Hybrid CMOS AF III?

I'm curious and cautiously hopeful.

Me too. Works pretty good on T4i. Haven't spent enough time with the SL1 to see if Hybrid CMOS II is much of an improvement.

I have. At least with an STM lens (USM is still iffy), there is improvement, and live view mode is actually usable now, but it can still lag - so don't count on it to shoot moving targets.

1D Mark IV focus button locks exposure

NorbR said:
I checked with mine: I get the same behaviour, but only when AF is set to One Shot. When focus is locked, exposure is locked as well.
But when I switch to Servo (which I'd think you'd have when shooting moving objects), there's no exposure lock.

My C.Fn IV-1 is set to 2. Check your C.Fn IV-2 as well, that switches the functions of the AF and AE buttons on the back (although I imagine you would notice if your AF button did not AF anymore ...)
Thanks for the suggestions. I am shooting on AI Servo (continuous). I still haven't got it to work, but I will keep at it. In the meantime I just have to remember to release the focus button every now and then.

External battery for DR-E6?

Not sure how I can be more clear, (not a writer). I would like to use the DR-E6 plugged into an exterior battery such as the Anker 2nd Gen Astro Pro2 20000mAh (12V) or preferably a smaller sized external battery such as the Anker Astro E7 25600mAh (5V). I am trying to do this without paying $200 to add a $3 DC-DC in line converter. So again my question is does anyone know of an external battery that can be plugged in the DR-E6 without the in-line converter?

thanks, jeff

Err 80 - Should I Worry?

gbchriste said:
I was shooting a portrait session a couple of days ago with the MIII and 70-200 2.8L II when all of a sudden I locked up with Err 80 on the top LCD.

Yes, you should worry because this is (amongst others) the "dead shutter" error code.

Problem is that until you can reproduce it reliably, Canon won't service it. If you've got warranty you can either try to burn in until it's broken, or have a backup camera body ready and wait until it dies on its own. It *could* be temporary because of cold or dirt on the shutter, but shutters simply can fail at any time, no matter how many actuations.

Metz Mecablitz 64 AF-1 Flash Review by Dustin Abbott

DominoDude said:
I'm not surprised that you liked it. I would certainly own at least one if I could.
The little fill has been around for quite a long time in the Metz world, and I don't know if there are any other that have something similar.

I don't know if it is patented or not, but it is a great feature. I don't use flashes mounted on the camera very much, but these do a remarkable job with the main unit bounced and the smaller head providing fill.

Ordnance Survey Photographic Competition

Out of interest, for anyone who has taken photographs in the UK, a new photographic competition has been announced by the Ordnance Survey, called the "National Map Cover Competition".

It is what it says - a competition to find the next set of photographs to use on the covers of the Ordnance Survey map ranges, which means they need at least 300, taken from every region in the UK.

Details are here: https://os.uk/photofit/

Let us know if you win...

Canon 7D/Sigma 10-20mm or Canon 6D/16-35mm f4 ?

Thank you all for your answers. I reall think I will stay at APS-C for the moment, as I don't need high ISO or very big prints. I ordered some 120cmx80cm prints. If they are OK, I'm more than happy with my 7D and the Sigma combo for landscape.

I might add another body, so I don't have to switch lenses. Or a big telephoto lens. We will see.

Thank you all for the information
cheers

Yongnuo bringing out RT trigger for 580 EX and other legacy flashes!

My biggest issue with YN is consistency.

To upgrade the transmitter for the 600RT system you can use 64bit bit OS. To upgrade the 600RT knock offs you need to use a 32bit OS.

Great, don't have any of those laying around anymore! Now I need to install a virtual machine to upgrade $360 worth of flashes that work via radio but won't fire via the hotshoe or PC socket...

70-200 4.0 IS Best of Non-2.8 Bunch?

Personally, I believe the 70-200 F4 IS is the sharpest lens I own ... second 100-400 V2, although my 100-400 v.1 is very sharp also, especially when not pushed out at 400. Not to mean it isn't sharp at 400, it is very sharp, but it starts to show the range at 400 -- minimally.

I'd be hard pressed to say the 70-200 f4 is REALLY REALLY sharper compared to the 100-400 V.2 -- and under certain situations would be difficult to choose between them as long as choice was at comparable lengths ... 200m - 4000m, the V.2 wins it hands down :D ;D

Having said that, I'd say the sharpest shots in my catalog are 70-200 f4 shots -- but the applications differ, so very difficult to say. Depending on the range, you can't go wrong with either one.

I've never shot with the Sigma, but it would have to really kick butt to stay with the 100-400 v.2 ... no doubt.

EOS-M1 Japanese Version?

I have a japanese m and a official uk m. it's just a different range of menu languages, importantly for you, both have english.

It would need to be a very good price to tempt me: the m1 is also on sale at argos, brand new with uk warranty, kit 18-55 and 90ex speedlite, uk manual etc for £199.99.

A very good price considering the reputation of the vendor and the back up of a uk warranty.

This can't be correct but Amazon shows a availability of June for both models. I personally would not buy from the seller but you might want to check this out. It's too big of a purchase to take a risk like that IMHO. I"ll wait for Prime to make the offering.

Be careful. Prime does not mean much anymore, it may be graymarket and the seller may not accept returns.

Anyone can sell using Amazon Prime, I do. I just send inventory to various Amazon Warehouses and it sells like hotcakes.

Thanks for heads up MSP! Assume you're on the list to get one or two of these?

very interesting indeed
I have the trioplan 100mm 2.8 and orestor 135mm 2.8, both with chipd adapters for canon, and bothe produce a very unique bokeh wide open. Not too bad at closing down either.

Aside of looks, and integrated interface for other cameras, hopefully they will keep the number of blades.
Now about the price....

I'm hoping for "affordable" as the price! :D

probably around 600-700 Euros, looking at the other available lenses
The 85 ...is almost tempting, but that bokeh looks very similar to the helios 44
At that price range, there are better choices IMO
Will keep an eye on their website for sure

New Rebel & EF 11-24 f/4L USM Coming Shortly

Re: New Rebel & EF 11-24 f/4L USM Coming Shortly

I agree. My gear has paid for itself 10, neh, 20 times over. I am able to make more profit each year as my need for overhead goes down as I accrue lenses and other peripherals.

I will say, I have diversified to do more for sure; moving into commercial, corporate, weddings ect.. to make those dollars.

Without being too conservative (even though I *am* a Canon user :-)): there's always the possibility to beautify or "improve" something to the worse side :-o
LOL. This is a great quote...

Originates from my experience doing post-processing. At some point, you should simply stop adding something or tweaking around. Chances are you'll screw up with too many locals and it will look awkward to people that didn't go to the whole process, but see the image for the first time. Concerning this, I'm a believer in KISS :-)
