Traveling to the UK/Ireland

I can't see how anyone could suggest a possible selection of gear to someone they don't know. But if the question is about "what would you take with you" I personally would never ever leave the house without my 70-300 L. So my minimum gear would be 24-105 L and 70-300 L (70-200 or 100-400 etc.), sometimes even only 70-300 L + 40 STM. And I really don't get why people seem to believe that a modest tele range like 70-300 is only good for nature. As I am addicted to urban details like clocks (www.clockspots.com) or typography (www.typokunst.de) I regularly walk across cities with either a 4/500L or even a 4/600L! + 70-300 + 24-105 + TS-E 17 (selection may vary). I have one advice though: Always have every thing close to your body. I am using the Lowe Pro technical harness for that. It also allows me to have the weight of the big white tele lens on my waist, not on my shoulder or neck when not in use. Ten years ago I wouldn't have thought to be able to use a 4/600 LII as a "walkaround" lens, but now I know that it is perfectly possible (for me). But then, I am quite tall and heavy myself. My wife for instance would be dragged down by the mere weight. And of course my suggestion for the OP is not to take along a 600 mm. But it really depends on what you want to shoot!

I tend never to take my big lens (500 f/4L II) into cities. They just attract too much attention. I shot a big composite of the Houses of Parliament, and half my time was spent dealing with tourists (but it's too big and heavy that I would worry about anyone running off with it :) ). How do you find that aspect?

Gura Gear Acquires Tamrac Brands & Assets

GMCPhotographics said:
it makes one wonder if Tamrac were really that big? We sort of assume it was based on it's distribution and web site layout. But it's quite possible that it was quite a small outfit all along. In a simular way, Gura gear may not be all that big either. But is possibly a lot more cash rich due to it's better margins, lower overheads and wiser equity investment. I guess the proof is in the pudding, and another indicator that the market only really sustains the top of the pile gear (ie Apple, Canon etc).

Tamrac was pretty big like Calumet Photo was pretty big -- they were everywhere. Tamrac products were in every Best Buy I ever walked into. I'm guessing they are like a Tiffen or Domke sort of well-known name with a jillion products with lots of lots of inventory. I'm also guessing that's probably what killed them. Brick and mortar is dying for electronics / music / etc., so what's bad for Best Buy is doubly bad for third parties like Tamrac that need a store front to succeed.

GuraGear, in contrast, is a 21st century (almost Kickstarter-y) business that shuns a large footprint in brick and mortar establishments and is living and/or dying online. Their success is based on the innovation of their products and the quality of their designs. Further, they overcome 'it is the right size for me?' problems a la shoe ordering with Zappos -- lots of pictures and videos and reviews. Right now they are on a roll, earning followers and building their reputation.

I paid a lot money for my GG bag, but they back it up with great service. They found out that my bag was part of a batch that lacked certain stitching in the laptop compartment and replaced mine very efficiently without fuss.

I tried it at the store...fell in love.

I imagine it's a lot cheaper than marriage, divorce, children or criminal defense attorneys. :P

I just broached the subject of the camera with my girlfriend. She gave me a look like I might not have to worry about marriage after all... :'(

I must always remember: "It's easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission." :P
get the camera... look for a new girlfriend

Nah, she is a keeper. Brought it home and she just rolled her eyes. Told me to "have fun," laughed and went about doing her own things.

She's pretty understanding of my cameras and motorcycle obsessions.

So, you ready for 300, 400, 200-400 and/or 600mm ;)

Oh I'm definitely ready! My bank account, on the other hand, is not. :( All those sound wonderful though!

What are those funny 1 series looking bodies at the world cup where instead of regular black prism hump on top, the front part is like shiny white/yellow, almost like some sort of mini-flash integrated into the hump? (Or more likely some guy, for some reason, just using reflective, bright tape on the front of each of the humps on his two bodies ;D BUT why would someone do that, normally they try to take out bright, not add bright and reflective, if anything, so might it actually be some new body??? I wouldn't have thought a 7D2 in a full on 1 series integrated grip body though, one of the pair of guys who were using the pair of weird shiny hump 1 series was also shooting something small that looked like a 7D, maybe the new one is 1DX2 or 2D with integrated mini flash in hump? OR, most likely just some guys taping their names in shiny fluorescent yellow tape on the top ;D, just couldn't get a clear look from the video feeds).
Have screencaps but don't think it's worth bothering to upload and post.

