photo test of canon 85mm f1.2

You are testing a Canon lens on a Sony camera? Canon RAW is CR while DSC is something out of a Sony.
Unfortunately, the quality of your pictures does not allow for making any kinds of guesses as to the optical performance of the lens in your setup. Your pictures have over-and underexposure in addition to which they are most of the time out of focus because of the lense's shallow depth of field.
Most probably the problem is somewhere in the vicinity of the lens but not necessarile inside of it.

Sony closing down?

Sony did annouce it was closing its PC unit but it also annouced preliminary 2014 results which show revenues increasing and EBITDA improving. It showcased a lot of new products at CES and the sensor business is a shining star they hold around 60% of the global market. The CMOS market is growing fastest in things like Auto, Surveillance & Industrial whilst Photography is falling. Sony cameras are used in the Iphone 6 as well as many other cellular phones but its not these areas that have badly affected Sony.
TVs, Cellular, the delay in the PS4 launch & many of Sony "traditional products" that have matured and are commodities are made cheaper by other companies in Korea & China. Sony needs value added products like the PS4
because Japan is a high cost country even with there automation.

Interestingly Sony have a 20% stake in Olympus after Olympus accounting fiasco they mainly did this because of Olympus strong presence in medical equipment not photography.

7D Mii - Custom Settings Bug

KurtB said:
After making the change and saving it, if you power off the camera instead of just letting it go to "sleep", does the problem still happen? I am just looking for a simple work around. I am just starting to get the C1-C3 set up the way I want them, so I will be making quite a few changes to the settings as I try different things. It only takes a couple seconds to power cycle the camera after making the change, and if that prevents the issue, that is what I will be doing.

Unfortunately powering down the camera does not cancel the problem. In fact that is a much easier process than waiting for the sleep cycle to cause it to happen.

One solution I am going to start using is, if I want to change the user def picture style or custom white balance is to:
make the change
clear the custom mode for one of the other Cx modes
Register my settings for that Cx mode
Use that Cx mode

Kind if defeats the purpose of have 3 Custom Modes, but it will let me keep my sports settings separate from my everyday settings.

Image Stabilizer on 70-200 2.8 for Basketball

Interested in your observations.
Personally I have turned off the IS on my 4 IS lenses (24-105, 70-200 F2.8, 300 F2.8 and 800 F5.6) and am preferring the results. I am getting quicker AF acquisition and improved tracking - especially on the 300 F2.8 and 800mm. This has resulted in a slightly higher keeper rate, not much but worth it IMO and you always have IS in reserve - just in case!

Autofocus that works with video in an upcoming Canon DSLR

Mark said:
I use the 7D for shooting video quite a bit. For me, the one most important feature that would justify buying the next camera Canon puts out is for the video to autofocus like a regular camcorder or the Sony mirrorless cameras. I have all Canon lenses but have even considered buying a Sony just for the video autofocus capability.

Have you heard anything about video autofocus in an upcoming Canon DSLR?
I second this notion. Focusing is extremely difficult; especially when shooting at f/1.4 - f/2.8

Thoughts on 70-200 f/4 vs 70-300 vs 100-400?

tomscott said:
...

Summary

1- 70-300mm L
2 - 70-300mm DO
3 - 70-200mm F2.8 + 2x
4 - 70-200mm F4
5 - 100-400mm

Hey TomScott,
Not sure if you are already on your 6 month trip or not, but I thought to suggest you the Canon 200mm f2.8L II. It won't zoom like the 70-...'s but it's small, lighter and pretty good.

For traveling you DON'T NEED TO cover every millimeter IMHO.

Cheers

Canon EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM Lens Review

hoodlum said:
SLRGear used the same bodies for the 300mm and 400mm prime tests. ePhotozine used the 5Dii with the 300mm f2.8 ii and then used the 5Diii with the 400mm f4 DO ii. The SLRGear tests would be more reliable for comparing.

I am not sure that using different cameras is the cause. At f/5.6, according to ePhotozine, both the 400 DO and the 300/2.8 are close to identical and the centres knocking the top of the chart, but the 300 is distinctly lower at f/2.8 than the DO at f/4.

http://www.ephotozine.com/article/canon-ef-400mm-f-4-do-is-ii-usm-lens-review-26785

Seeing how they test, it looks like SLRgear should be the most reliable.

SIGMA f1.4 85mm: Some experiences

1.4 85mm is a lens format I love since years. In my analog times I had the Zeiss Planar 1.4 85mm (I think I bought it somewhere in 1985 or 86. I adapted it until I got my 1.4 85mm Sigma lens. And the Sigma is a great performer.

I first published some shots in my blog and updated the blog entry recently

http://bit.ly/1zMZp8Y

What is missing are shots with the 7D MkII... Which is going to come

How is your experience with this lens...

35 years of Canon 35mm

In 1976 I got the AE-1 with the FD 50mm f/1.8 and pretty soon afterwards I got the FD 35mm f/2.0 SSC.
Ever since, I had the 35mm on a Nikon FE3, on an Olympus OM-2n and now, finally on the EOS 5D III.
Of course, I had to get the 35 mm f 1.4 L.
Everybody knows that it is an old construction, that there is an IS version f/2.0 out and the Sigma ART lense is just so much better in all respects. Only that it is not a Canon L

I got mine finally one year ago and have not been using it much because the EF 24-70mm f/2.8 is so handy and it is always in the bag etc. And then I went shooting with it. It is one hell of a lense to fool around with in a crowd. It is fast, it is discreet, it opens up to 1.4 and the quality at 2.0 is, like, excellent. Bref, I love it.

