What about a 1D IV? 1.3x crop, better IQ than a 7D, 10fps.

OK, not as good as the mighty 1Dx, but you'll save a lot of pennies and do you really need a super-pro level camera, or could you get away with a good-pro camera if you're not a full-on pro?

:D I don't really need any camera, since I only shoot for the fun of it. I guess, many others are in my predicament. 8) ... That being said, if I decide to get a piece of machinery as complex and sophisticated as a DSLR I only want the best I can get and that is the mighty Canon 1DX.
The 1D Mark IV is not up-to-date and, as you mentioned, not as good as the mighty 1DX, that's the problem with it.

As I said before, the 1dx is brilliant at capturing fast moving action and it's great in low light...if that's what you'll use it for then go for it, if not, then stick with the 5d3 and buy more glass with $6500... The newest 300 2.8 is the same price. ::)

That's a good idea. I like that. 8)

Of course you would, it's only the best glass made by canon ever. Decisions decisions.... ;)

??? ::)

6D: Should I wait or not?

there's no more ice cream in the fridge!

That's really not on, really.

But, on the 6D etc, it's been out since November 2012 ?? Expect a revamped 6D in about 2 + years.

Any revamp of the 5DMK III (5DMK IV ??) will not effect prices of the 6D, they fill different Price Entry Points & End User Markets.

I sympathise with your position, being in Australia, and being Gouged Down Under, that didn't sound quite right, try again.

I'm an Aussie also, but have lived overseas (Singapore & Jakarta) for 35 years, Singapore you will generally get US $$ Prices similar to prices available in the US, and as a Tourist leaving you get the 7% GST returned, not a bad deal, you just need to either be going through Singapore, or be friendly enough with someone that is.

Micro Adustment Issues

As I recall, you can use FoCal Pro on a manual lens to check some of the problem areas such as sharpness at different apertures. Its one way to find out if there is a issue with a lens, if the curve is irregular, there is a problem.

You can take photos of the target manually focusing at each aperture and upload them into Focal for analysis. I'd have to reread the manual on this, its just from memory.
That sounds right - I think you manually focus with LiveView and then it runs the aperture sharpness test. I suppose "Turbo" mode might work for the purpose takesome1 suggested. Really. I have no plans to use this lens for anything other than very slow, deliberate shooting with LiveView, but I guess it's possible to calibrate the confirmation light. I don't think I'll waste the time trying.
It might be one way to detect suspected decentering issues.

Macro lens for the missus for christmas

I've had a number of the 100mm USM Macro lenses, and was disappointed in the images I took with all of them. They were fine lenses, but just too difficult to use handheld and slow AF did not help.

When the 100L came out, I was very skeptical and waited for over a year to see what early adapters thought. There were so many positive reviews to its operating ease and effectiveness of the IS that I finally went for a new one. It was even better than I expected. The lens is not exceptionally sharp, its very good. Instead, its strong point is the faster autofocus and the IS. I can walk around, and get close focus shots that are sharp. I almost never use a tripod with it, I may brace my arms for a extreme close shot, and for that type of use, it pays.

I was very pessimistic about the IS, and would have never expected to get handheld images like these. Obviously, I'm now totally sold on the lens.

Baby Robins just holding the camera over my head and taking a blind shot into the nest. Getting this with a tripod would be totally impractical. I did, however, use a camera mounted flash.

Or this bug that was on my front screen door one morning, just grabbed the camera and snapped him. I used my flash, and braced my elbows on the door.

Canon to Offer Dual Pixel CMOS AF Upgrade for the EOS C100 Digital Video Camera

As a one band man who uses multiple C100s for documentary work, especially for interviews, 70D style autofocus will make my work much easer.

Been doing manual focus pulling for a relatively short 15 years now with different high end video camera and I don't mind this fancy new AF technology being an additional tool to my kit but I'll definitely would not want to abuse it. Tried the 70D autofocus and found its focus either still not as precise or if it does hits its focus - a bit too artificial in feel, very unlike a good human focus puller. However I can imagine in the future technology will make it possible for AF cinema cameras to make focus pulling better and more human like in its behaviour.

This development kinds of reminds me of 80s when still film cameras were starting to get reliable autofocus. It really polarised people.

Need Help w/Lightings...

Hi All,

I was looking at the at the Sony HVL 20DW2 light previously but didn't get it due to budget and need at the time. Now I need it, but it doesn't seem to be selling anymore.

I will use this as a off camera light for stills. Portraitures, weddings, etc.

I was also thinking of getting another LED light that's bigger. Like this:
Litepanels Litepanels Micro - On-camera light - LED - 3 W - DC.

My budget is $400 for both. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

Canon USA website & product reviews - Canon S-120

For the sake of info..... I just sent my S100 back to Newport News again today. It is one of the ones that went back for the lens barrel recall many months ago. The barrel is once again stuck in the deployed position. It tries to close at power-on but redeploys and stays there. I love the camera and have made a lot of keepers with it. As noted above, IQ-wise (especially DR) it has been overcome by Sony and perhaps others but the S series are still very good walk-around/family time cameras and mine does outstanding macro work as well for what it is.

The market determines which is best, so.............

Hardly, given sufficient suppliy the market is the result of demand (= what the people buy), not what is best quality item for a price because there are a lot of other factors at play, even in a transparent market - which it usually isn't thanks to marketing :-o

For dslrs that would be existing equipment (learning loss and loss of selling and re-buying lenses), brand attachment and 3rd party enhancements, namely Magic Lantern. Add all these and Canon can very well sell an inferior product at a higher price while Nikon simply selling cheaper might not do them any good. There is also the "snob effect" which means a higher product produces more demand because it has to be better, right :-p

Disclaimer: ilovemy6dandthisthreadwasaboutfindingoptimalsettingsandiwontswitchtonikonever.

