6D Mark II speculation...

What we do likely know is it will have a sensor based on current Canon tech rather than a new breed of sensor if the camera comes in 2015 as the 5DS & 5DS R are not coming out until late May in Europe & June in the US.

Is it even realistic to think that the 6d might come out in 2015? When looking at the interval between the 7d and 7d ii, it's pretty "shocking" how long it can take the slow moving giant to bring out it's next child. Somehow I cannot believe that the 6d ii will show up in 2015.

5ds R - late may 2015
5d IV - Q4 2015
6D II - Q1-Q2 2016

Future Canon DSLR Strategy for More Focused Products?

I'd be very surprised to see the 1 Series get a split any time soon, at least before a 1DX Mark II comes out.

The 1D is currently split into X and C lines. It will be interesting to see if there will be a 1D C Mark II or not. Presently, there is probably more need to update the 1D C compared to the 1D X. For example, improved slow mo, add video functions such as peaking. As well 1D C Mk II could include Canon's video PDAF.

Agreed. I made that disclaimer in one of the other threads but failed to add it here. It's a good point. That said, I think the Cinema line is considered by Canon to be a different enough animal than photography that it probably doesn't fall within the same market/product segmentation discussion.

With the recent price drops on both the 1DX and 1DC, they're probably both getting a refresh. Will be interesting to see what comes...

I'll keep repeating my prediction. 1DC and 1DX go away. Replaced by 1DX2. The 1DC is literally nothing more than a 1DX with a 4k firmware and Codec added in. Same sensor. Same body. Same CPUs, same FPS, same AF points, same EXACT camera. In 2015 it makes no sense whatsoever anymore. The original 1DX came out before 4k was "thing" and Canon reacted by taking that camera and adding the 4k codec and a hefty premium.

Think of it this way.

Is the 1DC going to get revamped with a new DPAF sensor? YES

Is the 1DX going to get revamped with a new DPAF sensor? YES

Short of Canon employing a totally NEW sensor in a new 4k DSLR built exclusively for video (like the a7s) these two cameras will become one.

We should have 2, 4k Canon DSLRs by year end. a 5D4 with mid-upper twenties MP and a 1DX2 with lo-mid twenties (I'd LOVE a 6D style 20.2MP sensor with DPAF added or a 5D3 22MP sensor with DPAF added), a whole new kick-as$ 101 point AF dual cross whatever etc...

If a new 1DC2 comes out and costs $12000 again ($4k above a separate 1DC2), Canon can put a gun in their mouth and pull the trigger on that one. If they come out with a single 1DXC or 1DX2 at $7-8K being the best action cam and has superb 4k.... They will sell a lot.

Can the 11-24 replace the 17 mm T/S as far as......

Mackguyver,

Thank you very much for the examples. This was exactly what I had in my mind.
As far as the tilt function is concerned... well.... I dont remember taking one picture successfully so far where there was a great DOF at f3.5. Just don't know how to do it! :'(

Anyway, I will likely get one for this kind of situations even though I use my 16-35 much less then the 24-70 ! So difficult to compose a landscape in this UWA

Thanks everybody

Canon HQ

Hi kphoto.
Yes Canon make some terrific lenses, I'm not sure about mounting them on eye glass frames, I think it would require a more substantial mount, and may quickly be responsible for neck ache unless the pancake prime lenses are your prescription! ;D

Cheers, Graham.
Ps Sorry couldn't help myself! :-[

POLL: Will Canon shut down the xxd line in favor of premium Rebels?

jdramirez said:
I would think that is what the 7d line would be for.

I don't think it will merge. The Specs are impressive for a rebel but rebel's cramp my hand after shooting awhile. A 50D never hurt my hand with its bigger frame.
7D2 is a big price jump from a rebel and only for a bigger grip? I don't see it.

Just when I talked myself out of buying an x100s...

I got the camera yesterday and I am really enjoying it. Definitely a totally different shooting experience than with my 5d3. I'm actually pleasantly suprised with the autofocus speed/acuracy. I think I had very low expectations and perhaps that's why I'm so happy with it. I've read (and found to be true) that the best way to use the camera is to put it in manual focus mode and use the AEL/AFL button on the back to activate autofocus. Then you can tweak it with manual if you want (and it's pretty fun using the focus peaking and digital split image tools). It definitely is not as fast as my 5d3 with my 70-200 on it, but it's faster than my 85mm 1.2 for sure (which obviously isn't saying much). It's also pretty great how much you can customize this thing.

More Images of the Canon EOS 5DS R

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

They have pretty well thought-out ergonomics and their consistency allows us to migrate between bodies with little effort.

Any radical change would likely be a step, fall or plummet backwards. Why do change things for the sake of a gimmick unless there was some huge gain to be had?
If it ain't broke, don't fix it was probably Microsofts philosphy and it allowed Apple to flourish. Now Apple have the same problem with it's user interface. It's hard to improve it without a radical change whereas Android probably has alot more scope to change gradually.
This is evolution I suppose. The dinosaurs were pretty happy they way things were at some point but the small furry animals adapted and modified to the changing world.
Usually we don't spot extinction coming until it's too late.
Software is not a camera. I'd hate if my camera layout moved as much as software does.

