Joe's Tuscan Adventure

It's a brilliant camera, although light was often an issue. We had incredibly harsh light on our visit to Sienna which ruined a fair few pictures.

I usually shoot in RAW so PP is much easier.

Picked the 100d up quite cheap in September and I love it, small and light, with the 50mm it's almost pocket size. Looking at the new pancake too to make it even more portable. Trying to get in the habit of manual focusing at the moment, and getting on quite well. Composition isn't too much of an issue anymore, I've found with the nifty fifty I have to use my feet more, and step closer or further away from my subject which gives me some good ideas.

We have a weekend in London, and yes the camera is staying at home! No camera stores either!

Lens Kit Set : One (EF-S18-135) or Two (EF-S18-55mm & EF-S 55-250mm)

StarsShooter said:
So the dilemma : I'm torn between the 18-135 set or the 18-55 & 55-250 set...
I'm a total newb in DSLRs, and I was just wondering which set should I be getting???

In order to save precious storage, let me recycle this thread with a similar, but different, question.
PREAMBLE
Two days ago I sold my venerable 5D classic, bought (used) four years ago.
Just before selling (for obsolescence, possible future lack of spare parts etc.), I realized that I took 10,000 pictures in 2011-2012 and just 5,000 in 2013-2014.
I couldn't believe it: truth is that when my EOS M arrived, I started to take it with me more often than the 5D. What a lazy pervert have I become!
Now I can't decide whether to replace my 5Dc with a 6D (high IQ, slow performance in terms of AF points and FPS) or with a 70D (worse IQ, better performance). They weight more or less the same.
My real target would be a 6D Mark II, which I expect to be more or less a full frame version of the 70D... so a third option could be to skip both the 70D and the 6D, and wait for the 6D2.
Fourth option: sell the M stuff and buy a 70D and a 6D. In this case my wife could kill me, you all know how women are. ;D And you guys don't want me to stop participating to this excellent forum, do you?

So, let's go back to the topic.
MY QUESTION:
If I realize I can't wait => give in to consumerism => and buy a 70D,
considering that I already own an EF-S 55-250 IS STM,
would it make sense to buy an EF-S 18-135 STM, or a cheaper and lighter EF-S 18-55 STM would be enough or better, coupled with the 55-250?
I don't see myself using my 17-40 F/4 or my 24-105 F/4 IS on a crop body.
[A corollary could be: if I prove to be such a lazy amateur photographer, maybe I can survive with just an APS-C body (I'm not so sure, though): this event could significantly change my future purchase plans (or roadmap, as they say)].

EOS M3 - Will it be Available Outside of Japan?

What's to prevent us from ordering from Canon-Europe or Amazon-UK or Amazon-Fr and having it shipped here????

Nothing but increased taxes/shipping????

??? ???

Why not book a flight to some exiting city in Europe and buy the camera in a shop ;-)

Paying full price for something that would retail cheaper if it was sold in the US and have no warranty?
In other words, paying more than retail for a gray market product!

RØDE SmartLav+ Lavalier Microphone Review by Dustin Abbott

Hi, everyone. As many of you know, I do video reviews on YouTube as part of my review process. I needed a decent lavalier mic solution for getting audio. I settled on the RØDE SmartLav+. Here's a review along with a breif video review to show its effectiveness in the field.

Full text review: http://bit.ly/1Du4QtF

Have any of you used the SmartLav+ (not to be confused with the previous SmarLav that didn't have as good of sound quality)? What are your thoughts?

Comparison hybrid AF T6i x Rebel SL1

Seems to be as good as duel pixel tech on 70D.

T6s can perform AF servo in live view. Don't think the 70D can.
Yes. T6s can do continuous shooting in Live view as well. Not sure which one is superior at this point of time (duel pixel vs hybrid). Duel pixel tech suppose to replace hybrid system. But Canon is still pursuing both of them.

A New Nifty Fifty Coming [CR1]

What about two 50's? Like Nikon did. They replaced both their 1.8 and 1.4 with two really great lenses and introduced them at the same time.

I wish that were the case but I'm expecting just a 50 stm and probably 1.8. In which case I'll just use my 40 and my 50 2.5 macro.