I am just so much at home with this anachronic lense. Probably, I will get the new version of the 24-70 mm zoom but now, having shot with the 35mm f/1.4 I am in no hurry. In my bag, I have the 100mm F/2.0 for portraits and it is just about 'good enough'. If I need Magic I take the 85mm F/1.2 L.
It feels so good being able to open up and getting the focus on the spot. F the color balance, people are so incompetent when they select the light sources for a ballroom that I have to set the WB here and there and there again in Lightroom.

Yeah, me reviewing the Canon FE 35mm f/1.4 L sounds like 'yess'.
With an L on it. I cannot be objective ( haha, get it, a pun!) about it. It is my lense. My three lense set is this, the dust pump and the 100mm f/2.0. Arigatoo, Canon-San.

Review of the Zeiss Makro-Planar T* 2/50 ZE

WOW - I have to say it Dustin, you really disappointed me with this review.

Do you realize the that the throw from infinity to 1 foot is just a smidge over 3/4inches?
Aren't you aware that a common trait, welcomed and desired in macro lenses (even half size as this one) in indeed the heavier focus dampening and long throw below 1 foot range, as precision focusing really matters?
Also, it's very common to see the a very narrow DOF in macro lenses, as it's common to have an above average sharpness.
Further more, almost no macro shooting occurs with a lens wide open- nor even if doing photo stacking.

I am surprised and shocked after reading other reviews from you, seeing you bluntly fail and commit such amateur, uninformed mistakes thru your comments.

Can't compare this lens to a canon 1.8 nor even the Otus 55 - It's a whole different league, and built for a special purpose...but can be used everyday.

You are certainly entitled to be disappointed with my review (BTW, Zeiss certainly isn't: https://www.facebook.com/carlzeisslenses/posts/937419462934961; https://twitter.com/CarlZeissLenses/status/557213223095894016), but I'm not sure where some of your points of view are coming from.

If you have used the lens, then you should recognize that the focus throw is very long. As I point out, that's great for accuracy, not so great for speed.

The reason for the heavier damping that I give is directly from the president of Zeiss of the Americas. I don't personally like the weight compared to all other Zeiss lenses I have used.

Of course the DOF is very narrow at macro distances...that's the whole reason I supply that information. "That aperture advantage over the typical f/2.8 of most macro lenses is great for use in a variety of applications, but macro is really not one of them. DOF is only .08″/1.98mm at minimum focus distance and maximum aperture. That is TINY! Even at f/5.6 the DOF is only slightly over half a centimeter at the minimum focus distance." - The point here is that you AREN'T going to be using the lens at f/2 for macro purposes.

I don't think your particular criticisms here are valid.

I own and use the lens quite often - one of my favorites, and I don't like the 50mm focal range, but this lens it's the only 50mm (not 55) I like to use.

With that said, check again the throw from 1 foot to infinity or even from a more usefull 3 feet. And then compared it what other 50mm with AF are doing, as how much turn they need to accomplish the same.

The dampening on that initial focal range is not bad IMO - indeed becomes a chore after that.
No, I won't use f/2 for macro, but portraits or details at a bit over 5 feet will work very well - in the macro environment, the f/2 allows you to start with a brigher viewfinder view - a bigger difference comparing to the ef 180mm macro from canon, but not so much with the usual 2.8 aperture from other dedicated lenses

In all, looking at a halfsize macro from a point of view used to judge a generic walk-around lens it's faulty to say the least

My criticism applies to your generic review pointers on a non-generic purpose lens - I can see you coming around this "street" calling a canon EF 500mm as not great for walking around town and shoot candids

Canon 7Dii vs Samsung NX-1 Epic Shootout

Lee Jay said:
These 70ish% numbers of in-focus shots for someone running slowly toward the camera just don't seem right to me. I tend to get high 90s for that on my decade old 20D and 5D even shooting at f/2.8 and even zooming while shooting. I'm planning to buy a 7D Mark II to improve on this, not degrade it. For example, these were all shot on the 5D and 70-200/2.8 at f/2.8, I was zooming while she was running, and they are all in focus.
f2.8%20FF%20AF.jpg

Cute kid you got Lee Jay

I'm pretty convinced the 7Dii is falling a little short of the performance as indicated in Canon's promotional material.

A friend is getting his replacement 7Dii tomorrow. His 50D was killing the 7Dii for sharp images and keeper rate

Revisiting the EOS-1D C For Your 4K Video Needs

Hey I like EOSHD!

Andrew had an opinion on the 1Dc 2 years ago, now he's expanding and looking into the strength points and finds it better than he though it was.

What's wrong with that? why is a slight change of opinion about cameras seem like a legal misconduct on the internet? I even heard people calling him with severe bipolar disorder because he changed his mind slightly on a camera. Lovely.

Come on people. Read the reviews on EOSHD and take the pros and cons he presents, and don't read if you don't want to.

Before I tried the a7s I kept going on how the colour science looks terrible, but when I used it for a while I changed my mind. What's wrong with that?

It's a camera. A cool gadget. A tool. Not a religion conversion.

I guess if these strong opinions and wars forums ended and everyone relaxed. these boards wouldn't be as entertaining as they are. So go on :D