The Dawn of a New Digital Resolution

rs, please see answers inline in blue.

rs said:
No. The largest possible square supported by the 43.27mm image circle common across the EF lens system is just under 30.6mm x 30.6mm. Anything bigger than that would result in corner shading.

The goal is not to get a perfect square output, but to get the maximum the image circle can produce. It's better to crop corner shading in post, than to crop a large fraction of the image circle with every shot.

  • Some EF lenses have a rectangular baffle, such as the 70-200, optimised for a 3:2 image format. This would allow for a theoretical maximum 24x24mm square sensor
Remove the baffle and stop producing lenses with such baffles. Do they serve any specific purpose which can't be accomplished with other features?

  • Many lenses have petal shaped hoods, optimised for a 3:2 image format. This again means a 24x24mm sensor Replace the hood. Plastic is cheap.
  • If using the DSLR format, the 44mm flange distance would be pushed over the limit to allow for a 36mm image height mirror - This was addressed in a previous post: this large sensor would either require a major redesign of the mirror assembly, or would need to wait for maturity of mirrorless.

The New Rebels Will be Called the 760D and 750D

Wow, the Canon 6D is looking like quite the dog spec wise these days. :)

Well, that's not hard to do - the 6d essentially is a good sensor in a "as cheap as they can get away with" body plus wifi/gps gimmicks.

AF 19-point cross-type. Center F2.8 corresponding dual cross
7560-pixel RGB-IR photometry sensor. 63 zone TTL metering
The shutter speed is 30 seconds -1/4000 seconds (Synchro 1/200 sec)
Continuous shooting 5 frames / sec.

I think the 70d has a problem... are they going to do a 80d or dump the xxd line?

A problem with 5D mark III firmware 1.3.3

Hello,

I've noticed the following problem after update to latest firmware 1.3.3:

Lens is Zeiss ZE APO Sonnar 135mm f/2.0

In live view Av mode, aperture set to f/2.0, camera changes aperture (closes it by itself) when lighting conditions changed. Displayed value stays on f/2.0, but looking into lens you can see that aperture closes down. It happens dеspate exposure simulation is enabled or disabled.

In movie live view mode camera behaves as normal.

I would like to ask if anyone else has the same problem?

Expect what with 5DS R

I currently use a 1Ds3 and will be buying the 5DS R for my studio floral stuff and some
landscape, and...am a avid PS CC user.

When I open an image on my monitor, am I going to notice a difference in overall IQ with
this new body or is that image merely going to be larger in size?

PS, when might I be able to download a manual before the purchase?

ST E3 RT/300EX RT working with Sony A7

I was very dissapointed that I could not use my st-e3 With my Mamiya RZ67 pro II, as I hoped to be using my Canon lights With that camera. I found a workaround, thus having to shoot in manual by using inexpensive PW X Plus. The additional bonus for me by using PW triggers was that by buying a small chip for my Sekonic meter, I could now lightmeter my lights in my studio without having to use my prescious film :) I have not tried any of the Youngno Products, but I am seriously considering buying a couple of Youngno 600ex rts to compliment my canon flashes, as I have seen several reviews that states that it is unproblematic to use these together.

What about the 6D mkii? Is the 12mp A7S sensor a possibility?

articulating display & fullframe DSLR? Why not?

Good24 said:
6D...
So, it should not have DPAF. Not be geared to video (altho it can have video function). It should not have an articulating or touch screen -- too gimicky for the xD line of cameras; save that for the Rebels and XXD line.

Hi there,... I wouldn't "downgrade" an articulating display so much to call it a "gimmick". It's a real helper in many sitations. It saves a lot of time and makes you much more efficient, without getting down & dirty for example. And it's better than a WiFi-smartphone-connection as a remote display because it's faster, much quicker and more responsive... and of course an already integrated tilt-able display is a lot more comfortable to use than a remote one.

edit: the only thing I'd call "gimmicky" is a touchscreen i.m.o. so on that one I agree with you.

I really like the new Nikon D750 and the fact that it's a modern fullframe DSLR with a tiltable display. I believe many people appreciate that someone listened to them and made it possible without pricing it too high.

The reason why I'm not switching over to Nikon or someone else is not because I'm a so-called "die-hard" Canon faboy or so... I just have too many Canon lenses and of course I have faith in Canon that they'll strike back some day.

I will wait for the 6D Mark II to see what type of AF it has. I'd like the 19-point, all cross type, that the 7D has. Agree that it's unrealistic and not necessary to have the full 61-pt. system of the 5D3.

We'll see what's in store for us. I'm okay with everything on the AF-side, as long as the 6D mark II features at least one -3EV high sensitivity AF cross-type one (or even better).

And the price should be about the same as the Nikon D750.