But it sure seems at least on this forum that there's great appetite for a 1.4 in the manner of the 35is.

Canon EOS 5DS & EOS 5DS R Press Release

But could they honestly release a camera with 2007 video, 5fps max (when Nikon gets to 7fps in crop), 2007 level low ISO DR (which is so far 2 parts WORSE than the 5D3 and one part equal) and simply double the MP count and that is all she has to offer?

I mean really then, compared to the 5D3 it would offer: worse for SNR, worse for fps, worse for video, the same for DR and the only thing better is a doubled MP count??

Of course they could, and for those that are what Canon believe are the target market none of your bullet points are worth a damn.

If I wanted 50MP files for the product and studio work I do then it would suit me fine, fps, video, and low iso DR are irrelevant as they are all plenty good enough already. If I was a pro landscaper printing big then again the specs are fine, I'd just use my normal techniques and have much bigger files. If I wanted a 'crop mode' I'd get a 7D MkII as it would do the entire job much better anyway. If I wanted video then I'd probably not be using my studio camera for it anyway............

of course

It could $6000, 1fps, 36MP, 6 stops DR and SNR worse than the 20D and you'd say the same.

If it does what it supposed to do, rather than what you expect it to do, then yes.

Look these new cameras, the 5DS and 5DS R, are not 5D MkIII replacements, they are nothing to do with the 5D MkIII and 5D MkIV either, they are different tools that are more finely tuned for different users. They are not intended to be the best general purpose camera ever made, which I firmly believe at this point the 5D MkIII is, they are refinements of that Canon 5D marque to widen their appeal to a very nuanced clientele.

I think the unfortunate thing about the route Canon has taken is we will get no end of utter garbage about how this 5D can't do what that 5D can with no regard for the fact that that isn't what it is designed to do or sold as doing.

The 5D MkIV will be the 5D MkIII replacement, it will need 'better' everything than the 5D MkIII. The 5DS and 5DS R are 1DS MkIII replacements for the kinds of people that used to drop $7,000 on a 135 format camera. For those people a pair of 5DS/5DS R's make a lot of sense, they already get 'better' everything (that is important to them) even with the seemingly modest improvements talked about.

There will never be a camera that has the best of everything in it, there can't be. We now have a split 5D line as we used to have a split 1 series line. People never bitched about why the 1D couldn't do what the 1DS could or visa versa, get used to the new family and the split feature set.

Agreed...
The world is a strange place indeed, things can be crystal clear for some and totally lost on others. Canon have stepped out of the normal and the same people that have been asking for it now can't understand it! The new ADDITIONS to the 5 D family are a stroke of genius IMHO, medium format quality (maybe) in a compact body compatible with all your current 5D accessories etc... . I will echo what many have already said the 5D Mk3 is probably the most complete camera on the market period so why would / should Canon change what is so good. YES people it is not a Mark 3 replacement so stop expecting it to be, save your slagging for August. I'm convinced most of the negative comments on here are from trolling Nikon users anyway. Anyway back to the genius of Canon, remember when Apple brought out the iPad and it was marketed as a new class of device? Of course there were tablets out at the time but Apple were convinced this would better what was already available and be even more accessible. Well would I ever be able to afford a medium format camera? Probably not, but a 5Ds.... and....I can still utilise my investment in lenses, L bracket, power adaptor etc! Well hell yes I will take two. The only downside is file size, but consider this the ratio of storage versus cost is constantly falling so standard hard drives sizes will continue to increase and all will balance itself out once again. Keep moving Canon I love it! Real pioneers don't look at other brands and play on their terms they create their own rules and standards even if the average joe fails to grasp it.

the "new" medium format?

I think you can have as many pixels as you want on a FF sensor, and that number would still not make any MF shooter consider it as a threat.
MF, to me, is about light gathering ability and tonality. When I look at shots taken with any serious MF camera I'm always floored by the smoothness and how clean the images look. That's a quality not related to the quantity of pixels.

Canon EOS 5Ds & EOS 5Ds R Image & Video Samples

Re: Canon EOS 5Ds & EOS 5Ds R Image & Video Samples

Stu_bert said:
I appreciate they've not made a massive leap like Sony did, but if they have improved the sensor quality by matching the DR of the current 5D III then if the same tech was used on the lower-res 5D III would it not increase the DR of that sensor? Not massive jump agreed.

