Zoom lens for Indoor Sports?

There’s a Tamron 35-150/2-2.8 for Sony and Nikon mirrorless. There’s also an older Tamron 35-150/2.8-4 in EF mount, but that may not be fast enough for you.

If you have time to process RAW images, DxO PL can gain you a stop more of usable ISO.
That's an interesting lens! Too bad I can't seem to be able to learn how to handle Nikon bodies. Sony for me is disqualified for life for way too sneaky business practices, like shopping malware on music CDs as a copy protection measure.

Meike launches the AF 85mm f/1.4 autofocus lens for the RF mount

That's a really weird on-the-record response from a company. I read their response as "We're 99% sure Canon will find out we've illegally copied their IP."
More likely: "The legal fees for fighting the case make it financially not worthwhile even if we win".

The Mirrorless Data is Clear: Canon is #1

Maybe the mirrorless data aren't so clear after all.
Anyways, the whole thing is pointless chest-thumping. There are two leading brands with Nikon a solid third. Choice is good.
Sony is claiming #1 in full-frame mirrorless.
Pretty poor reporting on behalf of Petapixel but that is what they do.

Canon has registered a new ILC camera with regulators

Wasn't it supposed to be R5M2 now?

Although that being said in reality usually the flagship is first and then the lower models. Because there always exist a slight chance of cannibalizing some of the sales of the Big Brother.

Still kind of feel cheated because I've always believed that now in February the Japanese guys will come out with R5m2.
If true, this rumor will make you happy ;).

Nikon Z6 III specifications

How would you describe the difference between the R5 and the R3 EVF?
I didn't have enough time to thoroughly check for differences, in fact, I didn't notice any. Maybe by testing under absolutely identical conditions one could perceive some slight advantages for the R3 ???
TDP seems to have noticed an improvement when reviewing the R3.
But both (R5 and R3) are noticably better, meaning really good, than the R6 II's EVF.
Viewfinder quality (and bigger size!) are for me of utter importance, much more than MP count, fps, video features etc...
Maybe because I got spoiled by the 5 D III & IV, Leica's R6, Nikon's F2 and disappointed by the EOS R's EVF.

CIPA 2023: The bleeding as stopped

Relative to what? The first year CIPA broke out mirrorless was 2012, and that year there were just under 4 million units shipped. Shipments dropped to ~3 million per year, then rose to 4.2-4.3 million in 2017-2018 before falling again. It took until last year to top that 2018 peak.

Overall, MILC market share has been improving for several years. But MILC unit sales have been essentially flat (on average) since CIPA started tracking them, while DSLR sales plummeted. Note that while unit sales for MILCs has been flat, unit value has been steadily increasing.

It’s too soon to say if the jump to nearly 5 million units in 2023 is an outlier.

I think a lot of that depends on China for ILC's overall it's the only region with > 20% growth, looking solely at mirrorless, it had almost 40% growth compared to the Americas with 20%. Asia overall contributed the most with 2.44m in shipments, versus 1.92m the year prior.

Canon’s 2023 Financials

Don McCullin - yeah, I guess most war photographers are traumatized after a while. Doing landscape is a good remedy. I don't know when he went digital, but e.g. Canon's original 5D was a very attractive offer in the small field of FF digital cameras back then.
I believe he started using the 5Diii, so around 2013.

Godox launches the V1Pro TTL Li-ion Round Flash

I got mine yesterday, and here are the "in-hand" specs:

Without battery and w/o SU-1: 472g
Without battery + SU-1: 492g
With battery and w/o SU-1: 592g
With battery + SU-1: 612g

The SU-1 is actually quite handy, basically acting as an electronic, adjustable bounce card. I emailed Godox to see what the watt-seconds are, as it's not listed in manual, but I'd say it's equivalent to a pop-up flash on consumer grade cameras. Has more power than I was expecting!
Using an AD200 with remote head (on top of the X2T) brings three times the power of the V1(pro) with at least half weight in hand, and with much better balance compared to a top heavy speedlight; after trying for the first time, I would never ever go back to have a full sized strobe on camera, especially for an entire wedding. 600g on top of a camera puts too much strain on the body at the end of the day.