That's tape ;) I figured for hire/ID related purposes, maybe?... but YES! There are photographers with non-gripped bodies with larger viewfinders and markings where the 5D3's 'Mark III' badge resides - and I do recall struggling to see a mode dial. These were being shot by people also wielding 1Dx looking bodies - would Sports Pros shoot something as slow as the 5D3? These bodies were equipped with much shorter lenses...

Yeah I kinda figured tape, but it seemed to be unusually reflective, almost flashy fluorescent, most photogs don't use that sort of tape for marking, but I guess these ones did hah.

More EOS 7D Replacement Buzz Going Around [CR2]

More likely is they want people to buy into their more expensive FF cameras rather than keep using their abandonware cameras.

Respectfully disagree:

1) The 7D2 will cost more than the 6D. That's a near certainty given how feature-laden the 7D2 will be and how precipitously the 6D price is dropping. Crop and FF will therefore have some overlap in pricing.

2) Some people desperately need the 1.6x reach a crop brings. It obviates the need to buy epic superteles for $10k+. You get 90% as good IQ for half the cost and half the weight -- that single value proposition says that crop won't be abandonware for a very long time.

EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 : possible issue?

Update: I went to a camera shop today with the lens and was able to test it on a 650D. No issue whatsoever. The lens focused fast and perfectly. No 'overshooting' or 'hunting' issue, even though it was pretty dark inside the shop. Nothing wrong with the lens :)

So I believe it must indeed have been a set up (or other) issue with the initial camera body.

thx everyone.

Thinking of replacing a couple of lenses

But, you might also want to wait until Photokina this fall to see if Canon announces an mkii of the aging 35L. If so, prices of the original will drop and you may be able to get an f/1.4 lens for not that much more money

Experiences with recent Canon premium/L lens upgrade tell us that it's more likely the new version will be much more expensive to cover upcoming high-mp sensors while the to-be-obsoleted version stays roughly at the same price.

The old version might even rise in price because a lot of people realize the above and demand rises quicker than supply from people "upgrading"... this was the 24-70mk1 vs mk2 effect. Lesson: Don't wait for lens upgrades to snatch the old version at a budget price, this only works for camera bodies and flashes.

35L vs 35/2 IS

Yes, I've heard about that. Not that I normally would stop it down but it is still annoying.

I've just read the TDP review and one thing that has never crossed my mind before is the minimum focus distance and magnification. By using my 25mm extension tube I could literally use it as a 1:1 macro. Not as flexible as a real macro of course but still very interesting and unexpected indeed...

Canon FD 500mm f/4.5 L drop-in filter

Hi guys!
I have a question for those who know about FD lenses. I've been trying to find a ND filter for my alod Canon FD 500mm f/4.5 L. This lens has a compartment for filters, but is not the gelatin kind but glass made. It has a 48mm diameter and it can be screwed in and out of the tray.
I have attached pictures so you can understand better.
My question is: could I buy a normal 48mm ND filter to use with this lens instead of buying the holder again? Has been really hard to find the original parts and I've had lucky with polarizers only.

Hope someone can help me.
Many thanks!

Looking to replace my 5D Mark II with either the 6D or 70D. Please Help!

Moviemaykr said:
Someone mentioned that if I go with the 70D that my L series lenses might not be a good choice with that camera. Does the 24-105mm 4.0 and the 70-200mm 2.8 not work well with the 70D? I also have a Canon 50 mm AF 2.5 macro lens I could use as well.

That was me. One of the criteria you added as an advantage of the 70D was its video AF. That particular feature will be a real let down if you stick with your L lenses (or any non STM lens):

rs said:
As good as the 70D's video AF is, using it with anything but an STM lens will leave you selecting manual focus every time - USM lenses have AF which is far too fast for smooth focus, and the end result is choppy AF which not only looks bad, but gets loud as it stops/starts all the time:

http://petapixel.com/2013/08/26/video-comparing-canons-usm-and-stm-lenses-using-the-70ds-dual-pixel-af/

Plus of course the angle of view will change with the crop, so your primes and zooms will all frame very differently. In other words, if you swap out your 5D mk II for a 70D, you'll also need to swap all your nice L lenses for cheaper, slower STM lenses to utilise it to its full potential.

Get a 6D, and you'll not lose out on any cutting edge features (or framing) you're paying for by sticking with your current lenses.

For stills and for manual focus video, the L lenses and the 70D are great. Just don't expect video AF to be anything you'd use in reality with USM lenses.