The comparisons with a MF sensor from an outcome perspective are fair, especially as Canon are marketing it as a competitor. But for most people it is quality at a price point. And a $3.6K vs $8.6K excluding lens is surely like comparing the Audi to a Porsche? If money is no object, a Pentax is better. But then so is a Phase One.

Ultimately Canon did their research and produced the best possible with their resources. None of us know why the off-chip ADC is still there, nor the 180nm or 500nm process.

In reflection, what were the chances that Canon were going to produce a step-change in the 5Ds having just launched the 7D II?

I would be surprised if a A7r II has a step-change increase in DR over the A7r. If it matches it, given the higher resolution, will people be disappointed?

I'm looking at the A7rII as a possible replacement for my Nikon, to use as a smaller back up camera. As long as it has at least as much DR as the present A7R has I will pull the trigger on it.

I think that Canon are making a rod for their own back by promoting it as competing with medium format. It isn't all about resolution.

24.2 MP Sensor on Rebel - Sony Senor in Canon?

K said:
Nikon buys them. Nikon puts it in their entry level DSLR. Their cameras are profitable.

Maybe you missed today's news

http://nikonrumors.com/2015/02/07/nikon-had-another-bad-financial-quarter.aspx/

As said elsewhere, Nikon has a different crop factor, albeit the 1.5 crop sensor could be used in a 1.6 crop camera with pixel loss around the edge. Canon has the scale of "sensor requiring" business behind it to be able to afford R&D on its sensor business, where as Nikon is a small brand of Mitsubishi thus will be competing for R&D from the parent against much more diverse range of markets, notably cars, aircraft, space, banking etc... Canon's key competitor will be Sony, just as Apple competes with Samsung... I note that Apple has done just about everything to rid the iphone of Samsung sourced parts, go figure.

Help with upgrade from T3i?

My point was, there are ways of speaking to folk, I guess I was looking for a reason to make allowances.

The bar conversation test is always good. Ask yourself, 'if this person was sitting next to me in a bar, would I speak to them that way?'

I'm from Glasgow, where sh1t like the way you speak to people really wouldn't fly. We're pretty friendly, we're (Christian sectarianism and the issue of independence from england asides) easy going and tolerant, if somebody wasn't quite keeping up with the conversation we'd either be polite and include them, or make a wee joke to bring them up to speed.

We wouldn't get all arcey about it, because, there are ways of speaking to folk, and there are ways of getting a punch in the face. And in a glasgow bar, no matter your station in life, cheeky folk aren't above a punch in the face.

So maybe apply the bar room test to your next posting, avoid a rammy or a barney, eh Pal?*

*If ever in a glasgow pub and you've inadvertently strayed ontp religion, football or the referendum, and somebody calls you 'Pal', they aren't really your Pal. Take it as a 10s warning. Brace or run. Pal.

If you could rebuy your gear would you change anything

If I were to rebuy everything today I'd probably end up with the same kit. I have a good balance between price, IQ and size / weight. It took about 4 years to reach that point though and several bodies and lenses had to be bought and sold along the way but I think I finally nailed it.

The only lens I would maybe change is the old Sigma 50 1.4 to the Canon version for more accurate AF performance but I can make do for now.

I'm glad I went with Canon from day one. I initially wanted a Nikon D90 based on specs vs the T2i but it was out of my price range. Now that I know better I'm not bothered by Nikon specs as I know how to get what I want, even from my EOS M.

Have you negotiated your own "street price?"

drmikeinpdx said:
I love the "street price" listed on Canon Price Watch. But what if the lens you want is not included in the street price program? Is it worth trying to negotiate a better deal with B&H or Adorama? If you have done this, what worked for you? Did you contact them by email or phone? Did you offer a lower price first or ask for their best "street price?"

I've heard from a number of people that dealers will negotiate on expensive gear. There is not a huge markup percentage, but on a $12K lens, there is room to drop the price.

Right now, you might do better to purchase from Canada, you still get a US warranty, and the USD versus the CAD gives you a sizable discount.