OM Systems to announced the OM-1 II and two lenses on January 30, 2024

Looking at the specs, it seems that the Oly glass is higher spec in general - they may have worked with Sigma on the design but improved both optics and IS to account for the difference in price. Ive seen some superb images with the lens so I would be hesitant about the 'underwhelming sharpness' - and to give the Oly 100-400 'middling marks' I wonder who in a PC mag is doing the reviewing. As for saying pros are better off buying the 300mm F4 - this is a zoom for gods sake and sometimes people want/need a zoom.

First leaked images of the upcoming Fujifilm X100VI

I'm a bit apprehensive about the inclusion of IBIS in this camera. The X100V was already a bit notorious for getting warm in the hand. Now it's going to have an IBIS system and continue to use the pathetic WP126S battery. It does bring a bit of concern to me. I am also not the biggest fan of the 40mp X-Trans V sensor, as it's readout speed is extremely slow, low light performance is noticeably inferior to the 26mp X-Trans IV, and brings limitations to some video functionality that did not exist with the X-Trans IV.

I've seen many people excited for the 40mp just for cropping, which is true...but I would take a 26mp X-Trans IV sensor in this camera or the stacked 26mp X-Trans IV any day over the 40mp.

SmallRig launches the professional Fluid Head PH8 (4287)

It was very smart of them to release their professional video tripods first before they dropped these on us. Their FreeBlazer video tripods are SO GOOD and their new video heads are honestly fantastic. Until those products were proven, nobody would have trusted these professional fluid heads. If you've been on the fence for a great video tripod or head, these might be the best under $1,000 your going to find and they're WAYYY under $1,000.

Canon RF 10-20mm F4L IS STM Preview/Review Summary

Woohoo! I had preordered this day one on B&H a billion years ago and they just shipped it on February 1. I didn't expect to get this 10-20 lens as the only lens I really wanted was a 35 f1.2. I have the RF 85 1.2, 28-70 2, 100 2.8, 600 11, 800 11, 35 1.8, 24 1.8, and 16 2.8.

The timing couldn't be more perfect because I gave the 16 2.8 to a friend who just got the R50.

I've since started to branch away from B&H though I still love them dearly. They were also out of the Rode Wireless Pro so I was patiently waiting until I saw that Best Buy had them right now so I decided to drive 5 minutes and pick it up immediately. Shows how B&H can give you tunnel vision.

MTF Charts vs. Sharpness in the field

Here's a crop of a Nuthatch taken last week by wife with the R7 at iso 4000 (RF 100-400mm). It's straight out of DxO PL with. no added denoising by Topaz. I can just see the noise - it would be far more obvious using DPP4 etc (I recall you are interested in the denoising).

View attachment 214741
Wonderful photo! I'm quiet fond of images where we can see some change in depth of feild as with the tail end of the Nuthatch and rock in the corner.
It took me awhile to not feel like denoising looked too artificial.
I'm had mixed results with running my DxO PL images through Topaz. That is to say I thought some areas looked more natural and some looked worse.

After the other post, I was wondering about the Fuji xh2 sensor and the OM-1 sensor noise. I was looking at Claff's site and it'a interesting, but at least for me, some photos of charts would be better. I'm not sure if it's a group of people have already done this or if it's not reasonable to think about enough people agree about creating the same conditions for testing their cameras (same calibration and color charts, same lighting equipment and same room size and wall surface for keeping the ambient light the same plus I'm probably thinking of another variable).

Canon Patent Application: RF Super Telephotos

That makes sense...but I also wonder if the shift is the fact that lenses tend to no longer be sharpest at f/8....rather wide open is actually sharper than f/8. Just as I recently plotted this, but Optical Limits observed 5,119 LW/PH at f/2, 5,350 LW/PH at f/2.8, and 4,665 LW/PH at f/8 for the RF 28-70 f/2 (all on the R5).

f/8 values used to indicate the top performance of the lens....now, the best performance is usually within 1/3 to 1 stop of wide open. Thus, f/8 lines are unnecessary.
I think the old f8 scoring was intended for the older UWL. They all sufffered from field curvature / soft extream corners. The increase in DOF to F8 ( from F2.8 or F4) usually was enought to bring the curved focus plane into focus and more sharp. It wasn't until the ef 16-35 LIS and the EF 11-24L came a long and shows us what a better attempt at flat field could do for us in the far corners.

The R3 and R5 are being reduced in price

Funny. But it did get me thinking whether it's a signal that R3 and R5 replacements are on the way, or whether it's a response to competitor pricing.
I suspect the former. Or something simpler – sales have slowed down and they want to increase them (of course, that could be related to moving current stock ahead of replacements).
