nokton-35mm-1-2-field-test-by-daniel-cook
"The legendary high-ISO handling of the A7S is just amazing, whilst I use my Canon 5D Mark III for professional work if I need to shoot in low-light the A7S will do a much better job."

so, where is the Canon 35 1.4 II??

StudentOfLight said:
The combined LCA and LOCA (exacerbated by field curvature) on the 35L can be at least 13micrometers towards the outer third of the image which equates to about 3x the pixel pitch of the 50.6MP bodies.

Interesting calculation - we'll see with real life samples of a 5ds and a 35L, if anyone dares to combine them. We might see a 50/1.8 though just for kicks :->

Regarding correction in post processing... (from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromatic_aberration )

Do note that I didn't say that CA is a good thing(tm), but imho it can be worked around (not: removed or the detail recovered) that I doubt Canon will update a lens for this reason alone. We probably differ in our belief how important a good lineup of L lenses is for Canon and how much they're willing to invest for this, my argument is the lack of a 35L2 vs. the updated 24L2 all those years.