For example: A 200-400mmL

CPW Street Price - $10,750
Canada Price in US Dollars - $12,979 CAD = $US 10,374. And, you can likely negotiate that price down.

Monopod - advice what to purchase

niels123 said:
I am considering to get a monopod for a bit more support when shooting portraits with my new manual focus Zeiss 135 /f2. Especially after holding it for longer and using a Zacuto loupe and liveview I am suffering from lactic acid building up in my muscles :P The lens is relatively heavy and at a long distance from my eye since I have the Zacuto loup between my eyes and the camera.

I am considering to get a Gitzo monopod (carbon I think), but I also need a (ball) head. What would you choose and what is good enough (but not overkill) for this? Thoughts and ideas appreciated ;D

Thanx,
Niels

As noted above, Gitzo is top of the line for monopods, but not for heads. RRS has a great head for Monopods. I went for a less expensive Reged carbon monopod, its barely 5 ft, but with Manfrotto 234 head, kirk clamp, and camera, it sits more than high enough for me (I'm 6' 2"). I actually measured the distance to my eye, and calculated the total height before deciding that a 5 ft monopod would work.

I would not recommend a ball head for a monopod, since you just turn the entire monopod to pan. You just need the tilt feature. This eliminates a camera flipping over when you loosen the head clamp. You can use a ball head to flip from landscape to portrait, but it gets unbalanced when you do that.

Focus peaking via usb on windows pc?

niels123 said:
Kuuvik Capture seems to allow you to project focus peaking on (remote usb) live view with a Canon dslr. It is only available for Mac OS X. I have tried to use it in VirtualBox, but I cannot get my camera recognized by the Mac OS X (also Canon Utilities don't 'see' my camera there). In windows, everything works fine.

Since google didn't get me any further, I am asking here: who knows of a piece of software that runs under windows and allows you to use focus peaking on the computer screen with the camera connected via usb?

Perhaps I do not understand the question??

What's the point of using focus peaking when focusing via a tethered computer. Just put the cursor over the item that needs to have sharp focus, and use live focus. Focus will be near perfect, and you can magnify to 5X to double check.

I'd just use the Canon software, in fact, that's what I do.

The benefit of focus peaking comes with viewing a small image in a viewfinder or rear lcd where you can't easily see the fine details.

As to finding software that works with your Mac, you may need to upgrade to a newer OS, since a lot of software has stopped supporting previous operating systems.

Seem to me specialist camera as can be read in the description - and it is not a secret 8)

I'm sure Canon doesn't exactly *prevent* anybody from buying it though :-) ... but: they're unusually verbose about the 5ds' position, after all they could have added a mantra like "and everybody else loving crisp and sharp images" or some other marketing yadayadayada.

That's because afaik Nikon positions their 36mp d800 line as a good as a general camera; Canon not doing so with their 5ds might indicate that they'll also jump to 30mp+ with their 5d4? After all, they're missing something in between now.
Maybe they will jump to 30mp+ on the 5d4 because they may go to 24mp on the 6dmkII. Something to hope for.

New 50mm & 70-300mm Coming Soon? [CR2]

Re: New 50mm & 70-300mm Coming Soon? [CR2]

I can't see Canon launching a new 50mm f/1.4 with another double-Gauss design. I feel sure they want to take a slice of the Sigma's and Zeiss's high performance market segment with a similarly complex retrofocus design and an L designation. Needless to say, such a lens would bear no comparison with the current Canon 50mm f/1.4 in size, weight, complexity or cost.

I should think Canon could produce an f/1.2 lens with a retrofocus design like the Sigma and Zeiss but can you imagine how big and costly such a lens would be? My prediction is that Canon's replacement for the 50mm f/1.2L will be a 50mm f/1.4L with a retrofocus design and probably no IS, priced comfortably in excess of the current f/1.2L

For the new non-L, my guess is an IS lens with similar performance, build and optical design to the 35mm f/2 IS, with either an f/1.8 or f/2 aperture. Since this would obviously be priced much higher than the current 50mm f.1.8, perhaps Canon might continue producing the current nifty fifty to cater for smaller budgets.