I know this is getting a little off topic, but to continue:

From my own personal point of view I came across more D600 adverts than I did 6D, but I think it is really quite simple. To the average Joe who wants to upgrade to FF and doesn't have commitment to a system the 6D is simply more aesthetically pleasing than the D600/610. It's as simple as that. Also Nikon seem to fail to understand that fore mentioned Joe sees a camera without pop up flash as much more 'professional' than one with it.

Canon actually sells a lot more APS-C cameras than Nikon and hence has more visibility (in human hands) for the average Joe. I really doubt how many buy a 6D as their first DSLR - It is more often than not an upgrade for the APS-C users. Advertising can help only so much in luring a Canon APS-C user to jump to Nikon and start afresh with the entire system.

I think the problem with a high iso capable camera is that people use the high iso in lieu of lighting correcting.... exposing correctly. I'm occasionally guilty of this myself

Jd....I think I understand what you're saying....

I have shot at poor light sporting events where the action is stopped, and I continue to shoot manual at 1/1000 and ISO 3200, even though the subjects are moving slow or not moving much....they are exposed correctly, but the image quality would be better if I quickly switched to 1/500 and ISO 1600....or maybe 1/250 and ISO 800

I probably should use my custom settings more to do this.

Hey Northstar, thanks for all of your help! The tips you gave on editing and cropping are very helpful!

Right now, I can't get the high end 70-200 simply because I don't have the money. I'll use the 70-300 for friday's match and hopefully I can get some good pictures.

How did the 70-300 work out for you?

24-70 II with IS

I believe Canon issued the non-I.S. first because it wouldn't sell...later
when the one with I.S. was available

I'm really hoping this is the case. I've been thinking about trading in my fairly new 24-105 5D3 kit lens towards a 24-70 II, but considering the hit I'll take on the trade-in, I feel compelled to keep using it in the hopes that a 24-70 II with IS is in the nearish future. The "ish" after "near" is a concern though.
I wouldn't worry. It will take less that 10 years... probably ;D

Focus speed of 50mm lenses and other primes, especially in low light

StudentOfLight said:
My 50mm f1.4 is the same, and I feel a very disappointing lens purchase. It is my least favourite lens (that I still own).

Anyway, I know that you said you don't want to use flash to light your scene but couldn't you just use the AF-assist beam. Flash power set to minimum, point the head off to the side (or behind you) so it won't have significant impact on the exposure?
In the flash exposure menu, you can set flash firing to off. The focus assist will still work

Huge Issue with 1DX AF micro adjustments

It would be strange to find that your 1Dx varies from front to back focus from shot to shot. If it was me I would be looking at how I was taking the shots. ;D If you are really convinced that its the camera not you then it will probably need to go back.

There is fine adjustment avalible and lots of ways to do it. But you camera should be consistent.

At least you should get plenty of web traffic by including links to your FB and web site. ::)

Buying "dodgy" American Canon camera gear?

CR Backup Admin said:
Warning ... Giving advice on how to break the law, be it to import something without paying taxes due, or to get expensive software without paying for it is not allowed on the site, posts will be removed.

In some cases, the poster will be banned if the violation is obviously intentional.

The above post appears to have been prompted by a post I made regarding the payment of duty and VAT on imported goods. I wish to clarify that it was not my intention to encourage tax avoidance - in each scenario I proposed, the goods were detected by customs officers and duty/VAT would rightfully be charged.

There are many posts on this site which encourage the use of certain Hong Kong based dealers (i.e. hey folks, use dealer "X" as you won't have to pay import duty!!). A number of these dealers deliberately under-declare the value of the goods for customs purposes therefore anyone who orders from them is going to be party to breaking the law yet the moderators don't appear to discourage recommendation of these dealers. You don't have to look too far to find out which dealers I'm talking about. Indeed, there is a post today re ProCameraShop and whether customs duty can be demanded retrospectively. Depending on the contract small-print YES, OF COURSE IT CAN!!! Some dealers state that they act as a source for the goods but it is you who makes a personal importation therefore you are liable for all duties and taxes.

Please don't think I am having a go at the moderators for being overly cautious about what is posted or that I feel bitter about my post being removed - we all know they have a fairly thankless task keeping track of who's saying what about whom etc. but unless they take a firm stance on all posts recommending the use of such dealers then CR may be thought to condone them.

Kind regards and thank you to the moderators for running the site - your work is appreciated.

7D vs 5Diii for video?

Axilrod said:

I thought lots of folks were getting Philip Bloom for his semi-downer 'enthusiasm' when it came out.

Anyway lots of folks use ML RAW because it is THAT awesome. SOOOOO much more detail than you get from 5D3 internal or Ninja recording and SOOOOOOO much more processing latitude. SOOOOOO much richer colors! I

It is amazing, but it also requires SOOOOO much more hard drive space, SOOOO much more computing power, and processing is SOOOOO much more involved ;).

That being said....harddrive space these days is ridiculously cheap, that really should not be the factor stopping anyone from shooting RAW or having plenty of backup space.

Computing power, yep..that's still a bit $$, but coming down, and not out of the grasp of anyone even semi-serious working with good video. If you're not using a mac, you can build yourself a pretty high end computer with plenty of GPU to help cover rendering times,etc....so, at some point, computing power shouldn't be a large hurdle to cross for most people wanting to dabble in higher end video.

And sure..there are a lot of steps and hoops to jump through, but even that is getting better with Davinci Resolve handling the files directly out of raw2dmg tool.....

But hey....most of the better things of life are a bit messy....

:D
